In this episode of Seeing Them Live, host Charles Zona is joined by his daughter Lily for a conversation about her journey into live music — starting from the very beginning. The episode opens with a throwback to Charles's first-ever podcast test recording, where an 11-year-old Lily had never been to a concert. From there, Lily traces her love of Harry Styles back to the COVID era, when her mom played his album Fine Line around the house. That early introduction blossomed into a full-blown fandom, and when Harry's House dropped and the tour kicked off, the family set their sights on seeing him live — not in Chicago, but in Lisbon, Portugal. What followed was a months-long ordeal to secure Lily's passport in time for the show. After the initial application was denied due to an improperly notarized form — and then delayed a second time because the passport agency itself had sent an outdated version of the required document — the family found themselves scrambling with barely days to spare. Charles details the frantic calls to the passport agency, the last-ditch email to Illinois representative Sean Casten, and the miraculous late-night moment when Lily checked the passport status on her dad's phone and discovered it had shipped. They picked it up Monday morning and were on a flight to Portugal that afternoon, arriving just in time for the Tuesday night concert at the 60,000-capacity Passeio Marítimo de Algés. The concert itself didn't disappoint. Lily and Charles describe the electric atmosphere, from 60,000 fans belting out Bohemian Rhapsody before the show to Harry's Alan Watts-inspired intro and the surprise appearance by Wet Leg. Lily shares her favorite moments, including an intimate acoustic performance of Matilda on the catwalk and a close encounter during Late Night Talking. The episode wraps up with a look at Lily's growing concert resume — including Olivia Rodrigo at Lollapalooza 2025 (with a surprise Weezer cameo) and up-and-coming country artist Maddox Batson — plus the exciting news that the family has tickets to see Harry Styles again at Madison Square Garden on his upcoming Together, Together tour in support of his new album Kiss All the Time, Disco Occasionally. BANDS: Harry Styles, Lainey Wilson, Maddox Batson, Muscadine Bloodline, Olivia Rodrigo, Queen, Weezer, Wet Leg. VENUES: Allstate Arena, Grant Park (Lollapalooza), Madison Square Garden, Passeio Marítimo de Algés, Salt Shed, United Center. Ever wonder why certain songs follow you from ballparks to bar bands to late-night TV finales? We take a playful but pointed run at the “most overplayed song” ever with a live listener bracket that pits Free Bird, Don't Stop Believin', Sweet Caroline, Brown Eyed Girl, and more in a ruthless showdown. Along the way, we unpack what repetition really means, how stadium anthems, wedding playlists, and radio gold become rituals that comfort some of us and exhaust the rest. You'll leave with your hill to die on and a few hot takes from fellow fans to test your case. Before the sparks fly, we open with a rapid-fire look at Ella Langley, state champion dancer, voice-shifting surgery, a pellet gun for pests, bangs born from a bad haircut, and a one-pickle pre-show ritual that weirdly works. That personal color tees up a high-energy country news sweep: Lainey Wilson teams with Kevin Costner on The Grey House soundtrack beside titans like Willie Nelson and Shania Twain; Riley Green stretches into acting with a Yellowstone-adjacent series; Rascal Flatts hit RodeoHouston; Meghan Moroney and Ella Langley notch a chart milestone for women in country; Thomas Rhett welcomes baby number five; Luke Combs and Dierks Bentley map new tours; and LeAnn Rimes and Rodney Crowell drop fresh tracks. We also spotlight the Recording Academy's new Best Traditional Country Album category debuting in 2026—an overdue nod to classic songwriting and instrumentation. We round things out with a tight chart countdown spanning radio favorites and indie gems, a March 2016 flashback that tracks how we got here, and a lively mailbag: production vs. songwriting first impressions, dream guests (from Rick Beato to Mutt Lange and Kelly Clarkson), and the gear that changed everything as studios moved from tape to Pro Tools. It's a full-spectrum listen for country fans, music nerds, and anyone who has ever yelled “Free Bird!” at the wrong time.Episode LinksBob Bullock: https://jayfranze.com/episode28/Dave Jackson: https://jayfranze.com/episode53/Dalila Mya: https://jayfranze.com/episode102/Mark Badolato: https://jayfranze.com/episode140/Send a text Support the showLinks Jay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/ JFS Country Countdown: https://jayfranze.com/countdown/ Contact Contact: https://jayfranze.com/contact/ Socials Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranze TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jayfranze X: https://x.com/jayfranze YouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranze Services Services: https://jayfranze.com/services/ Books Books: https://jayfranze.com/books/ Merchandise Merchandise: https://jayfranze.com/merchandise/ Support Support: https://jayfranze.com/support/ Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/

One of our best up and coming country music talents is being recognised across the ditch. Zac Griffith is a self-taught musician from Tapawera, near Nelson, and his rise started at the Gold Guitar Awards, which he won in 2023 at the age of 18. He joined Kaylee Bell on tour last year, and got a co-sign from Entertainer of the Year, Lainey Wilson. Griffith told Mike Hosking that Bell has been a big influence and cheerleader for him. “She really has boosted my confidence, especially with taking me on that tour that she did last year,” he explained. “It's, you know, getting the praise from people that you look up to – people that are doing what you want to be doing.” Griffith had won a handful of country music awards before taking home the Gold Guitar, but it was that award that reinforced his path in music. “Winning that really was, was a testament to me, and was, yeah the thing that made me go, okay, I must be doing alright.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For 15 years, Lainey Wilson chased a dream that didn’t seem to want her back. She was rejected. Overlooked. Living in a camper trailer in Nashville while the industry moved on without her. Now she’s one of country music’s biggest stars. In this episode of No Filter, Lainey reflects on the decade-and-a-half grind behind her so-called “overnight success” from auditioning for Idol and The Voice, to impersonating Hannah Montana for five years, to going viral in a way she never expected. She talks about faith, exhaustion, ambition, meeting Miley Cyrus after years of portraying her on stage, and the advice from Keith Urban that reframed everything. Think the Grammys always reward the biggest voices? We put that idea on trial. From Luke Combs and Blake Shelton to Eric Church and Martina McBride, we map the stunning list of country heavyweights with multiple nominations and zero wins—and ask what those numbers really say about merit, timing, and taste. Then we widen the lens: Jelly Roll's breakout sweep, Zac Top's historic Traditional Country win, and how a single new category can rewrite a career's story overnight. We keep the momentum with a packed news slate: Lainey Wilson's cryptic “Can't Sit Still” teasers and possible Netflix tie‑in, Hardy's cinematic multi‑generational collab featuring Tim McGraw, Eric Church, and Morgan Wallen, Tim McGraw's Pawn Shop Guitar tour routing through Fenway Park, and The Voice's two‑hour season launch after the Winter Games. Along the way, we talk performance versus polish, the role of auto‑tune in modern crossovers, and why some artists soar on stage even if the trophies never land. Our community brings the heat with the Question of the Day: name an artist who left a famous band and built a real solo legacy. From Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Stevie Nicks, and Peter Gabriel to Darius Rucker and Peter Cetera, your picks fuel a rapid-fire tour through rock, country, pop, and beyond. We balance it with a transparent look at the business: do labels still help, or are they just advances with branding? Is touring truly profitable for rising acts in vans and trailers? And how do indie artists build durability when playlist spikes fade?We round it out with a sharp chart rundown—main and indie—plus a 2006 flashback to Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, and George Strait, showing how yesterday's storytelling still shapes today's sound. If you love country music, industry strategy, and a lively back-and-forth that doesn't hedge, this one's for you.Enjoyed the show? Welcome to your daily comedy podcast, where absolutely nothing makes sense and we like it that way.Today's show kicks off with a story that nobody asked for but everyone will remember forever: a 73-year-old former born-again Christian reinventing herself as an escort named Busty Granny. She spent decades in prayer and celibacy, then hit 57, downloaded the internet, and said “oh… THIS is what we've been missing.” Now she's got clients young enough to still have homework and zero interest in OnlyFans because, quote, that sounds boring. Inspirational? Traumatizing? Both. Then we get into the most depressing career math of all time: a woman casually sings seven words into her phone for a Dr Pepper jingle and walks away with $2 million, while the rest of us are out here working full-time jobs and eating gas-station sandwiches. Naturally, this leads to the crew trying to invent jingles for every brand that will absolutely never call back.Somehow that spirals into one of the most fun debates we've had in a while — the biggest debut albums of all time. We're talking massive numbers, MTV miracles, and how one 4am spin turned a “failed” album into a 50-million-copy monster. Along the way we argue, forget basic facts, remember them loudly, and realize radio used to be way more powerful than TikTok will ever admit.Movies get dragged (respectfully… mostly), Brendan Fraser gets the comeback love he deserves, and we debate whether seeing a movie in a theater automatically adds two letter grades just because popcorn exists. In Crap on Celebrities, we hit everything from band lawsuits and surprise documentaries to tour dropouts, concert ticket chaos, and some genuinely heartbreaking but honest conversations about aging, memory, and how terrifying it is to not know what's happening inside your own brain. We also celebrate birthdays, overshare existential dread, and somehow end the show discussing a literal geyser of poop water blasting into the Potomac River — because if we're going to spiral, we're doing it together. It's another daily comedy podcast episode packed with weird news, pop culture, dark laughs, and moments where we all pause and go, “Wait… are we okay?”Spoiler: probably not. But at least we're funny.MUSICMotley Crue has officially won its heated legal battle against former guitarist Mick Mars. Lainey Wilson sure has kept herself busy. It was just announced that Netflix has officially acquired the new documentary "Lainey Wilson: Keepin' Country Cool". It drops on April 22nd. Two more artists have dropped out of the 2026 Rock the Country Festival. Morgan Wade and Carter Faith are no longer part of the lineup. And neither artist has shared an official reason for stepping away. Their exit comes just days after Ludacris also dropped out. His team called his original booking a "mix-up." The festival is headlined by Kid Rock and will feature Jason Aldean, Jelly Roll, Miranda Lambert, and more.In other Kid Rock News – he went to Congress to confront an issue we're all united on: How much Ticketmaster and Live Nation charge for shows. Quick Hits:Post Malone, Andrew Watt, Chad Smith, Duff McKagan, and Slash will perform a special tribute to Ozzy Osbourne during the Grammys on Sunday night.Jack White posted a video showing off the next Third Man Vault package, Jimi Hendrix's Valley of the Jams 1969-1970. Check it out on Instagram.Tom Morello and Rise Against will headline A Concert of Solidarity & Resistance to Defend Minnesota Friday at noon at First Avenue in Minneapolis. TVThe fourth season of Ted Lasso is set to debut this summer. Stephen Colbert announced on "Late Night With Seth Meyers" that the final episode of "The Late Show" will air on Thursday, May 21. MOVING ON INTO MOVIE NEWS:Matthew Lillard recently caught a stray from Quentin Tarantino when he said he didn't care for him. But that resulted in an outpouring of love that made Matthew feel like he was living through his own wake. Actress and producer Patricia Schneider has filed for divorce from Rob Schneider, describing their 15-year marriage as "irretrievably broken" with no chance of reconciliation. Bill Cosby has admitted under oath that he obtained prescriptions for Quaaludes specifically to give to women. Bruce Willis' wife, Emma says Bruce is unaware of his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis.AND FINALLYHere are five of the BEST:1. Jack Black: "I was begging my boss for an extra shift, he overheard and tipped me $100 on a $20ish tab. From then on, he never left me less than a $50 tip and would always check in with me when it was the end of the month to make sure I had rent cash."2. Harrison Ford: "My uncle said that he's incredibly nice and took the whole crew out for lunch to thank them for working on his helicopter."3. Justin Bieber: "He was by himself at a mall, and he wasn't trying to be incognito . . . He drew me in with a big hug and chatted me up. He was lovely."4. John Travolta: "The guy is totally down to earth . . . He is also someone who asks a lot of questions and is actually interested in what you have to say."5. Dolly Parton: "Can confirm that she's just as great as you'd assume. She was just so nice to everyone. She was a lot smaller than I expected."Here are five of the WORST:1. Jennifer Lopez: "She was super rude and dismissive . . . and had this attitude that she was better than you."2. Jenna Fischer from "The Office": "[She] was really difficult to work with. Just really demanding."3. Jared Leto: "[He's] a narcissistic [A-hole]. He complains about every single thing and really enjoys being difficult. I think he does it for fun."4. Diana Ross: "[She] cut in front of me at the airport check-in counter once . . . I was flabbergasted by this lady who had the guts to sweep in front of us AND touch the gate agent's computer."5. Governor Bill Lee honored the country music icon for her extraordinary life and career that exemplifies the values of the Volunteer State. The birthday celebration centered on a star-studded musical gift. Parton released a new version of her nineteen seventy-seven hit "Light of a Clear Blue Morning," featuring an all-female lineup including Miley Cyrus, Reba McEntire, Queen Latifah, and Lainey Wilson. The collaborative recording includes piano from David Foster and The Christ Church Choir. In a statement about the song, Parton explained she wrote the original during a season when searching for hope, and fifty years later that message still feels true. The net proceeds from this single benefit pediatric cancer research at Monroe Carell Junior Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville. Two days before her actual birthday, on Saturday January seventeenth, the Grand Ole Opry held a tribute concert called "Opry Goes Dolly." Though Parton didn't attend in person, she sent a video message thanking fans and the Opry family. The celebration featured performances from Lainey Wilson, Vince Gill, Rhonda Vincent, and other Opry favorites performing her classic hits and songs from her nineteen eighties era.Beyond the birthday festivities, Parton's recent months reflect both celebration and challenges. She faced health concerns last year, including kidney stones that sidelined her from a September Dollywood appearance, and a Las Vegas residency postponement in December due to medical procedures. Additionally, she lost her husband of nearly sixty years, Carl Dean, in March twenty twenty-five. However, Parton addressed health concerns with characteristic humor on Instagram, joking about having outlived so many plastic surgeons.Looking forward, Parton continues expanding her business empire. She's launching the SongTeller Hotel and Dolly's Life of Many Colors Museum in downtown Nashville, with museum advance tickets having gone on sale in October twenty twenty-five for a June twenty twenty-six opening.
