America is separating into two nations with two different experiences of reality itself: Red America and Blue America. As Robert Talisse, Vanderbilt University political theorist and today’s Utterly Moderate podcast guest, writes: “[O]ur everyday social environments are increasingly segregated along partisan lines. It is no exaggeration to say that in the United States today, opposing partisans live in different social worlds. For example, liberals and conservatives live in different kinds of neighborhoods, shop at different stores, purchase different products, drive different vehicles, express different aesthetic preferences, work in different occupations, and form different kinds of family groups. They eat different foods. They understand words differently and even exhibit different patterns of pronunciation. The familiar narrative of ‘red’ and ‘blue’ states goes far deeper than geography. In the United States today, political affiliation is more of a lifestyle than an outlook on the purposes of government.” Utterly Moderate host Lawrence Eppard has written about similar phenomena: the increasingly distinct epistemologies of left and right. On this episode of Utterly Moderate, Eppard and Talisse discuss the troubling state of polarization in America today, and how each of us might better ourselves in order to better our democracy. In this WhoWhatWhy podcast, veteran journalist Sasha Abramsky reveals a striking paradox: Progressives, long suspicious of states' rights — once a reactionary battle cry against civil rights and federal reforms — are now embracing state power as their best defense against growing authoritarianism. As the federal government tilts rightward, blue states are forming unprecedented coalitions to preserve democratic values and progressive policies. But could these defensive measures actually accelerate America's political fracturing?

In this episode, I talk with activist, sex advice columnist, and progressive journalist Dan Savage about the legacy of “The Urban Archipelago,” a groundbreaking piece he commissioned and edited two decades ago in the wake of GW Bush's reelection, urging Democrats to embrace cities as their political base and future. We explore how NIMBY-captured Democratic city leadership has stifled urban potential — and why improving and growing cities isn't just policy; it's party building. This is a public episode. Today I talked to Matthew Ferrence about his book I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me: Essays on Rural Political Decay (West Virginia UP, 2024). When a progressive college professor runs for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in a deeply conservative rural district, he loses. That's no surprise. But the story of how Ferrence loses and, more importantly, how American political narratives refuse to recognize the existence and value of nonconservative rural Americans offers insight into the political morass of our nation. In essays focused on showing goats at the county fair, planting native grasses in the front lawn, the political power of poetry, and getting wiped out in an election, Ferrence offers a counter-narrative to stereotypes of monolithic rural American voters and emphasizes the way stories told about rural America are a source for the bitter divide between Red America and Blue America. The end of this seemingly interminable election season is in sight... less than three weeks away. As important as it is to elect Kamala Harris & Time Walz as POTUS & VPOTUS, it's just as important to give them a Democratic controlled Congress so they can actually get meaningful work done.Today's Thursday, so we'll talk with Howie Klein of Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC about those congressional races and see how the Blue America-endorsed candidates are faring, and remind you who they are so you can vote for them too. Blue America now has a contest going on to support Congressman Jamie Raskin's Democracy Summer. Get all the details here, and support an amazing resource offered by my favorite Congressman! Also, yesterday, many of us who rarely if ever turn on the Fox (not) News Channel tuned in to two shows yesterday -- one billed as a "townhall" meeting with host Harris Faulkner and TFG; the other a sit down interview with VP Kamala Harris conducted by the guy who many who should know better call a real journalist, Brett Baier. After Baier's rude questioning and constant interrupting of our sitting Vice President, no one should make that mistake ever again.
In several ways, akin to the growing collective demographic of people who don't have children, the overlooked value of voter relevance & influence is too often dismissed by dominant political narratives. Tune in for this timely conversation with Matthew Ferrence, author of I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me: Essays on Rural Political Decay (West Virginia University Press, 2024). In 2020, Matthew Ferrence ran for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, in a deeply-red district, and lost quite badly. In his newest book, he reflects on this experience to explore how American political narratives refuse to recognize the existence and value of nonconservative rural Americans, and how losing offers insight into the political morass of our nation. In I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me he offers a counter-narrative to stereotypes of monolithic rural American voters and emphasizes that the ways stories are told about rural America are a source for the bitter divide between Red America and Blue America. Tune in live or on-demand to learn more about the underpinnings of the US political landscape and the need to recognize overlooked nonconservative voters in rural America.
Politics and culture intersect bigly on this week's podcast. Adam Hirschfelder, a pundit-in-the-wings, joins host Neal Pollack to talk about the J.D. Vance phenomenon. Specifically, they discuss how 'Hillbilly Elegy,' Vance's memoir, was once the publishing-industry standard bearer for understanding Appalachia and the "Trump voter." "This book was embraced by liberals across the country," Adam says. Boy, have times changed. Neal points out the irony that a memoirist is potentially one step away from the Presidency. Neal compares Vance to Barack Obama, but Obama's memoirs, while well-written "actual books" were clearly part of a political strategy. No one saw Vance coming at the time in 2016. Maybe Vance did."It's as if one of my memoirs had become a huge best-seller, and then I became a Senator from Texas, and now was Kamala Harris's Vice-President." That would be quite a multiverse timeline. Meanwhile, 'Hillbilly Elegy' is "off the chains." "Those houses in the Hamptons don't build themselves," Adam says.Meanwhile, Donald Trump cannot stop invoking "the late, great Hannibal Lecter" on the campaign trail. Not much to say here other than it's hilarious and ridiculous. Also, Hannibal Lecter is a fictional character. And he's not dead even in his fictional universe.Jake Harris joins the podcast to talk about 'Twisters.' He saw it in a screening in Dallas with a bunch of meteorologists. Talk about a receptive audiences! 'Twisters' has a strong female protagonist, weather porn, lots of trucks and red-dirt country music, beautiful Oklahoma landscapes, and a realistic rodeo scene. It's the perfect summer blockbuster to appeal to Red and Blue America alike, the film that will bring us all together. Neal refers to costar Glen Powell as the "emotional support dog" for the protagonist, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones. If you feel it, chase it!Adam Hirschfelder returns after 10 minutes in the green room to talk about his favorite subject, Kevin Costner. Why did Costner leave 'Yellowstone' to make 'Horizon,' a 12-hour Western epic? We don't know. Adam sat through the first three hours in a theater, the second three hours remains unreleased, and the fate of the saga's back end is unknown. Does 'Horizon' do anything differently than 'Centennial,' 'Lonesome Dove,' 'Dances With Wolves,' 'Unforgiven,' 'Deadwood,' or any other modern Western. It does not. Kevin Costner, you have broken Adam Hirschfelder's heart. It's a great episode. Please enjoy!
As the fall election creeps closer, most of us think of our political divide as Red America vs. Blue America. But another way to view our nation’s fractured landscape is to sort people into two camps: idealists and pragmatists. Hosts Richard Kyte and Scott Rada discuss these two political philosophies, the benefits of each and whether one approach is stronger. Links to stories discussed during the podcast Indiana is revealing the real consequences of one-party rule, by Mitch Daniels About the hosts Scott Rada is a digital strategist with Lee Enterprises, and Richard Kyte is the director of the D.B. Howie Klein has been doing a weekly segment on my show for more than a dozen years now. He and I first met some 30+ years ago on Los Angeles where I was doing (really great) music radio and he was President of Reprise Records. When Howie exited the music biz, he turned his energies toward getting real progressives elected to office. He began blogging at DownWithTyranny.com. In 2006, Howie joined forces with Heather "Digby" Parton of Digby's Hullabaloo (digbysblog.net) and John Amato of CrooksandLiars.com. They created the Blue America PAC, enlisting the help of Jacquie Propps (@Jacqrat) to help with the organizational aspects of running a PAC. Jaquie wrote "Fighting The Right Wing Since 2006" for the Blue America blog to reacquaint the blogosphere with Blue America, now in its 18th year. (Read it at https://blueamerica.crooksandliars.co...) We agreed that with the most consequential election season of our lives underway, this would be a good time to get some of the players together to recognize the work they do and shine a spotlight on this year's group of Blue America endorsed candidates. So, joining Howie and me today -- Digby, of course. And Tom Maxwell. Huh? Tom Maxwell is a musician. You probably know him from his time with the Squirrel Nut Zippers. In 2006, Tom contributed a song, "Have You Had Enough?" --sung by Rickie Lee Jones - to one of the first Blue America campaigns, that one to oust the predatory Republican Speaker of the House Denny Hastert. It was a success and the campaign was a hit. And the rest, as they say, is history! They'll all join in at around the 30 minute mark. But we'll start with some news and memories spurred by the news that OJ Simpson has died. Open the floodgates.... --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message

Howie Klein of DownWithTyranny.com has done a weekly segment with me on this show for more than a dozen years now. We mostly talk politics, often music and occasionally other subjects too. And fairly regularly, Howie brings along a guest. It's usually one of the Blue America-endorsed candidates, but today's guest is slightly different. Steven Fulop is the Mayor of Jersey City. Tonight he'll deliver his 11th State of the City address. He's already announced his candidacy for NJ Governor; that election happens in November of 2025. So you might ask, "why today?". Well, that has to do with his endorsement in the race to replace corrupt Senator Bob Menendez (who hasn't yet announced whether he'll run for re-election. I think it's a safe bet to say if he did, he'd lose, badly.). Anyway, Mayor Fulop this week withdrew his endorsement of Tammy Murphy, the wife of NJ's current Democratic Governor Phil Murphy, and threw his support to Congressman Andy Kim. We'll discuss that and a lot more. But we open the show with a big breaking news story for which I must thank AG Merrick Garland! I'm vindicated in my dislike of Apple products as the DOJ filed an antitrust suit against them for their monopolistic practices, especially concerning iPhones! It's about damn time! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message
Howie Klein, the man behind DownWithTyranny.com and the Blue America PAC joins me every Thursday for some plain talk about politics. In election years, like this one, we talk a lot about specific races -- many of them where Blue America has endorsed a candidate. Today, Howie wrote about two races whose primaries are in full swing right now -- the CA Senate seat to replace Dianne Feinstein, and Adam Schiff's current congressional seat that he's vacating to run for the open Senate seat. That's the district Howie lives in. So we'll get the inside scoop on what's going on there. It's also voting time for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.. (For those who don't already know, Howie's career before he moved into progressive politics full-time was in the music industry. His last position was president of Reprise Records!) Howie lamented on the Book of Face about the lousy choices on his ballot... --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message
Do you know any Leftugees from woke California moving to your red state? Maybe you still live in the California People's Republic and are experiencing a record-high cost of living as well as deteriorating city conditions. A former Goldman Sachs executive is sounding the alarm on the simply incomprehensible costs of living that come with residence on the Golden Coast. To live a normal, comfortable life in the Bay Area, one must make at least $280,000 a year, but the average salary in California is around $73,000. Besides just the burdensome and tyrannical social and green initiatives that California forces its residents to foot the bill for, Biden is trying to take the California model nationwide it seems as consumer prices across the board have increased over 17%. Bookmark today's show as a guide to making red states red. First, I discuss the vanity of the presidential race and how we are conflating talk show hosts with actual results. Next, we contrast blue states where Democrats floor the gas pedal on their policies to the red states where we are still struggling to even get a conservative presence on the policy field. We are joined today by an upbeat Andy Roth, who gives us good news about his state freedom caucus networks that are growing in size and influence in many red states. He describes his plan to use state budgets to force through our agenda. He also gives us a preview of some key issues on currency and medical freedom that might give us a chance to free red states from federal tyranny. Learn more about your ad choices. Howie Klein, your host at DownWithTyranny.com and the Blue America PAC is my standing guest every Thursday, today introduces us to the newest Blue America endorsee... Zach Shrewsbury! The Marine veteran who served as a member of the Fleet Anti Terrorism Security Team (FAST) is putting his mind and skills to thwart another threat to democracy: Joe Manchin. But we begin the show with the latest atrocities. Not from Gaza or Israel, but from Maine. Yes Maine, where a deranged individual armed with a weapon of war, gunned down scores of innocent people, killing 19 and injuring at least that many more. When will the madness end? When we get rid of the damn guns.
It's Thursday, and since I tear down my studio after tomorrow's show for the move, this is the last time I'll speak with Howie Klein for a few weeks. Today, he brings along Maebe A. Girl, a Blue America-endorsed candidate who's running to replace Adam Schiff in the House. Schiff is, of course, running for Dianne Feinstein's Senate seat, leaving his congressional seat up for grabs. It also happens to be the district where Howie Klein lives, so this one is personal for him.

Howie Klein introduces us to Congressional Candidate Aaron Regunberg. Aaron Regunberg is the progressive candidate running for Congress in a special election this year in Rhode Island. A former state rep, Aaron led successful fights to pass paid sick days legislation, raise his state's tipped minimum wage for the first time in 20 years, reform the use of solitary confinement, expand harm reduction strategies, and enact new renewable energy programs. He's also a climate lawyer and activist. He's been endorsed by all the good groups out there -- progressive orgs like Blue America, Working Families Party, Our Revolution, and Progressive Democrats of America; unions like the Communications Workers of America and the Association of Flight Attendants; climate groups like Climate Hawks Vote and Rhode Island's 350.org affiliate; and progressive icons like Congressman Jamie Raskin. And his campaign is the best chance for us to score a major progressive pick-up opportunity in 2023. Jesse reiterates his point one last time; he knows the Trump charge is a sham. It doesn't matter though because you still don't have the same rights you think you do in Blue America. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Getting loud with your money and voting with your dollar works. So many companies are disconnected from the average American man and have tunnel vision. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our resident humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson reminds us that the idea of secession did not originate with Marjorie Taylor Greene. It has been tried before. The question we need to ask is whether we are really ready to see what a Red and Blue America would look and act like. The man behind DownwithTyranny.com and the Blue America PAC is back today, as he is every Thursday. But today, Howie Klein is joined by the newest Blue-America endorsed candidate: Jessica Anderson, a former devout Christian conservative who's running as a Berniecrat! to be a Virginia House Delegate from District 71 this year.I'll begin the show with a serious question: Who the fuck is Alex Murdaugh, and why is his murder trial being broadcast live on MSNBC, CNN and a bunch of other channels too? And why isn't governor Death Sentence doing anything to protect this state from the anti-Semites and full blown Nazis who are harassing Jews all over the state?
Restless wanted to have some audio for you while you waited in line to vote today. This will probably be the last time we cover elections per se and all future election specials will discuss God's purpose in election. So this is your last chance at getting us talking anything like politics on Election Day. That does not mean we do not think it is important. No we think God has direction for the civil sphere as well. Let's all start with the Reformed Confessions on the Civil Magistrate. For today we are happy to limit our discussion to the future of the church across the emerging nations in the US. Let us know what you think about Pastor Michael's take on the viability of National Denominations.

The United States has long been admired as the world's most stable and enduring democracy. However, many experts now believe there is a growing and real risk the country could plunge into civil war. Deep political divisions, weakened institutions, racial unrest, allegations of voter fraud, and partisan news coverage are eviscerating social cohesion and political compromise. Red and Blue America are separated by more than ideology; their disagreements are about basic fundamental values that are in irresolvable conflict. The key pillars of a functioning democracy have been destroyed, and the country is courting a period of sustained violent unrest. Others argue that predictions of widespread civil conflict are overblown. Civil Wars require cohesive and large geographical fighting blocs. So called “red” and “blue” states like Texas and California are not nearly as homogenous as pundits claims (46.5% of Texans voted for Joe Biden). Protests, battles, and blockades are a much more likely scenario than a descent into full scale civil war. And finally, the widespread belief that an overwhelming number of Americans support political violence is factually incorrect, and promoting this narrative is dangerous. Those who prophesize the demise of US democracy must remember that conflict can escalate from misperceptions of the intentions of rival groups and stoking fear can lead to actual violence. Arguing for the motion is David Blight, award-winning civil war historian and the Sterling Professor of History and American Studies at Yale University. Arguing against the motion is Akhil Reed Amar, American constitutional and legal scholar and the Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science at Yale University QUOTES: DAVID BLIGHT “Until we find a way out of the straight jacket that the undemocratic Senate and the electoral college holds over us, we are on a collision course with more and more elections like 2020.” AKHIL REED AMAR “While we are deeply divided, in every state there are shades of purple. And that means there is less likely to be the sharp geographic divide of the sort that characterized the 1850s” Sources: CNN, Fox News, CBC, HBO, PBS The host of the Munk Debates is Rudyard Griffiths - @rudyardg. We're now officially in general election season as the last of the primary races have now concluded. I'll ask Howie for an overall post mortem on the primaries, and find out how the Blue America endorsed candidates fared. We may talk about the latest stunt that the FlaDuh governor got in on today, as he loaded about 50 migrants onto two charter planes (that I at least partially paid for), and send them to Martha's Vineyard. There's so much wrong there, and we'll try to unpack it during today's show...
TJ Bryan is a career educator, an author and a runner who continues to run well into her seventies. TJ is a member of a small group of women over 70 who run in marathons. She is a rare African American woman competing at this distance. After TJ retired from a 30-year career in higher education, she became a runner. She was 64 years old at the time--hardly the point at which most people embrace a demanding sport. No one was more surprised than she was when she demonstrated ability as a runner at a wide range of distances. At 78, she has completed 53 races. Even more impressive are her ten marathons and qualifying for the Boston Marathon on eight of these marathons. She is the author of two books, Saving Myself One Step at a Time: A Running Memoir and Black Girl in Red, White, and Blue America. She is currently working on a third one. Prior to retiring, TJ served as a professor, academic administrator, and university chancellor. She has a bachelor's, master's and a PhD in English, Language and Literature. Episode Highlights: How TJ started running at 64. Dealing with injuries and how they tried to derail her running. TJ speaks about her most memorable races. What's on TJ's bucket list? What motivates TJ to run, and some of her fears. Some wise words from TJ. Guest Bio Born on August 21, 1945, T. J. Bryan is a member of a small group of women over 70 who run in marathons. She is a rare African American woman competing at this distance. After T. J. retired from a 30-year career in higher education, she became a runner. She was 64years old at the time--hardly the point at which most people embrace a demanding sport. No one was more surprised than she was when she demonstrated ability as a runner at a wide range of distances. From 2009 to 2019, T. J. completed 53 races. Regularly, she won age-group awards irrespective of the distances—in 5Ks, 10Ks, 15Ks, half marathons, and marathons. Of her races, ten were marathons—eight of which she ran fast enough to qualify for the Boston Marathon. This marathon is one of the most prestigious 26.2-mile races in the world because competitors must qualify by running fast times in earlier marathons and must be accepted before they may register. Initially, T. J. planned to run in the Boston Marathon only once. She changed her mind and registered five times. She ran the race three times. Injury prevented her from competing in the April 2013 and October 2021 versions of the race. T. J. has written about running in two books. In Saving Myself: A Running Memoir, she captures her running journey. The memoir is available through Amazon. Readers praise this book, citing its honesty and its inspirational qualities. In her five-star novel titled Black Girl in Red, White, and Blue America, T. J. devotes several chapters to her main character's late-life running experiences; these sections are based on her own adventures. Before retiring and becoming a runner, T. J. served as a professor, academic administrator, and university chancellor. Her academic credentials include bachelor's, master's, and PhD degrees in English language and literature. Dr. Ward talks about politics and how the country could begin using the same skills couples use in healthy relationships to address its differences.
Senator Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat, warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin “will only stop when we stop him” as he was pressed about whether the United States should send troops to support Ukraine in the ongoing war. GOP Rep Mo Brooks says prime committee chairmanships cost a minimum of $1 million and are paid by special interest groups as “a quid pro quo” for favored legislation. Far-right wing website InfoWars filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas in the face of multiple defamation lawsuits. Red America and Blue America are becoming like two different countries claiming the same territory, with two different versions of the Constitution, economics, and American history.Hosts: Ana Kasparian, Cenk Uygur*** The largest online progressive news show in the world. It's Thursday. Russia's war on Ukraine is entering its second month. The Supreme Court Senate confirmation hearings for Ketanji Brown Jackson concludes today after Republicans on the committee abused the nominee who will likely be the first Black woman to sit on the Supreme Court. Today, Howie introduces us to another Congressional candidate endorsed by Blue America: Matt West. He's running in the brand new 6th district of Oregon and is a real progressive, evidenced by his Blue America endorsement. But there's another interesting element. As Matt told Howie, "I'm also a blockchain/web3/cryptocurrency developer working to change the internet." So, I think we'll get a quick lesson in that part of tech I know virtually nothing about!
On this episode, George Yancey joins Mark Bauerlein to discuss his new book, "One Faith No Longer: The Transformation of Christianity in Red and Blue America."
We're now into the third year of a global pandemic, and the fourth week of Russia's war on Ukraine. It feels like we're living in a one step up, two steps back world on so many fronts. That's my mindset as I prepare for today's show. Our friend in Ukraine, Tanya (which she prefers over Tatiana) made it to the border with Poland, as she messaged me at 6:49 ET this morning. I haven't heard anything from her since. Hopefully that'll change come showtime. Today is Thursday, so Howie Klein is here. We'll address some of the other issues plaguing us, as if Covid and the war weren't enough (they are, but the universe apparently has different ideas), including the lack of subpoenas to members of Congress implicated in the Jan 6 attack on the Capitol. He wrote about it at Down with Tyranny. In that article, he quotes a few of the Blue America-endorsed candidates running in next years midterm elections, including Lucas Kunce. Lucas Kunce is running for an open senate seat in Missouri. He's a Marine veteran having served multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. He'll actually join me in the first half hour of today's show. I'd been trying to get him on to give us his take on the war, our response, and what more we could be doing.
Dr. George Yancey, sociologist and author of the book, One Faith No Longer: The Transformation of Christianity in Red and Blue America, sits down with Tim to discuss Progressive Christianity and the divide between them and Conservative Christianity in terms of politics. Dr. Yancey and Tim discuss his book and what were some of the implications of it. Dr. Yancey explains his background in academia and his switch to studying religion. Tim and Dr. Yancey discuss how he defines Progressive Christianity. They also examine the political landscape since his book was written based on data from 2012. Tim and Dr. Yancey look at the blindspot of Progressive Christians and how to improve relations between them and Conservative Christians. Dr. Yancy discusses his upcoming book.Get One Faith No LongerFollow The New Evangelicals on InstagramSupport the Work We DoAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
