Ole Miss basketball is off to a rock-solid 6-1 start to the 2022 season.True freshman guard Amaree Abram is a big reason why.Head coach Kermit Davis on Monday joined the Rebel Yell Hotline to discuss, as well as update the status of star second-year point guard Daeshun Ruffin, among other topics.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis kicks it old school for game-day-eve, opposing-team scouts.Rather than simply watch the film and break down an opponent's strengths and weaknesses, Davis puts the Rebels through a round of Jeopardy-style trivia, dividing his roster into two teams to to answer pertinent questions about the matchup ahead.Davis and the Rebels were fresh off a deep-dive into Chattanooga when the fifth-year Ole Miss head coach dialed into the Rebel Yell Hotline Monday night. Ole Miss (2-0, 0-0 SEC) hosts the Mocs (1-1, 0-0 SoCon) Tuesday at a 6:30 p.m. CT.The game will mark the seventh all-time showdown between Ole Miss and Chattanooga, and the first meeting between the teams since a 90-70 Ole Miss win in Davis' debut season in 2018.Ole Miss, following opening-week wins over Alcorn State and FAU, will likely still be without star second-year point guard Daeshun Ruffin. Ruffin missed the final month of last season due to a knee injury, and he's been recently sidelined with a minor bone bruise and missed the first two games.“I'm watching Florida Atlantic right now and they're down two to Florida with about six minutes to go in the first half,” Davis said. “Florida Atlantic is a good team; gonna be an NCAA Tournament team. You look at Alcorn State, that we beat, went to Wichita State and won by nine.“College basketball is amazing this year. A lot of good teams. We've got some work ahead of us for sure, but a good week for us to go 2-0.”Ole Miss football color analyst Harry Harrison also joined the show to break down all the latest with Lane Kiffin's program, including a 30-24 loss to Alabama over the weekend.Davis and Co., meanwhile, will play two games again this week. The Rebels are set to welcome Tennessee-Martin to town Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT.“We're offensive rebounding at a really high clip right now,” Davis said. “I thought we moved the ball (and) we got 80 points against a good defensive team (in FAU).“I thought we played really well in the second half against Alcorn State. I thought we played well when Matt Murrell maybe didn't have his best game. He play-maked well. A big strength of our team is going to be the depth of our team.”Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Kermit Davis is knocking on as much wood as he can find lately, ‘cause his Ole Miss men's basketball team is as healthy as it's been in a long, long time. The timing couldn't be better, really. The Rebels are in their third week of preseason practices, and their season opener against Alcorn State is rapidly approaching November 7. They'll hold a closed scrimmage Sunday with another Power 5 opponent before host West Georgia for an exhibition two weeks from Tuesday. The overall health of the roster isn't all positive, but, first and foremost, star second-year point guard Daeshun Ruffin has been cleared for full contact. Same for true freshman guard Robert Cowherd. First-year transfer Josh Mballa, formerly of Buffalo, is out after he “tweaked his hamstring again,” as Davis put it, but otherwise, Ole Miss is rounding into form.“We're going to have a Blue-White scrimmage, and (Daeshun will) go for like four minutes in that,” Davis said, adding Mballa is “out for about four or five days. “He won't scrimmage in our closed deal on Sunday. Hopefully by the next week we've got him back.”Davis spoke extensively about the team's injury situation, Square Jam, recruiting and more in an interview with the Ole Miss Spirit's Talk of Champions podcast.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ole Miss basketball has three commitments for 2023, including four-star forward Rashaud Marshall, and the Rebels hosted a pair of priority recruits (Josh Hubbard and Macaleab Rich) for visits last weekend.Life is pretty good right now for fifth-year head coach Kermit Davis and staff.“It's been a great team effort,” Davis said, in this Talk of Champions Extra. “Our staff has done a great job. The assistants have worked like mad, and the support staff's heavily involved. Your players have done an unbelievable job. Right now we've got three guys committed in the class and working like heck for a couple of others. Will continue to do that. Making a lot of in-roads on our 24s and 25s. A lot of 24s scheduled to come to campus officially, unofficially.“We're working at it every day. I can't tell you how hard the assistant coaches have been working. Great group. Great camaraderie with the group. It's been really fun. Everybody knows, that are Ole Miss fans, you get them to Oxford, and you get those families coming to Oxford, it sells itself. The people sell it. It's been fun. A lot of hard work ahead of us, though.”To be sure, though, the work is far from over.Hubbard and Rich are both set to make their college decisions later this month, Ole Miss just rolled out its SEC slate for the 2022-23 season, and, off the court, Davis is a newly-minted papaw.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
