During the past several years, researchers at NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley have developed new instruments that can look below the ocean surface in more detail than ever before. Using techniques originally developed to look at stars, these "fluid-lensing" cameras use complex calculations to undo the optical distortions created by the water over coral reefs. Thanks to Caitlin Elliott for sharing this with us. https://bit.ly/RNNnewsPeter110 Tip of the Week Jeremy- Track your testing results, we have talked about this and there are tons of ways to do it! In fact, if the pH level falls out of range, the fish and invertebrate occupants of the tank can become challenged, slowing their growth, and even compromising their immune system. "COME HOME AMERICA" (video/stillshot) is songwriter Loose Bruce Kerr's latest original song, recorded one vocal and instrument at a time by Bruce in his garage studio in northern California. It talks of the present state of the U.S. with its divisions, needing all of us to come together, Democrats, Republicans, independents, of any stripe, type, or individuality. Bruce uses multitracking to provide all his desired instruments & vocals, a process invented by Bruce's hometown influence, Les Paul, Waukesha, Wisconsin. In this recording, Bruce layered a 16 voice chorus plus lead vocal over orchestration of guitar, multiple bass viols, cellos, violins, french horns, flute, oboe, snare, timpani, & cymbals. The orchestral instruments were done by Bruce on keyboard midi'd into a Yamaha rack synth. His main instrument is a decades-old Wechter (Made in USA...Michigan) acoustic guitar, double-cutaway. Bruce interrupted his law career for a 20-year run as a songwriter, performer, and parodist mainly on the Dr. Demento Show (over 100 plays) and Jim Bohannon Show, plus tv and news programs use of his topical parodies (e.g., "O.J.-oh," "Gorby," "You Picked a Fine Time to Lead us, Dan Quayle," "The Leader of Iraq," "Scudbusters!"). Back in the day, Bruce opened for "Weird Al" Yankovic. Bruce eventually became Assistant General Counsel of Sun Microsystems in northern California's Silicon Valley and today works for Oracle. ©2020 Marjorie Music Co. Join us as we welcome a well know guest back to our show, "Joyce T Strand."  Joyce will be here to chat about her new book titled, "The Reporter's Story." Which is now available for pre-order at many online retailers.   About Joyce: Joyce T. Strand is the author of who-done-it contemporary and historical mysteries set in California. All of her published six novels are inspired by actual events and/or real people, although they are definitely fictionalized. Strand headed corporate communications at several biotech and high-tech companies in California's Silicon Valley for more than 25 years. Unlike her protagonist Jillian Hillcrest, however, she did not encounter murder in her career. Strand lives with her two cats and collection of cow statuary in Southern California, and enjoys exploring and writing about the growing wine region in the Ramona Valley near San Diego.   About "The Reporter's Story: Emma Matheson is a reporter who is a bit naive.  She picks up on this suspicious burglary that has a lot more questions than answers. 1912 was the year and for many who wasn't wealthy it would seem suspicious to not claim your values. Especially values worth 8000 thousand dollars.  This very thing is what piques Emma's interest immediately.  Emma dives in and finds that while investigating what was said to be burglary isn't what it seems. Could this be the story that will make Emma Matheson a world famous reporter?  This mystery will keep your eyes glued to the page for sure.   Tune in as we welcome back author, "Joyce T Strand."   Stay tuned and keep it locked.

"IN-A-GA-DA-DA-VIDA POLKA," a combination parody by "Loose Bruce" Kerr, as featured on the Dr. Demento and Jim Bohannon syndicated radio shows, combines Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca" with the 1968 drum solo hit song by Iron Butterfly, "IN-A-GA-DA-DA-VI-DA" and an added accordian unfortunately turns it into a nightmarish polka. In this fantasy parody, as the 60's start to come back in the form of flared jeans, black lights, lava lamps, etc., the added accordian somehow kidnaps the 60's rock sound and morphs it into a polka. Oh, the humanity. Ah, you can never go home again. Bruce laid down the instruments and vocals, one at a time, then brought in a female accordian player who was the local accordian society's president who'd not only never heard "IN-A-GA-DA-DA-VI-DA," she had somehow evaded hearing Ricky Martin's constant anthem, the beach song of a recent summer. Lawrence Welk may have been her last influence. This picture is Bruce in 1968 when he was in a rock band at the U. of Michigan-Ann Arbor, the Byzantine Empire, who opened for the Iron Butterfly in Chicago in 1968 as their psychedelic era hit was hitting the top of the charts. Sit back, crank up this double-parody, and take comfort that the story of this song will never truly exist to hurt us. Trust me. Rock does not have a polka phase ahead. If it were to, all boomers would pick a night to commit mass mutual suicide together. Holding hands and swaying while Judy Collins sings Joni Mitchell's, "Both Sides Now."
