When you sit back and think about some of the centerpieces of hardcore punk in the early 2000's, Paint it Black will instantly come to mind. Especially in the Philadelphia area. Philadelphia has a long history of great bands that paved the way for what music music is today. Paint it Black fits that category. One of the most exciting news of this year is when Paint it Black decided to release "Famine." It was the band's first full-length record since 2008 and it did not miss. The biggest praise I can say about this group is that they have not lost their sound. I could have been told that this record was from 20+ years ago when Paint it Black was first forming and I would have believed it. They still have the same energy and are sticking to their roots. The band's story is known by now - they came together when another legendary Philadelphia based group, Kid Dynamite, decided to hang up the band tees, and call it quits. Dan Yemin was still had the same drive from the beginning of Kid Dynamite and wanted to continue making music, so he decided to turn things up a notch and form Paint it Black. Instead of sitting with a guitar on the stage, he decided to switch over to vocals, because no matter what, the band will continue as long as the singer is still there. It was a huge honor to have an established musician like Andy Nelson on. Punk music is engraved deep in his heart and it was a true pleasure to hear some of his inspirations. This included a fantastic conversation about Dillinger Four. "Famine" is a record I can play from start to finish, so while we were on the inspirations conversation, we discussed what he believes makes a "perfect" record. Continously, we really explored this album and heard about what it took to make this record. While the band doesn't tour much anymore, everyone should make it a point to see them if they are ever in your city. Spoiler alert- there might be a conversation about Nelson's other band, Ceremony, making a surprise appearance at Sound and Fury. Dan Yemin is a clinical psychologist (I somehow missed pointing that out in the intro, so pretend I mentioned it) and an ommitter of some of the highest statuture of punk records. Dan Yemin has not one but two bands with new albums out this year: Paint It Black‘s first album in 10 years (and first for Revelation), Famine, as well as the second LP by Open City (which also includes Paint It Black/Ceremony's Andy Nelson and members of Bridge and Tunnel, Titus Andronicus, and Ted Leo + the Pharmacists), Hands In The Honey Jar. With all this exciting stuff happening in his world, we invited him on the latest episode of the BrooklynVegan podcast. Throughout our hour-long conversation, we talked about longevity in punk and hardcore, bridging the gap between different generations, writing political/protest music in the face of hopelessness, what it means to Dan to be on Revelation Records, and much more from throughout Dan's rich history, from the early days of Lifetime to Kid Dynamite to the 20+ years he's spent playing guitar in Paint It Black. -- The BrooklynVegan Show is brought to you in part by DistroKid, a service for musicians that allows you to easily upload your music to all major streaming platforms. There’s a bunch of bands from the late 90s punk and emo scene that are hugely influential. Of them though, one could argue that Lifetime are the least well known. Which is odd given that many huge bands are on record as stating that they were directly influenced by this album in particular. Everyone from Saves the Day to Fall Out Boy, Thursday and Taking Back Sunday have all voiced their appreciation for this album over the years. Which until we did this episode, was news to Mark as he had always thought of them as more of a melodic hardcore band. This week we dive into the band’s rather short back catalogue. We talk about their beginnings, their break up, their reunion ten years later and their subsequent silence after releasing a “comeback” album in 2007. Resident punker Anna Goldthorp joins us this week to give her take on this album too, so we get a variety of opinions on here also. Jersey’s Best Dancers came out in 1997, which was an important year for emo as a whole, so we take some time to dig into this and talk about the other bands that were floating around the emo scene at the same time. Mark also gives us a potted history of Lifetime guitars Dan Yemin, his influence, the bands he formed after Lifetime and the way he helped shape an entirely new genre of hardcore on the back of Lifetime, Kid Dynamite and Paint in Black. But as ever folks, you have to decide the key thing here: is this an unsung classic? You decide. Vote below.
In episode 15, we speculate about the future of the Chameleon Club, play 6 Degrees to Dan Yemin, and find out Justin owns a flat screen TV. We're then lucky enough to be joined by Michael McDermott from the Bouncing Souls to talk about how he ended up joining the band, get some stories about the recording studio sessions, and find out what it's like being in a band with the legendary Joan Jett. Dan Yemin Recorded March 3, 2019 at Dan’s house in West PhiladelphiaIn 1986, Dan Yemen went to college at U. Michigan in Ann Arbor. Laughing Hyena’s was the biggest band in Ann Arbor at the time, no one was interested in playing fast / hardcore at the time in Michigan.Seeing Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Swans, and Dinosaur Jr. at the Blind Pig in Michigan, a very small venue, but would go home to NYC on vacations to go see Gorilla Biscuits and Anthrax. Why U. Michigan?…that seemed “the coolest” at the time. “The best thing that can happen in college is to go to class and get your mind blown.” “Find what you love and let it kill you”- Charles Bukowski Allen Ginsburg and his association with NAMBLA. Can you appreciate the art but not the artist? Marquis de Sade and Roman Polanski. Mein Kampf and should you read your enemy? Conservative punks and feeling like a crazy person in mainstream America. Chappaquiddick vs. ViceBachelors Degree in Psychology, why? Careers can break down into categories: altruism vs. obtaining capital. Rarely they overlap. “Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell.” -Edward Abbey Attractions to Psychology: -Help people. -Work from home. The idea of consciousness, which drives much of psychology, can be a nebulous concept for some. What are the molecular forces that dictate consciousness? Metaphysics? quantum? The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Humans are predictable. Wanting to understand why human’s are so self destructive.Reagan’s and W’s second term re-elections. Liberal elitism and Conservative propaganda. “If you find the rhetoric comforting enough, your critical thinking skills about outcomes go out the window.” Introverted and Extroverted is a grossly misunderstood concept. Bachelor’s degree U. Michigan finished in 1990, moved back to NJ and started Lifetime. Started Graduate School in 1992 at Widener University in Chester PA outside of Philadelphia in PsyD program to be a clinical therapist. The difference between the PhD and PsyD. Psychoanalysis is now considered an antiquated methodology. Being in therapy for five years in grad school while being trained as a therapist. As a therapist you speak colloquially, not scientifically. Vertical vs. Lateral thinking and giant pacific octopi. How do you approach a very complicated problem like a mental health trauma as a diagnostician? Well you become a listener first as a therapist. SSRIs and the placebo effect. “We are afraid of conflict, but always at war...And we no longer feel pain, that’s what the medicine’s for” It’s good to feel pain and prozac nation. You can not shoehorn or typecast people. Depression and forecasting the future. Don’t treat the disease, treat the person. Feeling threat from lower brain function. The Lone Wolf Myth and other American delusions. No one is going to save you…but that does not mean that no one is going to help you. Lifetime broke up in 1998 during Grad School, Kid Dynamite starts. Juggling internships, grad school, studying in the van, and extensive touring. The cynicism of Paint it Black and reconciling anger. 2001: 33 year old Yemen: Has a stroke, gets diagnosed with an auto immune disease that requires prescription blood thinners, gets a divorce, 9/11 and Iraq….Dan starts a new band…Grief and Fury Cultivating authentic dialogs through therapy. Depression in Hardcore and why you should go to therapy.&n

Dan Yemin/August 20, 2013 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Dan Yemin of the bands Lifetime, Kid Dynamite, and Paint It Black as well as others. Dan didn’t grow up in Philadelphia, but he’s lived here for 21 years. Dan’s played in three very popular bands and, into his forties, retains a tremendous enthusiasm for music and life. His devotion to the DIY ethos is still firmly in place. We talk about his upbringing surrounded by books in North Jersey in the ’70s and early ’80s, his early love of music beginning with hard rock, his discovery of punk through bands like The Clash in the early ’80s, his political and social aweness as well as veganism, playing in bands, seeing shows in dodgy places like City Gardens in Trenton, being inspired by the DIY ethos in the ’90s at the Jon Hiltz and Cabbage Collective shows and with bands such as Universal Order of Armageddon and John Henry West, the state of basement shows in Philly today, raising children, and scores of other subjects. Dan’s enthusiasm and positivity shine through in this interview. Addendum: The black-and-white photo was taken by Karen Kirchhoff in May 2014, the better part of a year after this interview was conducted. She took this photo so Dan could be included in her photo show at the Grindcore House begining on June 6, 2014. The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY!
