On this edition of Political Breakfast, Republican strategist Brian Robinson and Democratic strategist Tharon Johnson join Morning Edition, live, to talk about Governor Brian Kemp's decision not to run for U.S. Senate. The speculation suddenly ended Monday, when the second-term Georgia Governor took to social media, writing: "Being on the ballot next year is not the right decision for me and my family." So then, who is the right person to take on incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, who IS running for re-election? Both Brian and Tharon share their theories with host Lisa Rayam. On Episode 105 of The Journey Is The Reward, Prepare for liftoff! Your intrepid co-pilots, Brian and Micah, chart a course from the tarmac of Burbank to the stratosphere of Seattle. The mission of Brian? To attend the Seattle Aviation and Aerospace Bash, orchestrated by the stellar Isaac Alexander! But before achieving orbit, our flight crew tackles a query beamed in by Listener Lu. She wondered about a passenger who was confused about why airlines don't fly in a straight line. Brian and Micah address some decidedly off-course information about the flight, transmitted by none other than Elon Musk. Both Brian and Micah feel he should stick to navigating his own launch vehicles!Next, Brian asks a question to the listeners: Should purchase a confirmed First-Class ticket on Spirit Airlines, or take a calculated risk on a United flight, hoping for an upgrade to First? For the main stage of our journey, Micah and Brian recount the epic trek to Burbank airport – a long walk from a new parking lot without shuttle busses! Then they detail the ascent to Seattle, with a strategic refueling stop in Sacramento. Once again, the flight crews of Southwest provided top-notch service.Upon landing at the Seattle Bash, Brian engaged in some interviews. In one daring encounter, he gently confronted organizer Isaac Alexander about a slight deviation from the promised mission parameters – a BBQ promised, but Mediterranean seafood deployed!Despite this minor anomaly, Isaac's event was a great evening for Pacific Northwest Aviation and Space aficionados. Featuring captivating speakers, a treasure trove of aviation SWAG at the freebie table, and a lucky draw where every participant was a winner, it was a truly stellar evening. The show opens and closes with the breathtaking sounds of the Madalitso Youth Choir! Their vibrant Welcome and Goodbye songs were recorded live at the majestic Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia.Want to experience their magic in person? Join us on an unforgettable group trip to Zambia, Botswana and South Africa in late September 2025! Contact Brian at Brian@TheJourneyIsTheReward.ORG for all the details.

Yes we did simply mash up the respective titles of BZ and Jonathan's Advent books, lol! Some things just go together, like Batman and Robin, peanut butter and jelly, Laurel and Hardy--as much as they both love Advent, how could it be too soon for another collab?! In a conversation that will absolutely get you in the Advent spirit, Brian and Jonathan explore Advent themes of hope, waiting, and the significance of the church calendar. They talk about how the harsh realities of the little town of Bethlehem shape the contours of the story, then and now, and why we need more Mary in our lives. They emphasize the non-prescriptive nature of Advent as a time to wait for God to act, not for us to "act right"/do more. They also talk about the tension between longing as Advent is a time to fully acknowledge the ways the world is not yet made right, and yet also how it is a time to make space for joy. Oh and course, they also talk about Nick Cave and Bob Dylan. Both Brian's book The Anticipated Christ and Jonathan's The Book of Waiting, are available now!

A Radio Owlsnest Halloween Special - The Making Of “Ghostbusters” With Martin Page and Brian Fairweather. I had only been in LA for two weeks with my “Q.Feel” songwriting partner, Brian Fairweather, when we unexpectedly found ourselves in a valley studio with Ray Parker, Jr., recording the iconic smash, “Ghostbusters”! We'd gone to Ray's studio to say hello and present ourselves as songwriters when - out of the blue - we suddenly found ourselves playing on a track he'd just-that-minute written for a movie … Brian on electric guitar and me on a cheap Synthesizer. What was this strange thing we were contributing musical parts to - what the hell did “Ghostbusters” mean? We hadn't planned for this at all … Ray went to lunch and said, “you guys just do your thing; I'll be back later”. So, for two hours, we laid down overdubs on this strange creature of a song. Ray came back from lunch, loved what we had played, and a few weeks later the song was number one in the American charts and the movie Ghostbusters was becoming an instant classic. Both Brian and I didn't know what had hit us … or quite what had just happened; it was a whirlwind of the strangest, but most wondrous kind. So, to honor Halloween, Brian and I got together to record this Radio Owlsnest podcast special, “The Making of Ghostbusters”. We attempted to remember the details of that odd day when we went innocently along to introduce ourselves to the great Ray Parker, Jr. as young songwriters, and ended up somehow being musicians and improvising on one of the most renowned and loved hits of our time. It's a crazy, bizarre story, but that's perfect for Halloween, isn't it? Enjoy! Martin and Brian.

But when you speak with them now, it's clear why the Mentor 2.0 program is such an asset. And they have the added distinction of being selected as 2023's Mentor 2.0 Match of the Year, to boot. Both Brian and Alfredo share an enduring love of the sport of soccer, which was the beginning of their bond. And now, their friendship has grown to include career advice, travel, and an eye to this young man's bright future as he enters his senior year at Tenor High School.

Episode 153: Thompson Twins - Quick Step & Side Kick (1983) Part 2 After a break to release an "emergency episode" about the new Depeche Mode single, "Ghosts Again," Brian and Sarah are ready to resume their album discussion of Quick Step & Side Kick, a.k.a. Side Kicks, the 1983 release by the Thompson Twins. Our hosts are continuing down Side One of the US track listing, and in this episode they find there are two singles to discuss, although one of them wasn't released in the US. They also find an album track that they both feel should have been released as a single all over the world! A recurring theme in this album discussion is "Thompson Twins songs that sound like other songs," and two of the three songs in this episode fall in that category. Both Brian and Sarah are somewhat puzzled by a couple of the claims, but they do agree on one song that definitely sounds similar to the Thompson Twins. Since there are two singles, that means there are also two videos. One of them left a particularly strong impression on Brian and his friends in the 80s, resulting in a rather silly claim occasionally made by both Brian and Sarah even to this day. The other video raised a lot of questions for Sarah and made Brian feel a little queasy at one point. And although Sarah had very little personal history to share about this album in the previous episode, she does reveal some personal history about one of the songs in this episode. In this episode you'll not only hear reviews, chart history and thoughts on the songs, but you'll also hear confusion about modern art, questions about musical instruments, and even talk of flowering plants! At a recent Peterson Ventures event, Taylor Jones sat down with Brian Pugh, Senior Vice President of Engineering at Lucid Software, and Loren Larsen, CEO and founder at Videra Health to discuss early stage product development. Both Brian and Loren have scaled product teams from just a handful of developers, all the way to managing hundreds of engineers. In our conversation, we discuss the process of building an early-stage product vs one built for scale, establishing a strong engineering culture, how to attract and retain top technical talent, and how as managers both Brian and Loren adapted as teams scaled. This week's guests Brian and Troy used to be members and leaders in Pentecostal megachurches in Australia. Troy, a 21-year-old member of the Assemblies of God (AOG), the precursor to the Hillsong church was drawn in by Revival Centres International, Now known as the Revival Centres Church. Troy was on the path to becoming a minister before “years of questions, inconsistencies and manipulation” overwhelmed him and caused an emotional breakdown leading to him abandon his faith. Brian became involved with the Christian City Churches denomination, today known as C3 Church Global, which you can hear about from our previous guest Emily, before being recruited by the Assemblies of God. He described his time as exhibiting “cultish type behaviour” Brian and Troy's Podcast "I Was A Teenage Fundamentalist" takes an honest & irreverent look at one of the world's fastest-growing religious movements and has been causing a stir among its church leaders. Brian and Troy provide Rachel with some background on the history of the Australian Pentecostal movement and explain their respective reasons for becoming involved. They examine the controlling techniques these churches have employed to amass huge followings throughout the world. Rachel helps Brian and Troy unpack the emotional toll followers endure under the controlling hierarchy of the church's leadership and the existential anxiety that is the result of its unhealthy ideology. Both Brian and Troy describe their breaking points with Christianity and offer advice to those leaving high control groups. Before You Go: Rachel reiterates the point Brian made about pre-planning for support when leaving a high control group. She explains the appeal of absolutes and the lure of leaving behind existential angst for a group's perfect formula for happiness. This week, Billy and Brian talk to Kari Schwear. Kari is an executive coach, "gray area" drinking expert, speaker, and author who helps high performers move out of the gray areas in their lives so they can establish healthy boundaries that transforms them from “fine” to fabulous. Kari is also a co-author of the #1 bestselling book The Successful Mind: Tools for Living a Purposeful, Productive, and Happy Life. Kari has been featured on PBS, CBS, ABC and multiple podcasts and radio shows. She founded GrayTonic and the Question the Drink for 30 program after her own experience as a former gray area drinker left her frustrated and confused with traditional programs.Kari is here today to talk to us about the "gray areas" we have in our lives, and what we can do about them.We ask Kari:--Tell us more about what you mean by “living in the gray” and how it can have an effect on people.--Both Brian and I have had issues with alcohol in the past that we've discussed on the show, as have you. Tell us about how you “stepped out of the gray”.--For the people out there yelling, “But I only have a glass (or two) a night…what's so wrong with that!” What do you say?--When does “living in the gray” cross into something more serious like addiction?--You do a consultation and a deep dive assessment. What do those look like? What seems to be a recurring theme in these conversations that maybe our listeners could reflect on as they listen to this?--How much of a role does peer pressure play in all this? Once someone has decided to give sober living a chance, what's something they can say to help their friends understand that they're just not drinking anymore?--Tell us more about Question the Drink and the work you're doing with that. Brian interviews entrepreneurial couple Chantel Valentene and Brian Mackin. Chantel made a name for herself building brands in the fashion industry and is now the managing director of a socially conscious design studio, while Brian founded an artist residency and a creative agency. Now, they've joined forces to launch Start Today OmniMedia. On the podcast, Chantel and Brian discuss how building their business has created choice and freedom in their lives. They also share how they use their family values to pick the right opportunities and clients. Episode Highlights The definition of mission-driven can be broad. For Brian, a mission-driven business is one where you commit to actualizing a vision without profit being the central motivator. He likes that definition because it's a little broader, allowing entrepreneurs to define their mission beyond just social or environmental justice causes. “It's really important to allow people to define what mission driven means for them individually,” he said. Chantel agreed with that definition, cautioning that some businesses may abuse the idea of being socially responsible without following through. She also said it can be helpful to think of a mission-driven business as a values-driven one -- something that she and Brian aspire to do with their own company. “As a family-run business, the mission that we have is maybe more internal,” she said. “Does this business serve who we are as a family? Does it serve our intentions? Does it serve our values in our life as we're looking to move forward?” Not solely focusing on profit can give you freedom. Both Brian and Chantel describe some of their early entrepreneurial efforts as self-serving. But as their careers have grown, they've found passion and purpose in using their jobs to also make an impact. As a result, they have naturally evolved towards running mission-driven businesses that serve them and the greater good. “The purpose drives what the company is doing and what I'm doing,” Chantel said. “The profit is there to serve us, not for us to be enveloped in making money for no reason.” Brian expanded on that idea, saying that focusing on a mission has provided him and Chantel the freedom to bring to life the vision and ideas of other business owners they believe in. “If everything that we were focusing on was the bottom line, it would have been much harder to migrate and evolve into those spaces,” he said. You don't always have to know the destination. Brian and Chantel didn't intentionally set out to start Start Today OmniMedia. But when the pandemic hit, they saw an opportunity to use their complementary talents to meet interesting people and do interesting things. “It was a level of self awareness that we both have and open mindedness to what's in front of you,” Brian said. Chantel agreed, adding, “You don't always have to know the end of where you're going.” That mindset ultimately led to the creation of the Start Today podcast, which in turn led to the joint business venture. It also contributed to the podcast's tagline: The best things in life are on the other side of fear. “I think it's obvious that we took that to heart,” Brian said. “How do we not live this? Because this opportunity is right in front of us, and we don't know when it's going to turn out to be.” Resources + Links Start Today OmniMedia Farewell.NYC Firebelly Connect with Chantel Valentene: Twitter, Instagram Connect with Brian Mackin: Instagram Brian Thompson's Twitter: https://twitter.com/BrianFinancial About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. This was truly an honor to be able to talk to the founders of Amy's Kitchen , a company born (1987) in our backyards and possibly the largest employer in Sonoma County. Both Brian and I are huge fans of the pioneers in the organic and vegetarian frozen foods market, and we stayed on our best behavior. Waving my Amy's vegetable lasagna box, as a symbol of my loyalty, we talked about everything from how they met, how they started, how they have grown to a $500 million company and what their daughter Amy thinks about the company being named after her. It was extremely interesting (but not surprising) to learn about their commitment to their company's culture and how they have had many offers to sell but are determined to keep the company private. Believing in business rituals, it was fun to hear how they have kept some of their practices exactly the same as they did when they started including continuing to taste every new item developed on the very same table that they started with. We jam packed this show with so much information and could have gone on for hours. Their story is truly fascinating. You can find them just about everywhere in the freezer section of your grocery store. Their newest part of the business, their drive thru can be found in Rohnert Park, Corte Madera and the SF Airport. Ryan Danger Moran welcomes you to The One Percent! Today's episode is very special, and features the much anticipated interview with none other than Gary Vaynerchuk — the other half, along with Brian Lee, of who Ryan wants to be when he grows up. Don't miss this one for some rare insight into Gary's bubbling strategic mind, how he only ever plans for the long game, a surprisingly sharp lightning round, and the way this conversation has updated Ryan's mindset about ho to best approach the next decade. Key takeaways [:39] Despite still reeling from the depth of the experience interviewing Gary Vee, Ryan introduces today's episode and shares a bit about how this discussion altered the way he will plan for the future. [7:30] Gary often says “You have to learn to love your losses” and being a staunch Indians fan offered Ryan a singular opportunity to finally understand what that means. This leads Gary and Ryan to nerd out on sports. [11:30] What is this incredible Rosé? Ethical Wine, Gary's 40$ wine for 20$. [12:58] Ryan shares a vulnerable moment in his life when he began to question weather the actions he was taking were truly reflective of the man he wanted to be and if those goals even still made sense. [14:58] Gary gives insight into his own moments of doubt, highlights that these mind shifts are required for growth and a vision for the future — and he thinks Ryan is cooler than him. [17:08] Adversity is foundational to success and Gary was raised in a way that fostered huge amounts of self-esteem and zero entitlement. His mother never fostered delusion, an enormous pitfall parents seem to fall into nowadays — which scares him : he explains how delusion creates entitlement. [20:02] Hustle porn and overworking yourself is absolutely delusional and contrary to what some people seem to think, Gary is not about that… He's about finding happiness, being self-aware and dominating life. [21:00] Successful people are special in a very straightforward way: they obsess over the work but it's because they love it and are happy doing it. If you work at something you don't love, somebody else will love it, they will work harder and have an advantage. [22:00] Ryan tries his hand at explaining Gary's strategy: his audience and the free content he puts out give him connections, leverage and exposure. [23:49] Gary interjects with a very important nuance: hustlers are killing him in the short term, but in the long term the play is always building Vaynermedia to sell the brands he has and will have in the future. Give to your audience without expecting any returns — be grateful if there are any at all — and ask people you have no idea who you are to buy your product. The person who can build a framework that doesn't look to monetize their audience, wins. [27:14] Braingasm: You want to be happy? Give without expectation. You want to be unhappy? Think you're getting something for your actions. You want to be really unhappy? Do shit for the sake of something else happening. Which is what everybody does. [27:43] Ryan has a humbling moment as he realises that he believed there may be something off about his own strategy when in fact he had been hanging on to expectations — when he so often gets recognised by people in the streets who say his content has helped them build 7 or 8 figure businesses. [30:00] Braigasm: Gary Vee may or may not be an influencer on his brands, it doesn't matter at all… Do Vaynermedia clients signing million dollar cheques give a shit how many followers he has on instagram? [32:47] Ryan touches on something that really struck him in one of his previous interactions with Gary, his lack of ego. Gary explains that even though he may seem like he IS ego, his actions in the last 20 years attest to the fact that he is predicated on humility. [37:30] Gary often says he is doing for everybody what his mother did for him — but today, on this interview, he has a realisation and for the first time ever, voices the way his father shaped him and that influence is helping him shape the world. [41:29] 10 years ago Ryan decided to follow Gary. Today, he feels ready, whispers away from where Gary was 10 years ago. So he asks Gary to poke some holes in his strategy. [43:00] If you keep giving to entrepreneurs in a way that addresses their short term wants and needs and helps them achieve 7-8 figures, you will give yourself disproportionate leverage to own a significant percentage of their business. And don't make your audience the source of your livelihood. [44:40] Because time is short, Ryan invites Gary into a lightning round of trend predictions: 1. 2020 election: Gary thinks Donald Trump is likely to be elected but Joe Biden could beat him, and America could be looking at a 4 party system in 50 to 100 years. We didn't pay the piper in 2008 and the gift keeps on giving. 2. Marriage: Gary believes the shadows of our society, infidelity, prostitution, strip clubs have been massively important to the maintenance of marriage and he is curious to see what will happen. [51:20] How will Ryan change as a result of this, and Brian Lee's meetings, the two people who represent what Ryan aims to be. 1. People who get really big and really respected are ones who do great things. Both Brian and Gary are good business owners and operators, and Ryan has missed running businesses... 2. The long game is the only game, and in order to grow, things have to be built outside of yourself or else you are always the bottleneck. Ryan thanks listeners and invites them to send him their comments on Twitter @Ryanmoran and Instagram @RyanDanielMoran.
