Another year, another festival recap! In today's episode of Behind the Pursuit we reflect on our experiences at the recent Kentucky Bourbon Festival and Bourbon and Beyond Festival. We discuss the evolution of Pursuit Spirits over the last three years and how our presence at these festivals has changed over those years. The conversation highlights the importance of brand storytelling, the growing popularity of Double Oaked, and the intersection of bourbon culture with music festivals. We share insights on consumer behavior, sales performance, and the overall atmosphere at the events, emphasizing the excitement and community surrounding bourbon and whiskey tasting. Did you do anything differently? How does it feel that people aren't asking your story anymore? How do you keep your story integrated but pivot to what's more of the focus with consumers? Was anything surprising about what people enjoyed during the tastings at the booth? Did KBF feel bigger without sharing the stage with Bourbon & Beyond? What role do you feel bourbon plays in a growing annual music festival? What do the results of these last two weeks have you thinking about for next year? and much more. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Our Recommended Charity Ideas for February 2025, published by CE on August 7, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Applications are now open for AIM's Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program in 2025, with the next round taking place in February 2025. This program provides two months of intensive training in starting a non-profit, as well as co-founder matching, seed funding access, and recommended charity ideas. This article provides an overview of our latest recommended charity ideas, which will be available to participants in the February 2025 cohort. We will publish full research reports for each recommended idea in the coming weeks. Recommended Charity Ideas: One Paragraph Summary Cage-Free Farming in the Middle East We want to see a new organization implement the most successful and well-tested intervention of the animal movement - cage-free corporate campaigns - in a new, neglected region such as the Middle East, which farms over 300 million hens every year. Cage-free campaigns are the backbone of the existing animal advocacy movement, with great progress being made on the global level, as we have seen 2,625 cage-free commitments made so far. 1,157 of these corporate pledges are now fully implemented across Europe, the UK, and the US, impacting 220 million hens. However, despite this global progress, there are still many countries without existing organizations or ongoing campaigns where layer hens are still suffering in the extreme confinement of battery or furnished cages. We can change that. We have already seen progress being made in the region by Kafessiz Türkiye in Türkiye. We think focusing on the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt could be particularly promising for a new organization as there are currently no existing organizations working here. Reducing Keel Bone Fractures Keel bone fractures (KBF) are the most important welfare concern in cage-free laying hens. They are caused by their unnaturally high egg-laying demand, lack of space to exercise, and freedom from cages, creating more opportunities for collisions and injuries on farms without appropriate stockmanship and management. We want to see a new organization work in countries that have made the most cage-free progress - particularly Germany, the UK, and the US - to help reduce the prevalence of KBF. We are most excited about this being done through work with certifiers to set targets for KBF prevalence on their farms. For example, Global Animal Partnership Steps 5 and 5+ require KBF prevalence to be at or below 25% on these farms. We think this new organization should first work with certifiers but then consider a pivot to focus on corporate campaigns (or policy) in the medium-to-long term, as these campaigns are more scalable and generally have a stronger evidence base than those with certifiers. East Asian Fish Welfare We continue to recommend a new organization working on fish welfare in neglected countries. We first recommended this idea in October 2022. Since then, we have updated the location and species considerations to make them more open (moving from focusing specifically on milkfish in the Philippines to including other species, such as tilapia, in other countries such as Indonesia and Taiwan). The scale of fish suffering is huge. A staggering 78 to 171 billion individual fish are slaughtered each year, and we still do not yet have an obvious, tested, and scalable ask and approach to improving fish welfare. This is particularly concerning in informal economies where we cannot borrow tactics from previously successful campaigns of the animal movement, such as cage-free corporate campaigning. Informal economies are very common in Asia, where roughly 90% of the global tonnage of farmed fish is produced. We think a new organization working to try and answer these diffic...
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Applications Now Open for AIM's 2025 Programs, published by CE on July 25, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. In short: Applications for AIM's two upcoming programs - the Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program and AIM's new Founding to Give Program - are now open. You can apply to multiple programs with one joint application form. The deadline to apply for all programs is September 15th. Over the past five years, AIM has incubated 40 highly effective nonprofits and secured over $3.9 million in seed grants. These organizations now reach over 35 million people and have the potential to improve the lives of more than 1 billion animals through their interventions. We are incredibly proud of the success achieved by these organizations and their dedicated founders. We believe founding an organization is the most impactful career path for fast-moving, entrepreneurial individuals. In our search for more impact-driven individuals to found field-leading organizations, we are excited to announce that our applications are now open. Dates: Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program: February-March 2025 (8 weeks) July - August 2025 (8 weeks) AIM Founding to Give: 6th of January - 28th of March 2025 (12 weeks) AIM Research Fellowship - Expression of Interest (dates TBD, likely early 2025) About the Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program Why apply? Put simply, we believe that founding a charity is likely one of the most impactful and exciting career options for people who are a good fit. In just a few years of operation, our best charities have gone from an idea to organizations with dozens of staff improving the lives of millions of people and animals every year. We provide the training, funding, research, and mentorship to ensure that people with the right aptitudes and a relentless drive to improve the world can start a charity, no matter their background or prior experience. This could be you! Our initial application form takes as little as 30 minutes - take a look at our applicant resources and apply now. Who is this program for? Individuals who want to make a huge impact with their careers. Charity entrepreneurs are ambitious, fast-moving, and prioritize impact above all. They are focused on cost-effectiveness and are motivated to pilot and scale an evidence-backed intervention. We have found that those from consulting backgrounds, for-profit entrepreneurship, effective NGOs, or recent graduates perform well in this program. What we offer: 2-month full-time training with two weeks in-person in London. Stipend of £1900/month during (and potentially up to 2 months after) the program. Incredibly talented individuals to co-found your new project with. Possibility to apply for $100,000 - $200,000 seed funding (~80% of projects get funded). Membership of the AIM alumni network, connecting you to mentorship, funders, and a community of other founders. The ideas: We are excited to announce our top charity ideas for the upcoming CE incubator. These ideas are the results of a seven-stage research process. To be brief, we have sacrificed nuance. In the upcoming weeks, full reports will be announced in our newsletter, published on our website, and posted on the EA Forum. Cage-free in the Middle East: An organization focused on good-cop cage-free corporate campaigning in neglected countries in the Middle East (United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt). Keel Bone Fractures: A charity working on how farmers can reduce the prevalence of keel bone fractures (KBF) in cage-free layer hens, ideally through outreach to certifiers to update their certification standards to include an outcome-based limit on KBF. Fish Welfare East Asia - We continue to recommend an organization that works with farmers in neglected, high-priority countries in East Asia (Philippines, Taiwan, and Indo...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Healthier Hens Y2.5 update and new avenues, published by lukasj10 on April 19, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR Healthier Hens (HH) aims to improve cage-free hen welfare, focusing on key issues such as keel bone fractures (KBFs). In the last 6 months, we've conducted a vet training in Kenya, found a 42% KBF prevalence, and are exploring alternative promising interventions in collaboration with the Welfare Footprint Project, publishing transferrable findings along the way. Our staff satisfaction remains high, but concerns about operational capacity are on the rise. We're deciding on future strategies, considering funding and organizational changes. Our budget for Y3 ('23 Sep - '24 Sep) is $65k-$135k, with a $0-70k funding gap. In this post, we share key updates, lessons learned and our plans for immediate next steps. We hope others can benefit from what we're observing and our attempts to identify promising pathways towards improved hen health and welfare. We welcome feedback from the community. Key points Healthier Hens (HH) continues looking for ways to address major sources of cage-free egg-laying hen pain such as keel bone fractures (KBFs) through data collection and capacity building. Consider reading our introductory, 6M, 1Y, 1.5Y and 2Y update posts to learn more about our background, mission and updated approach. Due to funding constraints, we had downscaled last year and continue running lean, focusing on identifying promising avenues via mini-projects before piloting anything on the ground. Our Y3 (Sep '23 - Sep '24) budget will mainly comprise of outreach, staff, travel, and potential research activity costs. We raised $65k for this year's work. In our ongoing scoping efforts in Kenya we conducted a KBF baseline case study, a vet training workshop on hen welfare, and are exploring a certification scheme and alternative promising interventions. We continue publishing details on how we go about seeking impact for the hens, including outcomes and lessons learned for others to incorporate in their activities. Our mid-year staff survey revealed overall satisfaction with our culture and values but also some concerns about time commitments and task distribution. Although there is room for improvement, we all still agree that hen welfare is our priority. Our next strategic decision-making point is in May 2024, where we'll choose a scenario from a pool ranging from shutting down to trialling a couple of interventions, depending on the final impact and cost-efficacy estimates. Our funding gap is small and scenario-dependent. Our runway is flexible (3M max.). We will need $0-75k for the second half of 2024. HH team preparing for the vet training, Nairobi, November, 2023. End of vet training, Nairobi, November, 2023. Specific HH Y2.5 updates In-person veterinarian training ( full report here): We partnered with the University of Nairobi and held a two-day training for vet professionals, who visit farms routinely. The main purpose of the training was to provide knowledge on proper hen welfare and grow on-farm assessment capacity among active professionals. We had received over 70 applications and invited 22 veterinarians to attend, 18 of whom attended. Our training was approved by the Kenya Veterinary Board as a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity earning the participants 16 CPD points each - a factor that significantly incentivised the participants. Over two days, 9 experts from various fields provided class lectures and practical sessions in the veterinary surgery room. We concluded the training with a site visit to a cage-free farm to perform on-farm welfare indicator assessments. We conducted pre-, post- and 2-month-post surveys to evaluate the outcomes of the training. Additionally, a key informant survey was conducted six weeks after the ...

Kelly started the Kelly Brush Foundation after a college ski racing accident left her with a severe spinal cord injury at the T 7-8 level, fractured 4 ribs, fractured a vertebra in her neck, and a collapsed lung.Kelly had the ultimate growth mindset, and with the help of her parents set out to start the KBF to change racing safety procedures to prevent this type of accident from happening again. Today the Kelly Brush Foundation has expanded to include a variety of programs and grants that inspire and empower people with spinal cord injuries to lead active and engaged lives.Kelly grew up skiing in Vermont, chasing her friends and family around the slopes of Stowe. At age 7 she got a taste of ski racing and going fast and fell in love with the sport. Kelly was a strong skier in high school at the Green Mountain Valley School (Waitsfield, VT) and landed a spot on the Middlebury College NCAA Alpine Ski Team. Kelly tells us about her own adaptive ski equipment, skiing with her family, and their favorite apres ski traditions. On this exciting episode of Fishing the DMV, I have the pleasure in speaking Jackson Kayak Pro Joshua Evans. Josh finished 2nd in the KBF event held Saturday, April 29 through Sunday, April 30th. Josh gives us insight that'll help everyone become a better Potomac river fisherman. Here are the list of baits Josh used: XCalibur xrk25 and xrk50. Once I lost the 1 xrk25 and 1 xrk50 I had, I pivoted to the rebranded Booyah Baits One Knocker 1/4 oz and 1/2 oz. Also caught a couple of my smaller fish on the Booyah XCS100 squarebill. All baits were Rayburn Red with the exception of the 1/4 oz Booyah. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Healthier Hens Y1.5 Update and scaledown assessment, published by lukasj10 on April 14, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR Healthier Hens (HH) has scaled down due to not being able to secure enough funding to provide a sufficient runway to pilot dietary interventions effectively. We will continue through mini-projects and refining our plan for a feed pilot on the ground until our next organisational assessment at the end of summer 2023. Most efforts will now be spent on reporting, dissemination and fundraising. In this post we share updates, show what went well, less so and what others can learn from our attempts. Our mission and updated approach Keel bone fractures (KBF) are the second biggest source of hens' suffering after behavioural deprivation related to cages, and the biggest in cage-free systems. Our mission remains to reduce the suffering of hens by addressing this source of pain. Numerous studies indicate that dietary interventions can reduce bone fractures. Our goal is to find ways to help hens get adequate nutrition and experience less pain. Besides research and piloting activities, we are doing that by outreach and collaboration with Kenyan cage-free egg farming stakeholders (including farmers, feed mills, universities and regulators) to improve on-farm hen welfare. Please read our introductory, 6M and 1Y update posts to learn more about the background and progress of HH. Due to funding constraints, we have downscaled and now focus on building capacity through mini-projects before piloting an intervention on the ground. HH Y1.5 update We decided to scale down and as of the first of March 2023, HH is a volunteer-led organisation. We will have our next evaluation point at the end of summer 2023. Despite major delays brought on by the presidential elections in Kenya, HH is finally a registered entity in both the US and our country of pilot operations. We carried out two additional farmer workshops in Murang'a and Nakuru counties. A report outlining this work will be published in May 2023. The workshops revealed significant knowledge gaps coupled with expressed interest by the farmers to learn and improve. To retain engagement, we began providing free resources and formed a WhatsApp group to stay connected with motivated cage-free farmers. Cage-free farmer workshop in Nakuru county, October, 2022. Cage-free coalition strategic session in Naivasha in February, 2023. We have published the third volume of our hen feed fortification literature review. This edition focused on nutrient level recommendations and the potential of other additives to improve bone health. We have also published a report outlining our feed sampling findings. It confirms potential issues with Kenyan feed quality and compositional consistency. We are engaged in the formation of a regional cage-free coalition aimed at accelerating transition campaigns, led by African Network for Animal Welfare. We surveyed our staff in February. We generally felt positive about the organization's culture and values. The survey also reveals that we were generally satisfied with our team and work, but were concerned about the impact of the recent decision to downscale. We also felt that there was a lack of critical feedback and constant communication within the team. Our collaboration with the University of Bern indicates negative results of a split-feeding intervention. While we expected a decrease in KBFs without compromising egg quality, surprisingly, poorer egg quality, digestive issues and neutral-to-negative effect on KBFs are observed. To explore alternative fundraising avenues, we looked into several social enterprise concepts, where hen welfare benefits could be attained while also improving the livelihoods of African cage-free farmers. The chosen concept (a hybridised adaptation of the wor...

Today's we cover a fascinating topic: What to do when your party opponents assert a Fifth Amendment or similar privilege in their deposition? Unlike diamonds, privileges aren't necessarily forever. Your opponent can later drop, withdraw, or waive an assertion of privilege. And many litigants do, indeed, try to gain unfair advantage by eleventh-hour waivers, surprising adversaries with previously-shielded information. In this episode, Jim Garrity outlines the problem, and identifies six specific steps to take – in order – to stop this kind of misconduct. As always, our show notes contain the research on which this episode is based. Note that some podcast sites don't display lengthy show notes. Hey Whiskey Ringers, thanks for tuning in to another episode of the Whiskey Ring Podcast. This week's guest is David Mandell, founder of Bardstown Bourbon Company, now of Kentucky Owl and Kentucky Bourbon Festival fame. After a career in government (the NTSB and the FAA) and as a lawyer, David and his college friend decided they wanted to get into distilling. That's the short story - today, he's the Chairman of the Kentucky Bourbon Festival and running Kentucky Owl Bourbon, with a long legacy still in place at Bardstown Bourbon Company. Make sure to grab your tickets to this year's KBF in the show notes below! Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so. I've reworked the levels, and here are a few of the changes: The $5 tier will have access to the new, Patreon-only segment called “Under the Influencer”, where some of your favorite YouTubers/Instagrammers/Podcasters and more join me to talk about a topic that's under their skin in whiskey. This tier will also have priority access to upcoming barrel picks, including one coming up in partnership with the This is my Bourbon Podcast. The $25 tier - for people who really want to propel the pod and website forward - will have the same benefits as the $5 tier plus right of first refusal to join me on future barrel picks, access to my personal inventory, and more. You can still support for as little as $1 a month if you'd like to stay up to date with these changes and news about what we've got coming up. Next: there are THREE upcoming events. After you all made the Jack Daniels events such a success, I had to follow it up, so here's what's coming up: In July, an advent calendar curated by me that includes 15 samples, 15 different producers (and 14 different distilleries), two samples that have whiskey older than I am, and a special pour I promise you won't find anywhere else. This event is available ONLY to people in the Whiskey Ringers Facebook group or to website subscribers. As of this recording, eight of the fifteen spots are already claimed, so grab yours today, and join the Facebook group for discount codes and insider access. In August, I'm switching gears and hosting a two-part event, an introduction to Japanese whisky. The first event on August 11th will focus on the beginnings of Japanese whisky going back to the 17th century and through the founding of Japan's two titans, Suntory and Nikka. The second, on August 18th, will focus on the new guard of Japanese whisky makers and the evolutions of the old guard. Both will start at 8:30pm to accommodate folks in the Mountain and Western time zones. Finally, please do like and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you're listening - it really helps the Whiskey Ring Podcast move up the rankings. If you haven't yet, please follow Whiskey in my Wedding Ring and the Whiskey Ring Podcast on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to the newsletter on the website. Thanks for listening! It's been almost three weeks since I've recorded and the reason why was because Anthony Garcia was on a THREE WEEK TEAR! He won KBF Roosevelt Trail then he won the ABA IRON MAN event on the Delta and then he traveled out to Louisiana to Caddo for KBF and took 2nd place in the trail and 3rd place in the Pro Series! Anthony pocketed almost $10,000 in his three week tear and caught so massive fish doing it! Also I recapped my trip out to TN for the Paddle N Fin event at Dale Hollow! Keep your thumbs ripped!
