Send us a textContent Warning: Filmic violence is and will often be celebrated throughout Season 15 – Squib Season. Second in the series and keeping to their unpatented temporal pincer movement, the enlisted four of TGTPTU storm the beachheads of Season 15 this week to liberate Squib Season's earliest covered picture, the black-and-white WWII movie HELL TO ETERNITY (1960). (Not to be confused with To Hell from Eternity, which does not exist; To Hell and Back, which does and preceded in Technicolor this week's talkie by five years; or From Hell to Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, which is actually the combined titles of two vastly different films released, respectively, 41 years and 35 years after this week's feature.) In Hell to Eternity, the 6'0”-tall, New Orleans-born Caucasian actor Jeffrey Hunter (yes, yes, nerds, we know he's Captain Chistopher Pike, listen back to our The Searchers 4x4 episode but also listen to this week's for an irony behind Hunter's being replaced on Star Trek TOS by actor Sean Kenney in Season 1's clips episode two-parter “The Menagerie”), then age 34, plays war hero and protagonist Guy Gabaldon in this biopic based on the real life events of the 5'4”-foot tall Latino Los Angelean of the same name when he was 18.  As in the movie, Gabaldon was raised by adoptive Japanese parents, learning their first language (and presumably, as in the movie, their stories about fish and love), and enlisted after Pearl Harbor as a translator. It's with his language skills that Gabaldon was able to, as depicted at the end of the film, convince over 800 Japanese soldiers and civilians to surrender, although further research would be required by the author of these show notes to know whether real-life Gabaldon adopted/stole a Japanese child to be his son as implied at the end of the film (IMDB Trivia does claim Gabaldon named one of his sons after Hunter as he was enamored by his portrayal of him, implying Gabaldon had more than one son) or if the eighteen-year-old short king had swell times in swinging Hawaii as shown in the film's contentious, extended party sequence containing not just one but two apartment burlesque routines.  The film is lensed by Burnett Guffey who will go on to shoot (on film) our next earliest entry, i.e., BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967) for which he'd earn his second Academy Award. His first Oscar win was for another flick whose title lends itself to easy confusion with this week's, namely FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953). Also involved, Lieutenant (later Captain) Sulu (or the actor and activist who originally played the helmsman/fencing expert in Star Trek TOS). Also, hundreds of Japanese Imperial Army veterans and active-duty U.S. Marines who reenacted events from the Battle of Saipan on the adjacent island of Okinawa for the cameras commanded by Guffrey. And some squibs.   This episode, hear Ryan explain both what squibs are and, later, how a man got his start as a boy. Jack, subsequent to the latter, loses his mind. Tom spoils the surprise appearance by a famous and long-deceased sports announcer. And Ken, as impossible as it might seem, might actually change his opinion on mic, specifically about the seemingly endless Hawaii party scene.  Subscribe and listen as the Good Pod Boys give a 21-gun salute to this forgotten classic. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

From August 2014: Authors Paul Green and Mary Ann Anderson join Ed for a look back at the life and career of Jeffrey Hunter. Paul's book Jeffrey Hunter: The Film, Television, Radio and Stage Performances is a comprehensive look at the actor best known for his starring roles as Martin Pawley in The Searchers, Christopher Pike in the original pilot episode of Star Trek, and Jesus Christ in Nicholas Ray's King of Kings. Mary knew Jeffrey Hunter; her mother, actress Emily McLaughlin, married Hunter just three months before he died in May 1969. By all acccounts, Jeffrey Hunter was not only highly respected as an actor, but a genuinely nice person. His sudden death age at forty-two was a shock to everyone who knew him and left many wondering what direction his life and career would have taken, had he lived.

Carey Foster appeared in the original TOS pilot, "The Cage," with Jeffrey Hunter as a character who ended up not making the final cut. However, she returned as a Starfleet officer clad in blue in the background of many episodes during the first season of the show.Foster's time in Star Trek was the next step in her relationship with Gene Roddenberry, her uncle, who had previously cast her in an episode of "The Lieutenant." Her Hollywood career had little to do with acting until that point, predominantly working as a dancer in big budget musical movies and several features with Elvis Presley - a superstar she briefly dated!Carey Foster stops by Trek Untold to tell us stories about working on these many sets, her dancing pedigree, and what she does today as an educator in the Montessori system of learning. Our story tells the tale of Tom Owens, the clean-cut and sophisticated gentleman son of J. C. Owens of the Overland Mail Company.

While Paramount promoted their new discovery as a spitfire Latina born in Mexico City, Drake was, in fact, an African-American woman from Florida who pretended to be Latin, going so far as to learn Spanish fluently, in order to have a better chance at a Hollywood career. We're in our last week for our month's theme of ASSHOLES ON FILM and we had to hit up a flick with our Asshole Theme Mascot, John Wayne. Why not hit up one of the most beloved John Ford/John Wayne westerns ever. Yep, we're talking about the 1956 classic “The Searchers” starring John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles and a young Natalie Wood. The character of Ethan Edwards is quite the racist so you know John Wayne didn't have to “act” too hard. His racism doesn't ebb when a particular Comanche tribe kills his family and abducts his nieces. He doesn't even like the guy who is helping him look for his family throughout the movie because he's 1/8th Cherokee. He's a cunt and he will probably kill his niece when he finds her because she's probably too integrated within the tribe. Also this is Charlie McCorrey's movie and we're all just along for the ride. Lauren not immediately jumping on Charlie's crotch is probably the most baffling thing about this movie. We also have all the hot goss on Nancy “Backlot Special” Reagan. We also name every Little Debbie snack cake. It's very exciting. Happy Asshole month! Hier wollte jemand Pike kennen lernen?

4x4 JOHN FORD PART TWO: THE SEARCHERS & THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE  W/RICK PATTLast week we talked about a few seminal Ford films that weren't westerns (The Informer and Grapes of Wrath). This week, get them saddles secure and oil them there spurs (??) because we have two of Ford's most famous collabs with John Wayne (the actor, not the airport). Their most enduring of 17 films together, THE SEARCHERS (1956) is a visual reminder of the power of film. You know the story: racist dude visits his brother, who lives in an inhospitable - but lovely piece - in Monument Valley. A band of Native Americans kills the family and kidnaps Natalie Wood, resulting into an obsessive years-long hunt by Wayne and Jeffrey Hunter. It's a difficult film, thematically, but Ford uses Wayne and his by-then sanctified screen persona to explore knotty issues in a visual way that has earned The Searchers its place at the top of the film pantheon.Speaking of doing interesting things with Wayne's screen persona, how about THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962)? Wayne did the film as a favor to Ford, who was well past his sell-by date in Hollywood by this point. Wayne plays a total a-hole against Jimmy Stewart, who plays a kind of harbinger of modernity in a western town with Wayne as one of them violent western tamers no longer needed. Between them (besides a way too  young Vera Miles) is hothead Lee Marvin as the titular Liberty Valance, a scourge of anarchy, both a reminder of the violent recent past and a promise of what always tags along with prosperity and the illusion of safety in a society. Ford's themes of community, violence and the intersection of a violent past and a bright future are in full display here.A couple good ones. Again Rick Patt curates this mini Ford fest and walks us through these films. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096

Cobb schools want more police officers on campus

The Cobb County School District in Georgia has proposed allocating $930,578 for 11 new school resource officers in its fiscal 2024 budget. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale cites recent school shootings as reasons for adding armed officers to the force, stating that they deter potential intruders and provide immediate response times. However, Democratic school board member Becky Sayler expressed concern that an increase in armed officers could result in more student arrests, particularly among students of color. Republican board member Randy Scamihorn assured Sayler that the officers are well-trained to de-escalate situations. The final approval of the budget is expected on May 18th. Marietta City Council's approval of a mixed-use development project that would replace a Kroger grocery store with apartments and retail space was vetoed by Mayor Steve "Thunder" Tumlin. The project would have seen the redevelopment of a 4.8-acre lot by developer William Casaday, who requested a rezoning. Tumlin's veto was backed by Councilman Grif Chalfant, who campaigned for lower housing density. A six-month moratorium on new apartment building applications was approved after the project's rejection. The property's future remains unclear, with concerns raised about the possibility of less desirable commercial ventures worsening traffic in the area. Kennesaw House, now home to the Marietta History Center, was once a hotel where James J. Andrews and his group of volunteer raiders from the Union Army stayed the night before embarking on the Great Locomotive Chase in 1862. The raiders commandeered The General locomotive and three box cars heading for Big Shanty, Kennesaw, cutting telegraph wires and attempting to do as much damage to the railroad as possible. They were eventually captured, and Andrews and seven others were convicted as spies and hanged. Disney turned it into a film in 1956, staring Fess Parker as Andrews and Jeffrey Hunter as Fuller.  The Southern Museum, located across the tracks in Kennesaw, now houses The General locomotive and tells the story of the Great Locomotive Chase. The Southern Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Mount Paran Christian School has announced that student Claire Finch has been named a finalist for the 2023 Georgia Governor's Honors Program (GHP) as a visual arts major. The GHP is a four-week-long college immersive program for Georgia's top students in academics and the arts, and it will be held at Georgia Southern University. As a finalist, Finch represents the top quartile of the top percentile of her student peer group in the state. MPCS also set new school benchmarks with its largest contingency of nominees ever and multiple semifinalists named in one year. The program is fully funded by Georgia's state legislature.  Cobb County School District Superintendent Chris Ragsdale surprised many by recommending a tax cut as part of the district's $1.5 billion budget for 2024. Ragsdale proposed reducing the millage rate from 18.9 to 18.7 mills and offering 7.5% raises to all full-time employees. The budget also includes about $83 million to fund the raises, which range from 7.5% to 12.1%. Ragsdale called the budget "very employee focused." The tax rollback would reduce the district's revenue from property taxes by about $7.6 million annually. Two public hearings are scheduled to allow the public to weigh in on the proposal. The Marietta City Council has voted to freeze new apartment applications for six months, directing city staff to conduct a study examining the city's zoning code as it relates to apartments. The item authorizes them to hire a consultant if needed. Skepticism about apartments has been a concern for some time, as they have been associated with transiency, crime, and a lack of upkeep which leads to blight. The moratorium was approved after the mayor vetoed the council's approval of the 322-unit apartment complex at the corner of Powers Ferry and Delk roads. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com          See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One of my favorite podcast episodes to share with people is #46: Starting a Wildlife Career at 40: Interview with Jeffrey Hunter. In this episode, I interview Jeffrey Hunter of the National Parks Conservation Association on how he left his corporate job to pursue one in wildlife at 40. One of the people listening to this was Ron Lewis. During the pandemic, Ron was let go from his engineering job at 49. He always loved wildlife and it had lingered in the back of his mind that he should pursue a wildlife career, but things always got in the way.One day he happened to be listening to the Jeffrey Hunter interview and it changed his life. This was the sign he needed – it was finally the perfect time to pursue this career. Ron and I started talking on Instagram and I was so excited to hear this! But even more exciting was that Ron got a job right away – a full time job. And he was also back in school. To be honest, this was pretty surprising to me. I hear all the time (and experienced it myself) about how difficult it is to get jobs. But he got one right away and with NO experience. How did he do it? I knew I had to have him on the podcast to find out.In this episode, we talk about just exactly that – how Ron got a job once he made the decision to pursue this career. As you'll find out, Ron is a master networker, so it wasn't just luck. We also talk about how having mechanical experience is a big asset in this field. Specifically, we talk about:What were Ron's first steps to transitioning to a career in wildlifeHow Ron networked effectively (and you can too)How Ron's previous job helped him get his wildlife jobUnexpected skills that will help you in wildlife jobsWhat kinds of non-wildlife jobs are best to get if you can't get a wildlife jobWhat Unity online college is likeand MORE!For full show notes click hereGet a free chapter of my book “Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology: What It's Like and What You Need to Know” to see how I can help you in your career: https://stephanieschuttler.com/getting-a-job-in-wildlife-biology-book/ Want to learn about cool animals, conservation, and get tips about careers in wildlife biology, science, and more? Christopher Pike is the original captain of the famed starship Enterprise, played first by Jeffrey Hunter in an unaired 1965 pilot (“The Cage”) and now by Anson Mount in the forthcoming CBS All Access series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Mount's portrayal first won over audiences and critics alike in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery (2017), which reimagined Pike as a grounded and unflappable leader, a singular and remarkably old-fashioned hero for our cynical and suspicious times. Pike understands that humanity is flawed but does not give in to despair. He does not condescend, and there is not a trace of sexism in him; he shows nothing but gratitude to the three women who rescue him early in the season and continues to treat them with respect and appreciation. Pike understands that these values of bravery and respect, while sometimes seen as traditionally masculine, are actually universal virtues, just as Christ's model isn't just a model for Christian men but a model for all Christians, whether Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female (Gal. 3:28). This is a conversation is a discussion about an unlikely hero in the Star Trek Discovery television series. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Cole Burgett about his Postmodern Realities article, “Star Trek's Christopher Pike: An Old Fashioned Hero For Our Cynical Times” which is in the upcoming 43:3 issue of the Christian Research Journal. July 2019 saddles up a new theme of films that can't help but make you feel that oppressive heat of summer. HOWDY PARTNER ushers in the Western a formerly beloved genre that eventually was taken out back and shot by Hollywood. Simply put, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) have picked the movies for this month that meet the genre criteria of Westerns though their picks couldn't be more different in many ways. There are tons of movies to choose from, but the four listed below are what they landed on. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 4 - The Searchers (1956) Jonathan had to pick another classic that he'd missed, which for this genre is far too many and hard to narrow down, and selected The Searchers (1956). This film clearly inspired many to follow, include Bone Tomahawk, as the plot for this John Ford film states "An American Civil War veteran embarks on a journey to rescue his niece from the Comanches." Considering it stars John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, and Vera Miles it was clearly one that needs to be seen and a perfect conclusion for the month. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

Primitive Culture: A Star Trek History and Culture Podcast

Cast Changes in Star Trek. When Star Trek’s original pilot, “The Cage,” was rejected by NBC, Gene Roddenberry was forced to rethink the acting lineup for his new show. Jeffrey Hunter’s Christopher Pike was out, replaced by the more charismatic William Shatner as James T. Kirk. Gone, too, was Roddenberry’s partner, Majel Barrett, leaving Leonard Nimoy as the only cast member to survive the recasting process. It was the first in a series of periodic reshuffles that have marked the franchise throughout its long history, many the result of bitter behind-the-scenes disputes between actors and producers. Most recently, the Deep Space Nine documentary What We Left Behind has shone a light on the circumstances surrounding Terry Farrell’s abrupt departure from the show at the end of its penultimate season—a subject that is clearly emotive for those involved, even more than 20 years later. In this episode of Primitive Culture, recorded live in London following the first public screening of the Deep Space Nine documentary, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Carlos Miranda, Drew Barker, and Andy Poulastides to discuss Star Trek’s reshuffling of personnel in front of the camera. We consider the introduction of Worf to DS9 and Seven of Nine to Voyager with the goal of boosting viewing figures, the abrupt departures of Gates McFadden from The Next Generation, Terry Farrell’s exit from DS9 and Jennifer Lien’s Voyager farewell, and the ways in which modern TV sensibilities—in the wake of shows such as The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones—have upended long-held assumptions about the longevity of series regulars.

STAR TREK's lineage is one that goes back to 1964, when the original pilot episode, "THE CAGE" starring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike, was first produced. That episode has largely been left alone as a standalone tale in the long-running half-century long canon of the series...until now. Not only do these two DISCOVERY episodes build on the threads they've been weaving all season, but they work up to a story that is 55 years in the making, by taking us back to the first strange new world ever explored by the USS ENTERPRISE on television. To say that our panel have a variety of thoughts on this and a whole lot more is putting it mildly. Beyond that, we react to the identity crisis of HUGH CULBER, the family dynamics in the House of SAREK, the event that split apart SPOCK and MICHAEL BURNHAM, and the ongoing saga of SECTION 31 in the 23rd century! This week co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto talk about the actor who played the Captain of the Enterprise, William Shatner, on this episode of 70s Trek. His portrayal of the unflappable, heroic captain has become iconic.  While playing Kirk wasn't difficult for Shatner, working after the show went off the air was. Early Life. William Shatner grew up in Montreal, Canada and knew early on he wanted to be an actor.  After college, he worked extensively on Broadway and in early television.  During his early career, Bill Shatner was considered to be on the same career trajectory as Robert Redford. Star Trek When Star Trek's first captain, Jeffrey Hunter, decided not to return for the second pilot, Gene Roddenberry asked William Shatner to step in as the new skipper of the Enterprise. When the show was picked up and went into production, Shatner remembers that it didn't feel like work.  Instead, he considered the feeling that the cast and crew shared as being family. After Trek Shatner went through a lot around the time that the show was cancelled.  Not only was he losing a steady job relationships from the show, but he was also going through a divorce.  The long hours away from home took their toll on his marriage. But his alimony was based on his Star Trek salary, so he needed to work and earn a paycheck.  He took the steadiest job he could get: He signed on with a traveling play for the summer of 1969. Trying to save money, he bought a used pickup truck with a collapsable camper and drove from town to town where the play opened next. This living arrangement found him laying in his camper with a small black and white TV on his chest when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon on July 20, 1969.  It leaves you with an ironic image: The former Captain Kirk had been reduced to watching the first real steps of man's exploration of space in the back of a used camper. The 1970s Shatner spent the years between 1969 and 1978 taking any acting job he could find.  As a result he accumulated an impressive amount of work.  In those years he worked on the following projects: 7 films 18 TV movies 2 mini series Guest-starred on 45 different TV series eoisodes Starred in one Prime-Time series, Barbary Coast And Voiced a children's TV show. Star Trek: The Animated Series. But The Motion Picture paved the way for more movies and more success on the 1980s and the decades to follow.  William Shatner proved he was a survivor in the 1970s.  He overcame the obstacle of being type-cast and re-invented himself as a journey-man actor. Ultimately, Shatner had the last laugh, re-inventing himself and finding success time and again throughout his career.

Our first installment is the original pilot starring Jeffrey Hunter, "The Cage", which was later used to cobble together a two-parter called "The Menagerie". It's a fascinating start.

We find much to like, love, and laugh at in John Ford's VistaVision classic. Discussion wanders between the winds like an eye-less Comache to cover the long shadow of influence cast by the film (Star Wars, Scorsese, Buddy Holly), the liabilities of Jeffrey Hunter's performance, and Tysto's fascinating family history (his ancestors once kidnapped Natalie Wood's sister!). We also extol the virtues of wearing suspenders with jeans (well, I do) and stare longingly at Mose Harper's ripped-to-shreds six-pack abs. The Searchers is a 1956 American Technicolor VistaVision Western film directed by John Ford, based on the 1954 novel by Alan Le May, and set during the Texas–Indian Wars. The film stars John Wayne as a middle-aged Civil War veteran who spends years looking for his abducted niece (Natalie Wood), accompanied by his adoptive nephew (Jeffrey Hunter). Critic Roger Ebert found Wayne's character, Ethan Edwards, "one of the most compelling characters Ford and Wayne ever created." It was named the Greatest American Western of all time by the American Film Institute in 2008, and it placed 12th on the American Film Institute's 2007 list of the 100 greatest American movies of all time.[3] Entertainment Weekly named it the best Western of all time.[4] The British Film Institute's Sight & Sound magazine ranked it as the seventh best movie of all time based on a 2012 international survey of film critics [5][6] and the French magazine Cahiers du cinéma ranked The Searchers in 2008 number 10 in their list of the top 100 best films of all time.
