Kyle Jones is joined by Dr. Sabine Hazan and Dr. Hugh Beatty to explore the powerful connection between gut health and overall immunity. Dr. Hazan shares her journey from traditional GI practice and pharmaceutical clinical trials to becoming a leading voice in microbiome research during the COVID-19 pandemic. They discuss the critical role of bifidobacteria — the beneficial gut bacteria she believes are central to immune resilience — and her "Save the Bif" movement to raise awareness about their dramatic decline in modern populations. The conversation covers microbiome diversity, immune response, severe COVID, autism, autoimmune disease, and long COVID, as well as the overuse of antibiotics, probiotics, and gut "cleanses." This episode challenges conventional thinking and highlights the future of personalized, microbiome-centered medicine, and why protecting your gut, and "saving the bif," may be key to protecting your health.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Some artists find a sound or a look. Others find the truth. Bif Naked found both. In this moving episode of Chatter that Matters, I sit down with the iconic Juno Award-winning artist and activist Bif Naked to unpack "I am who I am." Born in New Delhi. Adopted. Raised across oceans, finding love in words and music. At 21, Bif met her birth mother, a moment that brought her story full circle. But identity is not formed only in comfort. At 36, Bif was diagnosed with breast cancer. Two years later, she suffered a stroke. Those chapters did not silence her. They fed her poetry and clarified what mattered. I loved every second of my time with Bif Naked. We discuss punk, poetry, feminism, and the discipline behind her philosophy: "save the rage for the stage." There is wisdom in that line. Choose where your energy goes. Do not let the noise of the world steal your voice. Channel it. Own it. If you have ever felt different, silenced or enraged. If you have ever had to rebuild or renew. If you believe identity is something you own, not something assigned. This conversation is for you. (And her music and passion roars throughout)

In this episode, we bring you a riveting Q&A session with GeoGirl Dr. Rachel Phillips and Dr. Joshua Davies, both experts in geology who explore the mysterious world of banded iron formations (BIFs). We dive deep into what BIFs are, when they formed, and their significance. Josh unpacks the debated origins of these rocks, discussing how they may be the most hotly contested rocks in the geological world due to our limited understanding of their formation process, despite their voluminous presence on Earth. We touch on how BIF layers represent cycles influenced by Milankovitch cycles, and whether microbial activity plays a role in their formation. Josh explains that while BIFs peters out around 1.8 billion years ago, there are unique conditions and debates on secondary processes that impact our current understanding. We humorously explore modern analogs, like weird anoxic lakes, and laugh about how our Earth would need a huge meteorite impact to revert to BIF-forming conditions—a scenario we're not quite rooting for! Finally, we ponder the possibility of extraterrestrial BIFs, symbolizing our endless curiosity about space and deep time. This one's a dense, iron-packed dive for sure—just like BIFs!Download the CampGeo app now at this link. Send Us a Message (include your contact info if you'd like a reply)Wondering if a sustainable divorce coaching practice is really possible—or how to build one without burning out or getting lost in theory? We sit down with DCA-certified coach Lyerly Spongberg to unpack the exact steps she took to turn rigorous ADR training, mentor feedback, and a growth mindset into steady client results and a business with clear momentum. We start with the decision point: moving from life coaching to a dispute resolution lens that gives clients structure, calms chaos, and prepares them for mediation and attorney meetings. Lyerly shares how she internalized DCA frameworks, leaned into mentor coaching, and used tools like strategic empathy, EAR statements, BIF responses, and nonviolent communication to help clients communicate clearly and avoid escalation. A memorable client story shows how planning the divorce conversation—when, where, and how—can transform years of hesitation into a grounded, empowered step forward. Then we zoom out to the practice model. Lyerly explains the business choices that created traction: SMART goals, consistent educational content, intentional networking, and advanced training in high conflict, co-parenting, and trauma-informed coercive control. We talk about pre-mediation coaching as a game-changer for better outcomes, collaboration with legal and mediation professionals, and how these learnable skills carry into co-parenting and future relationships. Finally, we explore scalable offerings—downloadable guides, professional talks, local hubs, and group coaching—that meet clients where they are and build sustainable visibility. If you're building or refining a divorce coaching practice, you'll leave with a roadmap you can use: anchor your work in ADR, practice until the tools become second nature, design services that fit your strengths, and measure success by calmer conversations and healthier outcomes for families. Send us a textPrivate equity, private debt – private markets are absolutely the flavour of the day. Yet, despite the headlines and eye-catching numbers, very little discussion is taking place about governance in this context. In this podcast, Dr Sabine Dembkowski, Founder and Managing Partner, is joined by Dr Eelco Fiole. He has more than 30 years of international finance experience, including two decades as Non-Executive Director, CFO, and CEO in alternative investments with teams in Zurich, London, New York, and Singapore. He also holds more than eight advanced degrees and is a true polymath with special expertise in investment governance.“Private market investing comes with a lot of issues.“Eelco reports that over the next five years, private markets are expected to double to $30 trillion USD. Private investors now invest alongside traditional institutions. Yet serious issues remain, including complex structures, valuation challenges, opacity, layers of leverage, and enormous asymmetries of information. “Governance is work, and when that work is being done, trust also develops.”To Eelco, governance is a key factor in creating trust for LPs and GPs. Both must contribute to building a solid governance framework. For LPs, remember that greed is not a strategy. Instead, use governance structures as a filtering tool to address issues of valuation, transparency, and conflicts of interest. For GPs, good governance helps attract capital. Eelco noticed that the smartest GPs use well-structured governance agreements to differentiate themselves, back up big promises, and showcase how they plan to protect investors. “It's all about incentives.“In Eelco's experience, many trust-based issues can be resolved by examining the incentives at play. Who is getting paid, when are they being paid, and how are those payments structured? Following the money and understanding who benefits in various scenarios is key to effective governance. On a practical level, this means building desired behaviours into the documentation. “Every investment is situational.“Eelco feels every investment has its own unique characteristics. As a result, “off the shelf” legal documents may not be sufficient. Custom-crafted or heavily adapted documents that cover the legal and economic variations of the investment, investment team, and market are key. The same is true for individuals who want a seat at the table. Private markets are highly specialised and nuanced. Only individuals who can add value in specific ways will be welcomed. “If I cannot have proper representation of the interest, then I'm not going to do it.” Eelco sees many cases where things go wrong, where highly concentrated investors are excluded, or where LP committees have no power. He is not calling for regulators to step in, but for boards to thoughtfully use governance structures to create checks and balances. The three top takeaways from our conversation for effective boards are:1. Governance is work.2. For GPs, understand the mechanics of trust and its role in attracting capital. 3. Standard legal documentation is not enough. You must build in your own situationally appropriate models into the agreements.Join The Better Boards Community - info@bIf you would like to become part of the Better Boards community, learn about our distinctive approach and explore opportunities to work with us or contribute to The Better Boards podcast series, get in touch at info@better-boards.com. He is a fourth-generation cattleman whose first experiences with cattle trace back to helping with his grandfather's commercial Hereford cows in central Georgia as a child. By age twelve Josh had purchased his first heifer, began building his own herd and became a self-professed cattle nerd. After graduating with honors from Berry College ('95) in northwest Georgia with a degree in Animal Science, Josh worked in private industry and grew his cattle herd, while also serving as a volunteer leader in several county, state and national ag and cattle organizations. In 2009 Josh took the opportunity to move from a volunteer leader role to full time industry service and joined the Georgia Cattlemen's Association and Georgia Beef Board as Executive Vice President, serving there until joining NCBA in 2014. In his current role as Sr. Executive Director – Producer Education & Sustainability with NCBA, Josh and his team are working to capitalize on the rich histories of the Beef Quality Assurance, Masters of Beef Advocacy, Environmental Stewardship Award Program, Stockmanship & Stewardship, and Cattlemen's College programs while moving these initiatives forward to deliver even greater value to NCBA members and the cattle industry. New programs like the Rancher's Resilience Grant are a true passion for Josh and the team – finding ways to empower even more producers to participate in impactful educational opportunities. In addition to overseeing numerous programs, Josh provides leadership for NCBA's policy funded sustainability efforts and supports beef checkoff funded efforts associated with sustainable cattle production. Josh was recently awarded the Continuing Service Award by the Beef Improvement Federation for his passionate service to BIF over the past decade. MONSTER PARTY WANTS TO DECK YOU IN YOUR HALLS! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD invite you once again to experience a series of cage matches in our audio octagon. But this time, these fights of fancy have a seasonal sting! Can your headphone-bruised cauliflower ears stand the Christmassy carnage that is… WHO WOULD WIN? VOL. 8: THE WINTER EDITION!!! If this is your first time attending a WHO WOULD WIN? event, the rules are quite simple: We choose horror/sci-fi/fantasy characters to enter a room, stage a fictitious battle for their lives and debate who would leave the victor. It's pretty much the type of game you used to play in the schoolyard, only this one doesn't leave you with dodgeball-induced internal injuries. We've done many of these episodes in the past, and they're always a ton of fun. But for this round, we decided that the timing necessitated a winter twist. We're including at least one character from a holiday-themed film, TV show, book, or legend for each of our fictional bouts. Expect an exotic range of fruitcake-fueled fighters plucked from Star Wars, Rankin Bass, Disney Animation, The Peanuts, The Twilight Zone, cult horror, holiday folklore, and more! Who will win? Who will lose? And how do you get elf blood out of a carpet? Joining us to cheer on these winter wonderland warriors, is a return guest who is also a MONSTER PARTY benefactor! He's a RONDO AWARD-WINNING writer, producer, actor, host, podcaster, and voice artist, who also happens to be the founder of BIF! BANG POW! TOYS! So, if you are a PATREON member who has ever ordered merch, you probably own something he helped create. Please welcome back the non-stop delight that is… JASON LENZI! Their first one-shot, The Manchurian, carries an irresistible premise steered expertly by Pornsak Pichetshoteand Terry Dodson. Published by Image Comics, The Manchurian lands in comic book stores on September 25th (its FOC is September 2nd). The elevator pitch champions a Chinese James Bond. Look at the header image above. Terry and Rachel Dodson are going full-Daniel Craig in Casino Royale or Ursula Andress in Dr. No. We've read the first issue and can confirm fashion, sex, violence, and unconquerable charisma. However, beyond the Bond basics, The Manchurian follows a perspective never explored by 007: corporate espionage as handled by Chinese Communist agents. Just as all of us were recovering from San Diego Comic-Con, we spoke with Pornsak Pichetshote and Terry Dodson about The Horizon Experiment, their twist on the spy sub-genre, and the four other radical one-shots riding on their heels. We discuss the pilot program The Horizon Experiment employs and how it's not really different from how comics always operate. We chat about capturing the Bond vibe without being chained to it and how competition amongst peers is as much a trap as anything else. Once upon a time, cartoonist JP Ahonen fell out of love with his art. He'd reached a wall. It was burnout. He'd lost the joy found in creation. Then, he just started to doodle, and an Inktober project became a runaway success. Belzebubs, the saga of a black metal family, significantly inspired by Calvin and Hobbes, sprung from his brain, and there is no stuffing it back in. These odd little outsiders reignited something inside Ahonen, but more importantly, Belzebubs ignited something in its readers. The audience appeared quickly and grew even faster. The webcomic has crossed over into other mediums and will soon be an animated series. Top Shelf Productions published two beautifully bound hardcovers, and we've latched onto them, proclaiming ourselves as rabid groupies. Every San Diego Comic-Con introduces us to some new passion; this year, it's Belzebubs. After devouring the two hardcovers, inside the Hilton Bayfront, we eagerly chatted with JP Ahonen about his Belzebubs origins. We discuss how these characters came to him at a critical moment in his life and taught him to love comics again. And then, they took on a life of their own. Now, it's your turn to join the cult. In a few short years, James Tynion IV has become a beacon within comics. When you walk into a shop, you don't have to look long before you stumble upon one of his comics. He's seemingly everywhere, spreading beyond the four color realm, and no matter the title he's attached to, it's worth a perusal. Back in July, at San Diego Comic-Con, we sat down with Tynion inside the Dark Horse Comics booth to discuss the unique collaborative process that birthed The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos. The conversation serves as a springboard to more significant topics, primarily the mission of his Tiny Onion label. How does Tynion feel about the industry today, and where would he like to see it go in the future? We discuss Christopher Chaos' origins, his creative relationship with Tate Brombal and Isaac Goodhart, and what this book offers that seemingly similar stories don't. We talk about his recent short film Room Service and why he was compelled to make it alongside Elsa Charretier and others. James Tynion IV is a profoundly passionate artist who'd rather speed up than slow down. At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, the family was at the forefront of DC creators' minds. We couldn't escape the topic when discussing superheroics. Plus, we've been pretty anxious on the podcast, contemplating the ramifications of city saviors placing their loved ones above the citizens of Gotham City and Metropolis. Does the person on the street want Superman to have a son? A wife? A cousin? Thankfully, we can corner Mark Waid and Mariko Tamaki at the DC booth and force them to process our ridiculous worries. In October, Mark Waid and Chris Samnee return to the early days of Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson in Batman and Robin: Year One. The twelve-issue maxi-series promises to delve into their unique relationship, revealing how Bruce Wayne learned to parent while keeping Joker behind bars. During the same month, Waid and Mariko Tamaki will share Action Comics as the Superman ongoing goes weekly. Waid, alongside artist Clayton Henry, will focus on Kal-El's problems post-Absolute Power while Mariko Tamaki and artist Skler Partridge continue their deep dive into Supergirl's inner life. For the first half of today's episode, we speak with Mark Waid two-on-one, digging into Bruce and Dick's getting-to-know-you phase. We discuss Bruce's lack of familial role models, his inability or unwillingness to see Alfred as a father, and how he wanted Absolute Power to speak to the moment. In the back half, we have both Mark Waid and Mariko Tamaki on our microphone. We then focus on the Superman family, paying particular attention to Supergirl and the secrets Tamaki is unveiling to her readers. The first issue of Batman and Robin: Year One lands in comic shops on October October 16th. Mark Waid and Mariko Tamaki join Action Comics on issue 1070, which arrives on October 9th.
