Senator Cory Booker stood up yesterday - actually, the day before - an made history. Not only did he break former senator and lifelong racist Strom Thurmond's record for the longest senate speech in history, he also used it to denounce Thurmond's racism and the shameful chapter in American history he tried to prolong. Booker's speech and feats of strength also seems to have breathed new life into dejected Democrats, as he implored each of us to do what we can to save our nation from the ravages of Dump and his army of magats. When Senator Booker ended his historic speech, the special election returns began rolling in. Florida disappointed us again, eventhough the margin of the GOP victory shrunk by half in the two districts that went to the polls. But Wisconsin showed up to save democracy, as the Musk/Dump-endorsed candidate for that state's Supreme Court was soundly defeated by Susan Crawford, with a 10 point victory. For once, Elmo's millions couldn't buy that election...As I'm prepping for today's show, we're awaiting word from the orange man about how much more pain and suffering he'll inflict on the America people today as he declares it "liberation day" and announces yet more tariff's to cripple our economy and our spending power. The always amazing Lisa Graves joins us today in her personal capacity to share her legal expertise on all that's going on, especially the big WIN in Wisconsin, where she lives.

Lisa Graves joins host Ali Muldrow to take stock of the Trump Administration's enactment of Project 2025. The post A Project 2025 Update with Lisa Graves appeared first on WORT-FM 89.9.
My friend Lisa Graves served in the Justice Dept under Attorneys General Janet Reno and John Ashcroft in both the Clinton and GWBush administrations. She's been chief counsel for nominations under then Senate Judiciary Chair Patrick Leahy, and her CV has many more examples of her legal bona fides. These days, Lisa is Executive Director of the watchdog group True North Research, but she appears regularly on this show in her personal capacity as a citizen, not representing any organization. With all of the actions taken by this new horrific administration over the last 25 days, what I understand is that the vast majority of them are not only illegal but unconstitutional. Today, Lisa Graves returns to the show to try to help me make some sense out of what's going on.

As the saying goes, the best laid plans... Lisa Graves, the unofficial legal expert of the Nicole Sandler Show, was supposed to be here today to help us get through the senate confirmation hearings for the would-be cabinet members in this new so-called administration. Unfortunately, Lisa was in a meeting that never ended. Good thing (I think) there was a lot going on today, including Robert Kennedy Jr's confirmation hearing in the Senate Finance Committee. We'll get Lisa back on soon... in the meantime, today's hearing was a tragedy (to almost quote RFK Jr on abortion...)
Lisa Graves is a frequent and one of my favorite guests on the Nicole Sandler Show. Though she appears here regularly in her personal capacity as opposed to speaking for her organization, she has impeccable legal credentials, including time spent as Chief Counsel for Sen Patrick Leahy on the US Senate Judiciary Committee. So she knows her way around senate confirmation hearings. Today's hearings included Pam Bondi, TCF's second choice for Attorney General (after his first, even worse pick Matt Gaetz, withdrew) and Marco Rubio for Secretary of State, among others. An actual ceasefire with a potential end to the war between Israel and Hamas has been announced... I'll have a few details on that too. Plus some news of a personal matter. The bottom line is that the meningioma that was diagnosed with when I had lung cancer has doubled in size. So I have a few doctors appointments in the coming days and weeks to determine what we're dealing with. I promise to keep you posted as we go along.

Many times in the last two years, we have warned about the grim consequences of allowing a wannabe dictator–who attempted to overthrow the government on his way out the door four years ago–back into the White House. What we warned about has happened. We are 45 days away from Donald Trump's second inauguration. And based on who the Mussolini of Queens has picked for his cabinet and staff positions, it looks like he was dead serious about being a dictator on Day One.This week, I will replay clips of some of my past guests talking about American fascism. We must now listen not as a warning, but as a way to be prepared. This episode features clips from interviews with the defense analyst Brynn Tannehill, author of AMERICAN FASCISM; historian Manisha Sinha, author of THE RISE AND FALL OF THE SECOND AMERICAN REPUBLIC; True North Research executive director Lisa Graves; and strategic communications expert Robbie Harris. If you're a regular listener of the show then you're familiar with today's guest, Lisa Graves. In addition to being one of my favorite people, she's also one of the most brilliant. She's currently Director of TrueNorthResearch.org. but appears on this show in her personal capacity offering facts and opinions based on her unimpeachable experience working in the DoJ under AGs Janet Reno and John Ashcroft, in the Senate Judiciary Committee as lead counsel for nominations and so much more. True North Research published a primer on what is now likely the playbook for the D'ump 2.0 administration, better known to us all as Project 2025. It's at Project2025Admin.com and includes a profile of Kash Patel, who D'ump has suggested he'll appoint to lead the FBI. OMG. And the EXTreme Court hear a case this morning -- US vs Skrmetti - about whether Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors violates the US Constitution. (Watch out, this slide is already horribly slippery.)
I feel that I owe you more of an explanation. As you well know by now, I've been having a rough time for the past couple of months, but because I've been such a wreck, I haven't been able to give you the details about how and why I got to such a dark place. It's been a while since my husband David Sloane joined me on the show. But he will be here today. Yes, the election took and continues to take a toll on our collective psyche, but there's much more than that doing on right now, and I believe it's my responsibility to let you know just what has me in this dark place. So I've enlisted David to come in and help me explain. I know that THIS isn't what most people tune into this show for. But I also know, based on your emails and messages from the past few days, that many of you do care. Today's show will hopefully be cathartic for more than a few of us. And for everyone else, the show will continue the rest of the week with Lisa Graves, Howie Klein and emptywheel on Wed, Thu and Fri respectively. As always, thank you for bearing with me... One of our favorite guests here on the Nicole Sandler Show is Lisa Graves. Not just because she's one of the better angels among us, but she's also wicked smart and has the CV to back up her beliefs. These days Lisa Graves works as a governmental watchdog of sorts in her role as Director of True North Research, whose work you should follow at truenorthresearch.org. But she usually appears on my show in her personal capacity as a private citizen with great expertise on all matters pertaining to our Justice system and Dept of Justice, the Senate nominations and confirmation proceedings, and how things are supposed to work in and around Washington DC. Today, we'll get Lisa's take on some late-breaking news that Matt Gaetz has pulled his name from consideration to be the next US Attorney General, though 180's like that are often cause for even more alarm. What other rules has the dictator-elect broken and how many more norms has he shattered? Does she have any advice for those of us who feel as if we're hanging on for dear life by a frayed thread? Lisa Graves is one of the smartest people I know and she doesn't sound an alarm without real justification. Perhaps a group hug is what we need today. We'll do that, virtually anyway...

In the first segment, we learn about the phenomenon of “dark money”: political campaign contributions designed to be difficult or impossible for the public to know about or trace. Mickey talks with media scholar Steve Macek about GOP plans for legislation to make it even easier to keep these contributions secret, as well as the failure of corporate media to energetically report on dark money and the wider issues of what big donors get for their dollars. Then, Project Censored's curriculum development coordinator Mischa Geracoulis guest co-hosts the show to address the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025, the conservative wish list for a second Trump term. Mischa speaks with Lisa Graves, who specifically addresses how education and the media landscape would be changed if Project 2025 is actually implemented. GUESTS Steve Macek is a professor of communications and media studies at North Central College in Illinois. He's also the co-coordinator, with Andy Lee Roth, of Project Censored's Campus Affiliates Program. Steve was also one of the editors of the recent book Censorship, Digital Media, and the Global Crackdown on Freedom of Expression (Peter Lang, 2024). Lisa Graves is the founder and executive director of True North Research, a national investigative watchdog group. Trying to remember despair is not an option. It seems that sanity is failing all around us, but I'm trying to stay positive and believe that good will win out over evil. Evil has been on display all week, from a rally in PA to a convention hall in Milwaukee. The Democratic circular firing squad is doing what they know how to do best, though I refuse to give in to the defeatist self-fulfilling prophesy they're pushing. The Nicole Sandler Show's unofficial legal expert Lisa Graves returns, this time as the head of the watchdog organization who's informed us about the bad guys... they're just launching a new site to help us inform everyone about what the Republicans are planning should they retake power. Check out Project2025admin.com/faq ... She'll tell us to be afraid, and to fight back.
Political Scientist, Election Strategist and author of the must-read book, Hit 'Em Where It Hurts: How to Save Democracy by Beating Republicans at their Own Game, Rachel Bitecofer returns to the show today to tell Democrats how to win. All we need to do is listen to her and do what she suggests! Take notes.. We got this! Tomorrow, Lisa Graves returns to the show to tell us about the new project she's working on, Project 2025 Administration.
The Republicans always go back to the teleprompter. They claim that Joe Biden can't speak without one, but won't admit that they use them too. And when they fail? They got nothing. Seriously. The first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee was replete with Teleprompter troubles. We'll share a few laughs at their expense,. And because the media rarely shows a Joe Biden rally or speech, we will! President Biden is set to speak to an NAACP conference in Las Vegas while we're on the air, so we'll carry the feed (finally found one that had decent sound, though it took a few tries). Also, I promised a link to the new expose that Lisa Graves' organization True North Research has been working on. It's called Project 2025 Administration. She'll be here Thursday to tell us all about it, but in the meantime, you can read some of it for yourself!
In this final (bonus) episode of Grave Injustice, Lisa Graves is joined by three top legal experts to discuss the latest term of the U.S. Supreme Court which saw the court's six right-wing appointees shelter Trump for his crimes and bestow new, almost king-like powers on the executive, uphold flagrant racial gerrymandering, and upend a long-standing legal doctrine that has major implications for the federal government's authority in keeping our air and water clean, our food and drugs safe, our environment protected, and so much more. Dahlia Lithwick, who covers the courts for Slate magazine and hosts the podcast Amicus; Michael Podhorzer, senior advisor to the AFL-CIO, Founder of the Analyst Institute and the Research Collaborative, and author of the Substack “Weekend Reading;" and Alex Aronson, director of the legal advocacy organization Court Accountability and former chief counsel to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse; all join Lisa to share their insights on the term and the state of the US judiciary. Monday's jarring Supreme Court decision granting former President Donald Trump (and going forward, any U.S. President) was met with condemnation far and wide, and left me wondering how Republicans will sell voters on a second Trump presidency that'll see him more restrained when A. they didn't restrain him the first time and B. now he can do as he wishes with almost no repercussions to worry about, judicially. It's not like he isn't teetering on the borderline of "violent rhetoric" while President before, mind you. The dissenters include my guest, attorney Marshall H. Tanick, who's scathing op-ed appeared at GeorgiaRecorder.com yesterday. Meanwhile, Lisa Graves, host of the "Grave Injustice" podcast, appeared on the Daily Beast's "The New Abnormal" podcast to claim that Chief Justice John Robers will go down as "one of the worst chief justices" in American history - and that was nearly six weeks ago. I shared her scathing rebuke. As for Georgia's case against Trump? Who knows, but this ruling does present the Fulton County district attorneys' office new challenges, for sure. I eavesdropped on some insights given by Georgia State University professor Anthony M. Kreis on both "Closer Look" on WABE-FM and the AJC's "Politically Georgia" podcast yesterday Had to do that because I can't (yet) convince him to spare five minutes for my show (yet). Eh, he's busy and wildly popular for cable news and the big broadcasters, so I'll cut him some slack.
Lisa Graves has graciously agreed to join us again today to help us wade through this ultimate travesty of justice by the high court that is no longer "supreme". Extreme is more fitting.Lisa Graves has unimpeachable legal bona-fides. Among other positions during her career, she served under two US Attorneys General -- Janet Reno during the Clinton administration and John Ashcroft during the W Bush regime. She was chief counsel for nominations under Chair Patrick Leahy on the Senate Judiciary Committee, so was charged with vetting Supreme Court nominees. I'm always grateful when Lisa brings her expertise here to help us try to figure out wtf is going on. And sadly, that's the only way I can describe what's going on now in the wake of the Extreme Court's gutting of the Chevron deference and conferring "absolute immunity" -- a concept that hadn't existed before yesterday's decision. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message

What a day! The Extreme Supremes this morning handed down four more decisions out of the dozen or so still tba... and then signaled that they will not get it all done by the official end of the term tomorrow. There will be at least one more decision day in July. We'll know more about that tomorrow. Lisa Graves, the unofficial legal expert of the Nicole Sandler Show, returns for the first half of the show today to talk SCOTUS, which we somehow didn't get to yesterday. We'll discuss both the two and sneak peek at a third from yesterday, plus three more from this morning (and the one we got a look at yesterday), with some horrific consequences playing out. With the Extreme Court allegedly poised to hand down the final decisions for this term over the next two days, we're joined again by the Nicole Sandler Show's unofficial legal expert Lisa Graves. I had hoped that this morning's announcements would include more than the two they trickled out... and in a sense it did. Apparently accidentally, someone posted a draft of one of the still outstanding decisions-- this one in Idaho vs US. They quickly took it down, but not before Bloomberg News got it, converted it to pdf form and posted it online... Julian Assange is a free man in Australia again, primary upsets abound and Aileen Cannon is still somehow presiding over a clusterfuck of Trump's criminal trial for stealing and hiding classified documents. We'll talk about all of that and more... PLUS we'll tell you about Lisa's new podcast "GRAVE INJUSTICE"!! **Postscript: Best laid plans and all that. Lisa and I didn't get to SCOTUS or Assange at all, but still covered some important territory. She'll be back tomorrow for the first half hour leading up to Howie Klein. Hopefully tomorrow morning, the Extremes will have given us more of the decisions we're waiting for. One more thing, there was quite a bit of disagreement in the YouTube chat during the show about my comments regarding Jamal Bowman and why he was defeated in yesterday's primary. I've been highly critical of the one-sided coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. But I happened to see this article today about why Bowman lost, and they sum it up perfectly. Trump v. The United States is about presidential immunity — the idea that a president is immune from prosecution for their actions as president even after they leave office. The Supreme Court of the United States is weighing whether or not the president can get away with say…inciting a violent insurrection or conspiring to overturn his own presidential election. Listen to understand why even hearing this case is a gift to the criminally convicted, twice impeached former president, Donald J. Trump, and what it would mean for the Supreme Court to even partially accept his lawyer's argument of “absolute immunity."Glenn Kirschner, former US prosecutor, MSNBC/NBC legal analyst and host of Justice Matters; and Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United and Let America Vote, join Lisa Graves for this episode. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court heard a case that, on its face, is about fishermen who disagree with a government fee. But behind it is a group of billionaires led by one of the richest men in America. This episode will explain how they propped up this case and why, if the Supreme Court takes their bait, it could destroy a foundational legal doctrine that helps government agencies keep giant corporations in check. ur favorite legal expert Lisa Graves returns to the show to bring some clarity to the surreal legal news we've been dealing with the the past few weeks. First, there's the Trump trial - the one of four criminal cases that he should be standing trial for. Closing arguments were delivered yesterday; the judge gave the jury instructions this morning and the first day of deliberations are done. Of course TFG went out to the microphones and continued his normal practice of lying about everything. The second big story that's broken over the past few weeks involved Supreme Court *justice* Samuel Alito. We now know that he and his wife (he blames his wife, whatta guy!) have flown flags supporting the insurrection and Trump at their VA home and their beach home, yet he refuses to recuse himself from any case dealing with Jan 6. Ahead of the Supreme Court handing down decisions on several critical cases this summer, a new limited series podcast breaks down what's at stake. Hosted by legal expert Lisa Graves, the series explains the cases, examines how they connect to larger attacks on rights and freedoms, and exposes the decades-long right-wing capture of the Supreme Court. The podcast is produced by pro-democracy digital news network COURIER and Court Accountability, a judicial research and advocacy organization. Each episode will do a deep dive on a different issue and the relevant cases before the court, including reproductive rights (FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine), voting rights (Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP), gun violence prevention (United States v. Rahimi), and more. Host Lisa Graves, one of the nation's foremost experts in exposing how special interests distort public policy, brings her extensive knowledge to the series. Graves is the founder and Executive Director of True North, a national investigative watchdog group that shines a bright light on the dark money fueling regressive agendas targeting vital institutions in our republic, such as our courts.Subscribe to this limited series wherever you get your podcasts including Apple and Spotify. I'm always honored when Lisa Graves joins me to lend her legal expertise to the discussion about the trials and tribulations of TFG and, of course, the machinations of the once Supreme, now Extreme, Court. Lisa has the bona fides... she served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Policy Development/Legal Policy at the U.S. Department of Justice under Attorneys General Janet Reno and John Ashcroft, Chief Counsel for Nominations for Senator Patrick Leahy on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Deputy Chief of the Article III Judges Division of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts with oversight of the Financial Disclosure Office and more, and as an adjunct law professor at George Washington University Law School. She also worked as the Senior Legislative Strategist for the ACLU on national security and civil liberties, and held other posts. Although Lisa generously shares her knowledge with us on this show, she does so in her capacity as a private citizen. These days, her day job is as the founder and Executive Director of True North Research, a national investigative watchdog group that works with journalists and other researchers to shine a bright light on the dark money fueling regressive agendas targeting vital institutions in our republic, such as our courts and public schools. Graves is one of the nation's foremost experts in exposing how special interests distort public policy and try to thwart the public's interest in a thriving and inclusive democracy and to impede measures to protect our environment and mitigate climate change. I don't run through her CV and experience as often as I should when she's on the show, so I wanted to put it down in writing... Today, Lisa joins me to talk about the beginning of the first-ever criminal trial of a former president, about that former guy's inability to follow the most basic rules of decorum inside a court of law (or anywhere else for that matter), David Pecker's testimony that proves Trump talks about himself when he decries "FAKE NEWS" and more. On the SCOTUS front, tomorrow - the final day they'll hear arguments this term - they'll hear Trump's farce of a claim that he enjoys "absolute immunity" as a former president... of course today, the antediluvian men on the court showed that they believe they should control every aspect of a woman's life, including her health care. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message

If you're thinking that in the US, all may theoretically be created equal, but we're sure not treated equally under the law. It's a fact that those with money, fame and power get away with (almost) murder. And if Donald Trump did, indeed, shoot someone on Fifth Avenue? Well, let's just say the jury's still out on that one. And if TFG has any say, the trial would be perpetually delayed. Of course I have a million questions for Lisa Graves, the unofficial legal expert of the Nicole Sandler Show, having to do with Teflon Don. But wait, there's more... There's our Supreme Extreme Court, where ethics apparently aren't a requirement to be a Justice. And there's an organization made up of Republican Attorneys General (RAGA) who've fully transitioned from public servants who serve the law to more magats perverting the law to support TFG. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message
It's not quite red-yarn-on-a-corkboard, but given how often we've been thinking about the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) over the years, it may as well be. The group has become a vital component of the conservative legal movement, with pay-to-play access afforded to corporate donors to boot. Despite all the money changing hands and obvious conflicts of interest, few have heard of them - and that's very intentional. This week we're joined by Lisa Graves of True North Research to talk about how an organization representing the chief legal officers in half the states in the union has become a national policy juggernaut, pushing legislation and litigation to assist polluters, harm women and LGBTQ families, torment immigrants and even steal elections, all absent any significant oversight or consequences. In this week's bonus plus segment, Slate's very own Mark Joseph Stern joins to discuss coverage of the oral arguments in the mifepristone case (including the hugely significant takeaway most of the analysis missed), and the reasons Neil Gorsuch hates nationwide injunctions. And finally, following on from last week, thinking about the language we use to describe first trimester abortions. Sign up for Slate Plus now to listen and support our show. Many people have never heard of the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC – but for 50 years, the group has been the driving force behind some of the most extreme policies in this country. Behind closed doors, ALEC brings corporate lobbyists and state politicians together to draft and vote on model bills that aim to free corporations from regulations, regardless of the impacts on people and the planet. Labor law, environmental law, health and safety, voting — no cause is off-limits. Our guests say ALEC and its wealthy pool of funders are a real threat, but there are ways to take action and progress has already been made. In 2023, a diverse coalition of groups, including Greenpeace, Color of Change, the Center for Media and Democracy and more, is calling out the anti-democratic impact of ALEC by using the hashtag #50YearsOfHarm. Congressman Ro Khanna of California's 17th Congressional District, a leading progressive in the House, and Lisa Graves, Executive Director of True North Research and President of the Center for Media and Democracy, two of the preeminent national watchdog groups investigating dark money, join Laura Flanders to unpack it all. And in her closing commentary Laura fills us in on the other side of the story in state houses: the Democrats' have their own project in place these days. But is it any match for ALEC?Guests:• Lisa Graves: President of the Board, Center for Media & Democracy; Executive Director, True North Research• Ro Khanna: Congressman California's 17th District Full Episode Notes are located HERE.
