SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter
This episode of SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter, goes back to the Olympic indoor scene, with middle blocker Dana Rettke. Rettke, who stands 6-foot-8, is arguably the greatest NCAA player in history, the only five-time first-team All-American for Wisconsin who won an NCAA Championship and went on to play in the Italian League and, currently, on the USA National Team competing at the Paris Olympic Games. Dana was FANTASTIC in this podcast – endearing, genuine, well-spoken, humble, confident, all of the kind words apply. You will absolutely love this episode, in which we chat about: How far NCAA Volleyball has come since she entered Wisconsin in 2017 Why dance as a kid was so formative to her athletic abilities The blue-collar work ethic that has had her enjoying success every step of the way Why she loves the Italian League so much, and why she also couldn't turn down an offer to go compete in Turkey next season Midwest volleyball culture And so, so much more. Love this one, you will too. SHOOTS! *** Get 20 PERCENT off all Wilson products with our code, SANDCAST63. https://www.wilson.com/en-us/volleyball Want to get better at beach volleyball? Our Great Coach on this episode is Al Scates. Al is a former American volleyball player and volleyball coach. As a player, he was selected as a collegiate All American, and also represented the USA National Team. He transitioned into coaching in 1964, and went on to be the head coach of UCLA for 48 years. He went on to become the winningest volleyball coach in the history of the NCAA, securing 19 NCAA titles, which ties him for the most NCAA titles won by a coach in a single sport.Al was selected as the NCAA coach of the year in 1984, 1987 and 1993. His teams hold ten NCAA records, including most consecutive victories (48), most consecutive home wins (83) and most consecutive tournament wins (14). He was inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1993.At 84 Al is still sharp and insightful, and with a positive an optimistic view of the world. In our interview some of the highlights for me wereThe training method he used that encouraged players to move up and down across capability groups that were separated by a blue curtain. And how this encouraged work ethic and produced an egalitarian approach to selection. The quotes he reads from the book by John Wooden that he influenced him so greatly as a young coach. In particular the four law of learning and the stories he tells about the winning teams he had across each of 5 consecutive decades. This was a wonderful conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at thegreatcoachespodcast@gmail.com or contact us through our website thegreatcoachespodcast.com Hosted on Acast. SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter
Out of System Volleyball is one of the fastest-rising, most viral digital media brands in the volleyball space. Joe Worsley and Gage Worsley charged onto the volleyball media scene in style, winning the 2020 Waupaca Boatride two weeks after launching Out of System – and just hours after learning how autofocus worked on their cameras. Since, they've exploded, adding all-world setter Micah Ma'a to the team. When it is the Worsleys and Ma'a together, they have yet to drop a single set in grass volleyball. Not one set! Meanwhile, their YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram pages are all taking off, as is their merchandise, which sells out in minutes. It's been a while since we caught up with the Out of System boys, and we chatted about all sorts of stuff on SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter, including: How they have built the Out of System brand into the sensation that it has become How hilarious it is when people learn that Joe and Gage are actually very good at volleyball, and not just some clowns goofing off with butt digs and social media stunts Why they've decided not to compete for spots on the USA National Team, choosing instead to build Out of System Why the best grass team in the country – if not the world – is not allowed to play the Pottstown Rumble. The story is amazing. And so, so, so much more, in this laugh out loud episode. ENJOY! *** Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter have a NEW BOOK! Coach Paul Assaiante is the winningest coach in college sports history. For 30 years until announcing his retirement at the end of this season, Coach led the Trinity College squash program to 17 national championships and 20 finals appearances in the last 25 years, including at one point winning 252 straight matches and 13 straight national titles. In his final season, Trinity's squash team entered the national championships with the #6 seed and rode an almost fairy tale bookend to Coach's career to the finals and within a single point of an 18th national title. Paul also coached the USA National Team in squash for 17 years, Trinity's men's tennis squad for 24 years, and World Team Tennis with Billie Jean King in its heyday. In 2010, he authored Run to the Roar: Coaching to Overcome Fear, one of my favorite books on sports and leadership. Perhaps what is most fascinating about the soft-spoken Coach is he knew nothing about squash when he got his first coaching job. His true expertise is in managing, motivating, and inspiring a diverse group of players to be the best version of themselves. Our conversation covers Coach Paul's path and a career's worth of wisdom about preparation, emotional regulation, managing high performing individuals on a team, diversity, facing fear, learning to win and lose, and applying the lessons to the business world and next generation. Willy welcomes Mark Few. He is the Head Coach at Gonzaga University and was announced as an assistant coach for the 2022-2024 USA National Team. He served as an assistant coach for ten seasons before reaching the top position. Originally from Creswell, Oregon, Mark boasts of an extensive coaching career. He once worked as a head coach for the 2015 Pan American Men's Basketball team, an assistant coach for the gold medalist 2012 USA U18 National Team, and a court coach for the 2009 USA Men's U19 World Cup/World University Games Team Training Camp. He and his wife, Mercy, have four children, one of them currently playing and studying at Gonzaga University. The podcast begins with Mark returning to his graduate assistant days at Gonzaga University. He describes it as an enriching experience, teaching weight training, basketball, and other sports, and encouraging people to watch the sports games. He took a coaching job and brought the team to the Elite Eight. "The cool thing about it was to see a group of guys who deserved it with all their hard work," he says. He describes it as "pure fun, unadulterated hoops with no pressure." However, the stakes have gotten higher as more is expected from him after that taste of success. He retells the culture shock of having more expectations than before and questioning his situation at that moment. What helped him most was knowing everybody in the program, from compliance to academics, he was able to manage the burden. In the end, his team won the tournament. He reminisces about the moment he became head coach. "It's nice to have the humility and peace to level you out a little bit," he says. He adds that two backbones drive everything they do in Gonzaga: team chemistry and team culture. He prioritizes strong relationships with players with the right amount of fear, "demanding without being demeaning." As a coach, he aims to have his players "play with the most confident they've ever had and still play with unbridled joy." He looks back, seeing Coach Nick Saban's style, thinking he would never want to be in a position where his players are terrified of him. He wants to harness his players' strengths and create an organized model with a common goal and a plan. He talks about Kevin Pangos as someone who loved "working on chemistry instead of just talking about it." He mentions that mental coaching isn't just saying "toughen up and work hard." Working with Travis Knight led them to spend 25-30% of the athletes' time in mental development with Personal Growth Mondays (PGMs) that aided in processing pressure, expectations, lack of confidence, and handling adversities and success.

Just two years after a spinal cord injury, David Kiley made the USA National Team in basketball. During his career, DK became the only player to play wheelchair basketball in four different decades. Kiley went on to coach in three additional Paralympic Games as a part of the wheelchair basketball team and has served as NWBA Commissioner and President.

All athletic careers must come to an end, and frankly, it's quite an achievement to become so good at swimming that your accomplishments can be summed up as a “career” from which you “retire.” A high school phenom turned Stanford standout and USA National Team member, Grant Shoults' career had many highlights along with obstacles to overcome. A PAC-12 champion, Stanford record holder, and extra super senior (thanks to a medical redshirt + COVID year, he swam 6 years on The Farm), Grant recently made the difficult decision to walk away from competitive swimming as he enters medical school, but he walks away with his head held high, proud (as he should be), and he still makes time to get in and social kick. Although shoulder problems that often plague distance swimmers derailed his career at times, his retirement plan includes 3x chest days a week in the gym, so we may just see Grant back as a sprinter soon enough. Olympian Michelle Sechser is a lightweight rower. At Tokyo 2020 she finished 5th in the lightweight double sculls, an incredibly exciting race where the top 5 boats where less than a second apart. She has a long list of international and national results including a win in the lightweight double sculls at the 2021 World Rowing Final Olympic Qualification Regatta and a second in the OPEN weight double sculls at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. She's been a USA National Team rower for nine years. Michelle was born in San Luis Obispo, California and began rowing at age 14 for Capital Crew after seeing how much her older sister was enjoying the sport. She attended University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a D1 school, on a full ride scholarship. She then earned an MBA at the same school and transitioned into coaching there. Once out of school, she decided to learn how to scull, which is rowing with 2 oars, as compared to sweep rowing, which is with 1 oar because she wanted to try out for the National Team. As I mentioned, did make the National Team for 9 years, missed making the 2016 Olympic Team and struggled with injury. She and rowing partner Molly Reckford came back strong, made the Olympic Team, set a world record in their Semi-Final race there, before an excellent, tough final. Alison Tetrick is a cowgirl, a scientist, a storyteller, and a professional cyclist. Growing up on a cattle ranch in California, Alison could dream as big as the boundless landscape. Being remote from the surrounding communities, she pursued excellence in her academics, solo sports, and was ingrained with a ranch life work ethic. Beginning tennis in high school, she used that and her Valedictorian status to earn a full scholarship to Abilene Christian University in Abilene, TX. She excelled in pursuing a B.S in Biochemistry with an emphasis in Molecular Biology and became a published scientific author in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Biochemistry for her research in cholesterol biosynthesis. Alison's scientific experience took her from Texas to Boston where she worked in a laboratory specializing in chemistry research and drug discovery and then on to the Bay Area where she currently resides in Petaluma, CA. Always seeking physical challenges to accentuate her professional career in biotechnology, she began triathlon winning her first races and qualifying for the 70.3 World Championships. Meanwhile, her Grandfather had become an avid cyclist in the later years of his life winning 17 USA Master's National Championships and remarked that his granddaughter had the potential in the sport in which he could have unlocked decades earlier. Cycling was in her blood. Despite the foray into triathlon, true riding to Alison still meant saddling up her horse to ride the trails of the Central Coast of California and it took some convincing from Grampy to race bicycles exclusively. A 6-month period that consisted of a few races, a call from the USA Cycling Talent ID, and joining the USA National Team, capitulated Alison into a career that both not almost ended her life, but also saved her life. Finding the same sense of freedom on a bike that she had found with the wide-open spaces of the ranch, she uncovered what she needed to progress into one of the best elite women cyclists in the world. In 2014, she placed 3rd at the UCI World Championships in the Team Time Trial and won stages at the Tour de San Luis in Argentina and the BeNe Tour in Belgium. She represented the USA at the Pan American Games. She was ranked by the UCI, the global governing body for professional cycling, in the Top 10 professional racers in the world. This successful career came hurtling down as a sequence of crashes that involved life flight helicopters, a traumatic brain injury (TBI), broken bones, hospital stays, months of rehabilitation, and side effects from the crashes that remain to this day led her to explore alternate outlets on the bike. From the UCI World Tour, she began exploring all things gravel. She won her first gravel race at DK200, setting the current course record, and continued to become 3x Gravel Worlds Champion. In due course, Alison was crowned by event coordinators and the gravel community as the inaugural “Queen of Gravel”. The TBI resulting from the crashes as a professional cyclist awakened her academic pursuits in the desire to understand the healing process of the brain. While continuing to race professionally and work as a consultant in biotechnology communications, she acquired her M.S. in Clinical Psychology. Alison is dedicated to investing in the sport of cycling and serves on the Board of Directors of USA Cycling. You can find her all over the world enjoying life, riding bikes and inspiring. She maintains a career as a communications professional, specializing in biotechnology and the endurance sports industry. She was a pivotal part in the activation of the Amgen Tour of California, with her science, marketing, and cycling expertise. She is also the co-founder and CEO of Saga Ventures, LLC, a consulting firm based on curating meaningful community engagement and brand activation. Be bold. Do work. Ride bikes.
