Tourism is booming in Louisivlle around bourbon. That's why we have our own spot on Whiskey Row opening in April of 2025 but I'm like many of you and I get skeptical because I want to know some of the real numbers. It's a good thing I'm still friends with my former college roommate because my buddy Michael Fetter works with Louisville Tourism who tracks the data of how tourism dollars are spent in this city. WIthout giving away too much, it doesn't look like tourism is slowing down anytime soon. Mike Lisac (My Whiskey Den) was in Louisville and we took that opportunity to hit up a few spots on the famous Whiskey Row. Our adventures also took us to a couple of stops beyond there, too.We visited Bardstown Bourbon Co., the bar at Michter's Fort Nelson, Buzzard's Roost (sort of), and Whiskey Thief's new tasting room. Afterwards, we caught up with our friend Benjamin Eaves at the soft opening of Kentucky Artisan Distiller's new tasting room. We finished our time on the town with dinner at one of our favorite spots, Bourbons Bistro.I hope you'll enjoy this show as we give you some tourist tips as we recount our adventures on Whiskey Row and beyond!

This year's class, in alphabetic order, were officially inducted into the Hall of Fame September 10: Elmer Lucille Allen, 93, Louisville. A pioneering activist, Allen broke barriers in the Bourbon industry as the first Black chemist at Brown-Forman – and possibly the entire American whiskey industry. Her work to bring opportunity to all Louisvillians didn't stop when she left the company. Amongst her many accomplishments, she formed the Chickasaw Little League and led efforts to bring African American art and artists to the mainstream. Dee Ford, 59, Louisville. An international beacon of Bourbon hospitality. Ford's vision, experience and leadership have catapulted Angel's Envy and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail into an international, bucket-list tourism attraction. Since 2014, she's served as Chair of the KDA's Kentucky Bourbon Trail Committee, earning the respect of her peers and sharing best practices that have leveraged hospitality to elevate Kentucky Bourbon on the global stage. Ken Lewis, 71, Cincinnati. A spirits expert and groundbreaking policy leader, Lewis graduated college as a trained English teacher, but left shortly into his young career for the world of spirits retail. He championed efforts for Sunday sales and initiated litigation that allowed retailers to use credit cards for sales, eventually building The Party Source megastore, the first of its kind in the country. Learning the industry from the bottom up, Lewis brought innovation and entrepreneurship as the founder of New Riff Distilling in Northern Kentucky, paving the way for the craft Bourbon boom that now counts dozens of Kentucky distilleries. The late Peter T. Loftin, 61, Miami. A preeminent innovator, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Loftin founded the Bardstown Bourbon Company that transformed the landscape of custom whiskey production in 2014. He was among the first to take advantage of modernized Bourbon tourism laws in Kentucky, creating a world-class restaurant and bar that graciously features every distillery's brand on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail tour as well as an enviable vintage spirits lounge. Along with the state-of-the-art distillery, this high-value Napa Valley-style experience greatly raised the bar for Bourbon tourism and collaborative distilling. He died peacefully at his home in 2019. R.M. Corky Taylor, 75, Henderson, Ky. A respected businessman throughout the country, Taylor retired from an accomplished career in financial services and focused on a lifelong dream – to resurrect his great-grandfather's whiskey company. Taylor and his son spent countless hours poring over family history to bring back the Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co., originally owned by Henry Kraver in Henderson. He built back the family legacy in Louisville along historic Whiskey Row, gaining national recognition – and national awards – by patiently waiting for his whiskey to age, living up to the original quality Bourbon standards his ancestor first set in 1889. In this episode of Barrel Room Chronicles, I had the opportunity to attend the Bourbon Women's WOW Awards in Louisville, Kentucky. The episode featured interviews with notable figures in the whiskey industry, including Joyce and Autumn Nethery from Jeptha Creed, whiskey writer Maggie Kimbrel, master distiller Marianne Eaves from Forbidden Bourbon, and Heather Greene, CEO and master blender at Milam & Green Distillery.
Sometimes you have to power through the beginnings of things. That seemed to be the case for the Louisville Economic Development Alliance (LEDA), a newly-formed group of local business leaders who are taking the reins of economic development under Mayor Craig Greenberg. The group got started this week under buggy circumstances, as Reporter Michael L. Jones explains on the Access Louisville podcast. Some of the issues included a failed attempt to record the public meeting, microphone feedback and an awkwardly arranged room that had members of the alliance sitting with their backs to the press in attendance. In spite of the issues, the effort does bring a lot of the city's biggest players in business to the table to focus on economic development. Among the board members are Lawson Whiting, president and CEO of Brown-Forman; Bill Carstanjen, CEO of Churchill Downs Inc. and Brian Cromer, partner and chair of the business and finance group at Stites & Harbison, PLLC. You can see the full list of who's on the board here. Also on the show this week, we discussed recent news that Fabletics is closing its Louisville facility. While the job losses are difficult, we reflect on whether there is a wider trend toward fatigue with subscription-based services. We also chat about a new bourbon attraction and upscale restaurant opening next to the KFC Yum Center on Whiskey Row. The facility opens in Main Street space that formerly housed Bearno's — and there's a Bearno's partner involved in the deal to establish the new spot, as Reporter Stephen P. Schmidt explains. Finally, we wrap up the show on a somber note by discussing the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a rally last week in Virginia. Sadly, the attempt served as a grim reminder of the dangers of political violence in America. It hit particularly close to home for Mayor Greenberg, who survived as assassination attempt himself while running for Mayor. Reporter Piper Hansen reflected on listening to the mayor talk about it during a press conference this week.

Michter's 20: The 20-Year Bourbon expression reflects the exceptional results of uncompromising craftsmanship and Kentucky's unrivaled climate for aging outstanding whiskey. Often much older than the age statement on the label, only a select few barrels age with the elegance required for inclusion in this highly 114.2 proof limited release. Old Forester 1920: The Volstead Act of 1920 which initiated Prohibition in the USA granted permits to six distillers in Kentucky to continue to bottle bourbon for medicinal purposes. Through one of these permits, Old Forester continued to be produced as medicinal whiskey on Louisville's famed Whiskey Row. It is the only bourbon continuously sold by the same company that has been available for sale before, during and after Prohibition. During this time, all whiskies had to be bottled at 100 Proof. With a barrel entry proof of 100, the “angel's share” would have created a 115 proof whiskey after maturation. To pay homage to this era, Old Forester presents 1920 Prohibition Style Bourbon at 115 proof to represent the rich flavor profile this bourbon had nearly 100 years ago.

Melissa Rift, Master Taster for Old Forester, joins us today to tell us why Old Forester is the *best* Bourbon for your home bar. What is a 'Master Taster?' Melissa trained under legendary distillers Chris Morris and Elizabeth McCall of Old Forester & Woodford Reserve and handles much of the quality control for Old Forester whiskies. Melissa also works on innovative projects, like their new 117 series. Why the Pairing Works: Old Forester is the best bang for your buck on your back bar, but Melissa has also given us a 4-course meal with the "Whiskey Row" series Melissa's 4-Course Pairing Last Supper: Old Forester 1870. The fruits & florals of this whiskey pair perfectly with something citrusy like an arugula salad with parmesan cheese Old Forester 1897 Bottled- n-Bond . The woodsy, spicy, and earthy notes of this Bourbon will pair perfectly with a fatty cheese course, like burrata, and good crusty bread. The black pepper backbone will go perfectly with any fat, including charcuterie. Old Forester 1920 with prime rib! Going a little out of turn here, but it's time for a protein. This higher proof (115) cask strength whiskey has notes of salted dark chocolate and will pair well with the complexity of rare meat. Old Forester 1910 & banana bread pudding. This double barrel expression goes splendidly with any dessert, but the underlying banana tones of the 1910 will complement each other perfectly! What Makes These "Whiskey Row" Bourbons Special: Each of these whiskies mark a "First:" 1870 - The first whiskey released in a glass bottle 1897 - Old Forester's first Bottled-in-Bond 1910 - The first recorded double barrel expression, due to a major fire 1920 - the Prohibition bottle, 120 Proof. True Crime Podcast 2024 - REAL Police Interrogations, 911 Calls, True Police Stories and True Crime
"You Are a Disgrace!" | California Cop Arrested in Arizona On November 14, 2020, now-former Roseville Police Officer Drew Scott Romo was arrested by officers with the Scottsdale Police Department on suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct. Prior to arresting Romo, officers had contacted him multiple times throughout the night at a variety of locations regarding "his disruptive behavior." Romo had been removed from Whiskey Row for being overly intoxicated. He also became aggressive and confrontational with security. Romo then crossed the street and attempted to enter El Hefe, but was denied entry for being overly intoxicated. Romo "again became aggressive and confrontational with security," and was screaming at the bar's security personnel before officers arrived and intervened. The following quotes are excerpted from the police report and supplements: "My intervention withe Drew at El Hefe was brief, as Drew's friend's were holding him back and telling him to leave. I merely encouraged Drew to call it night as he was obviously too intoxicated and disorderly to enter into any establishment. It was then learned when security from Whiskey Row came over to El Hefe and both parties advised Drew was claiming to be a police officer that our interest was now drawn more to him. Myself and assisting officers again tried to encourage Drew to go home to prevent any further disturbances based on his job title." "Sgt. Weishaar then contacted Drew as I made contact with the reporting party at International. The reporting party, Edgar Suarez. of International stated Drew was also just removed from their bar (third bar in the night) for over intoxication. Edgar stated once Drew was outside of the bar, he was attempting to "fight" everyone that was passing by and everyone in line at their bar. Edgar said he observed Drew take a fighting stance, puff out his chest, and say "you want to have a problem" with a group of patrons a waiting in line. Edgar told me, he then told Drew to leave and notified police." "Once at the Jail, Drew's disorderly behavior continued which delayed his booking process. Drew was described as being disruptive, repeatedly banging on his jail cell door and calling 911 multiple times without having an emergency." "A taxi was requested for Drew once he stopped banging on his cell door. I released Drew at around 0330 to a taxi, providing him a sober ride home. Drew signed his cite and was given a copy prior to his release." "We made contact with Drew and advised him it was probably time to go home based on his level of intoxication. Drew became argumentative and wanted to know why we believed that. Drew's friends began telling him we were right, it was time to leave and they tried walking him away. Drew refused at first, was trying to push back toward us but, ultimately started walking away. He paused for a few minutes while his friends tried to negotiate with him. He eventually began walking off toward INTL Nightclub. One of Drew's friends apologized for his actions, told me they had been trying to get Drew to go home all night but, he will not listen to anyone. He also advised Drew was pretty intoxicated before going out the bars and they tried to convince him to stay at the house and Drew refused. We eventually rode over to INTL for few minutes to keep an eye on Drew. Drew was ultimately admitted into INTL at which point Officer Clore made contact with security staff about Drew. We then cleared." According to Lieutenant Chris Ciampa with the Rosedale Police Department, Romo was a police officer with the Rosedale Police Department at the time of his arrest. Romo's employment began as a police officer trainee on July 3, 2019. Romo's last day of employment was November 18, 2020 — four days after this arrest. According to Lieutenant Ciampa, "The Roseville Police Department holds every employee to a high standard as we represent the City of Roseville and our Community." Romo was charged with assault and disorderly conduct. On March 23, 2021, Romo pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. Romo was fined a total of $650. The assault charge was dismissed. According to Romo's LinkedIn profile, he now "ha[s] the honor of serving the Lord full time" as the assistant director of a church in Rocklin, California.

Tasting Notes: When Brown Forman SOLD the Early Times brand to Sazerac in 2020, they must have kept some choice barrels of that mashbill behind which were bottled initially WAY back as Early Times 354, and later the straight whiskey version of Early Times itself, which was then, and still is a sleeper hit. Fast Forward to 2024 with the release of this latest "Whiskey Row" series, and BF is rolling out a 10 year version the this 79% corn, 11% rye, and 10% malted barley mashbill in the form of Old Forester 1924, commemorating a year when mashbills and whiskies from Prohibition-closed distilleries arrived on their doorsteps. It's a clever bit of marketing with some actual factual parallels, but setting all that aside, what's it taste like? First off, I LOVE the straight ET for its brown sugary goodness, along with lots of sweet body and traditional leather and spice flavors. The mixer whiskey for ET always had to be a little sweeter because that's what that target demo demanded, and so once you saddle 10 years of age and bottle at an appropriate 100 proof you're left with an OUTSTANDING whiskey in 1924. It actually tastes sweeter and younger than its age statement, but that's the point. Sweet sugar goodness from start to finish. If you want something different and little more lively in your glass, go for this!

Industrial distribution is so much more than just shipping boxes. It's an essential part of the manufacturing process and, without it, customers would never see the products they need. But how has industrial distribution evolved? What does it mean to be a distributor today? And what does the distributor of the future look like? We can't believe we've never dived into industrial distribution on Manufacturing Happy Hour, but better late than never! Here to shed some light is Nate Bucklew, a district manager with E&H Electrical Supply, an electrical distributor based in Louisville, Kentucky. Nate shares how his role has evolved into a fully-fledged service provider and explains why the customer is central to success in distribution. Plus, he tells us why Louisville is such a special place and leaves us with some unmissable tips on career progression. What we discuss with Nate: How his family history of industrial work led him to pursue a career in manufacturing himself, working in a warehouse and returning to manufacturing full-time after graduation Nate explains why patience and building trust and strong relationships is integral as you lay the foundations for a progressive career in manufacturing Manufacturing is a distinct part of Louisville's identity and plays a huge role in why it is a fast-growing city To instigate and execute a successful digital transformation, manufacturing leaders must help their teams understand the reasoning behind the change Nate explains why the product is irrelevant if it doesn't reach the customer at the desired speed. Distribution is an often overlooked but incredibly important part of the manufacturing process Nate shares how industrial distribution has undergone a transformation and tells us why leaders in his field have seen their job roles expand and become service providers Why the future of the manufacturing industry lies with people and their abilities to learn and progress. Technology will also play a critical part as distributors work to build even stronger trust with customers Why the most important thing for industrial distribution is understanding and delivering what the customer wants Enjoying the show? Please leave us a review here. Even one sentence helps. It's feedback from Manufacturing All-Stars like you that keeps us going! Tweetable Quotes: “We're a people business. What we do is much more than just providing boxes.” “Everything we do is based around transparency and integrity as a baseline.” “We better be darn sure that, as we strive to solve our customers' problem, we're not poking another customer or distributor in the eye. It's a nimble journey.” Links & mentions: E&H Electric Supply, a division of CED, E&H is the #1 source for automation & electrical supplies in the Kentuckiana area Repeal, Whiskey Row's only oak-fired steakhouse, located in downtown Louisville housed in the former site of J.T.S. Our most recent press release revealed to the public the plans to put a physical location and experience for Bourbon Pursuit and Pursuit Spirits in the heart of downtown Louisville, Kentucky. Today, the guys open up about the plans for the location, some of the challenges so far, and challenges coming up in the foreseeable future. We hit on: What led to the opportunity for a physical space for Pursuit downtown? What does it mean to be a passion project of the industry instead of a legacy-driven name like other bourbon experiences people have been able to go to thus far? What do you hope people can experience in the Pursuit space that is unlike other bourbon experiences? What are some of the hurdles you've had to go through so far in getting the space to where it is now? What are some of the future challenges or fears you see still in the way? and much more. This week, in Prescott, Arizona, a very smart, successful couple make a very nice life for themselves, in a wonderful custom built home. Eventually, 17 affairs cause them to separate, and divorce. Once everything is final, all seems fine, until one of them is on the phone, and the words "oh no" are said, followed by the line going dead. A terribly bumbling investigation of the bloody & horrific crime scene follows, complete with awful police work. Footprints, tire tracks & DNA only confuse the whole thing. Will anyone ever pay for this terrible murder??Along the way, we find out that anyone can be in the rodeo, that a gun & a flashlight aren't enough to make grown man confident enough to look into a bloody house, and that DNA under the nails doesn't exactly mean that you have your killer!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports!
