The first conversation in Sensing Urban Matter brought together two artists - Ivana Králíková and Evelina Šimkutė - to talk about how an off-center urban garden has been key in their artistic practice. Ivana Králíková is a Stockholm-based artist who since 2017 is committed to a long term interdisciplinary research Dig Where You Stand where she uses her background in ceramics and knowledge about soil as an entry point into exploring the natural and cultural processes affecting land use in cities. An offshoot project, Hi Neighbour! investigates earth's functionality in the local environment of Stockholm's suburb of Hjulsta, where Ivana carries out her hands-on research from headquarters situated in the local allotment gardens and surrounding area. Since 2015 Evelina Šimkutė is leading Šilainiai Project – creative platform in housing estate of Šilainiai, Kaunas, which focuses on active engagement with the site and local community through a variety of creative processes – collaborative archives, workshops, artist residencies, talks and events. Currently Evelina is focusing on long-term strategies for sustainable city and community in the neigbourhood, coordinating Šilainiai Urban Gardens initiative. Both Ivana and Evelina met during the urban hike proposed by Ivana in September, 2021 - Dig Where You Stand: Journey into Neoenvironmental Kaunas. Here in this podcast they share their ideas before their live meeting in Kaunas about urban plants and gardens, what does it mean for an artist to be “grounded” and the relation between a garden and a home. “How do we make invisible things visible? (…) Hyper-locality—you are in one place and at least geographically where you are working and who you are working, participants, target audience, co-creators, however you approach the process—is seen as a negative thing: “You're hyperlocal, so you are not reaching everyone”. I would seriously invite to try and be part of at least for a day and learn about maybe this different way of working process and think about the value that it brings.” Sensing Urban Matter podcast series is curated and moderated by Viktorija Šiaulytė. Architektūros fondas' programme Sensing Urban Matter is part of the Future Architecture platform and European Architecture programme 2021, and is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and a strategic partner Lithuanian Council for Culture.

NIGHT AIR: SOIL SAMPLES 24 April 2021 - Online Transmission Soil Samples gathers four artists and researchers for performances, presentations and discussions addressing the topic of soil and its geopolitical, colonial, and bodily entanglements. The panel is made up of sound artist Felicity Mangan, researcher and 'tiny miner' Martin Howse, biogeochemist and critical ecologist Kunal Palawat working in tandem with visual artist Dorsey Kaufmann. The event was transmitted online from Rotterdam on Saturday 24 April 2021, with participants and the audience joining from various locations worldwide. FELICITY MANGAN Felicity Mangan is an Australian sound artist and composer based in Berlin since 2008. In different situations, from solo performances and installations to collaborative projects with other artists, Felicity plays with the timbre of animal voices and field recordings to create minimal quasi-bioacoustic environments. Recently, the artist has been exploring the fundamentals of soil life and interspecies creativity, delving into soil's soundscape, equipped with sensors and imagination. MARTIN HOWSE Martin Howse is occupied with an investigation of the links between the earth, software and the human psyche through the construction of experimental situations, material artworks and texts. From 1998 to 2005 Howse was director of ap, a software performance group working with electronic waste, pioneering an early approach to digital glitch. For the last ten years, he has initiated numerous open-laboratory style projects and performed, published, lectured and exhibited worldwide. KUNAL PALAWAT Kunal Palawat is a terrestrial biogeochemist and critical ecologist currently working at the intersections of pollution, community-based research, data science, and environmental justice at the University of Arizona on occupied Tohono O'odham and Pascua Yaqui lands (so-called Tucson) in the Ramírez-Andreotta Lab. They are also a Lab Manager and Research Associate with the Critical Ecology Lab, a non-profit research and education container striving to explicitly connect systems of oppression/liberation to global change. DORSEY KAUFMANN Dorsey Kaufmann actively challenges disciplinary boundaries by making work at the intersection of art, environmental science, and politics. She primarily works in time-based media; including video, performance, animation, and 3-D installations. Her practice examines the conflict among corporations, governments, and community health. Her work visualises how these tensions and perceptions constantly define and redefine our built environment. NIGHT AIR Night Air is a series of online transmissions from Sonic Acts that aims to make pollution visible by bringing forth the various side-effects of modernity: from colonial exploitation of people and resources to perpetual inequalities brought about by the destruction of the environment and common land – in other words, destructive capitalist practices that shape both our environment and human-nonhuman relations. Recorded 05.12.2019 at Tschechisches Zentrum Berlin Focusing primarily on politically prominent post-war public investment projects in the former state-socialist countries Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia (also called the Visegrad Group), the evening explored where the state’s ambitions of power and the architects’ creative ideas connected and where they clashed. How is the society’s relationship to these buildings and how is each of the Visegrad countries handling this heritage from the socialist era? Featuring: Petr Vorlík (CZ), architect and architecture historian. Co-curator of the Iconic ruins? exhibition. He works in the Department of Theory and History of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture, Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague. Peter Szalay (SK), architecture historian and theoretician. He works as a researcher at the Department of Architecture, Institute of History at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava. Anna Cymer (PL), architecture historian and journalist. She is the author of the book Architektura w Polsce 1945 - 1989 (Architecture in Poland 1945 - 1989) and co-curator of the Iconic ruins? exhibition. On the occasion of this discussion a small exhibition Iconic Ruins? tracing the evolution of socialist architecture in the countries of the Visegrad Group will be shown. The exhibition was created as part of Shared Cities: Creative Momentum - an international network for creative discourse at the intersection of architecture, art, urbanism and the sharing economy, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. archint_1989_cz:de is an event series focusing on the architecture and monuments from the post-war period and how they have been dealt with since the Velvet Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Why does our freedom often manifest as the freedom to destroy or simply just to forget? Can these actions be seen themselves as not only interventions but as actual monuments to the regained freedom, reunification and post-1989 transformation? Should these works of art and architecture be disconnected from their political connotations and instead be respected for their artistic value? Is it a question of East – West division? Here, Czech and German architectural theoreticians will present their new projects and discuss them. Partners of the event series: Embassy of the Czech Republic in Berlin, Collegium Hungaricum Berlin, Polish Institute Berlin, Slovak Institute in Berlin, EUNIC Berlin. IN VITRØ – artificial sønificatiøn | Sound Installation [21.09.2019 - 22.11.2019] Matera, Italy is considered to be one of the oldest cities in the world with distinctive cave-like dwellings carved out of limestone. Called "Tufo" by inhabitants of the region, this soft stone consists mainly of calcium carbonate, a chemical compound of the elements calcium, carbon, and oxygen, laid down as sediment millions of years ago. Over time, spaces have been hollowed out through the flow of water and human hands, extending back into a layered history. »NCS_Hypogean-City« is a multi-room sound installation of spatialized electroacoustic miniatures. Its textual characteristics and dramaturgical progressions are built upon the sonification of the area's timeline, geological data, and both the symbolic and numerologicalic aspects of calcium, carbon and oxygen: Ca (20), C (6), O (8). Through the dynamic placement of small-scale loudspeaker systems new (sound) connections are created within the space that artistically reflect Matera's geologically unique setting and stimulate the cave acoustics of the Casa Cava. The multi-room sound installation was exclusively developed in 2019 for IN VITRØ - artificial sønification as part of the Interfaces Project, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
