UnREAL premiered 10 years ago and is having a panel at the ATX Television Festival this year, so I thought what better way to celebrate than to cover the pilot episode. You can stream the show on Netflix.Reality shows are often full of drama, but in the case of dating show `Everlasting', there may be more drama behind the scenes than there is in front of the camera. Executive producer Quinn commands her staff to get dramatic and outrageous footage for the show, which forces young producer Rachel to manipulate the relationships among the contestants to get the show's final cut to match Quinn's vision of it. As show star Adam searches for his perfect mate, the show's staff members deal with their own romantic predicaments on the set. Rachel's ex-boyfriend is one of the show's cameramen, and his current fiancee, Lizzie, is the makeup artist.“The Final Rose” - An UnREAL Cocktail:

I had a lot going on this summer, but I was able to record with 2 other ATX TV Members about this year's festival. It was great as always, but I will say that seeing everyone was what made it amazing. I think we all needed those nights on the Stephen F. Austin Bar balcony spending time together discussing the day, tv, and life. Hope you enjoy this recap, look into going next year, it's so much fun. Check out their YouTube page and their podcast to watch and listen to previous panels. Resident Apple (vegoutrecipes.com): Ingredients 1.5 ounces (1 shot) whiskey 8 ounces (1 cup) apple cider 1 cinnamon stick Directions Pour a shot of whiskey into a cocktail glass. Add the cup of apple cider. Stir the whiskey and apple cider together using the cinnamon stick. Some of the cinnamon will break off to give your cocktail an extra burst of fall flavor. Leave the stick in the drink so it continues to infuse your beverage with cinnamon as you sip. Drinking Game: Drink when... you've seen a show we discuss. you were at that panel. you asked a question at that panel. you haven't seen a show discussed, but are now planning on watching it. Latest Uvalde developments: New details show that police on the scene did not know that 911 calls were being made by kids inside the classroom with the shooter. A mother who ran into the school to rescue her children has told her story to CBS News, after being warned to quiet down by Uvalde police - who have been enlisting biker gangs to help patrol the funerals of the shooting victims. Texas Senator Roland Gutierrez, whose district includes Uvalde, has expressed frustration at being left off of Lt. Governor Dan Patrick's committee of lawmakers addressing the shooting. An ABC News profile shows that Texas U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz are among the top recipients of pro-gun campaign contributions in that body, with Cruz receiving the most at $442,000 over his career - Cornyn has taken $340,000 from pro-gun individuals and political action committees. New details show that lawsuits filed by five APD officers regarding flawed crowd control devices and training related to the George Floyd protests have targeted the city, Mayor Steve Adler, Travis County DA Jose Garza, and a collection of social justice groups including Black Lives Matter and the Austin Justice Coalition. Meanwhile, five more protesters have filed lawsuits against the city over injuries they suffered during the protests. Local COVID positivity rates have risen into double-digit territory - now 19%, similar to numbers seen at the beginning for the Omicron wave in early January. Mixed results for advocates of LGBTQ-friendly bars on 4th Street: Austin's Landmark Commission has chosen not to recommend historic zoning for the area, but additional concessions to the existing businesses have come from the developer seeking to build a high rise on the block. The Downtown Austin Alliance has released its annual State Of Downtown report, showing that commercial building and leasing, business growth and residential sectors are all booming. The Austin City Council is set to consider new policies aimed at making the process of building accessory dwelling units or ADU's easier for Austin homeowners. Couch-surfers rejoice: the ATX Television Festival returns to downtown Austin this weekend. And, today's our last chance at some rain before several consecutive days of potentially record-breaking heat begin - likely also leading to all-time electricity demand highs for the beleaguered Texas power grid.

Julie and Casey chat with Lindsay Scola about her unique career path from TV-jingle-singing, CSPAN-watching child to impact strategist / political operative / entertainment production / entrepreneur. We cover the intersection of pop culture and culture change, how storytellers move the needle, and how activists of a certain age REALLY need to learn to take care of themselves. Along the way, we get stories about 1st grader-driven revolutions and finding your community by dropping your filter. TOP TAKEAWAYS TV shows are a unique vehicle for cultural change — something that really hit home for Lindsay while working on the Obama campaign in 2007 and encountering college students who couldn't believe candidates weren't behind gay marriage, because they'd grown up watching Will & Grace. You never know what kind of work is out there that will combine your interests and curiosities and passions — especially if you've internalized a narrower career narrative. What happens if you step out of that box? How do we teach activists (especially elder Millennials and older) that their needs and health are just as important as their cause (hear some STORIES about Lindsay's time in the political arena…)? Mini-lesson: Being called “intimidating”. ________ Thank you to our Season 3 sponsor, Armoire! With over 20 years working in political operations, advocacy campaigns, and entertainment production, Lindsay brings a depth of knowledge and experience to the social impact sector. Lindsay is an expert on the nexus of entertainment and advocacy. She is passionate about inspiring businesses of all sizes to engage in conversations and concrete actions on conservation, civic responsibility, and social justice, especially with non-traditional audiences. After staging her first walkout over unfair lunchroom treatment in first grade, Lindsay knew she was meant for a life in activism. When she took on her high school for teaching "abstinence-only until marriage" sex education, she became the youngest board member in NARAL Pro-Choice Washington's history. Upon graduating from college, Lindsay worked for U.S. Congressman Adam Smith in Washington, DC, but quickly became disenchanted with how broken the nation's Capitol really was. So, in early 2007, she quit her job, bought a car, and moved to Iowa to work for then-Senator Barack Obama. Following President Obama's historic win in 2008, Lindsay joined the administration working for Energy Secretary Steven Chu. She later ran the scheduling and advance office for UN Ambassador Susan Rice, oversaw Michelle Obama's advance operation during the 2012 re-elect campaign, was part of President Obama's advance team, and executive produced the 2013 Inaugural Parade. Since then, Lindsay has nested her work at the intersection of advocacy and entertainment, working with organizations like The Television Academy (Emmys) and has spoken on the topic at the ATX Television Festival, SXSW, The Riveter, and more. Named a 2015 “40 Under 40” recipient for City and State New York, Lindsay couples creativity and actionable organizing with political savvy to shift the social needle, Lindsay continues to advise entertainment entities on their social impact causes as well as working with political campaigns and nonprofits to authentically engage with artists and influencers. Today, I'm joined by Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson, the founders of ATX Television Festival. They met in LA while they were both working for Fox Studios, and realized there were loads of film festivals but none for TV. Tomorrow starts the first ever ATX TV...from the Couch! Caitlin and Emily discuss the power of story and why they decided to continue to hold the virtual festival this weekend. They share their beliefs on television being a powerful platform and tool for change, and the need to not shy away from difficult conversations but rather to lean into and amplify them. They also highlight the stories being told during the festival that are needed now as much (if not more) than ever before. Then we release our Female Gaze panel recorded January 2020 out of LA’s YouTube Spaces! The male gaze,” largely acknowledged as “the act of depicting women and the world from a masculine, heterosexual perspective that represents women as sexual objects,” has been the dominant viewpoint since the beginning of art and culture -- but what happens when women become the subject instead of the object? This conversation explores the “female gaze” with actors, writers & directors who are reclaiming female agency by (figuratively and literally) shifting viewers’ perspectives, and telling stories that unapologetically place women and their world view at the center.Panelists: Krista Vernoff (Showrunner / Executive Producer, Grey's Anatomy & Station 19)Gloria Calderon Kellett (Showrunner / Executive Producer / Director / Actor, One Day at a Time)Abigail Spencer (Actor, Reprisal)Tina Mabry (Director, Queen Sugar)Moderator: Philiana Ng (Entertainment Tonight)--WHERE TO FIND USFOLLOW us at @ATXFestival on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and let us know your thoughts on this episode (or any episode!) using #TheTVCampfire #TVTogether!SUBSCRIBE to this podcast! We’re just one week away (or 7 days as Emily would say) from ATX TV...From the Couch! In this week’s episode of The TV Campfire, Caitlin & Emily discuss 9 years of working through Memorial Day, and watching other people kick into Summer gear as they’re full on sprinting towards the festival (taking a few food breaks along the way). Then we release a 2017 panel all about friendships (something we need more than ever right now). We all know love is complicated, but not every great relationship arc exists in the dramatic surroundings of romance and family. Some of the most compelling storylines on television are anchored in the loyalties and complexities of friendship and brother/sisterhood. The writers and actors behind some of TV's most indelible friendships discuss the rare mix of chemistry, great writing, and (we assume) a tiny bit of witchcraft that goes into earning (and maintaining) viewers' trust in these platonic soulmate relationships. Now, more than ever, we are working hard to adapt our lifestyles to a new normal with the hope that we evolve into some better ways of life -- whether that is reimagining our business, new ways to share a meal with friends, or even how we record this podcast. Adaptation in media is also an evolution -- with many of our favorite TV series transitioning to the small screen from books and movies. The hope in starting with these source materials is that the stories and characters can expand, exploring something new and different. In this episode, Caitlin and Emily continue to also explore more great TV in their Quarantine Queues and of course...all the food. This week their adventures include the trend of Quarantine bread making! But most importantly they announce ATX TV...from the Couch! Programming! Following that is our Season 4 panel “To Adapt is to Evolve” with Graham Yost, Bryan Fuller and Noah Hawley. Adaptations are hard enough on their own -- honoring an original vision, satisfying a fan base, and translating characters from one medium (written word and film) to another (episodic television). What if in addition to that, you also had to balance tone, voices, and rhythm, and a lot of very passionate opinions about the original material?Hear the conversation between three powerhouse creators, who have managed to do something beyond adaptation. They have been able to respect the original distinctive worlds and characters, while also creating something uniquely their own. Caitlin + Emily (ATX Festival co-founders) continue to navigate through the wild west of Quarantine life. They’ve been “at home” for 56 days here in Austin, and have 28 days to go until ATX TV...from the Couch! And they continue to have no idea what day of the week today is. This week they discuss launching registration (which is free!) and announced virtual programming, as well continuing through their quarantine queues and how they’re working their way through Austin’s takeout! Then they introduce Season 5’s panel Westerns: Then & Now and discuss how it came to have the first ever look at Westworld...plus, how they met Graham Yost! Original panel description: In 1959, twenty-six series in prime time television were traditional Westerns featuring stories of cowboys, gunslingers, outlaws, and an overall sense of a hero vs. a villain. Over 50 years later, the same themes of this mid-century genre still exist, though on a much broader spectrum. From traditional representations like “Hell on Wheels” to more modern thematic series like “Justified” and the fantastical viewpoint of HBO’s upcoming “Westworld,” there is something uniquely American that remains compelling and timeless to TV viewers. Hear writers and actors discuss carrying on this rich tradition of iconic characters, and the stories of rags to riches, revenge, duels, outlaws, lawmen, and the communities they protect.Panelists: Graham Yost (Justified)Jonathan Tucker (Justified) Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels)John Wirth (Hell on Wheels)Jonathan Nolan (Westworld)Lisa Joy (Westworld) Moderator: Ben Blacker--WHERE TO FIND USFOLLOW us at @ATXFestival on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and let us know your thoughts on this episode (or any episode!) using #TheTVCampfire #TVTogether!SUBSCRIBE to this podcast! Whether it is the President of a country, a network, or a festival this is a time we all are in need of strong leaders. Following this week’s chat, we are re-releasing The Presidents of the State of TV (2017, Season 6): From network to cable to streaming platforms, these individuals are deciding the fate of your current and future favorite programming. As we continue to live in a perpetual state of ""Peak TV,"" how does a network or studio decide what content to create? How do they balance their brand, while continuing to grow and challenge their viewers? As the landscape grows, ""channels"" are racing to build audiences' trust in what can be expected from their content -- but budgets get tighter, decisions to make a pilot vs. straight to series get harder, which equals a rising pressure to define their brands and establish audiences.Panelists: Craig Erwich (Hulu)Jennifer Salke (at the time of the panel, NBC)Casey Bloys (HBO)Nick Grad (FX)Gary Levine (Showtime)Moderator: Debra Birnbaum (at the time of the panel,Variety)--WHERE TO FIND USFOLLOW us at @ATXFestival on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and let us know your thoughts on this episode (or any episode!) using #TheTVCampfire #TVTogether!SUBSCRIBE to this podcast!
