A 1.3 mile stretch of Crenshaw Boulevard is supposed to be a future hub of Black arts and culture in LA. Residents are torn over what it’ll do to the neighborhood’s legacy and future.  On Tuesday, President-elect Trump made good on a campaign promise to appoint Elon Musk head of what’ll be known as the Department of Government Efficiency — or “DOGE.”  California’s 2024 election results show a political shift to the right. Support for President-elect Trump has risen since 2020, and voters have approved tough-on-crime measures Artist Doug Aitken’s new project “Lightscape” is a collaboration with the LA Philharmonic and LA Master Chorale that weaves music and film to create an ethereal and visual soundscape.

Our conversation with Emmy Award-winning editor Lyric Ramsey was a whole vibe. Lyric's eclectic credits include Below Deck, MasterChef Junior, Sweet Life: Los Angeles, Project Runway Junior as well as A Black Lady Sketch Show, On My Block, Clarice, The Goldbergs, Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story, You People, Real Housewives of Atlanta, the BET Hip Hop Awards and I Love New York. Also, no shade to any of our previous guests but if we had a Post In Black best-dressed award, Lyric Ramsey would be the recipient. Business equestrian is how she referred to it and honestly, it's perfect. It's no surprise that we begin with fashion as we talk about how Lyric earned the Emmy for Drive with Swizz Beatz, a Hulu docuseries that explores the art cars, oversized ATVs and car clubs that decorate Houston, Texas. Having loved film and television from a young age, this Howard University grad talks about being back home in California after graduation and while leaving an appointment at a salon, seeing a film crew in action on Crenshaw Boulevard in Inglewood. She ended up getting hired on the spot as a set production assistant. We talk about her love of the post-production space and why perseverance and optimism are very crucial attributes to hold tight to despite shifts in the industry. We get into what it means to have job insecurity and the side effects of gate-keeping. We talk about nerding out on editing and why it's important to know multiple platforms and constantly expand upon your skills. Steadily clear throughout the entirety of our conversation is that Lyric is a true blue creative. It shines. It also perfectly illustrates how following one's passion can lead to a longevity of not only satisfaction but success and elevation. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/postinblack/support

Established in 1927 by Walter H. Leimert, Leimert Park was one of the first planned communities in Los Angeles. Consisting of roughly 1.20 square miles within LA’s Crenshaw District, this historic community has the largest Black population in the Greater LA region, with more than 79% of residents identifying as such. Indeed, “nurtured by three generations of African Americans with a shared vision of economic self-empowerment, the patronage of black businesses, the cultivation of black arts, and the maintenance of a public commons for political discourse, Leimert Park is not just the crown jewel of black Los Angeles, it is its center.” (https://www.kcet.org/shows/departures/the-center-can-hold-leimert-park-and-black-los-angeles)   With the expansion of LA Metro’s new rail line running down Crenshaw Boulevard to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX); the advancement of the signature “Destination Crenshaw” project; and new entrepreneurs setting their sights on the district, CivitasLA is joined by distinguished community leaders offering their unique perspectives on the issues, challenges and opportunities faced by the community. In June 1949, more than a year after the Kern murder, another body was found. Louise Springer, a successful young hairdresser, was carjacked in a parking lot on Crenshaw Boulevard, just five blocks from the site at 39th and Norton where Elizabeth Short’s body had been dumped two and a half years earlier. Four days later, Louise’s body was found in the back seat of her car, which had been abandoned on a downtown side street. The manhunt that ensued was the largest in the city since the Black Dahlia investigation. While the search continued, the first of two women went missing. Emily Boomhower, a wealthy widow, disappeared from her Bel Air mansion on August 18, 1949. Wednesday, April 13, 2011 Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas Mark Ridley-Thomas has represented the nearly 2.3 million people of the Second District on the Los Angeles County  Board of Supervisors since December 2008. During his first year in office, he shepherded through an agreement with the University of California to provide medical services at the new Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital, scheduled to open in late 2012. He also persuaded the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to fund a light rail system from Crenshaw Boulevard to Los Angeles International Airport and move up the opening from 2029 to as early as 2016. Together, the hospital and rail projects will generate more than $2 billion in spending and create over 16,000 jobs. Ridley-Thomas is the first African American man ever to serve on the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors. His district  includes Carson, Compton, Culver City, Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood and Lynwood, portions or all of 10 Los Angeles City Council Districts and the unincorporated communities of Alondra Park, Athens, Del Aire, Dominguez, East Compton, El Camino Village, Florence, Ladera Heights, Lennox, View Park, West Athens, West Carson, West Compton, Willowbrook and Wiseburn. Prior to his election to the Board, Supervisor Ridley-Thomas served the 26th District in the California State Senate where he chaired the Committee on Business, Professions and Economic Development and its two subcommittees on Professional Sports and Entertainment, and The Economy, Workforce Preparation and Development. In addition to his chairmanship duties, Ridley-Thomas served on the Senate Appropriations, Energy, Utilities and  Communications; and Health and Public Safety committees. In January 2008, he became Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus and led the Caucus in unprecedented levels of cooperation and collaboration with counterparts in the Latino, and Asian-Pacific Islander Legislative Caucuses. His legislative work addressed a broad range of issues with implications for economic and workforce development, health care, public safety, education, budget accountability, consumer protection and civic participation. Mark Ridley-Thomas was first elected to public office in 1991 and served with distinction on the Los Angeles City Council for nearly a dozen years and  departed as Council President pro Tempore. He later served two terms in the California State Assembly, where he chaired the Assembly Democratic Caucus. He is widely regarded as the foremost advocate of neighborhood participation in government decision-making. By virtue of his founding the Empowerment Congress, arguably the region’s most successful experiment in neighborhood-based civic engagement, he is considered the founder of the Neighborhood Council movement. Ridley-Thomas’ political career was preceded by a decade of service as executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles, which followed a brief but successful five-year stint as a high school teacher. He is a graduate of Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles and earned a baccalaureate degree in Social Relations (minor in Government) and a master’s degree in Religious Studies (concentration in Christian  Ethics) from Immaculate Heart College. Mr. Ridley-Thomas went on to receive his Ph.D. in Social Ethics and Policy Analysis from the University of Southern California. He is married to Avis Ridley-Thomas, director of the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office Dispute Resolution Center. They are the proud parents of twin sons, Sebastian and Sinclair, who graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta. Contact 866 Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration 500 W.
