Milwaukee Bucks assistant general manager Milt Newton joined Marques Johnson & Kris Johnson to discuss his incredible journey with basketball and an inside perspective on Milwaukee's offseason transactions over the past two seasons. Their conversation begins with a look at Newton's basketball life, starting with the influential D.C. basketball scene and his early days as a player before transitioning to his college years with the 1988 NCAA Champion Kansas Jayhawks. He shares stories from ‘Danny & The Miracles,' learning from iconic coaches like Larry Brown, John Calipari and Roy Woods, playing with Danny Manning and more from that era of his life. That leads to a chat about how he transitioned to NBA front office roles and why his time under iconic coaches influences how he looks at roster construction. Milt breaks down the Bucks' mindset and approach to their three key offseason additions of Delon Wright, Taurean Prince and Gary Trent Jr. He provides a deeper look at the Damian Lillard trade nearly one year later and how the team has evolved around its core for the upcoming season. The conversation is capped off as we learn more about Newton's artistic side and how he made a larger impact on Kris' career than he even knew. Jeff Gueldner started on a Kansas Jayhawks NCAA champion team, and today you hear his insights on the KU pre- and post-game broadcasts. In between? Enough to fill a book about life experiences that required strength and perseverance through difficult times. In “Without You: A Story About Thanks and Appreciation,” Gueldner writes about the challenges he's faced in the years after his playing career, including battling back from Stage Four carcinoma cancer at age 41. “I was asked by my doctors at the time if I would be willing to counsel others who had a similar type of cancer, and I did,” Gueldner said on SportsBeat KC, The Star's daily sports podcast. “That kind of got the wheels turning. Can I help other people? Can I share my story?” He does, and Gueldner shares his approach to confronting other life obstacles like divorce and failed business ventures along the way. Of course there's basketball. As a sophomore, Gueldner became a starter for the Danny Manning-led 1988 team 20 games into a season that was headed nowhere. KU was being asked about NIT dates for Allen Field House. But fortunes soon changed for the team coached by Larry Brown. A few weeks later, the Jayhawks defeated Oklahoma at Kemper Arena to win the national title. “People started to find their role and assume their role,” Gueldner said. “I was able to guard people and not screw up.” The program's fourth NCAA championship, the second for Coach Bill Self, was captured in April as Kansas overcame the largest halftime deficit to win a title game. Gueldner was part of this run as well as a broadcaster who could relate. Few know more about battling back. The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.
September 12, 2022: Last year was a strange one for Maryland as their coach for over a decade, Mark Turgeon, abruptly resigned after only 8 games into the season. He was replaced by interim coach Danny Manning who provided only a lackluster finish for the season with the Terps finishing 7-13 in the Big Ten. In a story repeated more often nowadays, there have been a lot of departures from Maryland as well as incoming transfers to try and shore up the program. It appears that Willard has been able to make a little headway in recruiting for the 2023 season but he will have problems this season cobbling together a team to be competitive in the Big Ten. Dowell does the impossible and pitches the might Danny Manning's of Maryland to upset Tom Izzo's Spartans.
