Some of the most important lessons are the ones we learn from failure.  Lloyd Henry is  a 32-time Ironman & long-course finisher. He overcame the stigma of athletes losing their drive after a loss. He had no background in sports, but progressed  to become a sub-3-hour marathoner He has competed in numerous running events (5k to ultra-marathon) including the Boston Marathon and Comrades Marathon (South Africa). He has been running since 2002 and coaching triathletes since 2004.   He uses all his personal experiences to coach effectively.  Coach Lloyd Henry  takeaways, experiences, and lessons he took and it makes him an effective, compassionate coach. Born to a Barbadian mother & Crucian father in St. Croix, Harlem-based Hubert Harrison (1883-1927) was a brilliant writer, orator, editor, educator, critic, & activist. He combined class consciousness & anti-white-supremacist race consciousness, internationalism, & struggle for equality into a potent political radicalism. Harrison's ideas profoundly influenced "New Negro" militants, including A. Philip Randolph & Marcus Garvey, & his work is a key link in the 2 great strands of the Civil Rights/Black Liberation struggle: the labor-&-civil-rights movement associated with Randolph & Martin Luther King Jr. & the race and nationalist movement associated with Garvey & Malcolm X.  "Hubert Harrison: The Struggle for Equality, 1918-1927" (Columbia University Press) follows "Hubert Harrison: The Voice of HarlemRadicalism, 1883-1918". St. Croix’s Carnival became an annual event in 1952 with the revival of old holiday traditions transformed into modern Festival. Dating back at least to the early-1800s enslaved Africans on St. Croix were allowed to celebrate Christmas & New Year’s Days. The celebrations on plantations included drumming, singing, & dancing.This month-long celebration incorporates modern-day celebrations with long-standing traditions for over 60 years. It involved parading through the streets of town singing, dancing, & playing drums; often stopping door to door for rum & wine. Masquerading was popular during Christmas & other holidays including Easter & Whit Monday. These traditions continued into the early 1900s but saw some decline. Social events kept music traditions & dances like the quadrille, lancers & bomboula alive. The Carnival festival collected traditions into one big event with a focus on the former holiday celebrations. The event has become more organized each year, incorporating additional events. While most of the action happens in Frederiksted, events & venues span across St. Croix, with celebrations including nightly displays of talented bands & musicians, pageants for Carnival royalty & fairs that showcase local crafts, foods, & drinks. The best is saved for last. J’ouvert, the Children’s Parade, & the famous Adult’s Parade are the last of the official festival events. The Parades are a beautiful display of Crucian culture with troupes dancing through the streets all-day long wearing beautifully hand crafted, vibrant, feathery costumes. Welcome OBAP (Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals)  Aviation Career Education Academy (ACE). OBAP ACE Academies are co-sponsored with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other select organizations or institutions. Their academies include many interesting educational activities and field trips. During an OBAP academy, students can expect to participate in activities that feature STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) components. They also include trips to aviation related facilities and receive tours of areas the general public normally never see. Also, their academies offer students the opportunity to perform actual flights in a general aviation aircraft. Traditionally, these flights are easily the highlights of a student's experience. ********* Born on St. Croix in 1929, James Jamesie Brewster is known throughout the Caribbean as the undisputed King of Scratch Band Music. He is known for his humorous, provocative and playful ompositions and for his lively performances. He has performed throughout the Caribbean and in Europe and has recorded a number of albums over the past fifty years. Surprisingly, when Jamesie was younger, his father only allowed him to play percussion and not guitar. Jamesie was determined to prove to his father that he was capable of playing guitar and so made his own out of a sardine can and a piece of white pine lumber. With a hand-carved keyboard and key-head and strings made out of twine from an old sack of flour, this guitar has become his signature instrument. In the six decades that have followed, Jamesie has continued to use this type of guitar when performing and recording music, although not exclusively. Jamesie is a Crucian from the instant he wakes up and in the way he eats, dresses, sits, smokes, talks. He makes kitchen implements out of mahogany, makes musical instruments out of food tins, makes melee out of news.

The Virgin Islands Literary Festival and Book Fair will feature several events highlighting the historic Crucian writer and  activist, Hubert Harrison, the weekend of March 26-29. Saturday evening, March 28th, there will be a performance of David Edgecombe’s play Hubert Harrison.  Today we meet two gentlemen who diligently worked to bring the biography of a forgotten Virgin Islander to the forefront. One, an author, the other, a playwright, but they both wrote about Crucian-born Hubert Harrison, Dr. David Edgecombe, writer, director, instructor, and playwright has worked at the University of the Virgin Islands from 1990 to present. In 1992, he became director of the Reichhold Center for the Arts. He's "internationally known for several plays, including Strong Currents and Coming Home to Roost. Upon returning to the Islands, David joined the faculty at the University of the Virgin Islands and became their artist-in-residence, premièring his play, Heaven. Dr. Jeffrey Perry, formally educated at Princeton, Harvard, Rutgers, and Columbia,  preserved and inventoried the Hubert H. Harrison Papers and helped to place them at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Columbia University and to develop the Hubert H. Harrison Papers, 1893-1927: Finding Aid. He is the editor of A Hubert Harrison Reader (Wesleyan University Press, 2001) and the forthcoming Writings of Hubert Harrison.
