http://www.JudoIsLife.net - In this hard-hitting video, we dive deep into the ongoing debate between Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) and the Ecological Approach in martial arts, especially in combat sports like Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). While the Ecological Approach has gained massive popularity for its real-world readiness and adaptability, many coaches and practitioners are fooled by randomness, mistaking chaotic "play" for genuine proficiency. The truth is, the Ecological Approach should always be treated as a secondary phase, only applied after mastering foundational skills through Direct Instruction. Skipping this critical step leads to athletes who lack technical precision and crumble under pressure. We also explore how BJJ's ground-based nature allows athletes to "play their way" into a perceived level of skill, giving a false sense of competence. Unlike sports that demand high kinesthetic awareness and technical precision from the start, BJJ can make practitioners feel proficient without truly mastering the fundamentals.

While many people encounter nonviolence as forms of protest and resistance, the constructive side of it, the part that aims to re-establish a sense of self-knowing and trust in one's community that has been harmed through violence can be overlooked. But it is this kind of work that uplifts a community's sense of self through a reclaiming of inner power (what we call at the Metta Center, Person Power) that offers a strong foundation for other forms of action. Constructive work on the human image is not a distraction from action, it's a necessity. As part of a constructive effort to challenge and offer redress for the ongoing harms of identity suppression through language erasure within indigenous communities around the world, Bay Area educator and somatic coach Margarita Acosta's Tierra Indigena Montessori is a shining light. Their work “facilitates reparations to Indigenous Peoples by supporting them in establishing educational spaces that maintain, strengthen, and revitalize their ancestral languages and cultures through the Montessori Method.”She makes the case that language revitalization ought to be a front-and-center topic for our collective concern, no matter which language we speak and know ourselves through. All languages enrich our understanding of our world, and concepts embedded within our various linguistic homes can help us resolve personal and global crises and challenges. Losing language is a loss of our collective potential, and its revitalization becomes an expression of our creative and collective power as well as of reparations and healing.

Today we are speaking to the beautiful Catherine Haigh - children's author and women's worker. Catherine and I go into a whole range of topics, but just as a content warning: we do talk about women's health; our cycles and periods, how they can impact us, and how we can work with that cycle. We know that might not be for everyone, so just a heads up! We also talk about loads of other things, including the importance of art and the positive benefits it can have on the children in your care. Catherine's website: https://lillypilliesfdc.weebly.com/ About Catherine: Hi, I'm Catherine! My passion is health and wellbeing, working with children and women in particular. I started working with children when I left school, volunteering. I then became a nanny in London and in Florida. This is where I discovered the Montessori Method, which aligned with me in so many ways so I studied for my diploma to work with children from birth to age 6. Upon returning to England after several years I wanted to make changes in the early years in schools so I qualified to become a primary school teacher. After having my own children, we decided to emigrate to Australia to give them an outdoors lifestyle. Getting into the school system was tricky so I started back in a Montessori Kindy and works in Early Childhood Centre's as a kindergarten teacher. I was burned out and felt that I could make a difference to provide quality care and be more connected so I set up my own FDC business. Over the 7 years, I found I was trying to please everyone with the long hours, days and in general being holistic to all families. This is where I learned that if I please everyone, I'm not really pleasing anyone so I started to search a little deeper into what I needed. This is when my journey of self-care started. As time progressed, the more books I read and self-development courses I invested in, the more I got clear on my values and who I am as a person. This led me to providing clear and healthy boundaries with parents and improving my communication skills. The interesting thing was, that the more I was congruent with my values, needs and beliefs, the more like-minded people came along. I wrote, illustrated and self-published my first children's book, The Powerful Peacock in 2019 about self-love and connectedness. This evolved into art classes with a circle time for wellbeing, addressing children's feelings. After the Covid lockdown in 2020, art became popular and people wanted connection so I created some art classes for women. These became popular quick and evolved into day retreat style workshops. The more I connected with women, in circle the more I realized how we don't make time for self-care and creativity, that's what I am changing. My art then took me to women's retreats, leaving do's and birthdays, then more collaborations with women's events. By the end of last year my diary was pretty full. Last year, I jumped all in to do my NLP and Timeline Therapy on a 9 day retreat with other women. This was like the icing on the cake - all negative emotions based on past events and life-long behavioural patterns were removed, it felt like I had dumped 55 years of baggage and stories I had been telling myself. My thoughts and words are more positive and I'm currently creating a one to one day for women to help them set up self-care schedules, get to the root cause of their limiting beliefs and remove them so that they can reclaim their self-belief, stop people pleasing and not feel guilty about putting their oxygen mask on first and foremost. Because when we do, we are more productive and can function without running on cortisol (which leads to stress, which leads to illnesses). I also believe that children - and others around us - pick up on our energy and its important to keep it clear at all times.

During my many years as a childcare educator, I've always tried to encourage the infants I've worked with to develop their own imagination and create their own fun and activities. Over the years, this has become increasingly challenging. There is so much competing for our kids' attention spans today isn't there! Whether it's advertising or television or the internet or social media, the list goes on and on and on.It has been my observation that with so much content on offer, many infants and parents are losing the ability to stimulate and build their own imagination. This is hardly surprising when smartphones are so accessible and easily available to infants at an early age. During my years as a child care educator. I've always been fascinated by the Montessori approach and how it differs from mainstream childcare. In this episode, I'm exploring the world of Montessori, since I feel it has so much to offer your little one, whether they be an infant, toddler or older child. You'll hear me talk about:-The Montessori Method and philosophy and why I think it's great for infant development.Montessori toys and ideas that are designed to promote natural learning and independence. How Montessori can encourage your infant to be more environmentally conscious and aware, andAND much more.So go ahead, my dear mum. We've talked A LOT about Maria Montessori and the Montessori Method. But we haven't talked about the queen herself. Who was Maria Montessori and why do we, 70 years after her death, try so hard to keep the heart of her work strong and relevant today? Today we are going to do an overview and timeline of Maria Montessori's life and her work. There is a lot about her life that we won't be able to cover today, because we can't even begin to cover the amount of accomplishments and impacts her life had in an hour episode. It just isn't possible. We've taken and summarized a timeline provided by AMI, Association Montessori Internationale, which was founded by Maria Montessori herself. The purpose of this episode is to bring this method into context. We talk so often about things that are and are not Montessori, or what she said or wrote in books and lectures. But to understand the Montessori Method at its core, we have to understand its origin and the woman who knocked down so many doors to bring it to us. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Montessori Moms in the Wild

In this episode, we introduce the Montessori philosophy and preparing yourself as a parent. This is to be done BEFORE we bring the Montessori Method into our homes. Maria Montessori explained this preparation must be threefold: physical, intellectual, and spiritual. She emphasized that before we attempt to buy those wooden toys we see on Pinterest, before we head to Ikea to buy tiny kitchen objects to replicate the one we saw on Instagram, we must first look inward and do some deep self-preparation. As educators and now as mothers, we are constantly working to dismantle this systematic conditioning that children are to be taught, to be molded by us, and to approach our children with reverence. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
