We talk festivals for a bit and how he handed Jake Bannon from Converge his demo when he was 20 years old. Welcome one and all to the most anticipated episode of the Book thus far! Having cut his teeth in the Ohio Hardcore Scene, studied music abroad, and sharpened his acting chops, Michael is a creative force to be reckoned with. As evidenced by the breadth of our discussion, he is truly a man possessed of superior intellect and boundless empathy. His sentiments regarding his fellow human, the state of all nations, and the decline of human dignity are proof of an enlightened flesh bound spirit. this is a discussion that proves the existence of a soul within the Hollywood corpus. This week Lara and Michael sit down with actor, musician, and strong Palestinian ally Michael Malarkey. We talk about how Michael Malarkey came to his understanding of the situation in Palestine, what motivated him to speak out in support of Palestinians, and we do a deep dive into Michael's family history where we learn his grandfather was born in Nazareth. Malarkey's research into Palestine sent him down a rabbit hole of US imperialism, and the global domination of capitalist interests. We discuss using social media as a tool to educate people and the material consequences of being so outspoken in support of Palestine. Michael Malarkey talks about the importance of siding with your own humanity over a collective or individual identity. We cover the ways in which history has been whitewashed in Palestine and connect that to the ongoing debate about Critical Race Theory in the United States. Finally, we wrap up by discussing Michael Malarkey's upcoming music and film projects and how he hopes to make more art with Palestinian filmmakers and musicians.
After witnessing the ongoing attack from a coordinated campaign to silence him, tens of thousands of people from around the world have come out in support of hip hop artist, campaigner and host of the MintPress podcast “The Watchdog,” Lowkey. An online petition addressed to music giant Spotify, demanding it refuse to buckle to pressure from the Israel lobby to remove his music from its platform, has garnered over 40,000 signatures from members of the public.Joining the wave of support have been many of Hollywood's biggest stars. Actors such as Mark Ruffalo, Michael Malarkey and Liam Cunningham have put their names to it, as have legendary musicians like Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, Genesis' Peter Gabriel and rock band Primal Scream.Prominent political figures have also stood behind Lowkey, including HRH Princess Dana Firas of Jordan, former Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein and South African MP Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, the grandson of the anti-Apartheid hero Nelson Mandela. Support for Lowkey was perhaps strongest in the hip hop world, with figures such as DJ Charlie Sloth and rappers like Immortal Technique, Wretch 32 and Akala signing the petition.MintCast host Mnar Adley speaks to Lowkey about the extraordinary outpouring of global support he has received, why his activism and relentless campaigning for a free Palestine made him a target, and the growing success of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement worldwide.MintPress News is a fiercely independent, reader-supported outlet, with no billionaire owners or backers. The new MintPress podcast “The Watchdog,” hosted by British-Iraqi hip-hop artist Lowkey, closely examines organizations about which it is in the public interest to know -- including intelligence, lobby and special-interest groups influencing policies that infringe on free speech and target dissent. The Watchdog goes against the grain by casting a light on stories largely ignored by the mainstream, corporate media. Hollywood is not exactly known for being a hotbed of anti-war, anti-imperialist activism. Indeed, so close is the relationship between the national security state and Tinseltown that the Department of Defense casually tweeted out on Oscar Night that it works closely with its “partners” in Hollywood to ensure the military is presented in a positive light.“Jack Ryan” star John Krasinski went further, explaining that he had an extremely close bond with the CIA. “I owe them everything,” he said. “The CIA is something that we should all not only cherish but be saying thank you for every single day. They're always trying to do the right thing,” he said of the agency, claiming they “care about the country in a bigger, more idealistic way.”Hollywood is also a keen supporter of America's unofficial fifty-first state, and all its highly questionable activities in the Middle East. As Israel was carrying out a blockade of the Gaza Strip, commonly referred to as the world's largest open-air prison, celebrities like Ashton Kutcher, Gerard Butler, Andy Garcia and Pharrell Williams raised over $60 million for the Israeli Defense Forces at a fundraiser. One celebrity who has spoken up against Israeli actions is the star of “The Vampire Diaries,” Michael Malarkey. As the Israeli government began bombing Gaza in the wake of its storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in May, the 38-year-old actor wrote on his Instagram account: The obsessive lengths being used to delegitimize anyone taking a stand against Israel's apartheid regime are deceitful, despicable, and undemocratic. Those who employ such techniques want us to ignore the multitude of human rights abuses, the usage of illegal weapons and warfare, the unending occupation, the illegal annexation of Palestinian territories, and the callous bloodshed of innocents."“Now is the time to support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions of Israel and to openly challenge those few other countries that have long sponsored the Occupation and vetoed UN resolutions condemning it,” he concluded. Michael Malarkey joins “The Watchdog” host Lowkey today to discuss his career in show business, his political activism, and the difficulties of working in an industry so intertwined with the national security state. “It's fear-based for a lot of people,” he told Lowkey, explaining why more people in Hollywood do not speak up about their political convictions. “I think we're at this very interesting and important place in our human history, where we are awakening,” he added, expressing hope that there is now a possibility for building organizations that can fight for a better world. Today on the podcast, we welcome actor and musician Michael Malarkey. You may know Michael from his acting roles in the Vampire Diaries to Project Blue Book. His most recent album “Graveracer” was released in early 2020. Michael is a huge fan of emo, punk, hardcore, and screamo. My favorite quote was fitting to many that have a love of something not their job and hope they can do one to help the other. He said, “I'm a musician with an acting problem.” Both are great and it was an honor to have Michael be a part of this podcast. If you're a fan of him or not, or know too much or not enough, you'll enjoy this episode.

On the heels of his role in History Channel’s newest drama, Project Bluebook, Michael discusses with Justin and Luke the significance of and value in that which is seemingly unexplainable. Using the show’s non-fiction premise of government cover ups and ufology as a starting point, the trio talk about the bigger picture: society’s willingness to stifle that which we don’t fully understand, contributing to its collective close-mindedness.
The HISTORY channel debuted its paranormal docudrama based on the investigation called “Project Blue Book” on January 8th at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Executive produced by Academy and Golden Globe winner, Robert Zemeckis the series will follow Dr. J Allen Hynek (Aiden Gillen, Game of Thrones), a college professor, who is persuaded to spearhead the investigation. Look who’s just crawled out of the sea - it’s only Michael bloody Malarkey, the British-American actor and singer probably best known for his role as Enzo in the television series The Vampire Diaries but also starring in loads of hit US TV shows when he’s not touring all over the world with his band.Malarkey was born in Beirut, Lebanon to an Irish American father and a British mother of Arab/Italian origin. Malarkey had his beginnings on the London stage appearing in theatre productions such as Spring Storm and Beyond the Horizon at The National Theatre and an adaptation of The Great Gatsby and in the musical Million Dollar Quartet in the role of Elvis Presley in the West End.He spent almost a decade living and working in the UK before landing his role in The Vampire Diaries which caused him to move back to the States to focus more on TV and Film work.Michael currently has just finished work on his second season of TV series The Oath and through a mouthful of crisps he talks to us here about his next role in the forthcoming series Project Blue Book where he stars alongside Aidan Gillen.Let’s hope they don’t need him back anytime soon…Image credit: Robby Klein - www.robbyklein.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
