In this special episode, Jen and Amy get a visit from a Hollywood darling we've loved in countless films and shows like The Descendants, Archer, 27 Dresses, Arrested Development and 13 Going on 30 to talk about her newest project based on the beloved children's book, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! Actress Judy Greer talks about what it's like to collaborate on such a treasured holiday story that she somehow missed out on as a kid but was lucky enough to discover when she was cast for the role. She sets the scene for what it was like to film the movie last fall in wintry Winnipeg with a cast full of kids on set and also takes a moment to share some highlights from earlier in her career. Also in this episode: Amy and Jen talk about their mixed feelings toward pageants and public performances. As you might guess, one of them loves them, one hates them. In our GenXcellence segment, Jen and Amy recount their first movie-without-parents experiences. And we Rant or Rave about decorating the house at Christmastime. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: “I directed so many programs with my sisters and my girl cousins, and my parents were very, very mediocre audience members. If you're going to have four kids, guess what you get to do? You're going to sit on the brown corduroy couch and watch our shitty programs. That's part of the deal. We practiced for six hours. I had choreography. At one point, I gave Lindsay an umbrella that she had to open at just the right lyric in the song and the bitch could not do it and it was so upsetting.” – Jen Hatmaker “I think what's so beautiful about this story is that it's about unity, and compassion, and empathy. And it's about being welcoming.” – Judy Greer Resources Mentioned in This Episode: 48 Hours movie (1982) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083511/ Film Rating Guide - https://www.motionpictures.org/film-ratings/ Top Gun movie (1986) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092099/ The Shining movie (1980) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081505/ Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - https://drafthouse.com/austin 37th Street Austin Light Display - https://www.instagram.com/37thstreetlights/ Arrested Development - https://www.netflix.com/title/70140358 13 Going on 30 movie (2004) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337563/ The Descendants movie (2011) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1033575/ I Don't Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star by Judy Greer - https://amzn.to/4hiDC0y The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: A Christmas Holiday Book for Kids by Barbara Robinson - https://amzn.to/3YzrNfh The Best Christmas Pageant Ever movie (2024) - https://bestchristmaspageantever.movie/ Archer - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1486217/ Citizen Ruth movie (1996) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115906/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 Dallas Jenkins - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0420817/?ref_=tt_ov_dr_1 Pete Holmes - https://peteholmes.com/ Guest's Links: Judy's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/missjudygreer Judy's Twitter - https://x.com/missjudygreer Judy's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/OfficialJudyGreer/ Movie Links: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/bestchristmaspageantevermovie/ The Best Christmas Pageant Ever's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/BestChristmasPageantEverMovie The Best Christmas Pageant Ever's Twitter - https://x.com/BCPEMovie Connect with Jen! Our conversation today with Andy Gail, Executive Director for Literacy Volunteers Winchester Area gave us an update on several of their adult learning programs as well as details about the wide variety of topics they cover through classes and tutoring. Andy also gave a few statistics about how many books they're sending to children in the city of Winchester, Frederick & Clarke Counties through their partnership with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. The program was developed in 1995 by Dolly for her hometown of Sevier County, Tennessee. She wanted every preschool child to have their own library of books. Learn more about it here: https://imaginationlibrary.com/ As part of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, sponsorships finance the cost of books and mailing. From the day they are born, children who are registered for the program receive a book every month until their fifth birthday. Preschoolers currently living in the City of Winchester, the County of Frederick, or the County of Clarke may enter the program at any time and begin receiving an age-appropriate book every month until their fifth birthday. Families with preschool children who move into the city are eligible to register and become part of the program. If a family has more than one preschool-age child, each child may participate and receive his/her own library. Learn more about how to register your child or become a sponsor of the program by clicking here. Andy gave us details for several events that are happening in the coming week including Alamo Winchester Film Club's Lost Weekend XVI Film Festival happening at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema from Thursday, September 28 through Sunday, October 1, 2023. During the event, Film Club will host a silent auction whose proceeds will benefit the Literacy Volunteers Winchester Area. Learn more about the event by clicking here. In the early 1990's, Tim League spent $50,000 in savings to lease an abandoned movie theater on the wrong side of the tracks—a shaky experiment that eventually grew into a thriving national chain. As Tim and his wife Karrie built theaters in Austin and beyond, they made a name for themselves by offering dinner with the movie, creative pairings (like sake with Godzilla), and roadshows where movie-goers could watch Deliverance in canoes, or Rocky on the famous steps in Philly. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema now has 40 locations across the country and a revenue of over $300 million, but there have been plenty of bruises along the way: a failed first theater, a fractious lawsuit with business partners, and a swan dive into the red during the pandemic. This episode was produced by Carla Esteves, with music by Ramtin ArabloueiEdited by Neva Grant, with research help from Carla Esteves. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The movie industry's recovery from a worldwide pandemic is far from complete. Theaters have been forced to innovate and invest back in the basics, such as picture quality, sound, seats and food and beverage. Tim League, Founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, sees the improvement of the baseline experience as the best way to ensure habitual movie-going and joins this podcast with Wim and Jim to discuss cinema and how Alamo Drafthouse makes the theater experience unique.
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema aims to offer the best dining, drinks and movies all in one place. It began with a single location in Austin, TX and now has a growing list of locations across the US. Chris Drazba, Chief Development Officer at Alamo talks about where the chain is expanding. He also explains why the film slate for 2023 gives a reason for the film exhibition business to be optimistic. James Cook is the director of retail research in the Americas for JLL. Nate Hereford originally wanted to be an archologist, but thankfully for all of us, and our appetites, he found his way into the kitchen. Nate is the founder and chef of Chicken Scratch, one of the several food options at the City Foundry and later this year he will open a second location serving up his rotisserie style chicken and more in the city of Glendale. But many might know Nate's name from his time working with the Niche Food Group and Chef Gerard Craft. As the executive chef at Niche, his background is heavy on fine dining but Nate tells me he wanted to make food that was for everyone, something more approachable. We sat down in his new restaurant space to talk about how he settled on chicken, how the shift in take out and easy pick up options has shifted the dining world and the local chefs he finds inspiration from. Chicken Scratch's Glendale location is set to open in late November with dine in, to-go and a pick up window. Speaking of things coming soon, there are several new spots at the City Foundry opening in the coming months including Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, City Winery, and Sandbox VR, a virtual reality entertainment experience.
Popular movie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will open its first New England location in Boston in early 2023. WBZ's James Rojas reports.

When Kara Swisher wrote a column declaring her love for Vin Diesel and predicting that we will not be returning to movie theaters, Tim League felt sorry for her. He's the founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, a luxury movie theater chain that opened in Austin over 20 years ago and has since expanded nationally. The pandemic has not been kind to the company, which he notes was in “dire” condition by December and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year. But League still remains bullish about his industry and the value of the theater experience. In this conversation, Swisher and League debate whether the rise of streaming giants means the end of cinemas, big and small. They also discuss the challenge of hiring and retaining workers, pushed release dates for movies like “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” and whether a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon would buy a theater chain like Alamo. Mostly, though, they agree to disagree. Movie theaters are starting to reopen, and moviegoers are starting to return. All eight of the Laemmle’s theaters are now reopened, its Glendale location the last to do so a couple weeks ago. Tickets are now on sale for the first time in a year at American Cinematheque theaters, which announced programs at all its theaters, including the Rialto in South Pasadena. Last weekend, “A Quiet Place: Part II” opened with very strong box office grosses. And one of the locations that sold a lot of tickets for the sequel was the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown Los Angeles. The Texas-based boutique chain filed for bankruptcy reorganization in early March. Unlike the Arclight and Pacfic theaters, Alamo was able to come back quickly with many of its theaters reopening in May. KPCC’s John Horn called up Tim League, Alamo’s founder and executive chairman, to talk about his circuit’s return, the future of moviegoing in a streaming era, and whether or not Alamo might be a buyer of the closed Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. With contributions from John Horn Guest: Tim League, founder and executive chairman of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema

Shannon and J.R. kick off Nerdodiversity month with an old-school nerd and an old-school nerdy topic! Joey Mills is a Southwest Missouri legend in the Nerd World and he's known around the world for his Pop Goes the Culture website and podcast. We're yakking about a nerd topic almost as old as nerddom itself. That's right, we're talking Star Wars.A long time ago on a podcast (not so) far, far away sat three nerds named Shannon, J.R., and Joey. They talked about the original trilogy, the newer stuff, the source material that may have inspired George Lucas, archetypes and the franchise in general.Unlike a movie, we fit all this great Star Wars knowledge into much less than two hours. If you've never heard the Pop Goes the Culture podcast, your ears don't know what they're missing. The really cool thing about the podcast is that Joey records it at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Springfield, MO. He sets up eight microphones, opens the door to the room and whoever shows up to talk about nerd culture is on the show. It's a nerdy free for all, a completely different show each week and honestly, a lot of fun.Besides all the fun stuff, we also delved into what makes the Star Wars franchise and the characters so great,"I think kids are sort of the ultimate litmus test for whether or not something really has archetypal characters because they will resonate with kids almost more than adults who are looking at the special effects and the quality of the acting and stuff like that. But if the storyline has characters that are really archetypal, I think that just really resonates with kids, and they just lap it up and just watch movies again and again and again when they have that aspect to them."Joey MillsCatch Pop Goes the Culture at:www.popgoestheculture.comhttps://popgoestheculture.com/pgtcpodcast/https://www.facebook.com/pgtcpodcast/https://twitter.com/pgtcpodcast

Overall, it’s TV Camp that doesn’t judge you for your love of binging the small screen. Tune in as Meg and I chat with Caitlin and Emily about: -Why TV is the most community-driven medium, and how social media has helped elevate those communities -Their thoughts on how the industry scales the demand for content while maintaining value and quality -How mediums like Facebook Watch, YouTube TV, Netflix, and disruptors alike are changing the game -Favorite female-led projects -Which TV series they are most upset was cancelled -BONUS: Roswell, New Mexico showrunner Carina MacKenzie crashes the podcast to say hi! -And more! Cheers to amazing women doing amazing things. Want more podcast fun? Tune into ATX Festival’s podcast, TV Campfire.

The Daydream Instruction Manual pulled out the dark sunglasses and black suits to make sure that the audience of the "Late Show" viewing of "Men in Black" at the Alamo Drafthouse felt that they had any potential extraterrestrial threat under control. The truth is, if they HAD seen an alien, I'm sure Billy would have had to have dragged Eddie's unconscious body out of the theater! Please enjoy DIM's afterthoughts and musings on the "Late Show" viewing of "Men in Black" at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema!
Winona Ryder is a peerless pop cultural icon. Here in NYC, the Quad cinema will be showing 16 Winona films this month as part of their “Utterly Winona” retrospective. And The Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn is having an all-day Winona movie marathon on August 25. Both special events coincide with her new film "Destination Wedding" opposite Keanu Reeves opening at the end of this month. But her upswing in popularity seems to go much deeper than that. Here to discuss why Winona’s appeal is more potent now than ever is Cristina Cacioppo, programmer at Brooklyn's Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.

On today's episode of Deep Focus, host Tom Breen and fellow WNHH hosts Allan Appel and Lucy Gellman review Hacksaw Ridge, a new World War II movie from director Mel Gibson that stars Andrew Garfield as American Army medic and battlefield conscientious objector Desmond Doss. For the second segment of the show, Breen talks with Lyric Hall film programmer Joe Fay about his time working at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Dallas-Fort Worth and about two movies that have had a strong influence on his own understanding and love of cinema: Tobe Hooper’s 1974 slasher classic THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, and Joe Dante’s family-friendly 1989 horror-comedy THE ‘BURBS.
Today on The Speakeasy, we're joined in the studio by Vanessa Brown and Vincent Favella. Vincent is one of host Sother Teague's oldest friends in the city of New York, while Vanessa Brown has the sweet job title of "director of fun" over at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (and okay, Vincent works there too). The theater chain invites viewers to order food and drink from stealthy waiters while they watch anything from the latest comedy to indie classics. That doesn't mean they tolerate any texting, but even if you get kicked out, there's always the bar.
We had the great pleasure of hosting the Late Show at The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema: Flash Gordon (35mm)!! We had some of the most fun we've had at a movie, and it just happened to be a 36 year old movie based on a comic book and serial films, hosted by one the best movie theaters we've ever been to! Flash Gordon is a cult classic among fans of comic book films and fans of anything awesome in general, and The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema does an absolutely outstanding job of presenting the film in an exciting way, engaging the audience, and creating an atmosphere of excitement around the showing of the film!! Please enjoy this episode and relive a little of the fun of Flash Gordon at The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema!

Welcome back for the third episode of Ka-Pow: The Pop Cultured Podcast! There was an awful lot of news to discuss this week, so we hit as many topics as we can while still leaving time to spotlight an excellent piece of fan fiction and take a detailed view of the first wave of new DC: Rebirth comics. And don’t worry, millennials, unlike those oppressive old-fashioned movie theaters, we don’t care if you want to text while listening to the show.Length - 1:19:17Language - PG-13. Howdy. How you doin'? That's right, it's an all-new episode of The Flickcast. On time this week. Who thought it was possible? Well, we did, that's who. And yes, we're gonna try to keep on track. We'll see how that goes. On this week's show Chris and Joe discuss all sorts of new and recurring topics, as you would expect. Some of these include the new Ant-Man movie, changes to The Flash for the second season, more about Mr. Robot (the show you should be watching) and its potential ties to Fight Club, Buffy vs. Angel, Chris Pratt's greed, the potential reboot of Xena: Warrior Princess and a whole lot more, more, more. Picks this week include Chris' pick of the amazing Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and Joe's pick of the delicious 2015 Stone Farking Wheaton Wootstout beer. As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship, or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook, Google+ or via email.

It's the Friday after Halloween, which means we're all suffering from Type-2 diabetes and we recorded a new episode of Set to Jet! Your illustrious hosts Sean Riccio (KnoxComedy, Sword of the Stars II) and Jason Zapata (TVTropes.org) sit in with comedian Sean Alec Chidester to discuss technology, awesome bands, having the same name (sorry Jason) and how to kill somebody with a pineapple. Errata: * Bands mentioned today - MC Frontalot, The Protomen and one of my new favorites Peelander-Z. Check out this music video! You can also see the record of the livestream of MC Frontalot and the Protomen here. * The movie I was reaching for was Next, based of the Philip K. Dick story "The Golden Man". The less said about it, the better. * The Wicker Man, comedy of the year. * There's a show called Misfits. You should watch it. It's like Heroes if that show had British delinquints and didn't suck. * Here's that poster of Big Trouble in Little China from the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. * Food, Inc. * "Dobby? Dobby's a fucking fruit!" * Sword of the Stars II: Lords of Winter is finally out! You can get it through Steam, Impulse and GamersGate. Buy it and hear me do weird bug voices! * Related note, friend of the show Arinn Dembo's firsts SotS novel The Deacon's Tale is out from Kthonia Press. Buy it here! * And of course on November 16th (not the the 13th! Sorry if I told you that!) I'll be at the Preservation Pub opening for Rory Scovel's Dilated Imagination tour. Get your tickets now!
On Thursday, September 3, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas Franchise Opportunity Meets with Franchise Interviews. For over 10 years, The Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas has provided a unique combination of theatre and restaurant, showing first-run and independent films while offering in-theatre food and beverage service that includes an extensive menu of freshly prepared appetizers, sandwiches, pizzas and salads as well as a wide selection of hand-crafted beers and great wines. We are the only concept in the growing cinema-eatery category that is franchising. The typical Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has four to ten screens that resemble traditional movie theatres except rows of seats alternate with bench-style tables. Individual theatre seating ranges from 75 to 320 seats. First-come, first-serve seating begins approximately 45 minutes prior to show time. Customers are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the pre-show entertainment. Instead of a barrage of advertising, a variety of short films are shown that change on a regular basis, some with tie-ins to the feature film. “We're proud of the fact that we don't show any advertising,” President and CEO John Martin said. “People don't want to pay for a movie and then be bombarded with 15 minutes of dancing candy and fountain drinks.” Once seated, customers order from the menu and the friendly wait staff brings the food to their seats. Customers can continue to order throughout the movie by writing their requests using the paper and pencils on their table and placing it on the clips attached to the table. Waiters quietly collect and deliver those orders without distracting from the movie. All tabs are closed before the film ends.
