In a thrilling display of Hilton Magic, Iowa State's 23rd-ranked team secured a 79-75 victory against 7th-ranked Kansas at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday, fueled by an onslaught of 3-pointers. This triumph marked the Cyclones' seventh consecutive home win against a ranked adversary, boosting their record to 13-0 at home this season and advancing their overall standing to 16-4, with a 5-2 record in the Big 12.Kansas, on the other hand, suffered a setback, dropping to 16-4 overall and 4-3 in the Big 12. This loss matched the Jayhawks' worst conference record through seven games in Coach Bill Self's 21-year tenure. Despite trailing by as much as 12 in the second half, Kansas mounted a comeback, injecting suspense into the final minutes. However, Iowa State's proficiency in 3-point shooting, with a season-high 14 makes, proved pivotal in maintaining their lead. With the score tightening to 74-72, Keshon Gilbert's clutch 3-pointer with 41 seconds left halted a 7-0 Kansas run, extending Iowa State's lead to five. Gilbert contributed 11 of his 16 points in the game's final 6:02, complementing Tre King's earlier efforts.Throughout the game, King played a pivotal role for Iowa State, concluding with 21 points and a career-high four 3-pointers. Notably, King, who had only made three 3-pointers all season, converted 4 of 7 against the Jayhawks. His impressive performance prompted a reaction from Kansas coach Bill Self, who turned to his bench with a smirk, seemingly expressing the challenge of dealing with King's unexpected proficiency from beyond the arc.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!GametimeDownload the Gametime app, create an account, and use code LOCKEDON for $20 off your first purchase.FanDuelNew customers, join today and you'll get TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS in BONUS BETS if your first bet of FIVE DOLLARS or more wins. Kansas starts defense of its NCAA Tournament championship on a similar spot on the bracket, as a No. 1 seed. But the Jayhawks start the quest from the West instead of the Midwest Region. On today's SportsBeat KC, beat writers Gary Bedore and Shreyas Laddha discuss all things KU from the health of Coach Bill Self, who missed the Big 12 tournament with a cardiac episode, to the availability of defensive standout Kevin McCullar to how the team displayed superb and disappointing play in Kansas City last weekend. Also, just how did Kansas, with the best resume in college basketball, wind up in the West instead of the Midwest, where the Sweet 16 is set for Kansas City? Location of the regional may not matter as much as the path. KU appears to have drawn a difficult one. The bubble was full of losers and winners on Thursday. North Carolina fell to Virginia and will become the first AP Preseason No. 1 to miss the NCAA Tournament in the 64-team era. Michigan, Nevada, Oklahoma St. are also among Thursday's losers and on the wrong side of the bubble. Several teams helps their cause on Thursday, perhaps none more than Arizona St and Clemson. Penn St, Utah St, Oregon, Rutgers, and Vandy were some of the other bubble winners. Several teams are peaking at just the right time heading into March Madness. That includes Gonzaga, UConn, and Duke. The major conference tournaments have been really chalky thus far. Will we see more movement on Friday? Coach Bill Self is in the hospital and won't coach in the Big 12 Tournament. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

The Sunflower Showdown, Part I, is tonight when Kansas visits Kansas State and it's everything you'd want in a Big 12 game: a pair of ranked teams–KU is No. 2, K-State No. 13–ESPN coverage, what should be incredible atmosphere. Speaking of atmosphere, first-year Wildcats Coach Jerome Tang would like to see things toned down a bit at Bramlage Coliseum. Show love for Kansas State more than hate for Kansas, is the message. You'll hear that suggestion on today's SportsBeat KC with beat writer Kellis Robinett. We also discuss a game that could loom large in rankings and seeding. After a break, you'll hear from KU star Jalen Wilson and Coach Bill Self from their meeting with reporters before the game. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Jeff Gueldner started on a Kansas Jayhawks NCAA champion team, and today you hear his insights on the KU pre- and post-game broadcasts. In between? Enough to fill a book about life experiences that required strength and perseverance through difficult times. In “Without You: A Story About Thanks and Appreciation,” Gueldner writes about the challenges he's faced in the years after his playing career, including battling back from Stage Four carcinoma cancer at age 41. “I was asked by my doctors at the time if I would be willing to counsel others who had a similar type of cancer, and I did,” Gueldner said on SportsBeat KC, The Star's daily sports podcast. “That kind of got the wheels turning. Can I help other people? Can I share my story?” He does, and Gueldner shares his approach to confronting other life obstacles like divorce and failed business ventures along the way. Of course there's basketball. As a sophomore, Gueldner became a starter for the Danny Manning-led 1988 team 20 games into a season that was headed nowhere. KU was being asked about NIT dates for Allen Field House. But fortunes soon changed for the team coached by Larry Brown. A few weeks later, the Jayhawks defeated Oklahoma at Kemper Arena to win the national title. “People started to find their role and assume their role,” Gueldner said. “I was able to guard people and not screw up.” The program's fourth NCAA championship, the second for Coach Bill Self, was captured in April as Kansas overcame the largest halftime deficit to win a title game. Gueldner was part of this run as well as a broadcaster who could relate. Few know more about battling back. There are not too many people who can claim to have played for a Hall of Fame coach and then have the opportunity to work with that same Hall of Fame coach. Jeremy Case, the Jayhawks' new assistant coach and member of the 2008 national championship team, has that interesting perspective and is ready for the challenge after spending five years waiting patiently in an administrative role. Case's roots with the game of basketball and Coach Bill Self run deep. His father, Win, played basketball with Self at Oklahoma State, and he met the Kansas head coach when he was a baby, and his father has gone on to be a longtime assistant coach at the Division I level and currently works at Ole Miss with head coach Kermit Davis. How does Case's unique perspective on the Jayhawk program impact the players that currently wear the uniform that he cares so much about?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
