Send us a textWhat if soap operas could be a window into the complexities of human relationships and societal norms? Join me on Soap Lore as I explore the world of Knott's Landing's second season, uncovering how this iconic show distinguishes itself amidst the drama of its peers. From a heartfelt dedication to Jamie Kennedy's influence on my storytelling perspective to the subtle brilliance of Knott's Landing's narrative style, we journey through the nostalgia and admiration these classic primetime soaps evoke. Discover the real-life drama that unfolded between Linda Evans and Bo Derek, and how it added depth to Evans' portrayal of Krystal Carrington in Dynasty. With an eye for the nuanced techniques that define and elevate classic soaps like Dallas and Dynasty, we dissect how these shows address intricate issues without slipping into melodrama. This episode promises a fascinating exploration of the characters and story arcs that kept audiences captivated, and how these timeless tales resonate with each passing generation. As we unravel the tangled web of relationships within Knott's Landing, each character's journey sheds light on societal expectations and personal responsibilities. Let's celebrate the stories that entertain and inspire, and remember to keep the drama on the screen.

Promoted as ABC's answer to NBC's Bonanza, the TV western series, headlined by Hollywood legend Barbara Stanwyck, launched the careers of Lee Majors and Linda Evans, who went to star in The Six Million Dollar Man and Dynasty, respectively.
Actor and filmmaker John Derek may not have been the gifted auteur he imagined himself to be, but his luck with the ladies was undeniable. His four marriages were all to starlets, and his roving eye eventually led to an ugly split from a young Linda Evans, later of Dynasty fame, for an even younger - in fact, a minor at the time - Bo Derek. Nathan and Eppy head back to the first season to meet another of Jim's old flames in S1E17 Claire. After a rough breakup and years of separation, Claire calls Jim for help. Of course he agrees to do what he can, but she isn't being straight with him and he needs to figure out who's life is in danger and why before it's too late. Co-starring Linda Evans and Jackie Cooper, this episode hits a lot of our "classic" themes, though maybe lacking a little something to make it stand out from similar plots. This episode, we find ourselves reading and discussing the second anthology. This one is entitled Worlds of Honor. It was published in 1999 and contains five stories. Aptly named, these stories are as much tied to Honor's worlds, as to the characters we read about. Through the pens of several authors, we travel to Sphynx, Manticore, Gryphon, and Sylvestria.First comes the story The Stray, written by Linda Evans. Linda brings us to Sphynx for the second bonding between a human and treecat: that between Dr. Scott MacDallan and Fisher, just 15 months after Stephanie Harrington is adopted by her treecat. The story focuses on a stray treecat named True Stalker who, near death, finds Scott and Fisher. He leads them to the crash site of an aircar, located near a facility owned by BioNeering. There are essentially two storylines here. First, we gain additional insights into what humans and treecats experience as a bonded pair. We also glimpse into the treecats' moral code as Scott and Fisher learn through True Stalker that the aircar crash wasn't an accident. It was a murder to cover up what's occurring in the related storyline. In the second storyline, related to this case something has gone wrong at the BioNeering research site with the devastating result of killing off a significant section of Picket Wood trees. As we already know, this species of tree is a clonal organism (much like the Aspen tree on Earth). It is also a primary environment for treecat colonies. The murder of the aircar crew was an attempt to hide the significant damage that had been done to the forest. What wasn't known or anticipated by BioNeering: one of the crew aboard the shuttle was paired to the treecat True Stalker — the same cat that found and brought Scott and Fisher to the crash site. Ultimately, the crime is revealed. As a side note, we learn of Manpower Unlimited., a company which provides cloned and bio-engineered human slaves to corporate colonies looking for labor they wouldn't have to pay to work in dangerous environments. This is a company that will play a large role in future stories. All three of us gave this story a “thumbs-up”, with Raul sneaking a second “thumbs-up” in for good measure. The second story was written by David Weber: What Price Dreams? We are introduced to Princess Adrienne and her father King Roger II. We see an estranged relationship which was the result of the assassination of Adrienne's mother, Queen Solange. The damaged relationship between Roger and Adrienne is further fueled by the Princess' fascination with treecats. When she makes a trip to Sphynx two important things happen: she's adopted by the treecat Seeker of Dreams; and next, she's target of an attempted assassination. The attempt is ultimately foiled by Seeker of Dreams and his clan. Of note, these events occur not long after the first adoptions of Stephanie Harrington and Scott MacDallan. As a result, not much is known about treecats, adoptions are still very few, and as a result, opinions run strong. With Adrienne's salvation coming through the hands of treecats, King Roger has a change of heart regarding treecats in general, and the rights of these sentient creatures. One nugget of information we gain from this story is of a technique called a “psych adjustment,” with all its unresolved moral baggage. We get just enough information about it to see what happens when psych adjustments are used for malicious purposes where an adjusted individual is effectively programmed and used to attempt the assassination of Adrienne. Another nugget is more background on Manpower and Mesa and especially their attempts to get hold of treecats for “research” purposes.Your hosts all rated this one with a “thumbs-up” as well.Queen's Gambit was the third story in the anthology. It was penned by the expert hand of Jane Lindskold. Here we move...

After our jaunt over to the first anthology in the Worlds of Honor set, we're back to the main series and discussing book 8: Echoes of Honor. This seemed like two books that were woven together through the way this novel was assembled. At 718 pages, this is the largest novel yet in the series, and was published by Baen Books in September 1998—a year after In Enemy Hands. The events in this book occur just short of a year (approximately 10 months) after Honor and her colleagues destroy the Tepes and head to the surface of Hell; not as prisoners, but as downed pilots surviving behind enemy lines. Some might think Behind Enemy Lines might have made a good title for this book. While it could have, the title David Weber selected has a much more significant relationship to the overarching storyline. To everyone outside of Honor's immediate party, Honor is understandably believed dead. Her public “execution” by the People's Republic of Haven was broadcast for all to see — a deep faked piece of well-done propaganda. Because of this, the echoes of the impact Honor had on the RMN; on Grayson, its Space Navy, and the people of her steading; and specifically on her parents are heard and/or felt. At the start of this story, only we, the readers, know she is still very much alive and relatively well. The novel was put together in a way that the two-pronged story presented itself through the length of the novel as alternating chapters, or technically “books”. Books 2, 4 and 6 were the events associated with Haven's Operation Icarus, as they strike the Star Kingdom at key locations during a Manticoran operational pause. Honor's parents and their stay on Grayson are also significant parts of these books. Books 1, 3 and 5 revolved around Honor's exploits on Hades. She and her people create what is essentially an insurgent movement and take over the prison planet's command center at Camp Charon. Securing a sufficient number of transports, she liberates all who want to depart from Hades. At the end of the book, these two storylines merge when Honor appears at Trevor's Star with her crew and half a million prisoners. The story ends, leaving us to wait and see just how all those who thought they lost Honor will react to the news of her survival. Exciting stuff! We rated Echoes of Honor with three 5s (out of 5), for an overall rating of 5 from your hosts. We extend our thanks and appreciation in the podcast for those of you who have liked and/or commented on our episodes so far, and we'd like to extend our thanks here as well. Your comments are genuinely appreciated and warmly received. Remember, we're fans of the series just like you and we're honored to have a venue to share our experiences and thoughts as we work our way through the Honorverse with other, like-minded people. Linda Evans is a strength-based career coach, speaker, and writer who specializes in personal branding. She earned a BA in American Studies and a minor in Ballroom Dance from Brigham Young University and an MA in Psychology Counseling from Columbia University. Linda resides in San Antonio, Texas. She started her virtual career coaching business, Launched by Linda, in 2011 and has worked in higher education for ten years in five universities. She is a Gallup certified Strength Coach and has certificates in Positive Psychology and Public Speaking. Linda started her career trajectory by volunteering and having part-time jobs mentoring other students in college. She then went on to pursue a master's program in counseling, which she dropped out of after two semesters. Linda then worked as an administrative executive assistant while earning her master's degree. Afterward, she got a full-time job as a career counselor at Columbia University and then tried academic advising but ultimately went back to career services. Along the way, Linda also had a side hustle where she started editing resumes of friends and family and then built it up to offering services such as personal branding, changing careers, practice for interviews, LinkedIn branding, and cover letters. Linda has also started doing podcast interviews, public speaking, webinars, panels, and writing articles for an international business online magazine. Linda's current goal is to take a break from her full-time career to look after her baby girl and eventually go back to get her PhD and become a professor. This conversation involved two people discussing the value of career coaches and how they can help people coming out of college. The speaker noted how college doesn't always teach students real world skills like how to navigate the corporate world, ask for promotions, or create a resume. They both agreed that having people like the other speaker, who has the experience and the perspective, is an amazing addition to college courses. The speaker mentioned that even though she has taken on the full time job of being a stay at home mom, she still plans to continue her side-hustle and grow professionally online and with clients. She also talked about how she is naturally a good listener and that she knew she wanted to be a career coach. In this conversation, the speaker talks about how to craft a successful personal mission statement. The speaker recommends doing a self-inventory of interests, strengths, personality traits, values, and goals in order to come up with a list of words that describe oneself. These words can then be used to create a one-sentence mission statement which should be short enough to be memorized. The mission statement should be something that is both aspirational and reflective of who one is currently, and feedback from people who know the individual well should be sought to ensure the mission statement matches who they are. Lastly, the mission statement should be a source of motivation and inspiration and be able to bring out joy and energy when needed. The conversation discussed the importance of writing a mission statement that goes beyond just one's job. It should be something that applies to all parts of life, such as whether one is employed, unemployed, volunteering, or retired. This mission statement can be very helpful in decision-making and gives a person a sense of direction in life. The conversation also touched on the difference between job, occupation, career, and calling. A job is a specific place with a specific job title, while an occupation is the category of jobs, such as nursing. A career is an extended amount of time, including education, experience, awards, and skills. A calling is how a person views what they are doing and is often related to religion. An example was given of three workers laying bricks on a religious temple and how each of them viewed the work differently.Connect...
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Linda Evans, Multi-Award Winning Actress & Star of “Dynasty” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Linda Evans, is a beloved, multi-award winning actress, author and public speaker who's been dazzling the world with her talent, warmth, grace, spirituality – and yes, her legendary beauty - since she first came into our homes on TV as Barbara Stanwyck's daughter “Audra Barkley” in “The Big Valley”. She's also appeared in a number of classic movies including “The Klansman” with Richard Burton, “Avalanche Express” with Lee Marvin, and “Tom Horn” with Steve McQueen. And yes, that was HER playing “Sugar Kane” in “Beach Blanket Bingo”. She also made 2 “Gambler” movies with Kenny Rogers, and she co-starred in the highly acclaimed TV mini-series “North and South Book 2: Love and War”. But there can be no doubt that our guest has been forever immortalized for her unforgettable portrayal of the glamorous and highly likeable “Krystal Karrington” on the blockbuster TV series, “Dynasty”, for which she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a TV Drama Series, and was nominated 4 more times for Golden Globe Awards, as well as receiving an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She also won 5 People's Choice Awards as Favorite Actress in a Drama Series. In 1987, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And in 1991, she delighted her loyal fans by resuming her role as “Krystle Karrington” in the TV miniseries, “Dynasty: The Reunion”. In 2006, she reunited with her castmates for the TV special, “Dynasty: Catfights and Caviar”. In 2006, she and Joan Collins starred in a fabulous play called “Legends”, which I got to see in Toronto, at the beginning of their 9-month sold-out tour. And then, in 2009, the whole world was rooting for her in the British cooking competition reality show, “Hell's Kitchen”, which she won. And most recently, she can be seen in “Swan Song”, co-starring Jennifer Coolidge. In 2015, she released an entertaining, poignant, spiritually uplifting and delicious memoir entitled, “Recipes for Life: My Memories”. I've described the book as “delicious” because it includes some of our guest's favourite recipes. And let me tell you: if you're a foodie like me, her famous artichoke dip, her crab and lobster cakes with mustard beurre blanc, her baked ham, her potatoes with cheese and garlic, and her lemon soufflé with raspberry sauce are EASILY worth TEN TIMES the price of the book. Face Dances is the ninth studio album from the Who, and the first release after the death of drummer Keith Moon three years earlier. During those three years the Who would release the film Quadrophenia and the concert retrospective film The Kids Are Alright. Front man Roger Daltry would try out acting, and Pete Townshend would release his second solo studio album. When the group got back together for Face Dances, Phil Collins expressed an interest in joining the band. However, Kenny Jones (Small Faces, Faces) had already been asked to join. John “Rabbit” Bundrick also contributed keyboard work on this album, and would eventually join as a full time member of the Who. These joined previous members Daltry, Townshend, and bassist John Entwistle. The album was highly anticipated, and was a commercial success, reaching number 4 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and number 2 on the UK Albums chart. Critical reviews were mixed at the time, and the band has expressed some friction with producer Bill Szymczyk who conducted the final mixing without the full band's input. Regardless, the album is a staple of early 80's rock and many of the songs have achieved a timelessness about them.Brian brings us this album for today's podcast. You Better You BetThe first single and lead-off track to the album was a staple of the new cable station - MTV. It was the Who's last top 20 single, reaching number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. Townshend developed the song during a period of clubbing with the daughter of a friend. The video was a black and white studio session. Don't Let Go the CoatThis deeper cut was the second single, and was inspired by Townshend's guru Meher Baba and his statement that his followers “hang fast to the hem of my robe,” meaning to stay true to his teachings. It also may have been inspired by Townshend's parents who would pick him up after his binges on drugs and alcohol. The Quiet OneBassist John Entwistle takes an unusual turn as lead singer on this self-referential deep cut. It was the B-side of the single “You Better You Bet.” Entwisle said it was a song trying to explain that he wasn't really quiet, but that he started being quiet and got stuck in the pigeon hole of that label.Another Tricky Day“This is no social crisis, just another tricky day for you...fella!” John Bundrick inspired this song, and it claims that what we're going through is nothing unique, but is just another tricky day. The song is the final track on the album, and the video is in the same style as the first single - a black and white studio session. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Dynasty” John Forsythe, Linda Evans, and Joan Collins starred in this prime time soap opera. STAFF PICKS:Skateaway by Dire Straits Bruce brings us a song about a girl who skates around the city, ticking off the drivers, weaving in and out of traffic, and listening to the local rock and roll station on her headphones. This is the lead single from the Dire Straits album Making Movies, and the album title is pulled from the lyrics of this song.Precious to Me by Phil SeymourDrummer, singer-songwriter, and guitarist Phil Seymour wrote this song with a throwback doo-wop feel. This is the first single from his first solo album. It hit number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. Seymour also contributed backing vocals to Tom Petty's “American Girl” and “Breakdown.”He Can't Love You by the Michael Staley Band Wayne features a one hit wonder featuring saxophonist and E. Street Band member Clarence Clemons. It made it to number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the 40th song played on MTV. The Michael Stanley Band is big regionally in Ohio.I Love a Rainy Night by Eddie RabbitBrian's staff pick is a crossover country hit. It hit the top of both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country charts. It describes the feeling that comes from a good rain at night. Rabbit started writing the song in the 60's, but didn't develop it until this album. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Toccata by SkyThis prog rock group covers the classical piece "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" by J.S. Bach made it on the British singles charts.

Evans' first guest-starring role was on a 1960 episode of Bachelor Father. The series starred John Forsythe, with whom she would costar 20 years later on Dynasty.[5] After several guest roles in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet between 1960 and 1962, and guest appearances on television series such as The Lieutenant and Wagon Train, Evans gained her first regular role in 1965 in The Big Valley. Playing Audra Barkley, daughter of Victoria Barkley (played by Barbara Stanwyck. On December 31, 1967, John Derek, Linda's husband at the time, recruited her to operate one of his cameras after he had been commissioned by daredevil Evel Knievel to film his motorcycle jump of the fountains at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Evans captured the iconic images of Knievel's devastating crash as the jump failed.Evans was next cast as Krystle Carrington in Aaron Spelling's opulent new primetime soap opera, Dynasty, which premiered in January 1981.Intended as ABC's answer to the hit CBS series Dallas. Dynasty featured Evans as the former secretary and new wife of millionaire oil tycoon Blake Carrington, portrayed by her former costar John Forsythe. Although initially sluggish in the ratings, audience figures improved after the show was revamped and British actress Joan Collins was brought in to play opposite Evans and Forsythe as Blake's scheming ex-wife, Alexis Carrington. By the 1984–85 season, Dynasty was the number one show on American television, outranking Dallas.Evans won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Drama Series for her Dynasty role in 1981, and was subsequently nominated every year from 1982 to 1985. She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1983.[16] Evans won a People's Choice Award for Favorite Female Performer in a New TV Program in 1982,[17] and for Favorite Female TV Performer in 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1986. She won a Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in 1984 and 1985.Here's my interview on KRAK with the lovely Linda Evans.

Here are my favorite sides for Thanksgiving and how to make them ahead of time so that you can spend your time with family (not in the kitchen). Hello friends!!! This post is for those of you who have asked for easy, make-ahead sides for Thanksgiving. So, here are our family favorites. You can listen to the podcast for a "talk through" of the recipes. You can also link directly to the recipes below. With less than two weeks until Thanksgiving, you can buy groceries now and start making ahead now!!! My grandmother's cornbread dressing is the BEST. Make it to the point of baking (but don't bake). Freeze for up to a month or refrigerate up to 3 days ahead of time. Bake in the oven an hour or two before guests arrive. Keep warm until serving. If you want to see a video of me making this dressing, see below. Ruth's Chris famous sweet potato casserole is a hit. Make it a day ahead up to the point of baking (do not bake). Bake an hour or two before guests arrive. Keep warm until serving. The best cranberry sauce in the world really is, in my opinion, the best cranberry sauce for turkey (also pork tenderloin). You can make this several week before placing it on your Thanksgiving table. Store in a bell jar or airtight container in the fridge. Gourmet Gruyere Cheese Grits can be made up to 3 days ahead. Make to the point of baking (but don't bake). Place in the refrigerator, covered, until the day of cooking. Cook in the oven (45 minutes) an hour before guests arrive. Keep warm before serving. Mississippi green beans are a must-have on our Thanksgiving table. Drain all cans of green beans except for 2-3. Place the beans in a Ziploc bag with the marinade up to 3 days ahead. On the morning of the meal, heat them through (oven or slow cooker). Keep warm until serving. Baked mushroom rice (aka church lady rice) is delicious. Measure the rice in the baking dish the night before. Complete the recipe the next morning, baking rice in the oven for 45 minutes. Keep the rice warm before serving. Linda Evans corn pudding. If you want a fabulous corn pudding, this one if my favorite. Make it ahead to the point of baking (but don't bake). Refrigerate overnight, and bake the next morning. .If you want what tastes like old fashioned creamed corn, I share that in the podcast (there is no recipe on my website). I share how to use McKenzie's frozen white Silver Queen Corn (sold in tubes at most grocery stores, to make the best creamed corn ever. I do hope one or more of these fabulous sides makes its way to YOUR table this year. As always, thanks so much for stopping by. Wishing you a joyful, blessed, and savvy day!!!
