Mark Skipper is equal parts talented artist and climate activist. And just how is he bridging those two passions together? Through his project, Faces of Rebellion, where he sits down with people making a difference in the world to not just sketch and draw them, but also to connect with them and share their stories. Literally, he combines their likeness with their mission, all on one glorious single piece of paper. We chat about where he finds his inspiration, how art has always had a profound effect on him, and how every single one of us can make change happen, and in turn, make the planet a better place, simply by using our individual talent, whatever it may be. If you question whether you can make a difference, you very well may find the answer in this oh-so-good conversation (spoiler alert: you can choose to make change happen anytime you want, exactly where you are - it really is that simple). This is part one of our conversation. ________________________________ Steve is busy at work on the third book in his cozy mystery series, THE DOG WALKING DETECTIVES. Send us a textOn Friday, April 11, over 300 high school students from across northeast Ohio gathered for the 2025 NEO Youth Climate Summit, hosted by Laurel School and Global Shapers Cleveland. The event brought students together to discuss and collaborate on solutions for climate change, sustainability, and environmental justice. The summit was kicked off with a keynote address by a young climate activist, Sage Lenier. Sage was honored by TIME Magazine as a 2023 Next Generation Leader. She started teaching about climate change while still a student at UC Berkeley and has since founded her own non-profit, Sustainable and Just Future. In this episode, we share her message to the students. Hear what one Gen Z'er has to say to young environmental leaders about meeting the future with excitement and innovative solutions. And hear from Angela Yeager, a teacher whose students in Laurel School's Environmental Justice Semester planned the event. Organizers called it a "beaming light for young people demanding change in the face of the climate crisis." And it was. This week the world has come together to mourn the death of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, age 88. As speculation mounts about who will replace him, and whether they will be a reformer or traditionalist, we want to reflect on Pope France's contribution to the climate movement and the change he drove around the world, not just across the 1.4 billion Catholics he led, but beyond to other religions and cultures too. Pope Francis was an unapologetic environmental advocate, and he used his papacy to raise awareness about the critical need to curb greenhouse gas emissions. While many believed he shouldn't discuss it, because it was considered ‘political,' the Pope said that climate change was a spiritual issue, and he clearly laid out the consequences of not tackling it in his 2015 “Laudato Si” - the first-ever papal encyclical focused solely on the environment. In it, he discussed climate change, loss of biodiversity to water scarcity, as well as societal breakdown, and how the poorest would suffer the most. A follow-up “Laudato Si” was published in 2023, and in this, Pope Francis called for a broad change in the “irresponsible lifestyle connected with the Western model.” So, we must ask - did we listen? Because global emissions have kept rising, including record emissions released in 2024. One positive sign of the Pope's contribution is environmental leaders from around the world acknowledging the impact he had in waking the world up to the dangers we face, leaving a legacy firmly entrenched in the climate movement. The Pope was a climate activist. We had two very special guests join us. Clare Westwood, who is a powerhouse in the climate movement, and regional director of the Roman Catholic Episcopal Commission for Creation Justice of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, and the Co-Founder and Executive Chair of Laudato Si' Asia – a Coalition for Culture of Care, Resilience and Ecological Justice (LSIA-CAREJ). Dr Lorna Gold is the Executive Director of the Laudato Sì Movement. Lorna's focus is on supporting the team at a time of significant change, amplifying the intersection of faith and environmental stewardship. Since 2015, LSM's team's dedication has cultivated a global network advancing ecological conversion. Dr Gold's tenure as Interim CEO at FaithInvest fortified her resolve to align faith-based investments with environmental and social sustainability, pioneering strategies that resonate with shared values for a healthier planet. We'll be discussing the Pope's legacy and a lot more of the environmental news we think you should be aware of, including the economic and geopolitical situation the world is currently in, so come and join us, 25th April, 8am UK, 2pm TH, 3pm SG, 6pm AEST. Climate Courage is a livestream, held every two weeks and is co-hosted by Andrea T Edwards, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato. On the show, we cover critical topics across the full spectrum of the polycrisis, in everyday language, and we go big picture on the climate crisis, while also drilling down and focusing on the actions we can all take to be part of the solution. Whether individual action, community action, or national/global action - every single one of us can be part of ensuring a live-able future for our children and grandchildren. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is part 4 of an April-long miniseries curated by Pip entitled 'Climate Solutions For Realists'.Our fourth guest is climate activist ROSIE HAMPTON.Hopefully by now, if you've caught all four of the episodes in this miniseries (which will have slotted in seamlessly into your regularly scheduled listening), you'll have heard about how climate action - while not the most uplifting subject - can be a very positive and accessible universe to engage with. At times of course the whole subject can seem intimidating as, for sure, individually we can't solve this one. BUT - when we work together and realise the powers we do have, and work with what we can in the realms of our imediate surroundings first, there is a huge amount to be positive and hopeful for. This episode with Rosie will surely add to that feeling, and among so much more you'll hear how she found herself in this area and how career paths merged and blended, how to work with fossil fuel companies in a way which can make things better for the world in general as well as the employees, the idea of death by a million paper cuts when it comes to greedy and careless corporations, being strategic with movements and working with available skills and potential, the many shades of community action, and how ultimately we all get better through linking in our communities. As always, get a notebook or open the notes app, you'll do well to scribble some bits down! How can climate activists be more successful in 2025? And where have they gone wrong? Kumi Naidoo has a storied career as an activist. At just 15 years old, he started out as an anti-apartheid campaigner and organiser in South Africa, before fleeing the country and attending Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, where he received a PhD for his research into the resistance movement in South Africa. After Nelson Mandela was freed, he returned home to help organise Mandela's campaign to become President, and later became the head of both Greenpeace and Amnesty International. Naidoo has turned his energy to a new campaign, one that focuses specifically on the phase out of fossil fuels: the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. The Initiative, founded by former Cleaning Up guest Tzeporah Berman, seeks to establish a binding agreement amongst the most ambitious nations to phase out fossil fuels. So far, it has been endorsed by 16 nation states and 131 subnational governments and cities. Naidoo joins Bryony Worthington to talk about what he's learned from 45 years of campaigning, from hunger strikes to occupying oil rigs in the Arctic, where he thinks activism needs to go from here, and why he believes the Fossil Fuel Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative is the path forward. Leadership CircleCleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Division Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. Roughly €15 billion has been invested in data centres in this country, with two thirds coming from Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and Google. A Clare climate activist insists the US must be a leader when it comes to climate change, instead of continuing with its plan to expand the fossil fuel industry. A number of President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet picks are sparking fears of a regressive new climate policy across the Atlantic which could have devastating long-term effects on the planet. Trump secured his status as a climate-sceptic as far back as 2012, when he famously tweeted that "the concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese, in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive". Since then, he's done little to ease the fears of those who believe in climate change, calling the idea of long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns a "scam" as recently as September. Throughout his recent Presidential campaign, he repeated the mantra "drill baby drill" in relation to his pledge to ramp up fracking in the US while in office. Concerns have been raised following his recent cabinet appointments, which include Lee Zeldin as Environmental Protection Agency administrator, Chris Wright as energy secretary and Doug Burgum as interior secretary, all of whom have adopted views falling under the umbrella of climate-scepticism. Scariff-based Futureproof Clare spokesperson, Sinead Sheehan says rolling back the environmental measures already in place would be fatal, as the planet's survival hinges on more action being taken. It comes as a webinar on energy justice is being held this week by Feminist Communities for Climate Justice. The online event, which is called 'Safe, Warm, Green: Towards Energy Justice', takes place on Thursday at 1pm and will address the intersection of housing, energy, and cost-of-living crises in Ireland. Lisdoonvarna resident Theresa O'Donoghue recently completely the Changing Ireland certificate programme in Maynooth University, in conjunction with Community Work Ireland and the National Women's Council, and will be speaking at the event about her experience of energy poverty as a single mother. She says she's become aware of how particularly vulnerable women are to energy poverty. One of Clare's representatives in European Parliament, meanwhile, is calling for a review of taxes on fossil fuels to relieve the burden on consumers and businesses. Seán Kelly has said rising energy prices are putting serious strain on families and businesses. The Fine Gael Ireland South MEP believes some levies on energy usage are necessary, but suggests a more efficient process is needed to combat high energy prices.

Lucie Pinson is a climate activist focused on the banks that fund fossil fuel projects. But she doesn't march, chant, picket corporate headquarters, or glue herself to the road. Instead, she and her team at the Paris-based nonprofit Reclaim Finance get to know Corporate Social Responsibility officers, trawl through company statements and portfolios, and join shareholder calls. Reclaim Finance's strategy is all about finding ways to pressure big financial institutions from the inside– and it works. She tells Akshat Rathi about some of the successes her organization has had, and why even bank employees who don't care about green issues might find reasons to work with her. Climate Activist Thunberg Briefly Detained during Dutch Highway Protest

Real News Now Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2024 5:12

Noted climate alarmist, Greta Thunberg, found herself in the midst of a police intervention during a rally in The Hague, Netherlands recently. On this occasion, Thunberg, along with other demonstrators, was escorted to a bus by local law enforcement. The protestors had been attempting to disrupt traffic on a significant artery leading into the city. Thunberg was part of a large assembly of advocates comprising hundreds who had gathered in solidarity for their cause. A segment consisting of roughly 100 individuals, Thunberg included, made their move to obstruct A12, the aforementioned highway. While escalating their protest, local authorities intervened leading to the detainment of Thunberg and others. Prior to her detainment, Thunberg had expressed her concerns and the urgency of the situation via a statement, albeit a tad dramatic. She highlighted the severe consequences of disregarding climate change. With an intent to motivate collective action rather than breed fear, the young activist urged not to sit idle when the potential to steer the situation towards the better exists. The highway in question has frequently been a site of mass disruption in the past months. Advocates seeking an immediate termination of all fossil fuel subsidies have repeatedly obstructed the flow of traffic, causing standstills that lasted for several hours on multiple occasions. Previous instances of detentions were met with a soft-handed approach. This typically entailed the police transporting the protestors to a separate location within the city before freeing them, anticipating that this would dissuade them from halting traffic again. The aftermath of this particular detention saw Thunberg displaying a symbol of victory, as captured in the bus that law enforcement used to transport the protestors away from the highway scene. Their determination seemed undeterred and the event was, perhaps, an acknowledgment of their relentless pursuit. Prior to the commencement of the demonstration, Extinction Rebellion, a notable campaign group, hinted that its activists intended to impede the flow of a major thoroughfare leading to The Hague. Presence of law enforcement, which included mounted police, initially thwarted this effort. Despite the authorities' attempts to maintain the status quo, a few individuals managed to break ranks and mount a sit-in protest on an alternate road. They were later detained for failing to comply with law enforcement's decree to abandon their blockade. Activists from the Extinction Rebellion movement have on numerous occasions disrupted the highway that skirts around the temporary house of the Dutch parliament in their crusade against the subsidies. Their methods have remained consistent and their dedication clear with each successive instance. At this rally, other demonstrators were visible alongside Thunberg. Their determination echoed through their chanting which was accompanied by the rhythmic waving of flags and an essential spirit of rebellion. The chorus of their collective voice was 'We are unstoppable, another world is possible.' One demonstrator's sentiment perhaps perfectly encapsulated their shared feelings. Bearing a banner that read: 'This is a dead end street,' the protestor spoke against the unwillingness to alter harmful environmental practices. In a previous confrontation with authorities in the United Kingdom, Greta was cleared of charges. She had been accused of defying a police directive to abandon a picketing effort outside an oil and gas industry convention. However, the court found no merit in the charges brought against her earlier this year in February. Greta Thunberg's advocacy for climate action has been a rallying cry for young people around the world. Her commitment to bring about active changes to address the climate crisis has unequivocally struck a chord amongst youth factions internationally. Thunberg's public dissent began outside the Swedish parliament in 2018, repetitively calling for a more proactive stand to address the climate issue. The actions and ideals she represents have since gained traction and have sparked a global youth movement to lobby for stringent measures against climate change. However, her activism has also led to numerous instances of fines and penalties. Her unyieldy commitment to civil disobedience in the face of injustice, in particular to climate change, has been met with multiple fines. Despite this, she continues to fight back bravely, underscoring her dedication. Thunberg's relentless activism and the response it generates overall put a spotlight on the pressing matter of climate change. Her ongoing encounters with the authorities continue to spark critical conversations and debates around the urgency, the resolution, and the resources required to combat the gradually intensifying global climate crisis. My guest this episode is the distinguished Kumi Naidoo - a human rights and climate justice activist. Naidoo first began his journey at the age of 15 fighting against the then apartheid government in South Africa by organising school boycotts. He was arrested several times for civil disobedience and when the government imposed a state of emergency, he was forced to go underground and flee to the UK, where he became a Rhodes scholar. He eventually returned to South Africa in 1990 when Mandela was released from jail, and went onto play a vital role in shaping the then African National Congress. His steadfast work in the human rights and justice sphere led him to become the first person from the global south to head Greenpeace International and later, Secretary General of Amnesty International. From scaling oil rigs to protest against the fossil fuel industry to sitting down with the likes of Tony Blair, Angela Merkel and Putin, Naidoo has become one of the prominent voices in the climate justice movement.  He continues to represent Africans Rising for Justice, Peace, and Dignity as a Global Ambassador and currently holds the position of Distinguished visiting lecturer at Stanford University's Center for Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law.  In this conversation, we discuss the tragic human crisis unfolding in Palestine to climate urgency and how the climate crisis is interlinked with human rights. Lawrence's new book Carbon Done Correctly officially comes out today. The book features the history of his clean cookstove project, which started in Honduras in the late 1990s.Working with his daughter and a local team, they launched the project after volunteering for several years in the area following the devastating hurricane. While volunteering, they were perplexed by the number of people needing treatment for breathing problems. His daughter was the one who determined that the problem was cookstoves that vented smoke in the homes.Working with locals, they designed, built and installed 29 stoves. Struggling to fund further development of the project, Richard stumbled upon the growing voluntary carbon credit market. He learned that he could generate cash there to fund the project. Four years later, they successfully qualified for Gold Standard certification, enabling the sale of carbon credits.Today, Richard's Proyecto Mirador has sold 310,000 stoves in Honduras and Guatemala with help from carbon credits.Carbon credits have become controversial in recent years. Seen favorably as a potential solution to climate change early on, some climate activists have become skeptical.“There's blame on both sides, I think,” Richard says, reacting to the critics. “Over the last ten years, 12 years, a lot of new methodologies were developed, and those methodologies were not strong enough. That resulted in an overcrediting of emission savings. Quite rightly, those developers are subjected to criticism.”“On the other side of the coin, the critics tend to throw the baby out with the bath water,” he says. “So, they'll find a cookstove project that they believe has over credited, and then they'll pass that all cookstoves over credited.”The truth is that many good carbon projects both reduce carbon emissions and improve lives with better health and economic well-being.Richard credits his superpower, a competitive nature, with driving his impact.AI Episode Summary1. **Introduction**: Devin Thorpe introduces Richard Lawrence as the guest on the "Superpowers for Good" show. Richard is an author, philanthropist, fund manager, nonprofit founder, and the writer of the newly published book Carbon Done Correctly.2. **Carbon Done Correctly**: The book tells the story of Richard's life over the last 20 years, focusing on his efforts in environmental and social work, particularly highlighting a transformative experience during a medical mission in Honduras.3. **Family Trip to Honduras**: Richard's initial involvement in social work began as a concern for his children growing up in a hedonistic society, leading to a family trip to Honduras to participate in medical missions, which revealed health issues linked to inadequate cookstoves.4. **Discovery of Health Issues and Cookstove Solution**: During the Honduras mission, they observed a pattern of respiratory illnesses in women and children, which Richard's daughter linked to smoke from indoor cookstoves. This became the impetus for Richard's work in designing and implementing better cookstoves.5. **Funding Stove Projects**: Richard learned about the carbon market and its potential to raise funds through gold-standard-certified carbon credits. Realizing the power of this mechanism, he decided to use it to finance the building of improved cookstoves.6. **Challenges in Cookstove Implementation**: Acquiring gold standard certification and selling carbon credits took four years. To ensure the initiative's success, the project emphasized holistic improvements in stove design, education, supervision, and monitoring.7. **Cookstove Project Expansion**: The cookstove project expanded significantly, leading to the construction of over 310,000 stoves in Honduras and Guatemala, employing 250 people, and proving the efficacy of using carbon markets for funding.8. **Response to Carbon Credit Criticism**: Richard acknowledges criticism of carbon credits, admitting some issues relate to flaws in methodology and over-crediting. He emphasizes the ongoing work to improve standards and ensure carbon credits effectively contribute to fighting climate change.9. **Social Justice Aspect of Carbon Credits**: Devin mentions, and Richard agrees, that carbon credits represent a means to transfer capital from wealthier nations to places with less capital where climate mitigation strategies can be implemented more cost-effectively.10. **Superpower – Competitiveness**: When asked about his superpower, Richard cites his competitiveness and determination as critical to his success. He shares a story where this trait helped solve a significant problem in the cookstove initiative, leading to a simple but impactful innovation. Richard also advises us to keep moving forward, not dwelling on mistakes and emphasizes the importance of teamwork. If you believe that climate solutions that serve people deserve more attention, please share. How to Develop Competitiveness As a SuperpowerRichard shares a story to illustrate how his competitive nature enabled impact. Many cookstove projects struggle with adoption and utilization. Installing a stove the family doesn't use doesn't help.In the early days, when Richard visited the project in Honduras, he too often found problems like that. In the field with the project COO, Professor Elder Mendoza, the two were angry about the adoption problems.Elder identified the problem–a simple maintenance issue prevented the stoves from working correctly. The solution was a $1 wand they called a “cinco” that the residents could use to keep the stoves operating perfectly. Now, 300,000 stoves later, the solution has proved its worth.Richard suggests a philosophy to develop and strengthen your competitiveness. “Just don't give up.” “Keep looking forward,” he adds. “Don't look back; don't waste time on your mistakes. Just keep moving forward.”By following Richard's example and counsel, you can strengthen your competitiveness. With practice, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileRichard H. Pope Francis says he will attend the COP28 climate conference in Dubai next month, which would make him the first pontiff to attend the annual UN gathering. The pope has made addressing the climate crisis an important focus since 2015, when he published an encyclical on climate change and the environment. Last month, he doubled down on his stance with a new document – Laudate Deum. It's a scathing rebuke of the inaction by world leaders over the last eight years. As Francis takes on an even bigger role in climate activism. What does he hope to achieve? And how does this all fit into his broader legacy as leader of the world's 1.3 billion Roman Catholics. NPR's Scott Detrow spoke with Fordham professor Christiana Zenner, and Associated Press Vatican correspondent Nicole Winfield, about Pope Francis and his role in advocating for action on climate change.
