On this week's episode we look a one of the finest songwriters to come out of Texas, Guy Clark, and his 1975 debut LP Old No. 1.  While Clark is considered one of the great county and folk songwriters of the latter half of the 20th Century, he is also one of the least appreciated when it comes to recording his own songs. On Old No. 1, he records his own songs, many of which had already been made famous by the likes of the Everly Brothers and Jerry Jeff Walker, among many others. Originally recorded in a way that did not meet Clark's vision, that version was ultimately scrapped. The version that was released was essentially a collection of demos,  that took on new life when guests musicians and friends such as Rodney Crowell, Emmy Lou Harris, Johnny Gimble, Steve Earl, and David Briggs joined in. The album puts the focus squarely where it belongs, on the songwriting and provides a wonderful framework for Clark's poetic and reflective storytelling. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

CTL Script/ Top Stories of March 12th           Publish Date: March 11th    From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast    Today is Tuesday, March 12th, and Happy 75th Birthday to musician James Taylor. ***03.12.24 – BIRTHDAY – JAMES TAYLOR*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  20-Year-Old No Longer Charged in Crash That Injured Bicyclist HOST Referendum Not Moving Forward Canton Names New Police Chief   Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss food longevity.   We'll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you're looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    Commercial: CU of GA   STORY 1: 20-Year-Old No Longer Charged in Crash That Injured Bicyclist The Cherokee Sheriff's Office has withdrawn the felony hit-and-run charge against William James Abbott, a 20-year-old from Acworth. This decision was made following the emergence of new evidence pointing towards the involvement of another vehicle in the incident that left a 78-year-old cyclist with life-threatening injuries on March 3. Initially, Abbott was arrested based on eyewitness accounts and physical evidence at the scene. However, further investigation revealed indications of a second vehicle's involvement, leading to the reconsideration of charges against Abbott. While Abbott is no longer being linked to the crash, he continues to face charges for reckless driving and using a wireless device while driving. Meanwhile, the investigation into the second vehicle's involvement in the incident remains ongoing. STORY 2: HOST Referendum Not Moving Forward A proposed referendum on the Homestead Local Option Sales Tax will not appear on the ballot this fall in Cherokee County due to a failure to second a motion to introduce local legislation during the current General Assembly. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners had proposed a 1% HOST with the intent of offsetting property taxes and funding road improvement projects. In lieu of the HOST, the Cherokee Legislative Delegation approved a proposal to raise the hotel/motel excise tax in unincorporated Cherokee County from 6% to 8%. This proposed increase, subject to approval by the General Assembly, would bring Cherokee County in line with other jurisdictions. The expected additional revenue from this tax hike would be directed towards various projects and organizations, including the Northside Cherokee Conference Center and the Chamber of Commerce. STORY 3: Canton Names New Police Chief The city of Canton has named Martin P. "Marty" Ferrell as the new police chief, following the retirement of former Chief Stephen Merrifield. Ferrell, who brings a wealth of experience from his tenure with the Marietta Police Department, was chosen after a comprehensive national search conducted by Mercer Group Associates. Mayor Bill Grant expressed his faith in Ferrell's capabilities, underscoring that public safety remains a paramount concern for the city. Over the course of his career, Ferrell has overseen a variety of police programs and initiatives and has held numerous leadership roles within the law enforcement sector. Ferrell's selection was based on stringent criteria and considered input from various stakeholders. He is set to begin his new role on March 27, where he will lead a team of 61 employees in a State Certified Law Enforcement Agency. STORY 5: Canton Committee Discussing Expanding Senior Tax Break Mayor Bill Grant of Canton has assembled the City of Canton Tax Exemption Study Committee to consider the possibility of broadening the city's senior tax exemption. The committee includes previous Councilwoman JoEllen Wilson, senior taxpayer Chris Everett, and city residents Kristi Estes and Rajpal Sagoo. Both Mayor Grant and City Manager Billy Peppers serve as advisors during the committee meetings. The committee, which has held two meetings to date, has outlined several objectives. These include reviewing the existing homestead tax exemption for seniors, understanding the process for referendums, and assessing the implications for fire services. During the meeting on March 7, Sagoo suggested that the committee should scrutinize the criteria for the exemption, including its value, the age requirement, and residency stipulations. Presently, Canton provides a homestead exemption up to $280,000 for seniors who are at least 62 years old, along with further provisions for homeowners who are disabled.   Commercial: DRAKE   STORY 6: INGLES – LEAH And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on Food Longevity. ***LEAH MCGRATH*** We'll have closing comments after this.    COMMERCIAL: HENRY CO SHERIFFS   SIGN OFF –   Thanks again for listening to today's Cherokee Tribune Ledger podcast. . Twitter released its open-source algorithm and developers like Robbie and Chuck are digging into the code to find out what they have been hiding. While the recommendation algorithm has been useful, it also has major pitfalls. Twitter's algorithm categorizes and deprioritizes users from appearing on people's feeds which is frustrating when your page is the one being deprioritized. Google launched its AI competitor, Bard. In a rap battle, ChatGPT emerged victorious, and the two AIs even agreed to take over the world together, which the hosts found somewhat creepy. In this episode, Robbie and Chuck talk about biases they discovered in Twitter's open-source algorithm, how developers are turning home networks into high-tech home labs, and how Google's new AI compares to ChatGPT. AUSTIN CONSIGLIEREOLD NO. 1 by Guy Clark (RCA, 1975)Guy Clark's farmhouse was ground zero for a whole generation of America's finest songwriters. Check out the scene in the “Outlaw Country” doc, Heartworn Highways, with the babyfaced Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and Guy harmonizing and trading songs and stories at the kitchen table. This was a summit meeting of Towne Van Zandt's Gospel spreaders keeping the flame of devotion burning- and Guy, Towne's best friend, was John the Baptist. Or, watch that David Letterman clip, 24 years later, with Guy, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Nanci Griffith, Steve, and Rodney standing up there like Mount Rushmore, singing “Desperadoes Waiting for a Train”, and you realize that the gospel seeds that had been spread in the 70's had flowered across the nation. Well, that signature song appears on this, Guy's debut album, and it's like encountering the Dead Sea Scrolls - the original rendition. Add to this the elegiac, definitive version of L.A. Freeway - the song Jerry Jeff made into a folk-rock hit - (with my high school buddy, Jon Simons on harp), and you begin to intuit that you're listening to history being made - and, oddly, it still sounds brand new.To quote the liner notes in Apple Music, a Guy Clark song…”isn't as loose as Walker, or as poetic as Townes Van Zandt, but his songs were the best built.” In 2006, this professional luthier put out the album “Workbench Songs” who's title characterizes his steady carpenter's hand. It was nominated for best Contemporary Folk/Americana Grammy. By this time the much covered consigliere of Austin was a universally acknowledged master and national treasure. In 2019 Steve Earle recorded an album of his mentor's songs and I made the pilgrimage to Amoeba Records to get my copy signed and my picture taken with the man who knew the man who wrote these songs.

The Bonded Series honors the whiskey making excellence of the iconic Jack Daniel Distillery and will be a permanent extension in the Jack Daniel's Family of Brands. Both Jack Daniel's Bonded and Triple Mash are Bottled-in-Bond at 100 proof (50% abv), with packaging inspired by the original design of the 1895 Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey bottle. As stipulated by the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, a bonded whiskey must be distilled by a single distiller during a single season, matured in a government bonded warehouse for at least four years and bottled at 100 proof. “The Jack Daniel Distillery has been making exceptional American whiskey to the highest standards for generations, before and after the Bottled in Bond Act, dating back to the days of Mr. Jack himself,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel's Master Distiller. “Jack Daniel's Bonded and Triple Mash are a nod to our heritage with a touch of innovation and craftsmanship. These whiskeys are another opportunity for both our friends and new drinkers to explore and discover everything Jack Daniel's has to offer.” Jack Daniel's Bonded Tennessee Whiskey Jack Daniel's Bonded is Jack's time-honored recipe of 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye. Barrels were hand selected for their unique and particular characteristics of deeper color, flavor, and aroma, which bring a darker, richer, and more oak-forward character to Jack Daniel's Bonded. It is a big, bold Tennessee Whiskey at 100 proof with layered notes of caramel, rich oak, and spice giving way to a pleasantly lingering finish. Jack Daniel's Triple Mash Blended Straight Whiskey Jack Daniel's Triple Mash is a blend of three straight Bottled-In-Bond whiskeys – 60% Jack Daniel's Tennessee Rye, 20% Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey and 20% Jack Daniel's American Malt. Each expression is distilled in Lynchburg, Tennessee, in the same distilling season, aged to the stipulations of the Bottled in Bond Act, then blended and bottled at 100 proof. It's a remarkable whiskey that can only be crafted by a complete distillery like Jack Daniel's. Jack Daniel's Triple Mash has pleasant notes of honey, malt, and soft oak leading to a long lasting well-rounded finish. Jack Daniel's Bonded and Triple Mash will be available across the US beginning in May with international markets to follow later in 2022. It will initially be available in 700mL bottles for suggested retail prices of $29.99 and $32.99 respectively. They will be available for pre-sale through ReserveBar beginning May 3, 2022 including a limited edition Jack Daniel's gift item while supplies last.
