It's always great having a returning guest and this week we're welcoming back a friend we talked to back in 2021. Alexis Busetti is a seminary student and podcaster who we've been following and engaging with for several years. Her weekly show That Makes Total Sense!, is a wonderful listen and always has interesting and thoughtful people on. This week, she's back to discuss what we've both learned over the last few years of making our shows, how we're preparing to love our neighbors through a socially and politically difficult time, how high control faith systems tend towards acceptance of authoritarians, being people of action, and more!Shoutouts:Abbott Elementary Parks & RecSeveranceWhere is the Friend's House? Our Revolution by Bernie SandersThe SopranosFollow AlexisThat Makes Total Sense!WebsiteInstagramFollow UsInstagramPhilip's LetterboxdShare Your Questions/Suggestions/Feedback With Us:Email: thesubstancepod@gmail.comDM on InstagramSupport Us: Support the show with an individual donation on CashApp to $TheSubstancePod or become a monthly Patreon supporter at patreon.com/TheSubstancePod

Senate Democrats say they will not support a Republican spending bill, which could mean a shutdown of the federal government Friday night. The Democrats have been struggling to find their footing on how to best oppose President Trump's agenda, with some in the party opting for loud resistance, others relying on legal action to stop him, and others trying to work out compromises and slow Trump while minimizing their own political risks. But more and more Democratic voters are fed up and urging their representatives in Washington to fight back, as Trump dismantles more of the federal government every day, laying off thousands of workers and slashing programs he opposes. For more, KCBS Radio news anchor Patti Reising and KCBS political reporter Doug Sovern spoke with Paco Fabian, political director of the progressive grass roots organization Our Revolution, which evolved from Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign and is now the country's largest independent political organizing group.

First, Ralph welcomes economist James Henry to discuss the Trump administration's latest attempts to disable our corporate watchdogs and dismantle the IRS. Then, Ralph is joined by America's Number One Populist Jim Hightower to get his take on what's been happening in our government, and how to fight back.James Henry is an economist, attorney, and investigative journalist who has written numerous articles and several books about international private banking, offshore havens, debt, capital flight, and development. He is a Global Justice Fellow at Yale, and a Senior Fellow at Columbia University's Center for Sustainable Investment. And he is a Senior Advisor to the Tax Justice Network, an international NGO that has led the fight to dismantle tax havens. He has also been an active pro bono environmental and constitutional lawyer in New York.In the past, when so-called business elites (Wall Street, and so on) saw the US government discomforting them, they would send a delegation to the White House. They've done it on matters far less serious than the massive destabilization and disruption that's occurring now.Ralph NaderCorporations are not known (and CEOs are not known) for their courage. But when they see their whole world starting to convulse into chaos… you've got to believe they're going to make their efforts known.Ralph NaderOne thing that I'm just shocked by—it's hard to be shocked by this administration any more than by anything else, but he's basically dismantling the IRS... A lot of what we're talking about here is illegal activity. It isn't even a question.James HenryCountries are pushing back at this bullying tactic. And so this is going to hurt growth. It's going to raise inflation. It's going to blow the deficit targets through the roof. And it's going to also hurt millions of Americans who depend on the government for all kinds of vital, essential assistance…So if you thought there was a rational reason behind Trump's economic plans, this is very hard to justify.James HenryJim Hightower is a syndicated columnist, national radio commentator, and America's Number One populist. He is a board member of Public Citizen, and he is a founding member of Our Revolution, an organization inspired by the issues brought up in the Bernie Sanders campaign. He has written several books including Swim Against the Current: Even a Dead Fish Can Go With The Flow, and his newsletter The Hightower Lowdown publishes twice a week on Substack.Well, the good news, as you point out, is that the people are revolting (in the very best sense of that word, by the way). And it is happening in rural towns, counties, as well as big cities, as well as college towns, working class communities, immigrant communities, et cetera. The rebellion is on. And the people are doing it themselves.Jim HightowerBig money happened. And that big money took over the Democratic Party. My party decided, “Well, you know, we could get some of that corporate money too.” The corporations were willing to fund our campaigns. Well, I can tell you that if you accept a corporate check, written on the back of it is the corporate agenda. And they cash the check, not you. And so that led to my party's abandonment of its populist values, its working class constituency, its values—economic fairness, social justice, equal opportunity for all—those are the populist values. And my party turned into a Republican-light organization. But the people keep rebelling.Jim HightowerPeople are in the streets in state after state and community after community all across our country because people know this is the undoing of the common good. And that is essentially what's at stake here. The billionaires have decided that the common good doesn't matter, only their good matters.Jim Hightower Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

Ralph welcomes Professor Stephanie Luce of the City University of New York, who has co-authored “Practical Radicals: Seven Strategies to Change the World,” and together they outline the challenges and the strategies that face underdogs trying to change the system. Plus, our resident constitutional scholar, Bruce Fein, joins us to discuss the death of Russian dissident, Alexei Navalny.Stephanie Luce is Professor of Labor Studies at the School of Labor and Urban Studies, and Professor of Sociology at the Graduate Center at City University of New York. Professor Luce is best known for her research on living wage campaigns and movements. She is the author of Fighting for a Living Wage and co-author of The Living Wage: Building a Fair Economy, and The Measure of Fairness. Her latest book, co-authored with Deepak Bhargava, is Practical Radicals: Seven Strategies to Change the World. We find it's actually hard to get people to imagine really liberatory worlds because we're so dominated by corporate culture and consumer culture and undemocratic functioning that it is hard to imagine a world that's different. So even just getting people to dream of a different possibility is a good start, and then we have to think about what kind of power it's going to take to make those changes.Stephanie LuceA lot of people critique [collective care as a strategy]. They think it's just about taking care of one another as part of life—that's what we do. We're arguing it can also be strategic because when done well, it enables people to engage in a fight in the long term. You can't go on strike if you don't have someone to watch your children, or if you don't have a strike fund. You can't risk arrest if you don't know if you have bail. So collective care is a way of taking care of one another, doing the things that enable us to take risks and to know people have our back. And that helps us up our militancy and strategy because we can take bigger risks and build the capacity for other kinds of struggle.Stephanie LuceThere's such a thing as the civic personality that is a huge Achilles' heel of the drive to train people civically. You can train people civically… but if they don't have a civic personality, if they don't have fire in their bellies, so to speak, emotional intelligence, if they don't have a framework of a public philosophy, if they don't have a capacity for resilience to learn from their last mistakes, if they haven't controlled their ego so they can give credit to other people in their circle and set an example and motivate, if they're not willing to read and stay up to date with what's going on in their fields and in the area of their opponents, it doesn't matter how many skills they learn from our efforts.Ralph NaderBruce Fein is a Constitutional scholar and an expert on international law.  Mr. Fein was Associate Deputy Attorney General under Ronald Reagan and he is the author of Constitutional Peril: The Life and Death Struggle for Our Constitution and Democracy, and American Empire: Before the Fall.[Alexei Navalny] was free. He knew he could have left [Russia]. He probably could have won a Nobel Peace Prize. He returned anyway. And the pride which I can express in such a human being is beyond words.Bruce FeinIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantisNews 2/20/241. A diplomatic row is brewing between Israel and Brazil. On Sunday, leftist Brazilian President Lula compared Israel's genocidal campaign in Gaza to Hitler's genocide of the Jews during an address to the African Union. In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz declared that until he retracts his comments, Lula is “persona non grata in Israel.” Yet Lula does not intend to retract these comments, and has instead recalled the Brazilian ambassador to Israel. The Israeli campaign against Gaza has forced nearly all of its over 2 million inhabitants from their homes. This from Reuters.2. On Monday, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights issued a report alleging “credible allegations of egregious human rights violations to which Palestinian women and girls continue to be subjected in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.” According to this report, “Palestinian women and girls in detention have…been subjected to multiple forms of sexual assault, such as being stripped naked and searched by male Israeli army officers. At least two female Palestinian detainees were reportedly raped while others were reportedly threatened with rape and sexual violence…photos of female detainees in degrading circumstances were also reportedly taken by the Israeli army and uploaded online.” Experts say “Taken together, these alleged acts may constitute grave violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, and amount to serious crimes under international criminal law that could be prosecuted under the Rome Statute.”3. The anti-Biden “uncommitted” protest vote campaign in Michigan continues to pick up steam. On Valentine's Day, the New York Times reported that Our Revolution – the Bernie Sanders legacy political operation – has endorsed the campaign. Our Revolution joins other prominent new boosters, such as Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and former Representative Andy Levin. In her video endorsing the campaign, Tlaib says “It is important…not only to march against the genocide, not only make sure we're calling our members of Congress … it is also important to create a voting bloc, something that is a bullhorn to say enough is enough.”4. On February 15th, the African Methodist Episcopal, or AME Church Council of Bishops issued a statement calling for the “Immediate Withdrawal of Financial Support from Israel.” This major step from a prominent Black faith group is an indication that the genocidal Israeli campaign in Gaza is alienating significant factions of the Democratic Party coalition. The statement reads “Since 1954, Israel has shown a willful disregard for the human dignity of Palestinians. Since October 7, 2023, in retaliation for the brutal murder of 1139 Israeli citizens by Hamas, Israel has murdered over 28,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children. The United States is supporting this mass genocide. Thismust not be allowed to continue. There must be an immediate and permanent ceasefire between these two communities. We call for a solution to be negotiated by genuine representatives of the people of Israel and Palestine and condemn all violence as a means of resolving this conflict. Surely there is a grassroots solution that affirms the dignity and humanity of all God's people in Palestine and Israel. The tools of empire, colonialism, and domination will not solve the problems they created. The cycle of violence between historically wounded peoples will not be dissolved by the creation of more wounds or through weapons of war. We remain in solidarity with Jesus Christ of Nazareth, a Palestinian Jew, and the Prince of Peace. We weep for the suffering being inflicted upon the children of God in the Holy Land and all the earth. We cry for freedom and implore those who say they love God to demonstrate a tangible love for their neighbors. We will travail in prayer and pursue justice until freedom reigns for all.”5. Semafor reports that Pro-Israel groups are engaging in targeted harassment of mainstream American journalists perceived as too critical of Israel. This story focuses on Washington Post foreign correspondent Lousia Loveluck, and documents how SKDK – a D.C. PR firm close to the Biden administration – has dug into Loveluck's background, including unrelated protests she attended before becoming a journalist. While the Washington Post defended Loveluck's reporting, they did not defend her personally – setting a dangerous precedent for intimidation of American journalists by Israel-aligned groups.6. The Alabama Supreme Court has ruled that “An embryo created through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) is a child protected by Alabama's wrongful death act and the Alabama Constitution.” Specifically, the court ruled that the “parents of frozen embryos killed at an IVF clinic when an intruder tampered with an IVF freezer may proceed with a wrongful death lawsuit against the clinic for alleged negligence.” Yet in a broader sense, this means that IVF clinics will be legally liable for the death of embryos fertilized through IVF – likely spelling the end of IVF in the state. This from 1819 News.7. A stunning report from the Center for Climate Integrity, published in the Guardian, reveals that the plastics industry has deliberately misled the public for years, claiming that their products are continuously and sustainably recyclable – all the while knowing that “recycling cannot be considered a permanent solid waste solution [to plastics], as it merely prolongs the time until an item is disposed of”. Richard Wiles, president of the Center for Climate Integrity puts it simply: “The companies lied…It's time to hold them accountable for the damage they've caused.”8. REI, the company given constant adulation by the liberal press, is union busting. From the REI Union SoHo, “On Feb 15, REI announced it will be withholding annual merit pay increases from our store and all unionized [REI] stores across the Co-op.” Unionized workers walked off the job in protest of this blatant anti-union move.9. AP reports Amazon has joined SpaceX and Trader Joe's in arguing that the National Labor Relations Board is unconstitutional. We have discussed this corporate stratagem on this show before and noted that more corporations, particularly those facing unionization efforts, were likely to adopt this legal argument. Seth Goldstein, a lawyer representing the Amazon Labor Union and Trader Joe's United, said “Since [these companies] can't defeat successful union organizing, they now want to just destroy the whole process.”10. Finally, in some positive labor news, Michigan has become the first state in 60 years to overturn its so-called “right to work” law, the Nation reports. Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber is quoted saying “This moment has been decades in the making…By standing up and taking their power back, at the ballot box and in the workplace, workers have made it clear Michigan is and always will be the beating heart of the modern American labor movement.” Beyond overturning right to work, Michigan has also “restored prevailing-wage protections for construction workers, expanded collective bargaining rights for public school employees, and restored organizing rights for graduate student research assistants at the state's public colleges and universities.”This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. What hit the Republican party on election day was… well, the Republican Party. Blow number one, of course, was from the party's president and cult boss, Donald Trump, who wields his narcissism like a political bludgeon. But then Republicans got an even more damaging gut punch from the party's own Supreme Court majority of six partisan hacks. They chose this election year to assert their personal ideological view that the government should control every woman's birth decisions. Not popular! Then, like a karate chop to the party's own neck, its congressional leaders let loose with a pre-election announcement that, if put in charge, the Grand Old Party would go after people's Social Security and Medicare benefits. But Republicans also got hit with something beyond their control: A bevy of new, unabashedly-progressive Democratic candidate running on real populist issues that matter to workaday people, backed up by legions of energized grassroots activists. Candidates like Summer Lee, who'll be the first Black woman elected to Congress from Pennsylvania. Championed by Working Families Party, Our Revolution, and other little-d democratic groups, she beat back concerted attempts by corporate powers in both major parties that tried to demonize and defeat her, including a last-minute dump of $1 million into her GOP opponent's campaign by the American-Israeli SuperPAC. Another is Lina Hidalgo, the feisty people's advocate who is the top county official in Houston, Texas. She faced down a pack of ultrarich oil magnates, developers, and other corporate interests who put up $9 million in a failed effort to boot her. The Republican Party has put its future on the rutted road of right-wing extremism and corporate sovereignty. Grassroots progressives, however, showed in this election a promising path to democratic rejuvenation: Run aggressive campaigns offering real change from the business-as-usual politics and policies of both parties.

Sen. Joe Manchin – a one-man political steamroller in Washington – is a Democrat. Except when he's not, which is most of the time. A multimillionaire, West Virginia coal executive, he's the darling of fossil fuel and pipeline lobbyists, as well as Republican opponents of progressive Democratic policies. Indeed, he's funded by Republican billionaires. But Washington lobbyists and billionaires are not the only source of personal political power that allows him to hold office and block “little-d” democratic policies that the American majority wants and needs. Back home, Joe has maintained a tight, authoritarian grip on West Virginia's Democratic Party structure, rigging the rules to put Little Joes in each and every party position. In turn, this has long given Boss Manchin control over who gets to run as Democrats for down-ballot elected offices in the Mountain State. Until June 18, that is. That's when a statewide democratic rebellion that had been organizing for six years elected its slate of over 50 candidates to oust the Manchinites on the Party executive committee, replacing all but one of the top Party officers with grassroots activists. It truly was a diverse, people-run victory. Selina Vickers, a social worker, was chief strategist, and Mike Pushkin, a cab driver, is now the Party Chair. Danielle Walker (now vice-chair of the committee and the first person of color in state history to sit on the Party's governing body) summed up the significance of this turnaround: “There's a new beacon of light shining down on the government with people energized and ready to strategize with a return to the democratic process.” For guidance on bringing this kind of progressive reform to your local/state Dem Party hierarchy, go to Our Revolution, the one national group that is prioritizing work on this fundamental democratic change to the Democratic Party. Nina Turner talks about her latest congressional race, which she lost, where the Congressional Progressives Caucus was, & what's next for her. Amy Vilela talks about her own congressional race for Nevada's First District. https://twitter.com/amy4thepeople https://twitter.com/ninaturner Amy Vilela grew up in poverty, relying on programs like WIC & SNAP in order to make ends meet as a single-mother. She took classes at night while working multiple jobs to become the first in her family to earn a degree. She became a national advocate for Medicare for All after her daughter Shalynne died at the hands of our nation's profit-driven healthcare system. After working her way up to become a CFO, Amy has since retooled her professional experience to provide vital campaign services to other progressive candidates. In 2020, serving as a State Co-chair, Amy led the charge for Bernie Sanders' landslide victory in the Nevada caucuses. The Vilelas first moved to Nevada when her husband, Major David Vilela, was transferred to Creech Air Force Base. If elected, she would be the first ever active duty military spouse to serve in Congress. In addition to Congresswoman Cori Bush & Senator Nina Turner, Amy's campaign has attracted national attention and has been endorsed by Brand New Congress, Sunrise Movement Las Vegas, the Center for Biological Diversity & more. Nina Turner, the oldest of seven children, grew up in a working-class family in Cleveland's Lee-Harvard community. Her Mother was a nurse's aide & her Father was a truck driver. Experiencing the impact of income inequality firsthand, Turner took her first job at age 14 to help support her siblings & keep the family afloat. Turner's Mother battled high blood pressure her entire life & died at age 42. This experience exposed to Turner the serious problems with our health care system, especially for Black & lower-income families. After working her way through college and graduate school (she earned an Associate's Degree from Cuyahoga Community College & a Bachelor's and Master's from Cleveland State University), she started a career dedicated to keeping Ohio working families afloat too. Turner made history in 2005 as the first African American woman to represent Ward One on the Cleveland City Council, & again in 2008 as the first African American woman to serve as a State Senator in Ohio's 25th District. In the legislature, Turner repeatedly defended against attacks on women's health care freedom & partnered with working families & organized labor to protect collective bargaining rights. As a champion for criminal justice reform, she led the effort to create Ohio's first task force on police & community relations in the wake of tragic police killings in Ohio & across the country. Turner went on to serve as the Chair of Party Engagement for the Ohio Democratic Party, leading the effort to build a more robust & inclusive organizing infrastructure & support for local Democratic candidates across the State. Turner took her record of accomplishment & commitment to justice nationwide when she became a national surrogate for Bernie Sanders' 2016 Presidential campaign & National Co-Chair for Bernie 2020. In those roles, she traveled coast to coast building support for progressive values such as a $15 living wage, free education from kindergarten through college & health care as a human right in the form of Medicare for All. Between those two campaigns, Turner also served as the President of the national grassroots political organization “Our Revolution.” Nina Turner is a wife, mother & proud grandmother. A former Assistant Professor of History at her alma mater Cuyahoga Community College, she is also the current host of the “Hello Somebody” podcast on iHeartRadio. ***Please support The Katie Halper Show *** On Patreon https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Follow Katie on Twitter: https://twitter.com/kthalps Callin link: https://www.callin.com/episode/nina-turner-amy-vilela-qsJgTwzHDK

GERRYMANDERING FIGHT BACK & RIGHT-WING TERROR We start our Grassroots Emergency Election Protection Zoom #82 by celebrating a major victory for solar energy in California, and with Arizona's GOP-led refusal to gut the electoral process there. Though sane Republicans are an endangered species, there seem to be enough in some states to fight for our democracy. We're then joined by the great JENNIFER ROBERTS of the Carter Center to discuss serious push-back against partisan gerrymandering.   Unfortunately, we receive news during the zoom that the US Supreme Court has refused to uphold an Alabama lower court decision throwing out that state's horrific partisan re-districting.  But it's a provisional ruling, so there's hope. The first U.S. Presidential election was held in 1789. Women were allowed to vote in 1920. The U.S. has a woman in the White House in 2021. Women make up 50.8% of the population, yet women still only hold 142 of the 535 seats in Congress (26.5%).  One woman who is bucking this trend is Malden, MA Ward 3 City Councillor, Amanda Linehan. In this episode, she shares her own journey into politics and how any of us can get involved in shaping policy. You can find her at www.amandalinehan.org   Amanda's Ten Tips for Shaping Policy/Community Engagement: VOTE! The first sounds so basic, but it is simply to vote. If you aren't registered to vote, do so now! And if you are already, then a great idea is to help OTHERS register to vote at a voter registration drive.  VOLUNTEER! Get connected to your city's democrats (or republicans) or advocacy groups like Our Revolution, a rail trail organization or running club or arts group. There's also mutual aid groups and places that serve meals or deliver groceries to neighbors with food insecurity. Houses of worship are often great vectors for making these types of connections, but so is simply reaching out to your local senior center or council on aging. They will be able to hook you up with service organizations that help the isolated, the unhoused, and you could find real joy in delivering turkeys at Thanksgiving or cooking for your area's shelter or warming center. JOIN A CAMPAIGN! Volunteer for a local campaign. They really do love folks with zero experience but a passion for their community, and there are always jobs for a variety of time commitments. I used to ask for walking routes that could be done with a stroller and only within a certain distance of home when I was canvassing with a potty-training toddler, and those one or two hour shifts over the course of a summer campaign were deeply appreciated.  WRITE TO YOUR REPRESENTATIVES! Write to an elected official and ask to get coffee or do a zoom. You'd be surprised how often they will say yes. I always do! You can also easily look up your representatives in your state house and congress and send their office a letter or call. They track everything and you can find out everyone who represents you at a site like vote.org or likely your city or town's website and clerk's office. WATCH A MEETING! Now that things are recorded, stream a local meeting at your convenience and find an issue you are passionate about, then email the mayor or sponsor of that legislation and ask to be added to their mailing list. Or send a letter of support (or against!) a key issue as a starting point, then work up to testifying at a public meeting. The key is to inform yourself by attending, watching later, and reading the local news coverage.   JOIN A NON-PROFIT BOARD! Join a non-profit board. Many of them recruit by word of mouth and are often looking for diversity in ways you may not have considered, for example by age or hometown or professional skill set, so don't assume their criteria are obvious and don't be afraid to express an interest in board service if you attend an event held by a really great organization. This was a great stepping stone for me and once I was affiliated with one, other folks heard about me when they were looking for someone from Malden or who works in Communications or who is passionate about affordable housing for their board. PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS! Engage in ways that play on your strengths and skill set. Do you like talking on the phone? Candidates and causes always need phone bankers, and often you can do this from home! Gregarious and like talking to people? Volunteer to knock doors or hold signs at the polls on election day. Are you great at fundraising, social media, writing, graphic design or planning fun events? Those skills are ALWAYS in demand by candidates and community organizations, and often the same local volunteers are tapped over and over for those roles. SEEK OUT FUN COMMUNITY EVENTS! Come to a fun event like a park cleanup, or a cultural festival, or a block party. New neighbors at that type of event are always embraced and welcomed and you'll likely find folks you can build a connection with. START A PETITION! Start a petition or join one already in progress that is making demands on public officials on policy areas you care about, whether that's better after school programming, better library hours, better racial equity training in the community, fewer trees cut down, you name it. There are often great organizations out there dedicated to the environment and preservation that are great places to start. In this area that would be organizations like Bike to the Sea, Friends of the Fells, Conservation Law Foundation, the Sierra Club, etc. RUN OR APPLY FOR A ROLE YOURSELF! Look past the obvious stepping stones like PTO or School Committee (unless those are your passion areas!) and explore things that align with your professional or personal goals and skills. There are energy efficiency commissions, disability rights boards, cultural councils, redevelopment authorities, immigrant rights groups, historical commissions, and so on. And if you own a business or are self-employed, often the Chamber of Commerce is a great organization to join, and these days they are a lot more dynamic and aiming for better diversity than in previous generations. They are always looking for social-media savvy members to boost their work and amplify the other businesses in town. Joining us to discuss Dr. Shakur's case and more is Peter Schey, the executive director of the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law. Mr. Schey and the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law help represent Dr. Shakur in the legal system. Lastly, our weekly Earth Minute, courtesy of the Global Justice Ecology Project.

Today on Sojourner Truth: Bernie Sanders wowed the nation in a controversial Town Hall on Fox News. Along with fundraising, hes also ahead in the polls. Nevertheless, the establishment of the Democratic Party is seemingly in denial about Bernie being the frontrunner in the early race for President. The establishment is hoping for a more centrist candidate reflecting what is seen to be a rift in the Party between progressive and centrist members of Congress. Does Bernie stand a chance against the Democratic Party political establishment? Our guests are Diane May and Norman Solomon. May is the Communications Director of Our Revolution, a leading non-profit advocating for issues like Medicare for All and tuition-free public college. Solomon is a journalist, media critic, author and activist who was elected as a Bernie Sanders delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 2016. For our Campaigners for Black Lives series, Dr. Melina Abdullah joins us to discuss AB 392, the controversial bill in the California Assembly that would limit when police can fire their weapons. Also, there are hundreds of political prisoners in the U.S. who have been incarcerated for decades, including Dr. Mutulu Shakur, stepfather to the late rap artist Tupac Shakur. Dr. Shakur has been a target of the illegal Counterintelligence Program carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (COINTELPRO). Today on Sojourner Truth: Following a spate of teachers strikes in conservative red states, the Red for Ed movement is growing across the United States. Teachers are now at the forefront of labor actions across the country. Now, a massive teachers strike is underway in Los Angeles. Roughly 30,000 teachers in the city are on strike, impacting 600,000 students. Their demands include wage increases, reduced classroom sizes and more nurses and support staff in schools to serve the students. Our guest is Steve Seal, a fifth grade teacher at Eshelman Avenue Elementary in Lomita. He also serves as the Harbor Area chair of UTLA (United Teachers of Los Angeles). And, you might not know it by watching mainstream media, which is obsessed with Donald Trump. But what some are calling a revolution is underway across France. It is called the Yellow Vests Movement. When it is covered in U.S. media, it is portrayed as a right-wing movement. While, indeed, right-wing forces are trying to infiltrate and divide the movement, nothing could be further from the truth. It is truly a grassroots movement. Who are the Yellow Vests? What do they want? What have women done in the movement? Was has happened since they began their protests? How have they impacted Macrons government? Is the movement growing? Our guest is Benoit Martin, who spoke with Yellow Vests activists on the ground in France. He is with Payday, a network of men working with the Global Women's Strike. Also, Alan Minsky, former Program Director at KPFK and now Executive Director of the Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), joins us in studio to discuss the partnership between PDA with Our Revolution. Our Revolution grew out of the Bernie Sanders campaign and is headed by President Nina Turner.
