There is this narrative out there that says Black men will not vote for VP KLamala Harris because she is a woman. I have never heard any man speak like that. Brothas are looking at policy as far as I know... And then in California, the California Legislative Black Caucus botched reparations vote advanced after the historic and detailed report delivered by the Reparations Task Force. Some say the bills were flawed. OThers say the bills' author was acting alone - a lone wolf. OThers say the fiscal capacity to administer reparations was not there. Whatever the case, to the everyman, it looks really crazy that our black politicians cant even come together on reparations. But is that the case? What happened? THe people deserve to know. We are privileged to discuss these issues with Dr. Anthony Samad, Executive Director of theMervyn M. Dymally African American Political and Economic Institute at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Also joining us is the Controller of the California Democratic PArty and the Chair of the DSemocratic PArtyh WOmen's Caucus, Carolyn Fowler. This is informative and frank talk.

Welcome to Countdown 2024 ... where election day is just 55 days away and fast approaching. We've got a packed show for you today, with debate reaction coming up from the chair of the California Democratic Party and a Republican National Committee spokeswoman ... after that, we welcome California's senior U.S. Senator Alex Padilla. But first let's take a quick lap around the political world! -The first ... and possibly ONLY debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump ... drew a significantly higher audience than Trump's debate with Joe Biden back in June. It's estimated that nearly 60 million Americans across cable and network channels watched the Vice President and former president square off on ABC. And, interestingly, the major metro markets with the biggest audience shares came in one key swing state: Philadelphia & Pittsburgh were the two cities with the most TV's tuned to the debate last night. -As of now there are no further scheduled debates ... but today Kamala Harris's campaign agreed to debate once more on Fox News. Donald Trump, however, didn't sound too eager to rush back to the debate stage. -A good night got even better for Kamala Harris ... when arguably the biggest music star in the world ... Taylor Swift ... endorsed her campaign for the presidency. Calling her a "steady-handed, gifted leader," Swift made her endorsement in an Instagram post ... that was accompanied by a picture of the pop superstar with her cat ... and signed her post "Childless Cat Lady." Guests on today's COUNTDOWN: -Rusty Hicks is chair of the California Democratic Party -Elizabeth Pipko is the national spokesperson for the Republican National Committee -Sen. Alex Padilla, California's senior U.S. Senator
What a whirlwind of events!! First the debate debacle.... then the Assassination Attempt... then Presidential COVID... then the bombshell announcement of pulling out of the race and endorsing VP Kamala Harris... tens of thousands of black women and men mobilize to raise millions of dollars and to drum up support for this historic moment... We reached out to speak with Carolyn Fowler, Controller of the California democratic Party and Chair of the Women's Caucus for the Party... she shares process and perspective in this important time.
As we've been reporting, Vice President Kamala Harris received a unanimous endorsement from the California Democratic Party last night. With the requisite support from the delegates, Harris looks to be the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. For more, KCBS Radio's Margie Shafer and Eric Thomas were joined by KCBS Insider Phil Matier.
Vice President Kamala Harris seems to be cruising to locking up the Democratic nomination as a replacement for President Joe Biden. Major Democratic leaders are coalescing around her and no one has emerged as a potential challenger at the convention next month. Barely 24 hours after President Biden announced that he would step aside and not seek re-election, endorsing Kamala Harris as his successor, she has raised an astounding amount of money through ActBlue, she's won the endorsements of almost every one of her potential rivals as well as the backing of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, and from coast to coast state delegations and individual delegates to the DNC are pledging their support for her, shifting their allegiance from Joe Biden. Meanwhile, the Trump campaign has already launched a multi-pronged attack on her, accusing her of covering up President Biden's mental condition and tagging her with everything they blamed previously on him, from inflation to illegal immigration. For more on the whirlwind of the last 24 hours and what happens next, KCBS Radio insider Doug Sovern, along with KCBS Radio anchors Bret Burkhart and Patti Reising, were joined by attorney and political strategist Christine Pelosi of San Francisco, a delegate to the Democratic National Convention as a member of the executive committee of the Democratic National Committee, and the longtime chair of the Women's Caucus in the California Democratic Party. This is the State of California.

The California Democratic Party spent the holiday weekend at their reorganizing convention with MAGA at the top of the agenda in hopes to make an impact on the upcoming presidential election. By prioritizing the fight against this rhetoric, they may be overlooking key red districts in California that they could win over. All this happens while the race for Feinstein's seat is heating up - is this the best way to proiritize their political energy? For more on this, Brett Burkhart spoke with Lincoln Mitchell, a political analyst, pundit and writer, teacher at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and writer of the popular Substack "Kibitzing with Lincoln.” He splits his time between New York and his hometown of San Francisco.

We are focusing on California's Central Valley and the changes occurring there affecting the state's political scene. As we noted yesterday, California's Central Valley is so often considered a “battleground” where the issues and demographic changes along with shifts in the overall political landscape tend to be the tipping point in the Golden State. Today we wanted to focus strictly on how the politics of The Valley shape elections and the political landscape for a generation. For more, KCBS Radio's Bret Burkhart , David McCuan, and Patti Reising spoke with Bob Mulholland, Former Senior Advisor to the California Democratic Party and a member of the Democratic National Committee.
Two men who worked at an auto shop in Napa have been sentenced to federal prison for plotting to blow up the California Democratic Party headquarters in Sacramento in 2021. Ian Benjamin Rogers, of Napa, was sentenced to 9 years and 3 years of supervision after he is released. Jarrod Copeland, of Vallejo, was sentenced to 4 1/2 years. He also has 3 years of supervision after he is released. Their case is part of a surge in violent extremist activity the FBI is investigating in Northern California and throughout the nation — and the Bay Area is not immune. As we look back over the year 2022 and forward to next year's elections in 2024, we see many themes shaping up. One recent constant, however, is how deeply blue the State of California is – yet we see voters who are also fiercely independent with pockets of red in other areas of the state. When we consider how the state is changing, where those changes are taking place, and how impactful these changes can be to the state in the near future, it is important to step back and assess what issues and policies will matter over the next year or so. While the Golden State has experienced highs and lows through recent times defined by many as challenges, disasters, Midterm elections, as well as the persistence of COVID, we are also seeing important changes going on in politics here. For more on this, Sonoma State Political Scientist Dr. David McCuan, along with KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart, spoke to the Chair of the California Democratic Party, Rusty Hicks.
This Throwback Thursday episode arrives as final votes are being counted in the 2022 elections in the United States. It's a full circle moment to revisit this powerful conversation from 2017 with community activist, TedX speaker, author of the book ”Black Brown and Political: Get Informed, Get Empowered and Change the Game,” and founder of the Powerhouse Academy, Chandra Brooks. In this conversation those five years ago, Chandra inspired me to get back out and canvas in support of a local candidate, Noelia Corzo, during her first run for school board in my community. Last night, my son Jacob and I, who volunteered together, celebrated with Noelia and her supporters as she received the initial promising results for her run as County Supervisor. If the votes continue in her favor, Noelia will be the first Latina woman Supervisor in our County. I'm honored to reshare this episode and acknowledge all the activists like Chandra and candidates like Noelia who have the courage and commitment to step into the arena, to sit at the table and own their power. Original Show Notes I'm honored to share this episode #32 of the podcast with Chandra Brooks, who has become a friend and a generous thought partner for me in recent months. Chandra is a wife, mother of four, a grandmother, author, entrepreneur and the Northern California Staff Director for SEIU-United Service Workers West. Born and raised in San Jose, CA, she's passionate about civil rights, social justice, and improving voter outcomes and civic engagement in communities of color. She's also an appointed commissioner for Santa Clara County's Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, Chair of the Justice and Advocacy Committee and elected Delegate for The California Democratic Party. In 2017 Chandra launched The SocialPreneur, a purpose driven business that prepares potential candidates to run for political office and mentors women to own their power and leadership within their company, business, and/or community. I reached out to Chandra because I wanted to talk with her the week that she released her new book, “Black, Brown & Political: Get Informed, Get Empowered and Change the Game” which provides easy to navigate tips and inspiration to help women of color get involved in local politics. In this episode, we got to dive deep into the influences which drove Chandra to own her voice and reach her fullest potential. She shares how her mother led her by example to stand up for herself as a woman at a young age and how her uncle unknowingly sparked her to strive for greatness after he doubted her future success when she became pregnant as a teenager. And, we uncover how Chandra's ambition, value for education, and commitment to political leadership helps her inspire generations today, from her 12 year old son to the women she mentors, to sit at the table and own their power. I didn't realize when I scheduled the interview with Chandra that we would be talking the day before the November 2017 elections. The conversation couldn't have come at a better time, and her challenge inspired me to go out and do another round of precinct walking with my 5 year old that afternoon. It was thrilling to wake up the next day to news that so many women of color, including one woman my son and I had supported the day before, had been elected. Chandra, with her new book as a resource, is a powerful force to fuel this growing movement of women stepping into more leadership. I hope this conversation will inspire you, as it has me, to be part of this movement and to more fully own our power to make a difference. This episode dedicated by: Titilayo Tinubu Ali of Own Your Expertise in honor of her mother, Dr. Gloria Bromell Tinubu Topics discussed in this episode: How Chandra intended to release her book a year after the 2016 elections to encourage people to reflect on the decisions they made the year before and realize the importance of being politically involved Chandra's strong, opinionated, and independent mother and how she set an example for Chandra to not be subservient to men How Chandra intentionally teaches her children about social justice issues and about their heritage The lack of access Chandra witnessed to vocational training and education for women in a local prison, compared to the men, and how she's using her leverage as Commissioner to change that. What happened when Chandra's uncle told her “Your life is over, you might as well prepare to be on welfare” after she announced she was pregnant as a teenager. How Chandra's fascination and observation of people in leadership planted seeds for her becoming an entrepreneur The importance of seeking out mentors and coaches and not being afraid to reach out and ask for help Chandra's call to action for us to get more engaged in our local community politics Resources mentioned in this episode: Chandra Brook's Mother on a Quest Feature Chandra's purpose-driven company The SocialPreneur Women Podcasters in Solidarity Black, Brown & Political: Get Informed, Get Empowered and Change the Game! On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court announced its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health. The decision was met with a flood of protests nationwide leading to arrests in some cases of protestors. The decision ended an era where women had a constitutionally protected right to seek an abortion enshrined in the Roe v. Wade decision announced by the Supreme Court on Roe v. Wade (USSCT, 1973). The overturn of Roe v. Wade was a wake up call to progressives and those on the left that the Trump area policies and appointments were now a reality and continued to shape U.S. law and policy long after President Trump departed the White House. In this episode we discuss with James Williams a community activist and organizer and registered nurse the impact of this decision legally, socially and politically and where the left and progressives including women's rights advocates go from here. In this episode we discuss: 1) James' path to becoming an RN and his concerns about the Dobbs decision in light of 20 years of nursing experience 2) James' family history and path towards becoming a Democratic party organizer and leader 3) James' and Jessica's thoughts on the Dobbs decision in terms of women's health and rights in the United States 4) The political factors and forces that led to the appointments to the Supreme Court that allowed Roe v Wade to be overturned in 2022 after almost 50 years as settled law 5) Justice Thomas' reference to unborn fetuses tested for COVID19 vaccines in another decision on the heels of Dobbs decision in a statement deemed to be untrue 6) Where do the left, women's rights advocates and progressives go from here? 7) What are the areas of most concern in the United States in light of the decision such as the high rates of black maternal mortality 8) Whether the same justices who voted to overturn Roe are coming after all substantive due process rights 9) What we can hope for in the future and how those who disagree combat this decision and others to come like it. The drawing of battle lines over themes for this year's midterm elections among both Democrats and Republicans has picked up. The last few weeks have experienced many ups and downs in politics, most recently with another mass shooting and resulting calls for legislation from Sacramento to Washington, D.C. The back-and-forth over what any gun legislation would look like also reflects a clash over spending priorities and other themes we see shaping the midterms. Some Republicans have talked about social and cultural issues, while Democrats have noted the leak of a Supreme Court draft opinion on abortion as a potential election theme. To assess these recent developments, KCBS Radio news anchors Margie Shafer and Kris Ankarlo spoke with Sonoma State political scientist David McCuan and guest Bob Mulholland, former senior advisor to the California Democratic Party and a member of the Democratic National Committee.
The threat of domestic extremist violence is all over the country. Just last weekend, an 18-year old white man drove to a predominantly Black part of Buffalo, New York, and shot 13 people at a grocery store. 10 have died. The Bay Area is not immune to this threat. Last year, two men who worked at an auto shop in Napa were arrested and accused of plotting to blow up the California Democratic Party headquarters in Sacramento. State legislators lay the groundwork for California to become a bastion of reproductive freedom. And this weekend's mass shooting in Buffalo is only the latest in an uptick of domestic extremism. Last year, two Bay Area men were arrested and charged with plotting to blow up the headquarters of the California Democratic Party. Prosecutors say the men planned to launch their attack on or after inauguration day. Reporters: Julie Small and Alex Hall, KQED One person, an adult male, was killed and five others were wounded when a gunman opened fire at a lunch banquet at the Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods in Orange County. The banquet was held by a largely Taiwanese-American congregation. On Saturday, thousands of people showed up in cities across California, in support of reproductive rights. This comes as the U.S. Supreme Court could vote to overturn Roe v. Wade in the coming months.

In 2019, Kipp Mueller, a workers' and civil rights attorney, entered the race for California State Senate District 21, challenging incumbent and then Republican Senate Minority Leader Scott Wilk. Encompassing northern Los Angeles county and parts of the High Desert, SD 21 was a Republican stronghold for over a decade but voter registration has been trending Democratic. A "dogfight" of a campaign, millions of dollars were pumped into the race by both sides. Neck and neck on election night November 2020, it was three weeks before the election was declared for the incumbent. In the end, Kipp Mueller lost by less than 1% of the vote. I recently caught up with Kipp. Having cut his teeth as a 2020 candidate, he continues to practice as a civil rights attorney and was recently elected Region 10 Director of the California Democratic Party. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes in grassroots campaigns, especially for a seat in the California Legislature. We discuss what it's really like to run for office and why even the smallest advocacy group should get involved in electing the next generation of California legislators. This means that The Democratic Party officially recognizes Caste as an essential, immutable part of every Hindu's interpretation of Hinduism. Apart from being clear Hinduphobia, This action demonizes every Hindu in America. This week, Taylor embarks upon an adventure in the company of writer, Dan McCrory, about his journey through life in the company of words - the power of words themselves, and their impact upon life and history, how technology and automation are causing a rapid evolution in the world as we know it, and the impact of the class system and the way it is shifting across the planet. KEY TAKEAWAYS We as humans, and fellow travellers through life, find ourselves connected not by the outward filters that society puts upon us, but the deeper-rooted beliefs and values we hold dear internally. We have developed automation as a tool to make life easier for ourselves, but it has not necessarily been a good thing for society. It has meant the reduction of certain job sectors and skills that in many ways, improved the lives of others. There seems to be a race to the bottom when it comes to countries trying to establish industries. Instead, the better solution would be for specific industries to lock to specific countries. We expect the next generation of the world to evolve in terms of clarity and mental skills, and yet our governments do not seem to wish to invest the necessary funding in securing that future. BEST MOMENTS 'I find myself really moving towards the things that connect us - the things we do find quite magically sometimes' 'I realised just how much of what I went through is still relevant to the next generation' 'Technology is going to change the basic conversation' 'There's a vanishing middle-class in the US and UK, but there's also a burgeoning, growing one in places like China' 'There is an inequity in what a school in the inner city will give as far as funds, as opposed to a school in the suburbs, and we need to even that out' 'People are hoarders and that's a very natural human trait. The way we deal with it is to have robust oversight' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Adventures Of Self Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the.adventures.of.self/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/The.Adventures.of.Self To attend the Creative Masculinity seminar, and to receive the early bird discount, or for more information, go to www.galliant.life/creative-masculinity ABOUT THE GUEST Dan McCrory has done every kind of writing imaginable: advertising, public relations, stories, magazine, articles and books. Recorded live, Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the California Democratic Party convention - Capitol Weekly editor John Howard talks with The Nooner's Scott Lay about the bitter battle over the party chairmanship between establishment Dems and "Berniecrats." Inspired by the candidacy of Bernie Sanders, the left wing of the party surged in activity during the 2016 election and has continued to agitate for progressive causes. More moderate Democrats - often longtime party officials - have caught flak from the base for their more measured approach. Kimberly Ellis, in an upstart effort to replace John Burton as party chair, narrowly lost to 25 year party vet Eric Bauman, who was seen as a shoe in only months ago. John and Scott discuss the atmosphere at the convention and what all this means for the party in California, and DC.

This caucus helped to select delegates to the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. An active member of the California Democratic Party Executive Board, Mary Ellen was an Assembly District Chair from 1986 to 1988, a Regional Director from 1988 to 1991, and a member of the Party's Resolutions Committee from 1993 until 2011, when she was appointed to the Organizational Development Committee.
