Riding Shotgun With Charlie #251 Craig DeLuz   I'm not sure how long I've known Craig but it has been several years. We finally made it happen in Salt Lake City, UT, at the Gun Rights Policy Conference. He does a show with Mike Piwowarski (RSWC #104 ) called The Rundown. But he's also had Coffee with Craig, a morning show that keeps you up to date on the goings on with 2A and conservative issues.    Craig grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. He had a twin brother and the only thing they really shared was parents. They were the opposite in nearly every way, from the positions they played in football to where they went for college, to their political beliefs, to their career choices. Despite their upbringing, Craig leaded towards conservatism while he was in college studying finance.    In college, he decided that he was going to run for student body president. One of his professors said they'll never have a black student body president. That's what he pursued and won the election by less than 1% of the vote. The experience led him to realize he believed in individual rights and responsibilities, entrepreneurship. These were values he was raised with even though his parents were Democrats.    The experience of getting elected got him more interested in politics. This led to getting involved and leading several groups and working in the legislature. Eventually, he crossed paths with Brandon Combs, who was the founder and President of Firearms Policy Coalition. Since FPC was looking for someone to do some media  and have someone with experience and knowledge of the legislature, they hired Craig to do just that.   At 40 years old, he purchased his first firearm. Not growing up with firearms in the house, they didn't have firearms when the kids were young. But once the kids were teens, they decided it was time. Gun ownership in California means you have to know a lot of legal topics about owning, possessing, and carrying. It was then he realized that the Golden State was infringing on his, and everyone else's, Rights. In 2012 after Sandy Hook, California dropped over 50 anti-gun bills. His career took the path to being a lobbyist and advocate.    The NRA Director for California, Ed Worley, told him the legislature was kabuki theatre. So Craig decided to put on a show. Each side gets two people and two minutes to state their case for the debate. He was able to put his theatre background to use. The battle out there means you have to get used to "winning the argument, but losing the vote."  Using the clips from the debates, they were able to get more people informed about the nonsense going on.  The shows in the kabuki theatre parlayed into starting things like Coffee with Craig, where he did morning videos about the goings on in California, the gun community, and other news topics. This was the start of people doing channels about the goings on in the gun community and more personalities out there putting out content, stories, and headlines. It was after this that he started doing The Rundown with Mike, which was a daily show. Craig has also started Uncommon Sense Media Group that helps people with their socials, website, video and audio recording, and public relations for media shows and companies.     In 2024, Craig ran for Congress. He didn't make it but he's going to run again in 2026. The toughest thing is dialing for dollars, making the calls to ask for money and support. He says it's the worst part of running for office but it is necessary.    What I really enjoy is finding out more about what people do. Craig has been at it a long time. Studying finance. Raising a family at a young age. Working in politics. Doing media. Hosting a couple of shows. Starting a media group. Brandon Combs is a drummer, programmer, and producer hailing from Lansing, Michigan. Destined to be a great musician, Brandon has been involved with the Grammy Foundation since the young age of 15, attending their Grammy Camp programs in 2009 and 2010 via full ride scholarship. Now living in Nashville, Brandon recently obtained his BM in Popular Music Studies from the University of Southern California (2015). Currently on tour with Grammy Award-winning artist Leon Bridges, Brandon's skill, versatility, and professionalism have also allowed him to work with many different world-renown artists across multiple genres such as Keith Urban, Raphael Saadiq, Moses Sumney, Lupe Fiasco, NIIA, Gallant, Chris Bullock of Snarky Puppy, and many more. Some of his most recently completed projects include recording drums on John Legend's A Legendary Christmas album (2019) and the entirety of jazz-pianist Mark De Clive Lowe's double album Heritage (2019). He's also put his hands into music production, co-producing the song “Famous” off of The Internet's Grammy-nominated album Ego Death (2016). A former Concord police officer says his civil rights were violated after he was fired by the department in a lawsuit against the city.Timothy Larson filed a lawsuit against the city of Concord and Gary Gacek, Concord police chief, on Tuesday. Larson was fired in May 2022, months after he was involved he shot a man in self-defense at a car dealership. That incident happened on Feb. 13 around 5 a.m. at the Modern Nissan Dealership in Concord. A former Concord police officer says his civil rights were violated after he was fired by the department in a lawsuit against the city. Timothy Larson filed a lawsuit against the city of Concord and Gary Gacek, Concord police chief, on Tuesday.  Larson was fired in May 2022, months after he was involved he shot a man in self-defense at a car dealership.  That incident happened on Feb. 13 around 5 a.m. at the Modern Nissan Dealership in Concord.  South Carolina senators rejected a ban on almost all abortions Thursday in a special session called in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Although Republicans had a majority of votes to pass the ban, Republican Sen. Tom Davis threatened to filibuster and proponents of the ban could not get the extra votes to stop him. Davis, the chief of staff for former Gov. Mark Sanford before being elected to the Senate in 2009, was joined by the three Republican women in the Senate, a fifth GOP colleague and all the chamber's Democrats to oppose the proposed ban. Davis opposes a blanket ban on abortions in South Carolina and said he would argue against the bill until the 46-member Senate mustered the 26 votes required to end the filibuster. That appeared unlikely to happen, as only after 24 senators voted for an amended bill that included exceptions for pregnancies cause by rape or incest up to 12 weeks after conception. Twenty senators were opposed and two were absent. After a recess to work through their options, Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey conceded the abortion ban likely couldn't pass, although a vote to end debate had not been taken. ”This is a math question, you have to have the votes to pass it - and we do not,” Massey said. Davis said he promised his daughters he would not vote to make South Carolina's current six-week abortion ban stricter because women have rights, too. The Concord Police Department said former Concord police officer Timothy Larson was on routine patrol when he says he saw 29-year-old Brandon Combs trying to steal a vehicle from the dealership. Police said during their interaction, Combs jumped into the driver's seat of the police SUV. The body camera video shows the moments before Larson pulled the trigger. Police said Larson shot Combs after Combs ignored several commands to stop.  The State Bureau of Investigation found that Larson did not use excessive force in the deadly shooting because Combs was driving a vehicle pointed at Larson.
