On to this week’s guest!! She is not a real estate investor yet but she really wants to be but please don’t hate on her or my this podcast as she has many dynamo investors as best friends such as guests of this show Ian Szabo and Dion Beg, and maybe one day guest Brian Scrone who is a what I call, a centurian investor have owned over 100 investment properties in Florida. Why I brought Shauna on this show is because she is one of the most fascinating people I’ve ever met. It is my belief that life is all about experiences and Shauna at whatever her age she is has 10X the life experiences of most. One week she’s having lunch and planning a women’s conference with the Dutchess of York, the next week she flies to California for a meeting and charity concert with Maclemore, then it’s off to India for another major event planning session. Shauna has hosted Gary V in front of 3,000 in Toronto, she’s hosting Sir Richard Branson in the next 12 months and expanding her events to Californation. But even more crazy is Shauna is going to 10X as she plans my event to host Grant Cardone :) Funny enough, we investors all hustle and grind so we may one day travel more. Shauna’s Haste and Hustle is so one day she may afford a down payment on an investment property and here is her story. Today we're joined by author, and baller real estate investor Brian Scrone, to talk about his new book “What Matters Most – Finding Your Focus with the 5F's” This was an interesting episode…I had a thought that it would go one way, and it went completely another way. After making a boatload of money in […]
Brian Scrone is a real estate mogul. His company Jax Investments has done over $100 million in deals. In 2008, Brian went from riches to rags. Being a multi-millionaire prior to the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis, Brian struggled to put food on the table after the market bottomed out. This led Brian to rebuild his business and LIFE more successfully than before, and write What Matters Most - which hit #1 in the self-help & motivation category on Amazon. Brain is also the founder of Family Board Meetings, a company which strengthens the relationships parents have with their children by organizing family meetings on surf boards. I brought Brian onto the podcast because I wanted him to share his story of bottoming out in 2008 and what changed afterwards. I wanted him to talk about his book "What Matters Most" and how his priorities shifted through what he learned going through the 2008 market crash. We get into this and much, much more during the podcast. The Walkaway - Congruence and Priorities are Critical to Being the "You" Imagine If there is one word that I will remember from my conversation with Brian it will be congruence. Congruence is critical because the life we believe we're living does not always align with the actual life we're actually living. This is where we need to reflect if we're living congruently. For example, Brain talked about when he worked with a high powered entrepreneur who identified himself as a "family man" yet he was working 14 hours a day and on the verge of divorce. How is it possible to identify yourself as a family man when you're not at home with your family? This is an example of misaligned priorities and we're all vulnerable to fall to this trap. So often we believe we're acting one way and yet we show up completely different in the world. This is why the 5Fs are so important to Brian - Fitness, Family, Friends, Finance and Faith. We talk about how Brian schedules these into his day and what actions he takes to ensure he's living the 5Fs. It's these actions that allow Brain to live congruently with himself and ensure he's living in alignment with his true priorities. During the podcast we talk at great length about the importance of these and why they are critical to his newfound success. He also paints a picture of what his life was like without them and it's not one he is proud of. We talk about Brain's turnaround and the importance the 5Fs played in it. Aside from being a razor-sharp entrepreneur, Brian Scrone is a certified yoga instructor in Siddha Yoga, which is rooted in meditation and most importantly, selfless service. Brian has integrated his knowledge and passion of his yoga and meditation practice as well as the importance of selfless service into the core principles of Board Meetings International. www.boardmeetings.com Brian has always focused on living a healthy and whole life, and he made the conscious decision to build his life and successful business around holistic principles, not the other way around. From the moment you meet Brian, you immediately feel his kind, caring nature and it quickly becomes apparent that he is committed to enriching as many lives as possible using experiential education and the key success principles that are shared throughout all Board Meetings International retreats. In addition to revamping the education system, Brian still plans to travel the world (so far he’s traveled to South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand), volunteer extensively (yes, he’s worked with crocodiles in a bush conservation project in Botswana and shrimping villages in Thailand after the Tsunami) and of course chase as many waves as possible! Brian is an entrepreneur from New Jersey that now resides in Florida. His owns a real estate business with his partner Jim whom you may have heard on a previous episode. They also run a unique parent/child retreat called the Family Board Meetings. Brian and his wife Coco have 2 beautiful boys aged 5 & 3. They do not homeschool, but currently have them in a local Montessori program that fits well with their educational beliefs of critical thinking, nurture and letting the child lead. Brian is a fantastic interview because he and his family practice strong values, and live a life that reflects life long learning and connection. His practices outline the first step in home education and learning for a parent- learning to parent ourselves first and setting the example for our children. Brian loves to surf. He believes in giving back and service to others but “what matters most is the relationship with ourselves.” Brian’s book What Matters Most – The 5 F’s focuses on life’s key relationships that are essential to living a great, creative life. Faith Fitness Family Friends Finance Taking the relationship deeper Brian talks more about the need for the connection that everyone, especially every child wants and how parents can create that; Getting into the rhythm of quality time by first giving the quantity. This is how he has developed his intimate relationships with his family, and he goes into detail on how to create this for our own relationships with what he calls the personal Family Board Meetings. The personal family board meetings structure falls into one on one time, every 90 days at a minimum of 4 hours. No electronics. Interaction. Keep it simple. End the time with focused reflection. Mindfulness in our everyday. How can parents be more conscience about listening more to our children and practicing trying to respond and not react? Brian is a believer in the regular practice of meditation and mindfulness. He started the practice with his kids at age 2 and encourages the importance of starting with ourselves first. Both Brian and his wife have their own daily practice, including Brian’s 20 year yoga practice. His wife Coco teaches meditation as well. He explains how meditation is the link to connected parenting. “When we start parenting ourselves first, then we will lead better by example”. Brian goes into detail about the Family Board Meetings Retreat that they hold in Florida and the mountains of Utah. The main focus is the one on one parent/child relationship. They use the outdoors and hands on experiential, reflective time. There are not a lot of programs available in the world that brings parent and child together in this environment which allows for open conversation and connection. What makes the difference in this journey is sharing this experience together with your child. My guest today is Jim Sheils. Together with his best friend, Brian Scrone, Jim co-founded Jax Investments, a multi-million dollar business venture. Currently Jim and Brian have completed many real estate deals and now teach their techniques at events all over the world. Jim credits their incredible success to two key things: starting out slow, and most importantly, finding the right “been-there, done-that” mentor. The mentors that really made the difference for Jim and Brian were investors from Australia who loved to surf and invited them to join their “board meetings”. These meetings, held during surfing trips, brought in an element of fun to the stereotypical boring meetings and inspired Jim and Brian to found The Board Meeting Strategy for entrepreneurs and their families.
