February 25, 2024 ~ DOGE has found that schools spent billions in COVID relief funds on things other than the students. James David Dickson joins Kevin to discuss this.
(AURN News) — You could possibly receive a stimulus check from money saved through federal spending cuts made by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). President Donald Trump endorsed the initiative while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One. "I love it, a twenty percent dividend, so to speak, for the money that we're saving by going after the waste and fraud and abuse and all the other things that are happening. I think it's a great idea," Trump said. So how much could you receive? “Could be a lot... I mean, if it's twenty percent, it would give back a lot of money to the taxpayer, and also would give an incentive for the taxpayer to go out and report things to us where we can save money." DOGE, headed by Elon Musk, revealed significant wasteful spending in a recent post on X. "Schools have spent nearly $200B of COVID-Relief funds with little oversight or impact on students," the department posted. "$393K to rent out a Major League Baseball stadium, $86K in Caesars Palace hotel rooms, $60k in swimming pool passes, and even an ice cream truck. All of this money was drawn with zero documentation." The proposal comes as part of DOGE's broader mission to identify and eliminate what it calls inefficient federal spending. The department continues to review expenditures across government agencies to identify additional areas for potential cost savings. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

One of the greatest ironies in America, of all places, is that politicians have the citizens cheering on the raising of taxes on themselves. How so? Well, whenever the government spends money it doesn't have, that the Federal Reserve counterfeits into existence, that's a tax. It's called inflation! The tax is paid by higher prices for the things we buy. When you go to the supermarket, remember the $6 Trillion "Covid Relief.” We're still paying for that “relief.” When government “slaps tariffs” on another country, that's a tax on the American consumers! Americans have bought into the “I'm from government and I'm here to help,” line, and we're paying dearly for it.
Cincinnati Public and Cleveland Municipal schools each received hundreds of millions of dollars in COVID relief funds over the past three years. Now, those funds are drying up.

The owners of Return to Nature Funeral Home, Jon and Carie Hallford, face new federal charges after a grand jury indictment revealed extensive misuse of COVID-19 relief funds and severe mishandling of bodies dating back to at least 2019. According to U.S. Attorney's Office press release, the Hallfords are accused of engaging in fraudulent activities by lying about their financial and legal status to obtain over $880,000 in federal aid. The indictment unsealed Monday in Colorado District Court brings to light shocking allegations against the Hallfords, including giving bereaved families dry concrete instead of their loved ones' ashes and burying the wrong bodies on multiple occasions. They reportedly collected over $130,000 from families for services they never provided, such as cremations and burials. "These new federal charges underscore the severity of the Hallfords' alleged crimes and their blatant disregard for both legal standards and basic human decency," stated the press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Colorado. The charges come atop hundreds of state felony charges they already face, including corpse abuse, theft, money laundering, and forgery. The investigation into the Hallfords' operations began in October 2023 after neighbors reported a foul odor emanating from the funeral home, which Jon Hallford initially claimed was related to his taxidermy activities. However, the smell was later linked to improperly stored decaying bodies. "The situation at the funeral home was appalling and a grievous affront to the community and the families who trusted the Hallfords with their loved ones' final rites," said an investigator associated with the case. Furthermore, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that the funeral home building, contaminated with various biohazards due to the decaying bodies, cannot be repurposed. A scheduled demolition is set to begin this Wednesday and is expected to last for approximately ten days. If convicted of the federal charges, the Hallfords could face up to $250,000 in fines and 20 years in prison. This case has deeply affected the Colorado Springs community, particularly the families involved, many of whom have initiated lawsuits against Return to Nature Funeral Home. "This has been an ongoing nightmare for all of us," said one family member who preferred to remain anonymous. "Knowing that there might be justice brings some solace, but it doesn't undo the pain." As the legal proceedings continue, the community seeks closure and justice for the mishandling and betrayal they have endured. The Hallfords' case is a stark reminder of the need for stringent oversight in sensitive businesses, especially those dealing with funeral services. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? A majority of the top ten recipients of federal COVID-19 relief funds via Missouri's State Assistance For Housing Relief program are privately owned property managers or landlords located in St. Louis. Despite receiving up to six and seven figures in aid, many of these companies failed to provide basic maintenance or upkeep of their apartment complexes. Journalist Mike Fitzgerald discusses his latest report on the SAFHR program and the problems that stemmed from the funds being awarded with little accountability.
Colorado's foster care youth are a small but troubled section of society. Unfortunately, data is scarce for their life outcomes after they exit the system and, in some cases, when they are still inside it. To illustrate the economic impact of even a small sliver of the foster population, the report focuses on those aging out of the system. This is the first study attempting to derive the individual and social costs borne by a cohort of Colorado's foster youth. Foster care youth aging out of the foster care system in Colorado face a multitude of challenges, including higher rates of homelessness, limited education, unemployment, involvement in the criminal justice system, early parenthood, mental health issues, a lack of support networks, limited healthcare access, substance abuse risk, and financial instability. You can read our full report on the subject here. On this episode of Common Sense Digest, Host and Chairman Earl Wright welcomes report author and 2023 Morgridge Child Welfare Fellow John Farnam to discuss his report. The two discuss the shortcomings of the current foster care system, recent incremental victories relative to the issue, and a proposed path forward. The issue has many intertwining contributing factors and long lasting outcomes, and the conversation reflects the complexity of the issue while offering a unique clarity. Thank you for listening to Common Sense Digest. Please rate, review, and subscribe on your favorite podcatcher. All of our podcasts can be found here. John Farnam has served the Morgridge Family Foundation for 12 years, administering more than $150 million in grants, first as chief of staff and now as managing director. John builds relationships and catalyzes connections with partners at every level, resulting in transformational change across all social sectors in Denver and beyond. His expertise has been sought out as an Aspen Institute Fellow, a member of the American Enterprise Institute Leadership Network, and an advisor to the Governor's Leadership Committee on COVID Relief. Howie Klein introduces us to Congressional Candidate Aaron Regunberg. Aaron Regunberg is the progressive candidate running for Congress in a special election this year in Rhode Island. A former state rep, Aaron led successful fights to pass paid sick days legislation, raise his state's tipped minimum wage for the first time in 20 years, reform the use of solitary confinement, expand harm reduction strategies, and enact new renewable energy programs. He's also a climate lawyer and activist. He's been endorsed by all the good groups out there -- progressive orgs like Blue America, Working Families Party, Our Revolution, and Progressive Democrats of America; unions like the Communications Workers of America and the Association of Flight Attendants; climate groups like Climate Hawks Vote and Rhode Island's 350.org affiliate; and progressive icons like Congressman Jamie Raskin. And his campaign is the best chance for us to score a major progressive pick-up opportunity in 2023. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: According to a report from NJ.com, the New Jersey state government spent $522,000 in COVID-19 relief money on the purchase of eight SUVs used to transport Governor Phil Murphy and other state officials. Murphy's administration also spent an estimated $15 million to improve the state's prospects of hosting the 2026 World Cup. Republican Dave McCormick is exploring the idea of running against U.S. Senator Bob Casey Jr. in 2024. In 2022, McCormick lost the Republican nomination for Pat Toomey's vacated Senate seat. According to a report from CNN's Senior Legal Affairs Correspondent Paula Reid, the Justice Department was fully prepared to seek a warrant to search President Joe Biden's Wilmington, Delaware home had Biden's team not consented to a search. Reid emphasized that “there could be more searches.” Speaking with the press on Wednesday, Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) explained that Congress should have access to the classified documents discovered at President Biden's home and UPenn office. Cotton argued that it's necessary to review the documents in order to properly assess whether they could have impacted national security. Cotton also said he would like to review the classified documents discovered at Mike Pence's Indiana home. The Executive branch has not yet granted bipartisan requests for access to the aforementioned documents. Remember that time when Joe Biden plagiarized a speech initially delivered by former leader of Britain's Labour Party Neil Kinnock?
