It's been nearly a decade since Rihanna released a studio album—and fans and critics alike have wondered when, if ever, a follow-up to 2016's Anti might arrive. Which is ironic, because in her heyday, Rihanna was the most productive hitmaker on the charts. Churning out at least one album a year in the late aughts and early ‘10s,  Rihanna's approach to the charts was closer to early Motown or the Beatles than Beyoncé or Taylor. The result: the Barbadian pop deity scored more No. 1s than any 21st century artist, from “SOS” and “Umbrella” through “Diamonds” and “Work.”  Join Chris Molanphy as he traces Rihanna's journey from tropical tyro to commanding chart queen and explores how she found hits at a boundless pace. Join us in this inspiring episode as Ricky Ellcock shares his journey from a wooden hut in Barbados to flying the Boeing 747 for Virgin Atlantic. Discover how he overcame poverty and racism, fueled by a dream ignited on a US aircraft carrier. Ricky's story highlights the importance of resilience and community support, showcasing how he transitioned from cricket to aviation despite facing numerous challenges. Tune in to hear about his struggles with depression and his triumphant return to the skies, proving that "black people can fly aeroplanes". KEY TAKEAWAYS Ricky Ellcock's journey from growing up in a wooden hut in Barbados, with no running water or electricity, to becoming a professional cricketer and pilot exemplifies resilience. He describes his childhood in a "little slave settlement" and the communal support he received from neighbours, which helped him navigate poverty and pursue education and sports. Ricky’s academic success allowed him to secure a scholarship to Malvern College, a prestigious institution in the UK. His parents incentivised his performance with rewards, such as a watch and a bicycle, which motivated him to excel and ultimately led to his acceptance into one of the top schools. Despite his father's discouragement, stating that "black people don't fly aeroplanes," Ellcock was determined to prove him wrong. This moment marked the beginning of his ambition to become a pilot, showcasing how he transformed a negative statement into motivation to succeed. After a successful cricket career that was cut short by injuries, Ricky faced a period of depression. He eventually found his way back to aviation, realising his childhood dream of flying after backpacking through the United States and discovering flight schools. Representation in aviation cannot be understated as there are very few black pilots. He hopes that his story will inspire young black individuals to pursue careers in aviation, demonstrating that success is possible regardless of one's background. BEST MOMENTS “Cricket was my ticket out of poverty, a sport that gave me strength and purpose, and it all started with a simple game using a coconut branch as a bat." "It doesn't matter how many times you fall down. What matters is how many times you get up." "There are not many role models... I hope that kids can look at something like this and think if he can do this, so can I." "This is a story of triumph really." Caree A. Banton's book More Auspicious Shores: Barbadian Migration to Liberia, Blackness, and the Making of an African Republic (Cambridge UP, 2019) chronicles the migration of Afro-Barbadians to Liberia. In 1865, 346 Afro-Barbadians fled a failed post-emancipation Caribbean for the independent black republic of Liberia. They saw Liberia as a means of achieving their post-emancipation goals and promoting a pan-Africanist agenda while simultaneously fulfilling their 'civilizing' and 'Christianizing' duties.  Through a close examination of the Afro-Barbadians, Banton provides a transatlantic approach to understanding the political and sociocultural consequences of their migration and settlement in Africa. Banton reveals how, as former British subjects, Afro-Barbadians navigated an inherent tension between ideas of pan-Africanism and colonial superiority. Upon their arrival in Liberia, an English imperial identity distinguished the Barbadians from African Americans and secured them privileges in the Republic's hierarchy above the other group. By fracturing assumptions of a homogeneous black identity, Banton ultimately demonstrates how Afro-Barbadian settlement in Liberia influenced ideas of blackness in the Atlantic World. Caree A. In 1951, at the age of 21, Gwendoline Crockford joined the Berkshire Constabulary as a woman police constable. Curator and filmmaker Ashish Ghadiali connects climate science, contemporary art, and activism, cultivating a radical, cultural ecology in the countryside of south-west England, in their multidisciplinary exhibition, Against Apartheid. As environmental crises disproportionately affect Black and brown communities, and the resulting displacement often racialised, should we consider these states of ‘climate apartheid'? And could contemporary art help to bridge the gap between science and academics, and everyday action guidance? Against Apartheid, a multidisciplinary exhibition in Plymouth, puts these practices, histories, and geographies in conversation, from vast wallpapers charting global warming, to an intimate portrait of Ella Kissi-Debrah, and plantation paylists collected by the Barbadian artist Annalee Davis, linking land ownership in Scotland and the Caribbean from the 19th century Abolition Acts. Other works affirm how historic ecologies of empire – African enslavement, the middle passage, and the genocide of Indigenous peoples - continue to shape our present and future, in the geopolitics of international borders, migration, and travel. Activist and filmmaker Ashish Ghadiali talks about his work as ‘organisation', not curation, and how we can resist the individualisation that prevents effective collective political action. From his background in film, he suggests why museums and exhibitions might be better places for screenings than cinemas, outside of the market. We discuss why both rural countryside and urban city landscapes should be considered through the lens of empire, drawing on ‘post-plantation' and anti-colonial thinkers like Paul Gilroy, Françoise Vergès, Sylvie Séma Glissant, and Grada Kilomba. We relocate Plymouth's global history, a focus since #BLM, reversing the notion of the particular and ‘regional' as peripheral to the capital. We explore the wider arts ecology in south-west England, and how local connections with artists like Kedisha Coakley at The Box, and Iman Datoo at the University of Exeter and the Eden Project in Cornwall, also inform his work with global political institutions like the UN. Against Apartheid runs at KARST in Plymouth until 2 December 2023, part of Open City, a season of decolonial art and public events presented by Radical Ecology and partners across south-west England. In science fiction, aliens who come to Earth are usually scary and menacing, aspiring to destroy, conquer, or even eat mankind. But the aliens in Karen Lord's The Blue, Beautiful World (Del Rey, 2023) aren't interested in conquering or destroying; they're interested in inviting Earthlings to join a Galactic Council. It turns out, however, that humans need a little time and training before they're ready to assume the responsibilities of galactic citizenship. And complicating matters is the fact that humans might not be the only Earth dwellers to receive the aliens' invitation. It's not surprising that water and oceans figure prominently in Lord's novel. As a Barbadian writer, she has a lifelong respect—and fear—of the water. “I'm kind of terrified of the ocean,” Lord said. “To give you context, there is literally a part of the island that you can drive to and look around and see three coastlines. But you can't see any other land from any of the coasts. It's an oddly isolating feeling, like you're standing tiptoe on a small rock—and you could tip over and crash into the ocean anytime. “I love living here, but when something bad goes down, it's like, boom, all of a sudden you realize the ocean is not your natural habitat. It's not making things easy for you. We are very much living on the skin part of land. We don't know the ocean. We don't know the surface of the ocean. We don't know the depths of the ocean. There is a huge level of respect and mystery that the ocean commands.” The Blue, Beautiful World is Lord's fifth novel. Her previous books are Redemption in Indigo, which received the William L. Crawford and Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature and was nominated for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel. That was followed later by a sequel, Unraveling. While The Blue, Beautiful World is considered a standalone story, it is set in the Cygnus Beta universe, which is where two of her previous books, The Best of All Possible Worlds and The Galaxy Game, are also set. A decent amount of dosage buoys the already dangerously sipplable smoothness, highlighting the freshly scraped vanilla bean, chocolate and orange aromas. Barbadians were among the thousands of British West Indians who migrated to Cuba in the early twentieth century in search of work. They were drawn there by employment opportunities fueled largely by US investment in Cuban sugar plantations. Tell My Mother I Gone to Cuba: Stories of Early Twentieth-century Migration from Barbados (U West Indies Press, 2016) is their story. The migrants were citizens of the British Empire, and their ill-treatment in Cuba led to a diplomatic tiff between British and Cuban authorities. The author draws from contemporary newspaper articles, official records, journals and books to set the historical contexts which initiated this intra-Caribbean migratory wave. Through oral histories, it also gives voice to the migrants' compelling narratives of their experience in Cuba. One of the oral histories recorded in the book is that of the author's mother, who was born in Cuba of Barbadian parents.
