If you know me then you know I'm OBSESSED WITH The Vampire Diaries and the spin-off show The Originals. Today's guest actually got to work on both shows! She used to write the VD recap's after every episode and was a writer & producer on The Originals. Carina Mackenzie is a TV writer, producer, and show runner. She is most known for writing for The Flash & The Originals as well as is the creator of the CW show, Roswell New Mexico. Carina is such a powerhouse and her writing journey is absolutely incredible. She shares about all the ups and downs of being the industry - as it is quite difficult to “make it” as a TV writer. She also does give some great advice and tips on how to succeed and network and really encourages young writers to utilize their social media presence to connect with others in the industry. She notes that there is a lot of work to be done in terms of diversity and inclusiveness in the industry, but there are conversations slowly happening! Carina is super transparent about her journey in this episode and I really appreciated her honesty. We also end the ep with some fun rapid-fire questions! Hope you enjoy! The Space Cowboys podcast is hosted by Liz Prugh and Meg Bonney. The two discuss and recap the latest ‘Roswell, New Mexico’ episode, theories and more. This episode of our Space Cowboys podcast brings you an exclusive interview for our Fierce Females series. We had the pleasure of chatting with the founders of ATX Festival, Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson before the live screening of The CW Network’s new show, Roswell, New Mexico, in Austin, TX, at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. ATX Television Festival is a four-day event that celebrates the television medium: looking back at its history, where it is now, and where it's headed. The festival consists of panels, screenings, and events where attendees and leaders in the TV industry talk, watch, and experience television together as one community (ATX). The festival is more than a weekend of panels with fans and celebs geeking out, it’s a television experience. It’s one of those festivals that following a panel of one of your favorite TV series, you can grab a drink with the show’s stars and creators after. It’s for TV fans, writers, directors, producers, and those that want to immerse themselves more in the industry. Overall, it’s TV Camp that doesn’t judge you for your love of binging the small screen. Tune in as Meg and I chat with Caitlin and Emily about: -Why TV is the most community-driven medium, and how social media has helped elevate those communities -Their thoughts on how the industry scales the demand for content while maintaining value and quality -How mediums like Facebook Watch, YouTube TV, Netflix, and disruptors alike are changing the game -Favorite female-led projects -Which TV series they are most upset was cancelled -BONUS: Roswell, New Mexico showrunner Carina MacKenzie crashes the podcast to say hi! -And more! Cheers to amazing women doing amazing things. Want more podcast fun? Tune into ATX Festival’s podcast, TV Campfire.
The Space Cowboys podcast is hosted by Liz Prugh and Meg Bonney. The two discuss and recap the latest ‘Roswell, New Mexico’ episode, theories and more. What goes into creating a TV show? Does a showrunner’s personal life trickle into the feels you get every Tuesday night? Why is your favorite character’s drama so relatable, so real? These are the questions we sought answers to from Roswell, New Mexico boss, Carina MacKenzie. Your favorite alien-podcast hosts flew down to Austin, TX on the heels of SXSW for an exclusive Roswell, New Mexico screening, hosted by ATX Television Festival and Warner Bros. Before the screening and fireside chat with Carina, Meg and I met with her in her hotel room for an intimate conversation about the personal pain, love, and ultimate “light” that created this already-beloved series. More in this podcast: -Carina's insight into how Liz looks at Isobel: Is there forgiveness or redemption in the future? -Why she loves Michael Trevino's character, Kyle Valenti, so much: "I think we should allow people to change, apologize for what they’ve done, move forward, and not always carry the burden of mistakes they've made in the past." -The theme of "space". This doesn't just pertain to the obvious. Carina shares why giving space to those we care about is just as much an act of love as shouting your devotion from the rooftops. -Malex, Malex, Malex. Did we mention, Malex? "These guys are working towards something better than themselves and this old town that has this ugly history of intolerance and abuse. Stepping into the light is the story that we’re telling [for Alex and Michael]." -Why music plays such an important role on the show. -Advice for women, creators and fans alike: Why you should never, ever apologize for occupying your space. Own your own light! Head to purefandom.com and @Pure_Fandom on Twitter for more coverage.

It was perfect. Not only is this what Carina MacKenize had to say about her journey with the CW hit The Originals, it is also what we Sipping Sisters have to say about this episode where we discuss feminism and being a woman in the writers' room! The conversation is full of gems, like how Dear White People inspired The Originals writing team, sincere exploration of what it means to be a "strong woman" and spirited talk about where we find those examples of strong women characters on our screen. We sipped, we shared, we swooned. We hope you'll follow in suit! While at ATX TV Festival in Austin over the weekend, Tamar sat down with Carina MacKenzie, writer on The CW's The Originals to record a special episode of The Shipping Room. We chat about the most recent episode of The Originals and take a look at toxic ships on television in general (especially those teacher/student ones!). We also wade ever-so-slightly into polticis and share some highlights from the festival!
This week we welcome Carina Mackenzie, executive story editor on The CW's The Originals, to chat about the toxic nature of shipping on the Internet. We look at the beauty of fandom and all the good that's come from having an online community to feel our feelings with -- and then discuss the dark side that's come along with it. We'd love to hear you weigh in! Be sure to find us on twitter or send us an email at shippingroompod@gmail.com.
