Gathered outside the Lake Lure Inn, Cityserve hosted small businesses that have been hard-pressed without the regular fall tourism season. The event also featured bus tours through Chimney Rock, which remains closed to the outside public. Join the Carolina Weather Group as we bring Christmas to the people of western North Carolina. Hear from some of those hardest hit by the storm and how the holiday spirit has managed to find its way into the North Carolina mountains. Several speakers at Tuesday's Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education meeting said the district's request for an additional $63 million to help raise teacher pay won't be enough to cover basic living expenses.  The public had its first opportunity to weigh in on the proposed $1.9 billion budget Tuesday night. SWAT officers raid 'skill arcades' linked to alleged gambling

SWAT officers appeared to be raiding a number of gambling establishments in the Charlotte area on Wednesday.  Officers swarmed one location on Albemarle Road near Independence Boulevard around 1 p.m. with undercover and CMPD units. Two other locations, along Independence Boulevard in Matthews, and on Bessemer City Road in Gastonia, were all locations of a heavy police presence Wednesday. It's unclear how many agencies are part of the operation that spans multiple jurisdictions. WCNC Charlotte has contacted Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, as well as North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) to learn more about the operation."A lot of rigmarole goes on over there," Michelle Touchberry, who was in the area when police arrived, said. "You smell weed, they don't keep the place clean. They walk through the parking lot and they just throw trash. You find needles all over here and stuff like that. Gaston County lithium mine closer to reality despite public pushback

Piedmont Lithium is one step closer to making its mining operation in Gaston County a reality. The company announced Monday that the state approved its mining permit two and a half years after it applied. People in Cherryville have been pushing against the proposed lithium mine for the last few years. Prosecutors say man charged with killing mom, 2 young children has lengthy criminal history

The man charged with killing a Charlotte mother and her two young children before getting caught in California last month will remain in jail without bond due to being a "tremendous danger" to the city, a judge ruled on Monday.  (Warning: Story contains graphic details or images)  Benjamin Joseph Taylor is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Markayla Johnson and her two children, 4-year-old Miracle Johnson and 7-month-old Messiah Johnson. Across much of the United States on Monday, a solar eclipse will cause a spectacle and spark scientific insight.A four-minute period of complete darkness will occur along the path of totality from Texas to Ohio and into New England. An estimated 31.6 million people live in the path of totality this year, according to NASA. That compares to 12 million people in 2017, when the path of totality came directly through the Carolinas.In 2024, places like Charlotte, North Carolina, which saw near-totality in 2017, will only reach a peak of 80% totality around 3:11 p.m. Monday. Chester teen's family reacts after he was shot and killed

A Chester County teen's family is still in disbelief after he was shot and killed Tuesday night.  Chester Police said its officers responded to a shooting near Spring Street and Gadsden Street a little before midnight on Tuesday night. When they arrived, they found a teen performing CPR on Donovan Browning. The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Chester police arrested 18-year-old Connie Di'rose Miller in connection with Browning's death. Miller is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. His family spoke with WCNC Charlotte. One person was hurt while evacuating a plane at Charlotte Douglas International Airport late Wednesday night, according to Medic.Frontier Airlines Flight 1759 from Charlotte to Orlando was in the boarding process when a "strong odor was detected" on the plane. A crash south of Rock Hill Friday evening has now claimed four lives, two of them young children. One child died on the way to the hospital. Landlords in South Carolina have filed a staggering 400,000 evictions between March 2020 and February 2024. That's all according to newly released data from the Civil Court Data Initiative, a government website collecting nationwide eviction data.In York County alone, there were 600 eviction filings in February 2024 and just over 20,000 since March 2020, according to the eviction tracker.The ACLU and the NAACP took legal action in 2022, suing the state to collect newly published court records. More kids are becoming addicted to nicotine, with school districts like Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools reporting 758 documented incidents of use of a vaping device last school year. Man arrested after missing mother, 2 children found dead in Charlotte apartment | Monday, March 18

A Charlotte woman and her two young children were found more than a week after they were reported missing, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Police charged Benjamin Joseph Taylor, 35, with 3 counts of murder and one count of concealment of death.Taylor was found on Saturday and arrested in Imperial County, California. The City of Gastonia is having a third-party study done that analyzes barriers to housing and gives in-depth recommendations on how to remove them.  The goal is to implement city policies that create more affordable options and address disparities in housing. However, the same study was done five years ago and according to the research, the city hasn't addressed some of the identified disparities from 2019. Gastonia City Council's Housing Committee received an update Monday on the federally required housing study that's done every five years. North Carolina will become the latest state to legalize mobile sports betting, starting at noon on Monday. South Carolinians may soon be able to openly carry a weapon.It comes as both state House and Senate lawmakers officially pass the Second Amendment Preservation Act, also known as South Carolina Constitutional Carry.
