POPULARITY
Welcome back to the pod! This week we're heading back to 2011 and the film Margin Call. Now lots of you may have missed this when it first came out but its online popularity has given it a real second wind. We get stuck into some of the best scenes in the film in particular the boardroom sequence where Jeremy Irons lays down the law, we discuss the nature of how money can change an individual, how morality and self preservation can get in the way of each other and what lengths people will go to to ensure survival in their own bubble. How about this for a cast by the way: Kevin Spacey as Sam Rogers, Paul Bettany as Will Emerson, Jeremy Irons as John Tuld, Zachary Quinto as Peter Sullivan, Stanley Tucci as Eric Dale, Simon Baker as Jared Cohen, Demi Moore as Sarah Robertson, Penn Badgley as Seth Bregman, Mary McDonnell as Mary Rogers, Aasif Mandvi as Ramesh Shah. Hell of a shoot out for MVP!There are few redeeming features around any of the characters but we take a look at which characters seem to have some level of moral sensibility - as we rank them on the scumbagometer! Finally we discuss whether a film can become a fine wine through the nature of its online presence and being resurfaced through Youtube! Lots to get into - back with you on Friday with what to watch this weekend!Time to get watching for next week: Into the Wild (2007) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
You're a cab driver. There's someone going around killing your co-workers. You're tired, your stomach is full of roaches from the Chinese food you ate earlier and it's... 3 A.M. Lee Davis worked on some Spike Lee movies doing craft services and set production and then wrote and directed this. It has a weirdly stacked cast with Danny Glover, Michelle Rodriguez, Bobby Cannavale, Pam Grier, Sarita Choudhury, Mike Star, Aasif Mandvi and lots of other familiar faces. Is it good? Great question! We want to tell you! Oh, and Spike is in this. If you liked this, please do review anywhere you can leave a podcast review. We will cover a movie of your choosing if you let us know about it. Feel free to hit the hotline or Gmail. Next week, the final Spike Lee movie with Spike Lee doing a role of some kind.
Host Meg Wolitzer presents two stories in which some things are saved and some are left behind. In Haruki Murakami's “Lederhosen,” performed by Aasif Mandvi, the traditional German shorts become a singular obsession for one half of a married couple. In Elizabeth McCracken's “Robinson Crusoe at the Waterpark,” a couple and their son find themselves in over their heads. Mike Doyle is the reader.
As we get closer to the premiere of Yellowjackets season three, Jodie and Andrea are checking out some shows our listeners have recommended we watch in the off-season. This week, we're diving into “Genesis 1,” the pilot episode of Evil, a show that's part supernatural thriller, part procedural drama. Evil follows forensic psychologist Kristen Bouchard, played by Katja Herbers, who teams up with David Acosta, a Catholic Church assessor played by Mike Colter, and tech expert Ben Shakir, played by Aasif Mandvi. Often compared to X-Files and Law & Order, we think it also shares some DNA with House and Angel. It's fun and a little hokey, and there's no surprise that Jodie has deemed it an Andrea Show. Next week, we'll be watching the first episode of From. Join us for the ride and let us know what else we should add to our list!Follow:The Watchers on Instagram (@WatchersPodNJ)Andrea on Instagram (@AQAndreaQ)Jodie on Instagram (@jodie_mim)Our sister show, New Jersey Is the World, on Instagram (@newjerseyistheworld)Thanks to Kitzy (@heykitzy) for the use of our theme song, "No Book Club."
This week on The Treatment, Elvis welcomes Oscar-nominated actor Jude Law who is currently starring in the FBI thriller The Order. Then, actor Aasif Mandvi stops by to talk about starring in a new production of Samuel Beckett’s classic Waiting for Godot at the Geffen Playhouse. And on The Treat, actor and comedian Ilana Glazer talks about a “biblical” double album that she loves.
Send us a textThis week we are joined by Mia Lemel as we discuss questionable parenting and lapsed catholicism when we dive deep into the canceled CBS series: Evil. Want to save the TV Show Evil? Aasif Mandvi aka Ben the Magnificent tells fans how to help! Our latest podcast episode featuring the talented and insightful Aasif Mandvi. We had a candid conversation about the end of the show "Evil" and the impact it has had on the cast and fans. Here are three key takeaways from our discussion: The Power of Fan Support: Aasif shared how fans can make a difference in bringing back beloved shows. By mobilizing and voicing their support on social media and through other channels, fans can influence the decision-makers to reconsider ending a show prematurely. It's a reminder that our voices as viewers can truly make a difference in the entertainment industry. Playing the role of a CAT: Yes, of course we talked about his voice work and stepping into the role of a cat in the hit movie, Paws of Fury alongside comedian Gabriel Iglesias. Embracing New Opportunities: Despite the end of "Evil," Aasif shared his current projects, including an AMC miniseries and a theater production in Los Angeles. His ability to pivot and embrace new opportunities showcases the resilience and versatility required in the entertainment industry. It's a testament to his dedication to his craft and willingness to explore different genres and mediums. ------------------- Stay tuned for more celebrity interviews, positive vibes of pop culture, people to know, and pets on the KJ Today Show. The cast of Evil — Michael Emerson (Leland Townsend), Katja Herbers (Kristen Bouchard), and Aasif Mandvi (Ben Shaki) — join Aaron to discuss their four seasons on the show about a team of assessors working with the Roman Catholic Church to evaluate potential possession cases, and their larger conflicts with the forces of Hell itself. With the series finale now live, the cast does discuss the importance of the show in their careers, and how they felt the conclusion bid farewell to their characters (and left the door open for a potential return).

Aasif Mandvi was 40 when he got the call that changed the arc of his career, a call to audition for The Daily Show. He had what he called "little wins" to propel his career prior to that, including an acclaimed off Broadway show called "Sakina's Restaurant" in which he created and performed numerous characters. But far too frequently, he was offered roles that were stereotypical of Hollywood's treatment of actors of South Asian descent. He is a joy to interview, forever thoughtful and reflective about what it's like to be a brown man in Western culture and entertainment. His journey started in India, then England, across the pond to Tampa and finally to New York and stages and screens around the world.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Aasif Mandvi is a British-American actor, comedian, playwright and author, whose diverse career traverses Broadway, Merchant-Ivory, Marvel, television and comedy. His theater work includes Oklahoma! on Broadway, the Pulitzer-Prize winning play Disgraced and Mandvi's off-Broadway, one man show, Sakina's Restaurant, which explored the South Asian immigrant experience and won an Obie. He also created the Islamaphobia-tackling digital series Halal in the Family, which earned a Peabody. The former The Daily Show correspondent is currently starring in the CBS psychological drama Evil and Would I Lie to You?, the CW panel show. Alec Baldwin and Mandvi talk about Mandvi's upbringing and how it contributed to his adaptability, the serendipitous events that changed the course of his career and becoming a father later in life. Ever since Evil first debuted on CBS in 2019, I was told time and time again that it was an absolute must-watch, that this genre mash-up of a show was right up my alley. I'm deeply embarrassed to admit that it took me until summer of 2022 to actually take that advice. But, sure enough, I fell so hard for Evil that now I'm determined to pay it forward — go watch all three seasons of Evil on Paramount+ right now!The show stars Mike Coulter as David, a Catholic seminarian working as an assessor, someone tasked with investigating the legitimacy of miracles and also claims of demonic activity. David does this with the help of Aasif Mandvi's Ben, a contractor who specializes in technology and has a knack for disproving supernatural phenomena via rational explanations. Rounding out the team with a different perspective and set of skills is Katja Herbers' Kristen, a psychologist who doesn't believe in the supernatural but rather that everything has an explanation in science. However, the more cases the team takes, the more Kristen's core beliefs are challenged.Clearly I adore Evil overall, but one particular element of the show that makes it a must-watch series is Herbers' performance. Not only does she deftly weave through complex cases that put everything the character believes to the test, but she goes all-in when tackling every single ounce of it, and given how many genres and tones Evil spans, that makes for a deliciously wide-ranging performance.Given my enthusiasm for the show and her performance, it probably goes without saying that it was the ultimate treat to welcome Herbers to Collider Ladies Night to discuss her journey from Holland to Hollywood and, of course, what went down in Evil Season 3. Theater. Film. Television. Aasif Mandvi, the groundbreaking South Asian actor, does it all. From SNL to CBS' Evil, he dives into his acting career and recounts his stories of answering services while auditioning, his baby's giggle, brown representation, and so much more, on this episode of The Woke Desi.
When he switched from theater to film and television, Aasif Mandvi found himself relegated to roles as cab drivers and deli owners. Now The Daily Show correspondent created a new web sitcom, Halal in the Family, in an effort to tackle anti-Muslim bias.
