While there is not much on the physical media side this week there are definitely some choice titles to upgrade into your collection. It is also October and that means horror. Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress to talk about a must-own double feature from Criterion from the genre's yesteryear as well as Tim Burton's solid tribute to Hammer horror. Not to mention Lara Flynn Boyle getting blown off a roof. Alas though there is also some solid new theatrical horror titles on disc now as well as Peter Berg's finest directorial effort getting an upgrade. 0:00 - Intro 1:49 – Criterion (I Walked with a Zombie, The Seventh Victim 4K) 16:03 – Kino (Riot in a Women's Prison) 21:04 – Universal (Friday Night Lights 4K) 27:00 - Shout Factory (Devil 4K) 35:42 – Paramount (Sleepy Hollow 4K) 45:16 – New TV & Theatrical Titles On Blu-ray 57:02 – New Blu-ray Announcements
Niclas Larsson was a child actor who got interested in directing short films around age twelve. “I watched cheap American movies from the 90s,” says the Swedish writer-director, “And I loved them. I didn't get into serious cinema until maybe 15-16, but I didn't like them until I was probably 20.” Comedies like Freaky Friday and 13 Going on 30 shaped his thinking on cinema. “I deal with magical realism and surrealism and heightened reality.” In some ways, Larsson hopes to model Quentin Tarantino, who also appreciates “cheap movies” and turns them into more complex narratives. In his latest film, Mother Couch, three adult children (Ewan McGregor, Rhys Ifans, and Lara Flynn Boyle) are brought together when their mother (Ellen Burstyn) refuses to move from a couch in a nearly abandoned furniture store. “I spent a lot of time with my grandparents. They didn't care about [R-ratings] and loved horror, so I remember watching The Shining around age 10 and realizing it was something else. I felt immersed in an experience of cinema. It wasn't feel-good. I felt worse, but I was immersed in it.” Films like Requiem for a Dream, There Will Be Blood, The Dark Knight, and No Country for Old Men made him think, “How can I do that? How can I do what we call cinema?” “I've been going around with Mother Couch for about a year. I have a lot of walk-outs. It's a provocative movie and it's not for everybody. I didn't intend for it to be for everybody, but with each screening, a bunch of kids stayed and it did something for them.” Mother, Couch will be available for streaming on September 13th. Pssst! Walsh. Also worauf wartet ihr noch? Steigt ein!

Chris has gone back to a little-known indie movie from 1993, with Red Rock West and starring Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper, Lara Flynn Boyle and J.T. Walsh. Red Rock West (1993), directed by John Dahl, was produced as an independent neo-noir thriller that defied genre conventions and captivated audiences with its suspenseful narrative and gritty atmosphere. The film's production was marked by its modest budget and resourceful filmmaking techniques, with Dahl and his team making the most of limited resources to create a taut and engaging thriller. Despite facing challenges associated with independent filmmaking, including tight schedules and financial constraints, the production team remained committed to bringing the film's compelling story to life. Red Rock West benefited from the talents of its cast whose nuanced performances added depth and authenticity to the film's characters. Filming took place on location in various small towns in Montana, contributing to the film's authentic Western aesthetic and enhancing its sense of realism. The film's success as a gripping and tightly plotted thriller, combined with its critical acclaim and cult following, solidified its place as a standout entry in the neo-noir genre and a testament to the power of independent filmmaking. “Once again, it's Clint Eastwood as a cop, so he is costing everyone millions of dollars.” - Chris On this week's We Hate Movies, our dumbest theme month yet, SHEENPRIL continues with a wild conversation on the totally outrageous Clint Eastwood movie, The Rookie! How hilariously inept is Raul Julia's car thief mastermind? How incredible is the opening car carrier chase sequence? How great is this cast full of real-deal character actors? Did Sheen's character really need to drive that motorcycle through the door? Couldn't we get a little more Tom Skerritt and a lot more Lara Flynn Boyle? And what are the odds this movie was a re-worked “one last case” Dirty Harry film? The Rookie stars Clint Eastwood, Charlie Sheen, Raul Julia, Sonia Braga, Lara Flynn Boyle, Pepe Serna, Marco Rodríguez, Xander Berkeley, Tony Plana, Paul Ben-Victor, and Tom Skerritt as Eugene Ackerman; directed by Clint Eastwood. Writer and podcaster Jake Tropila returns for a dive into the dusty, hard-nosed pleasures of John Dahl's 1993 neo-noir western 'Red Rock West'. The film has been newly restored and released on blu-ray in a great edition courtesy of Cinématographe, a new sub-label from the folks behind Vinegar Syndrome. We start with a discussion of the career of John Dahl, an underrated director with a sharp style that made him a prime helmer of small, smart thrillers of the era alongside his skilled conteporaries like Bill Duke and Carl Franklin. Then we turn to Red Rock West, its influences, and where it exists downstream from the success of the Coen Brothers' 'Blood Simple', a film that bolstered a neo-noir resurgence in the late 80s and early 90s. Finally, we discuss the relative absence of the neo-noir in the modern cinematic landscape, the migration of these sorts of stories into longform, episodic television, and some hopes for the genre's future, courtesy of some recent releases like the latest Rose Glass film 'Love Lies Bleeding', a film that had yet to be released when this episode was recorded. "Wayne's World," a film that transcended its "Saturday Night Live" sketch origins to become a cult classic, encapsulates the early '90s like few other movies do. Directed by Penelope Spheeris and starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey as Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, respectively, the film is a brilliant blend of humour, music, and a touch of innocence, all wrapped up in a storyline that's both engaging and hilariously absurd. At its core, "Wayne's World" is a story about friendship, dreams, and the pursuit of happiness in the face of corporate influence. Wayne and Garth are two slackers from Aurora, Illinois, who run a public-access television show from Wayne's basement. Their show, also titled "Wayne's World," is a local hit, catching the eye of television producer Benjamin Kane, played with smarmy charm by Rob Lowe. Kane offers to buy the rights to the show, promising fame and fortune. However, as Wayne and Garth soon discover, the road to success is fraught with sellouts, betrayals, and the potential loss of what they value most: their authenticity and creative control. The film is a riot from start to finish, thanks to Myers and Carvey's impeccable chemistry and their characters' endearing goofiness. Wayne's catchphrases, like "Party on!" and "Excellent!", became part of the cultural lexicon, while Garth's shy, awkward demeanour is the perfect foil to Wayne's exuberant personality. Their adventures, or misadventures, are filled with memorable moments, including their encounter with Alice Cooper, the "Bohemian Rhapsody" car scene that revitalised Queen's song, and Wayne's dream sequences that are both bizarre and hilariously offbeat. One of the film's strengths is its self-awareness. "Wayne's World" frequently breaks the fourth wall, with Wayne and Garth directly addressing the audience, making us complicit in their antics. This technique adds a layer of intimacy and immediacy to the film, drawing the viewer deeper into its world. It's a clever device that Spheeris and the writers use to great effect, allowing the film to comment on its own absurdity and the nature of television and film production. The supporting cast adds depth and colour to the film. Tia Carrere's performance as Cassandra, a talented musician and Wayne's love interest, brings a welcome dimension to the story, challenging Wayne to grow and consider his priorities. Her subplot, involving a record deal that's more about image than talent, mirrors Wayne and Garth's struggles with the television industry. Meanwhile, characters like Ed O'Neill's morose donut shop manager and Lara Flynn Boyle's obsessed ex-girlfriend provide additional comedic highlights. However, "Wayne's World" is not just a string of jokes and catchphrases. It's a commentary on the early '90s media landscape, the commodification of grassroots culture, and the eternal struggle between artistic integrity and commercial success. The film's climax, with its multiple endings, underscores the power of choice and the importance of staying true to one's values, even in the face of overwhelming pressure to conform.Technically, the film is a product of its time, with a soundtrack that's a mix of rock anthems and power ballads that perfectly encapsulate the era. The cinematography and editing are straightforward, serving the story without drawing attention away from the characters and their world. It's a testament to Spheeris's direction that the film feels both timeless and distinctly of its time, a snapshot of a cultural moment that continues to resonate with audiences today. In conclusion, "Wayne's World" is more than just a comedy; it's a cultural artifact that captures the zeitgeist of the early '90s with wit, warmth, and a genuine love for its characters and their world. Its appeal lies not just in its humour, but in its heart, its commentary on the media industry, and its celebration of creativity and friendship. As Wayne and Garth would say, "Wayne's World" is not just excellent, it's a party time that continues to charm and entertain audiences, making it a deserving classic in the comedy genre. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

This week you might need to grab a box of tissues and that's not just because of our unrelenting dad sexiness but also because we're going to be getting all emotional in emotions week as we start things off by counting down the top 5 Tearjerkers, the movies that squeezed tears out of the empty space where our souls used to be.Todd Solondz's 1998 black comedy HAPPINESS is a movie so relentlessly dark I had to watch it with night vision goggles on. Sort of focusing on the unhealthy relationship between the Jordan sisters; Helen, a bored celebrity ice queen author with fantasies of sexual violence, Trish, an unfulfilled housewife trapped in a sham marriage and Joy, a sensitive but dim-witted free-spirit searching for love, this is also the kind of movie where mouth-breathing incels lounge around in their underwear making abusive phone calls whilst jacking off, a lonely frump seeking connection murders and dismembers her neighbourhood rapist and the final scene features an 11 year old boy triumphantly announcing they've achieved their first ever orgasm. Not to mention the film's most infamous scenes featuring Dylan Baker's Bill, a predatory psychiatrist which I have in fact now mentioned. HAPPINESS is not a bad movie but it is a deeply unpleasant one, with its depressive mood and view of mankind as putrid, self-involved slaves to their nastiest impulses becoming absolutely over-bearing by the end. Maybe that's the point, this isn't the most profound movie of all time.In our final section of the show we'll be exploring anger via the medium of animated birds and fascist pigs trapped in an endless cycle of violence with Netflix's ANGRY BIRDS SLINGSHOT SERIES. New York-based film writer Jason Miller joins to discuss the strange, beautiful cinematic worlds of the unsung Alan Rudolph and his 1992 film 'Equinox' starring Matthew Modine as identical twin brothers separated at birth. We begin with a discussion of Rudolph's career, beginning as an assistant director to the great Robert Altman before branching out and producing some of the most compellingly idiosyncratic films of the 1980s (as well as his feature 'Remember My Name' from 1978, arguably his greatest work). Then we turn our sights to 'Equinox' and talk about the film's distinctive rhythms and characters as well as the ways Rudolph imbues his fantasy world with a potent naturalism and sense of place. Finally, we discuss the injustice of Rudolph's relative obscurity within cinephile circles, and why the filmmaker's entire body of work is due for a necessary and urgent reappraisal. We're committed to getting 'Equinox' in front of as many eyes as possible! Email us at hitfactorypod@gmail.com for more info. Follow Jason on Twitter and check out links to his work here. Let's fix that!Nancy and Sarah have fallen hard for documentary filmmaker Meg Smaker after her recent appearance on Sam Harris' podcast. Smaker's film, originally titled Jihad Rehab (now called The UnRedacted), was canceled before it was ever released, having met a perfect storm of identity politics, institutional cowardice, and social media pile-on. But what we see in Smaker is a champion of radical empathy. She's also a bad-ass, a former firefighter who cusses like a Marine and describes herself as a “six-foot albino godzilla.” Our kinda woman. Our friend Meghan Daum, of The Unspeakable and A Special Place in Hell podcasts, brought our attention to the dust-up at Hobart literary journal, where Cuban-born writer Alex Perez gave an interview filled with the spot-on observations everyone knows but no one talks about (Sarah calls them “truth clicks”) and which — surprise! — led to five editors quitting. A new site called Semafor drops some truth bombs about tensions at The New York Times, including an exchange with a former editor that gave Nancy a mental orgasm. We are focusing on the respected director John Dahl on this episode of the podcast. A front-runner in the Neo-Noir movement, he has produced a number of films that drip with style and he loves a twisty plot full of backstabs and deceit. We start off by talking about The Last Seduction from 1994. Starring actor-turned-director Peter Berg and Linda Fiorentino, it's a pitch-black tale of a woman on the run who will use anything she can to control the people around her and to come out on top. We follow that up with the star-packed Red Rock West from 1993. The cast includes Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper, Lara Flynn Boyle and J.T. Walsh, all turning in fantastic performances. Set in a dusty western town, it follows a young man who's down on his luck, looking for a fresh start but what he finds instead is a case of mistaken identity that embroils him in a murder plot. This one is really excellent and should be seen without knowing too much about how the story develops. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. We discuss the writer/director's singular talent for handling "sticky" subject matter and characters, the film's remarkably prescient and timely themes of emmiseration and depravity in modern American existence, and why current media discourse and trends are especially averse to embracing the brilliance of Solondz's deeply nuanced portrayals. A story about sweat, garbage, terrible jokes, and a third arm. Listen in as me and my guest, Kenny, talk through this star-studded, greasy little oddball flick. Written and directed by Adam Rifkin (The Chase, Detroit Rock City, The Last Movie Star), this film has been lauded as a "pitch-black fable of show business at this sleaziest" by the Los Angeles Times, while also considered "a new low in cinematic ineptitude" by Rolling Stone. What is the truth? You'll have to watch and decide for yourself, but until then we take look at some of the more memorable and affecting elements of this film which has, in my mind, hands down THE best production design I've ever seen. You can just feel the oily condensation of the film's world. It tells the story of garbage man-by-day and amateur comedian-by-night Marty Malt, played by Judd Nelson, and his smarmy, fame-seeking buddy Gus, played by Bill Paxton with his typically awesome bravado. The two casually move trash around during the day, but when the sun sets Marty takes the stage and tells some truly awful jokes, with piss poor timing to boot. All while Gus yucks it up and howls his support. One day, hot shot agent Jackie Chrome (Wayne Mr. Goddamn Vegas himself Newton) offers to check out Marty's show which sets the two friends aflutter with excitement that their train has finally come in. Unfortunately things don't go quite as planned... But all is not lost, for shortly thereafter Marty wakes up to find a third arm growing inexplicably from his back. To Jackie Chrome THAT is a talent! Did we mention that this film also features Lara Flynn Boyle, James Can, and Rob Lowe? This movie is so delightfully weird that it cannot be missed. The film is currently available on DVD.
CAGE UNCAGED: FILM FLAM FATALE**BONUS EPISODE**Another bonus episode covering a corner of Cage's career that has been under-represented thus far in Cage Uncaged! This week we tackle the fertile cinematic era between Moonstruck (1987) and Leaving Las Vegas (1995), when Cage would appear as often in quirky indies as studio fare before he became a superstar Oscar Winner. This week we look into a few so-called neo noirs, a popular trend at the time before Tarrantino came along and made every crime story ironic and referential. The trend may have begun nine years earlier with the film debut of the Coen Bros., BLOOD SIMPLE (which we will cover as a double bill with Raising Arizona next episode!). RED ROCK WEST (1993) is directed by John Dahl from a script by Dahl and his brother (or a guy with the same last name). Cage plays an everyman drifter with a bum knee who is mistaken for a hired killer in a speed bump of a town in rural Wyoming. Twists and turns ensue with Dennis Hopper showing up with a knife and fork ready to cut up and chew scenery. Lara Flynn Boyle, JT Walsh and Dwight Yoakam round out a small, but crack, cast that ooze a definitive sense of early 90s style. Two years later in Barbet Schroeder's remake of KISS OF DEATH (1995), Cage plays the villain to David Caruso's career as Caruso haplessly attempted to be a legitimate A-list leading man. With a screenplay by pod fave Richard Price and a supporting cast that includes Helen Hunt, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Rappaport, Stanley Tucci, Kevin Corrigan, Hope Davis, Phillip Baker-Hall, and all-time fave Cage costar Ving Rhames, this movie had the look of a brilliantly cast, high end studio classic. But... it has since disappeared so deep into the memory hole that certain members of the pod *may* have had to resort to pirating it to even be able to watch it in 2021. Pirating hurts artists, don't forget. Was it the movie itself or did 1995 audiences get it wrong? How can we blame Tarrantino? Find out! We actually disagree a LOT on this movie.REMAINING CAGE FILMS: PIG, RAISING ARIZONA, WILLY'S WONDERLAND, MANDY. DEEP BACKGROUND FILMS: BLOOD SIMPLE, UNDER THE BLACK RAINBOW. THEME SONG: HOWLING FANTODS.
"Forget about stunts, owning my story was the bravest thing I ever did." Hannah Kozak is a photographer and a Hollywood stuntwoman. When Hannah was 9 her mother left the family for a man who turned out to be abusive towards her mother. Hannah witnessed this abuse and it eventually lead to Hannah's mother being hospitalized with permanent brain damage. Hannah's book, He Threw the Last Punch Too Hard, is a story about Hannah and her mother and her journey of forgiveness and dealing with domestic abuse. Hannah and I have an amazing conversation about her life, this book, and her belief in the power of photography to heal. http://hannahkozak.com https://www.instagram.com/hannahkozak/ https://twitter.com/hannahkozak This episode is sponsored by the Charcoal Book Club, a monthly subscription service for photobook enthusiasts. Working with the most respected names in contemporary photography, Charcoal selects and delivers essential photobooks to a worldwide community of collectors. Each month, members receive a signed, first-edition monograph and an exclusive print to add to their collections. www.charcoalbookclub.com Hannah Kozak was born to a Polish father and a Guatemalan mother in Los Angeles, California. At the age of ten, she was given a Kodak Brownie camera by her father, Sol, a survivor of eight Nazi forced labor camps and began instinctively capturing images of dogs, flowers, family and friends that felt honest and real. As a teenager growing up in Los Angeles, Hannah would sneak onto movie lots and snap photos on the sets of Charlie's Angels, Starsky and Hutch and Family, selling star images to movie magazines and discovering a world that was far from reality. While working in a camera store at the age of twenty, Hannah's life changed when she met a successful stuntwoman who became her mentor and helped her start a career in stunts. For over twenty-five years, Hannah's work provided the opportunity to work with notable directors such as Michael Cimino, David Lynch, Mike Nichols, Tim Burton and Michael Bay. She worked as a stunt double for celebrated stars like Cher, Angelina Jolie, Lara Flynn Boyle and Isabella Rossellini. On every set, Hannah took her camera to work, capturing candid, behind-the-scene pictures that penetrated the illusion of Hollywood magic. Her wanderlust and career in the film business afforded Hannah the opportunity to travel from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Mexico, Guatemala and Peru to Egypt, Italy, Israel and India, capturing images of far away lands and exploring the innocence and truth found in the faces of children from around the world. Hannah has turned the camera on herself, her life and her world. She continues to look for those things that feel honest and real, using her camera as a means of exploring feelings and emotions. After decades of standing in for someone else, she now is in control of her destiny and vision. Hannah is an autobiographical photographer. Her subjects are the people and places that touch her emotionally. She has been photographing people and places for four decades. Photography has the power to heal and to help us through difficult periods, something Hannah Kozak knows first hand from personal experience.
