Howie Klein introduces us to Congressional Candidate Aaron Regunberg. Aaron Regunberg is the progressive candidate running for Congress in a special election this year in Rhode Island. A former state rep, Aaron led successful fights to pass paid sick days legislation, raise his state's tipped minimum wage for the first time in 20 years, reform the use of solitary confinement, expand harm reduction strategies, and enact new renewable energy programs. He's also a climate lawyer and activist. He's been endorsed by all the good groups out there -- progressive orgs like Blue America, Working Families Party, Our Revolution, and Progressive Democrats of America; unions like the Communications Workers of America and the Association of Flight Attendants; climate groups like Climate Hawks Vote and Rhode Island's 350.org affiliate; and progressive icons like Congressman Jamie Raskin. And his campaign is the best chance for us to score a major progressive pick-up opportunity in 2023. So, the progressives caved and lost their leverage. I hope with every ounce of my being that Pramila Jayapal knows what she's doing. The fact is, the progressives got played. On Friday night, every Democratic in the House except for six voted for the "bipartisan infrastructure bill" or BIF, as it was euphemistically called). With the help of 13 Republicans who had the backbone (or death wish) needed, they got it across the finish line. A giddy Nancy Pelosi then sent it to the President's desk, where it'll sit for a week until Congress returns from recess. Of course they need another break. After all, the next one isn't for another two whole weeks, when they'll take off for Thanksgiving. And their next deadline isn't way off the in the distance -- December 3. That's when the government will both run out of funding and will hit the debt ceiling. Seriously. They're taking this week off? And you wonder why we can't have nice things. Meanwhile, this *BIF* is the hard infrastructure bill. We need the other one, the "Build Back Better (BBB) Act"... you know, the human infrastructure bill, to pass in order to get any real investment in mitigating the climate disaster. So why are members of Congress and the administration touting this first part of the package as something to help fight climate change? I'll ask our guest today. RL Miller is the founder of Climate Hawks Vote (climatehawksvote.org), and Twitter ranted over the weekend about just what the BIF actually does regarding the climate catastrophe...

Climate and science super PACs are a donor's best bet for getting climate leaders elected to public office. While 50% of direct progressive campaign contributions go to waste, these super PACs focus resources where they can do the most good, training and supporting climate candidates. We talk with RL Miller of Climate Hawks Vote, Shaunessy Naughton of 314 Action, and Mary Lynn Cesar of Blueprint about the need to replace Democrats who are beholden to fossil fuel interests, the trials of teaching scientists how to talk like regular people, and the importance of downballot races and community organizing for a healthy democracy.
RL Miller, once called a political terrorist by Jerry Brown, has been elected to the DNC. She is a long time environmental activist and founder of Climate Hawks Vote. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Our guest today is RL Miller, a determined and outspoken political activist who founded Climate Hawks Vote, an organization that endorses and supports democratic candidates who are serious about developing effective climate policies. She has been a leading advocate for a presidential climate debate and getting Democratic candidates to pledge that they won’t take fossil fuel money, and she was just elected to the Democratic National Committee. RL is angry that DNC chair Tom Perez refused to stage a presidential climate debate and over his reversal of the DNC resolution that she pushed not to accept fossil fuel money. She is determined to fix those things and work to make the DNC more transparent and democratic and most importantly more devoted to fighting climate change.LinksClimate Hawks VoteEpisode webpage: RL Miller | Climate hawk in the DNCIf you would like to support the show please click here.Music by:Avery ReidyKeaton ButlerTheme music is by JuicesAudio production by Keaton Butler – keatonbutlerrecording@gmail.comPlease share the show with a friend.Support the show (http://patreon.com/howtostopclimatechange)
Sunrise Movement activists outside Rep. Nancy Pelosi's office in December. Photo courtesy of Sunrise Movement. The Green New Deal seems to be the big idea of the moment. But will the ambitious climate change solution that also seeks a just and inclusive transition to a clean, fossil-fuel free economy live up to its aspirations? What will it take to build the broad coalition of environmental groups, labor groups, industry groups and politicians required to move this deal forward? Terra Verde host and Earth Island Journal editor Maureen Nandini Mitra discusses the details with RL Miller, who heads the political action committee Climate Hawks Vote, and Will Wiltschko, director of the California Trade Justice Coalition. The post Can the Green New Deal Deliver? – January 18, 2019 appeared first on KPFA.
The Democratic National Committee recently decided to no longer accept campaign donations from fossil fuel companies. The move signals the party’s commitment to addressing climate change. But could blocking contributions from oil, gas and coal companies end up hurting Democrats in the midterm election? We discuss the new DNC policy with RL Miller, political director at Climate Hawks Vote, chair of the California Democratic Party’s environmental caucus, and a co-author of the resolution. Before that, we answer a listener’s question about the influence of billionaire conservative activists Charles and David Koch. Did Republicans start to resist climate action because of the Koch brothers' involvement? We also check in on the non-partisan, non-profit Citizens' Climate Lobby, which met with members of Congress last week to advocate for a price on carbon. One participant admits progress is slow, but insists the dialogue is valuable. To kick off the show, we briefly circle back on the Climate Solutions Caucus, bipartisan group of lawmakers seeking to advance climate change policies. Several Republican members recently voted against valuing carbon in environmental regulations. Is the Caucus a sham?Recommended reading:HuffPost: DNC Quietly Adopts Ban On Fossil Fuel Company DonationsNYT: How G.O.P.
