1985 single by Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin
POPULARITY
In 1985, Phil Collins could do no wrong. His album No Jacket Required would eventually hit the top spot in the US and the UK. He'd also have the top album and top song on both sides of the Atlantic. He won a Grammy for Against All Odds (which would hit #1), his duet with Philip Bailey, Easy Lover, was a smash hit around the world and hit duet with Marilyn Martin, Separate Lives, would also go to #1. And after a world tour to support his 25 million selling album No Jacket Required, he played Live Aid in London with Sting and then jumped the Concorde to make it to the US and played RFK with Eric Clapton and a reunited Led Zeppelin. Plus he was on Miami Vice. The man was unstoppable. As No Jacket Required turns 40, we decided to analyze it track by track. Though Collins proved he could navigate the mid-80s recording styles without getting too cheesy on tracks like Sussudio and Inside Out, there are others that aren't great given the strength of the hits like Only You and I Know and I Don't Wanna Know. The album would sell over 12 million in the US alone thanks to hits like Sussudio and the video for Take Me Home not only gave him clout as a bonafide international star but also kept the album selling well into 1986. Phil has received a lot of backlash in latter days due to the fact that he was everywhere in the 80s - chart topping with every Genesis album, every solo record, every duet or movie soundtrack song, every tour, every TV appearance, every music video. Does he deserve the criticism he gets or did he just make the most of his opportunities he was given? We debate that and more on this surely to be divisive episode. Silvia Pettem has published more than 20 books. Her newest title, “SEPARATE LIVES. Uncovering the Hidden Family of Victorian Professor Mary Rippon” is the true story of a pioneer woman educator who lived and worked in the male-dominated world of 19th century academia at the University of Colorado in the then small frontier town of Boulder. Mary received wide acclaim for her teaching and is believed to be the first US woman to teach at a state university. But the Victorian social mores in 1878 forced her to lead two very separate lives. She was both a professional woman and a mother, hiding both her husband and child in Germany. Author Silvia Pettem has a knack for pulling intriguing women out of the past through her books on history, biography, missing and unidentified persons, and true crime. She lives with her husband and two cats in the mountains west of Boulder.

We're addressing a listener's question about having no feelings for her husband anymore. She still has some desire to rebuild her marriage despite feeling empty and detached. If you've ever felt similarly about your spouse, you, too, will benefit from what I share. I explain how to "reignite" the loving feelings for your spouse with three responses: feelings, forgiveness, and faith. The fact is that feelings are not final, and they are fickle. They are precious but not the priority. Instead of being led by our feelings, there are healthier and more effective ways to handle our lack of feelings toward our spouse. Listen in to learn the pathway forward. Resources Mentioned in this Episode:

While the idea of "one consciousness" living through separate lives can be profound and inspiring to some, it's important to recognize that it's also a matter of interpretation and belief, and different individuals and traditions may understand and express it in various ways. Ultimately, whether one subscribes to this perspective or not, it often encourages empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility towards others and the world at large. If you're enjoying the show, I'm sure there are others out there like you who would also enjoy the show. Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:00 We'll be off next week. Chandra thinks the gossip will pick up when The Crown and Omid Scobie's book come out. I've been watching The Fall of the House of Usher. Chandra can't do ghosts or body horror. Chandra watched the Beckham series and loved it. Royals: Minutes 6:00 to 14:00 We're getting more details about the bankruptcy of the Middleton's business, Party Pieces. We talked about that in episode 153. Someone has been putting up posters in Bucklebury where the Middletons live calling them out for stiffing creditors and suppliers. We're wondering why there aren't any photos of the posters. The man who bought Party Pieces earlier this year, James Sinclair, said it's all the investment firm's fault and everything was fine before Carol sold half her business. These excuses don't add up. William and Kate are said to be divided over whether Prince George should go to boarding school at Eton where William and Harry went. It looks like they've been separated for some time. William went to the Rugby World Cup semifinal in France with George on Saturday. Then Kate went solo to another match on Sunday. Britney Spears: Minutes 14:00 to 20:30 Britney Spears has a new memoir coming out on October 24th called The Woman in Me. We're getting advanced details and she really dished the dirt. She talked about how she's been controlled and criticized since she was a teenager, and she revealed that Justin Timberlake got her pregnant when she was 18 or 19 and convinced her to have an abortion. She said he cheated on her with another celebrity. She also admitted that she made out with another guy, a choreographer named Wade Robson, when she was with Justin. We are sure Justin cheated a lot and we remember when he cheated on Jessica Biel. In response to this story a source told Entertainment Tonight that “Justin has been focusing on his own family… and just want[s] everyone to grow and evolve instead of continuing to bring up the past.” I read a quote from Lisa from the Eat, Pray, Britney podcast. We wonder how Justin Timberlake dumped Britney over text when not many of us were texting in 2002. Did he use a Blackberry? They had just come out in 2002 and Britney and Justin broke up in March of that year. Comments of the Week: Minutes 20:30 to end Kaiser's COTW is from Ameerah M on the post about Travis Kelce's love of fashion. My COTW is from Bee on the post where Jada Pinkett Smith said that people blamed her for Will smacking Chris Rock at the Oscars. Thanks for listening bitches!

Lauren’s Journey [2:44] “I didn’t exactly know what the next thing could be but I knew I needed something else.” The Pivotal Point [13:00] “I decided to jump all-in on the main thing and really own my expertise.” Fear of Risk-Taking [14:57] “What does everyone want from me?” Lauren’s Fitness Competition [34:40] “I wanted to sharpen my mindset, focus, and discipline - that spreads to other areas of your life.” Separate Lives [38:30] “When your primary relationship feels off, that affects everything.” Post-Break Up Breakthrough [42:31] “Our subconscious is kind of prepared for this.” Choosing is not an easy thing to do. Letting go is painful and hard. It brings us out from our comfort zone. Sure, there will always be consequences or opportunity costs; yet, staying divided in your focus and attention does not optimize your resources and the A-plus results you desire to achieve. You must decide to step fully, go all-in, and take that leap. For all you know, the grass is greener where you water it. It will all be worth it in the end. You just need to trust yourself. Summary of Brenda’s June 5, 2020, channeled Creation Energies show at BlogTalkRadio.com/brenda-hoffman: You’re starting to rebuild yourself. So it is you’re discovering you know what’s right for you and, therefore, allow the same for others. In 3D, you needed to react to the moves of others. You’re now strong enough to not care. Perfect Harmony is the title of last week’s Brenda’s Blog – her weekly channeled blog for LifeTapestry Creations.com. The overview of Brenda's June 12, 2020, Creation Energies channel: This isn't a test, as was true in the 1960s. Because of you, the light now dominates. Those who wish to remain fully of 3D are a bit like earthworms. Even though worms are necessary to enhance soil, they are not part of your daily life. You and worms exist on earth but seldom interact. So it is for you and 3D beings now and forevermore. Brenda’s Creation Energies show and Brenda’s Blog contain different channeled information.

The two-time Grammy nominee Eric Clapton called “one of the great singer-songwriters” joins us to talk about everything from his 1970s classic "On and On" to writing hits like the Oscar-winning “Separate Lives” for Phil Collins, to the unexpected rootsy influences on his new album, We’ll Talk About It Later In The Car. EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul catch up after their respective travels to New York and Italy; the new 10-CD Bakersfield Sound box set Scott produced; the winner of our Lamont Dozier contest; and instructions about our listeners' final chance to enter to win a copy of Marty Stuart's new coffee table book. PART TWO - 6:49 mark Stephen Bishop comes by Songcraft World Headquarters to talk about the TV theme song that first made him pay attention to music; why his stepdad forbid him from playing guitar in the house; the days he faked a British accent to try to get ahead in the music business; how his friendship with Mama Cass's sister led to his big career break.; the time he fooled Quincy Jones by imitating a trombone with his mouth; how his best-known song was born from a single chord he couldn't stop playing; why he didn't like Barbra Streisand's version of his song; how he ended up getting his guitar smashed in Animal House; the crappy springs on Eric Clapton's guest bed; the line he refused to sing in the theme song from Tootsie; and why he says you're never gonna write a great song until you get your heart broken. ABOUT STEPHEN BISHOP Academy Award winner and two-time Grammy nominee Stephen Bishop is a guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter who began his career as a staff writer for a Los Angeles-based music publishing company. After finding success with Art Garfunkel’s recordings of his material, Stephen launched his own artist career with the album Careless, featuring the now-classic hits “Save it for a Rainy Day” and “On and On.” Bishop went on to find success with a number of self-penned hits as an artist, including “Everybody Needs Love,” “Send a Little Love My Way,” “If Love Takes You Away,” “Unfaithfully Yours,” and “Animal House,” the theme song for the National Lampoon's movie of the same name. Bishop also performed the song “It Might Be You” from the film Tootsie, which went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary Charts. Written by the team of Dave Grusin with Alan and Marilyn Bergman, the song won an Academy Award. Stephen went on to win his own Academy Award as a songwriter when he penned “Separate Lives,” which was featured in the film White Nights and became a chart-topping hit duet for Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin. Other artists who’ve covered Stephen’s songs include Eric Clapton, Kenny Loggins, David Crosby, Steve Perry, The Four Tops, Johnny Mathis, Luciano Pavarotti, Helen Reddy, Diane Schuur, Phoebe Snow, Barbra Streisand, and Beyonce. In his autobiography, Eric Clapton wrote that Stephen was “a close friend during the seventies…whom I regard as one of the great singer-songwriters.”

Crazy fun with Oscar, Grammy Nominee, Stephen Bishop. We were voyeurs in his amazing home which houses Gold and Platinum Records, the back off the guitar John Belushi smashed in Animal House––signed by the entire cast, a pic of The Beatles, signed by The Beatles; a huge painting of Hendrix, ridiculously cool stuff everywhere. Nothing cooler than Stephen, who’s written over 650 songs… say what…. he sang one of his latest, Almost Home, the theme of the new Benji Movie on Netflix, the first song he ever wrote, a song sung with his first band, The Weeds, his version of a Jagger song, the theme of Animal House, and, the song he sang in the film, plus, the Theme of Tootsie, Separate Lives, and, oh yes, On and On! Hell yeah! Plus, Blue Window, from his latest CD, Blueprint. More than a mini-concert, with stories, stories, stories… Bette, Barbra, Whitney, Clapton, good friend of both of ours, James Lee Stanley, who was the first to record a Stephen tune, Art Garfunkle, who had Stephen sing on his version of my wedding song, a great Belushi story, his manager, Robert Ellis, married to Diana Ross, who was later my boss man, his recent tour of the Philippines, which has led to an upcoming documentary, It Might be You. Links below to the trailer, to Stephen’s book, Songs in The Rough, with amazing originals of huge hit songs from amazing artists; and, to his website, where you can find the keys to his kingdom, tour info, music, and merch. Mary and I had an amazing and lovely time with Marilyn Martin. Mary and I would love to wish Marilyn a “Happy Birthday” and pray you have a wonderfully blessed day. Listening to her life and with her walk with Jesus, her stories were an inspiring delight. As Mary had said during the interview, Marilyn had the Grace of God all over her, and how she articulated her stories to us. I will say as I did in the interview, that when I was back in the 80’s I had both of her CD’s, probably just called “Marilyn Martin - Night Moves” and “This is Serious”. What made me reach out in the first place was just thinking and reminiscing about music in my past, Marilyn Martin was one of my favorite female pop/rock artists but then I saw “Trust, Love, Pray” and was like, Marilyn Martin did a Christian CD? So I emailed her and what do you know, she emailed me back. In this interview, Marilyn teaches about her nickname “Minnie”, her life with Joe Walsh, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac and her many adventures in that point in time with her musical life. How her grandma was pivotal in her Christian life. Her duet with Phil Collins on Separate Lives. We learned about her husband Greg Droman who not only played in bands with Marilyn but also recorded many artists from pop rock and Christian, in Nashville, he had an amazing studio. Learned how her husband lead her to “Apple Garageband” and “Apple Logic Pro X” with Apple Loops. Talked a little about Greg and Marilyn’s Raccoons :) I know one thing, she is well guided with those Apple Loops :)Marilyn has a warm happy personality, very down to earth and humble. It was a real honor to have met her and to have her on the “Worship Cafe”. We went over what inspired Marilyn to write this Christian CD and she has a new Christian CD called “Walk in the Light”. A lot of her Christian songs will be going on the radio station stream. The songs we went over on the show are listed below, and yes her albums are on my iPhone. 1. Amen2. The Arms of God3. Singer/songwriter Stephen Bishop scored several hit songs in the 70’s & 80’s like “Save it For a Rainy Day,” “On & On,” and “It Might Be You.” He wrote songs for many other artists, including “Separate Lives,” a #1 hit for Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin. He’s part of one of the most iconic scenes of the classic Animal House movie, where John Belushi smashes his guitar.Stephen has a brand new album called Blueprint, which features many songs that were originally cut as demos. He tells us the origins behind many of the songs, plus how he became friends with Eric Clapton, and how got involved in the Animal House movie. And, he tells us a very funny story of touring with Linda Ronstadt.
Episode 76 Leading Separate Lives One of the most devastating situations for a marriage to face, is when husband and wife live separate lives. When your attention is focused on something or someone outside the home, your marriage loses the precious energy it needs in order to thrive. Proximity, as well as intimate conversations with someone at work, divert your focus away from the one person who truly matters. In this episode, we'll talk about ways to implement more shared activities with your spouse.
A long time fan of Grammy & Oscar Nominated singer/songwriter, Stephen Bishop, we met briefly after one his concerts a couple of years ago. I commenced begging and pleading to get him in the living room for Women Who Write. He was willing to come, as long as he didn't have to sing. The only AM singing he does is at 1 AM, 3 AM, even 5 AM. Well, no problem at 8 pm... when we recorded this here. Warm, easy going, engaging, and so fun, Stephen treats us to a private concert of current, about-to-be-hits, and a medley of his monsters... On and On, the theme songs to Tootsie and Animal House, Separate Lives, and Save it For a Rainy Day. He sounds amazing. And, what great stories he tells about playing privately for Barbra, Bette, and Jack. One of my favorite shows, ever, I'll be coercing him to the living room for sures. At the age of thirteen, Stephen Bishop found himself at a crossroads. A clarinetist with hopes of becoming a History teacher, he was forever changed after watching the Beatles one night on "The Ed Sullivan Show." His brother Denny bought Stephen an electric guitar and a "Mel Bay" chordbook and turned his stereo into an amp so Stephen could play music. Stephen began to learn to play guitar and make up his own chords as well, writing his first song, "Surf's Turf.." a pathetic sounding intrumental. He formed a band called, "The Weeds" and began to play at local fraternity parties incorporating his own original songs with various songs from top 40...Stephen made a trip to Los Angeles at 17... eventually landing a publishing deal at $50 a week. After years of trying to make it, a good friend, Leah Kunkel got some of Stephen's songs to Art Garfunkel, who wound up recording two of them on his gold recording, "Breakaway." He started playing around town singing his songs in person for artists like, Barbra Streisand...Bette Midler..Diana Ross." Shortly thereafter, he was signed to ABC Records who released his first album, "Careless." He had two hits from the album.."Save It For a Rainy Day," and "On and On".. Soon the album went gold, as well as his next album, "Bish." He sang the hit theme,"It Might Be You," for the movie, "Tootsie," as well as writing and/or singing 13 other films including, "Animal House."and composing "Separate Lives," for the film "White Nights." His songs have been recorded by: Beyonce, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Barbra Streisand, Art Garfunkel, Steve Perry, Stephanie Mills, Kenny Loggins, Johnny Mathis, Phoebe Snow, David Crosby, The Four Tops, Aswad and Pavarotti. He appeared as the "Charming Guitar Player" in "Animal House," wherein John Belushi slammed his guitar to smithereens in the Toga Party scene. Stephen was nominated for two Grammys and awarded an Oscar nomination for his song, "Separate Lives," which became a No. 1 hit for Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin. In Eric Clapton's autobiography, Eric mentions Stephen as "One of the great singer songwriters." Stephen just released his 25 year Anniversary Album, "Bowling in Paris," Remastered with new artwork and the album features Sting on bass and vocals, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins and is produced by Michael Omartian and Phil Collins.Stephen has released two new albums last year.."Be Here Then," a new studio album and "Stephen Bishop LIVE," an album of his hits and popular favorites as well as a few new songs. He has also returned from a successful tour in Asia last year.. "His newest single is called, "Pretty Baby." from his new studio Album, "be here then." Recently, Beyonce released her Platinum Beyonce Album which includes, "Ring Off.." co-written by Stephen and Beyonce. Stephen just released his newest album, “Blueprint,” Produced by Jon Gilutin.

Songwriters are very special people. They’re the ones who battle with themselves and suffer through an amazingly creative process that most take for granted. When you listen to the songs that Stephen Bishop has written over his career, you find an honesty and transparency that has allowed him to deliver hits such as On And On and Save It For A Rainy Day. His career actually began as a songwriter long before he wrote songs for himself. In fact, one of his first collaborations was with Art Garfunkel, who discovered his songwriting and vocal talent and invited him to sing and also contribute two tracks to his legendary Breakaway project. He has penned songs for Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Steve Perry, Kenny Loggins, The Four Tops and also Pavarotti.
