What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas! Well that's what they say at least, but for this week's episode we are completing our birthday shenanigans with sharing an episode we recorded about Las Vegas! Have you ever heard of Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel? Well Lory has, and in this week's episode the two of us are going to explore the life of Bugsy and also what people believed he did after he died. Enjoy this episode and Happy Thanksgiving!
Benjamin Bugsy Siegel had a formidable intuition. He thought of transforming Las Vegas, a desolate city in the middle of the desert, into a gambling mecca. For Siegel that idea became an obsession. He thought of building a casino with an adjoining hotel.
This week we dive into the life and untimely death of the man who made Vegas what it is today, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel. He was living the high life out in LA rubbing elbows with Hollywood's finest and making his gambling dreams come true out in Vegas until he made one (or a million) fatal mistake.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
In 1991, Warren Beatty jumped onto the big screen to portray one the most feared and most famous mobsters of all time...Bugsy. The film, directed by Barry Levinson and co-starring Annette Bening (as Bugsy's longtime girlfriend, Virginia Hill) tells the story of Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel and his role in the creation of The Flamingo and the building of Las Vegas as an "oasis in the desert". Bugsy was minor hit, grossing just over $49 Million at the box office, receiving high praise from critics, and garnering several Academy Award & Golden Globe nominations including a Golden Globe win for "Best Picture - Drama". But despite all these accolades, just how historically accurate was the film? My guest for this episode of the podcast is here to tell us. Making his FOURTH appearance on the podcast is Geoff Schumacher, the Vice President of Exhibits and Programs at the Mob Museum in Las Vegas. Geoff was kind enough to join me once again to help separate fact from fiction when it comes to the story of Bugsy Siegel. Did Bugsy actually try to get into acting during his time in Hollywood? Who actually came up with the idea for The Flamingo? And was opening night at the casino really a total flop? If you want to learn more about Bugsy & his associates and their place in Las Vegas history, plan a visit to the Mob Museum on your next Vegas vacation. You can also follow the Mob Museum on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. “The mob had been, of course, heavily integrated in the casino industry here from day one.”To understand the city of Las Vegas as it existed in the 1970s, we have to back up to Dec. 26, 1946: opening night at the Flamingo Hotel on what we know today as the Las Vegas Strip. The project, started by Hollywood Reporter founder Billy Wilkerson before being taken over by notorious mob figure Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, would set a new standard for hotel-casinos in Las Vegas. On May 18, 2019 Hollyweird Paranormal was apart of a Lockdown at the infamous Braken Fern Manor hosted by OC Ghosts & Legends. Tune in and listen to our interviewS with the rest of the OC Ghost and Legends members along with our sit down with Dixie Tantardini, OC Ghosts & Legends' Psychic and Medium. We talk about mobster ghosts, ghost hunting tools one should always carry during an investigation, how to protect yourself during a paranormal investigation and the creepy EVPs we collected during our investigation with OC Ghosts & Legends. OC GHOSTS & LEGEND ( CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO) Braken fern manor built in 1926 was originally known as “The Crib” while the Tudor House formerly known as “Club Arrowhead of the Pines” became a social hideaway for Hollywood's elite. The Manor- This 10 room, 10 bathroom was said to have been used as a brothel during prohibition while The Tudor House was used to house illegal gambling, liquor, and other illegal pastimes. Infamous mobster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was said to have funded the construction and built the locations as a sanctuary of escape for Hollywood’s big wigs and Mob members. Bracken Fern Manor is across the street from Tudor House in Lake Arrowhead. Nestled in San Bernardino National Forest, surrounded by pine, cedar, and dogwood, at an altitude of 5100’, is Lake Arrowhead, CA, an area described as the "Alps of Southern California" in 1826. At that time, about 40 Paiute Indians, a warlike tribe, used the mountains for their hunting grounds. They lived in the high desert area. Many were killed in a fight with the white men of Little Bear Valley. At the same time, a more peaceful tribe of Indians, the Serranos, lived very near Little Bear Valley, in an area now known as Rock Camp, on the north side of the mountain. They would take their old and sick to Arrowhead Hot Springs for rejuvenation and healing. They hunted in the beautiful and bountiful valley and lived relatively peaceful, somewhat nomadic lives descending to the desert highlands and warmer inland valleys during the winter months. Beneath the historic Arrowhead, sits the equally unique Arrowhead Springs. The Arrowhead Springs is a place deeply rooted in legend, with the most ancient one possibly being passed down from the Native Americans. The legend goes like this: The Great Spirit had an arrow, which was to guide the Native Americans to the spot where they were to make their home. The Great Spirit, having selected the place, fixed the arrow to mark it forever. It is believed that the native inhabitants of the San Bernardino Mountains through the Arrowhead directed the way to the hot springs with healing properties and therefore considered it holy ground. Fast forward to the 1920s and prohibition. We touched on this subject in Ep. 30 on Famous Haunted Hollywood Bars. Police were cracking down on the mob in the city so the mob moved their operations in less discrete areas. One famous mobster who was rumored to lead this move was the notorious mobster, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegal. Rumor has it that Bugsy talked the Chicago Mob into backing his new venture, which is now known as Bracken Fern Manor. This Alpine-style inn opened as Club Arrowhead in The Pines on July 4th, 1926. The inn had state of the art amenities, such as electricity! More importantly, it catered to the rich and famous, offering gambling, illegal liquor and "working girls." Other amenities included an Olympic size swimming pool, skiing, tennis courts, a bathhouse, and more. The brothel continued operations through World War II. Gambling was maintained in the speakeasy (across the street) up until 1955. Today, Bracken Fern Manor is a Certified Historic Landmark in the State of California. Across from Bracken Fern Manor is where gambling took place at The CLUB. Now called "The Tutor House." The story has it that when cops were on their way up the mountain from San Bernardino, and administrators were alerted,
Jewish gangster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel is frequently credited with corrupting Hollywood’s unions and “inventing” Las Vegas. Siegel did have movie star friends, but the true story of his involvement with the Flamingo casino is also the story of a much bigger movieland player: Hollywood Reporter founder/publisher/columnist Billy Wilkerson. Notorious American gangster, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel’s murder was front page news. Everyone assumed it was a mob hit, but was it? Join Carter and Wenndy as they investigate possible suspects, including a new theory that has emerged.
Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel was a well-known American mobster. Friend to both Frank Sinatra and Al Capone, Bugsy was known as one of the most "infamous and feared gangsters of his day". He became one of America’s celebrity gangsters and is considered the father of the Las Vegas Strip. When he was murdered, everyone assumed it was the mob, but was it? Join Carter and Wenndy as they investigate his unsolved murder and take an in-depth look at Siegel’s organized crime career.
Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to a family of poor Jewish immigrants, who came from Eastern Europe. His parents, Max and Jennie, worked whatever jobs they could find to provide for their five children, and their neighborhood constantly invented new definitions for the word “Poor.” As a child, the second of five, Benjamin saw that struggle as well as what his parents struggled against, and he vowed that he would rise above a life of poverty. He dropped out of school somewhere around the age of eleven and started his life of crime. Even as a child he was familiar with violence and intimidation, learning most of what he knew from the Irish and Italian street gangs around him.
Nothing like it before. Nothing like it since. Murder Inc. was the most unusual, brutal and extensive collection of characters the American underworld had ever produced. Culled primarily from Brooklyn's Brownsville and Ocean Hill sections, these official on-call killers of New York's larger crime Syndicate were a unified force of Jewish and Italian gangsters that treated murder as an art form for an entire decade. They were called mobsters, thugs, hoods and racketeers, but at the very core... they were assassins. When gangland kingpins, such as Louis "Lepke" Buchalter, Charles "Lucky" Luciano and Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, needed a contract fulfilled - the "Combination" boys would eagerly take to task the enforcement duties, which included methods ranging from gunfire to fire axes, incineration to icepicks. These are the mysteries, the sordid stories, the character profiles, alluring and lesser known tales of the Mob's Most Deadly Hit Squad. Meet the killers, the victims, the bosses, the lovers, the deceivers and the gangbusters that made up a nationally-reaching ensemble cast rivaling anything organized crime or law enforcement had ever imagined to that point in time. Discover the nuances, the attitudes, the motivations, the ambitions and, thanks to little honor among thieves, the scathing revelations that lead to an inevitable downfall.
