Today we're talking about the closing tracks (last songs) on albums that we believe to be amongst the best of the best in hardcore, metal and punk. A lost art that used to be placed with the intention of being the ultimate last statement and definitive piece of a record, but is now used as the place to dump the song that gets the least streams. We are here today to celebrate this beautiful pastime by paying tribute to these epic sonic journeys that end some of our favorite records ever. Enjoy. AND WE'RE BACK! This week we talk streamer drama, the Rolling Stone AOTY list, the dissolution of Sick New World and what it means for fests and its attendees. We also discuss the "effects" of Knocked Loose on late night TV on the culture and our opinions regarding its significance (if any). Listen in!!!!
This week: a sister-cast episode to a series we have called the Inbetweeners where we on the bands straddling the 80s and 90s in rock n' punk n' metal. This is more specific to metal in the 90s after feeling the impact of the overwhelming shifting of sounds during the decade. Metal became a dirty word by the mid-90s as grunge and alternative took over the rock world, but a new movement in the metal genre blended all of these influences with the heavy. Thus, we give you - 90s Alternative Metal! What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover mostly bands that have been forgotten including some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the heavy metal 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and metal bands that began during this time put it all in an industrial-strength metal blender. Hope ya dig! Songs this week include:Quicksand – “Thorn In My Side” from Manic Compression (1995)Fragile Porcelain Mice – “Brown Nickel” from Frostbiddin (1996)Therapy? – “Nasuea” from Nurse (1992)Corrosion Of Conformity – “Clean My Wounds” from Deliverance (1994)Prong – “Unconditional” from Prove You Wrong (1991)Fight – “I Am Alive” from A Small Deadly Space (1995)Life Of Agony – “This Time” from River Runs Red (1993)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
New York hardcore vocalist and straight edge pioneer Ray Cappo stopped by to tell us about “stepping up” as a dad, how kids teach us to love selflessly, and his book “From Punk to Monk”.
The season opener of Anti-Heroes starts off with a bang with the great Walter Schreifels ! (Uncle Wally” if you're nasty). Walter is a guitarist, songwriter, and producer. He has played with seminal hardcore bands Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits and is a founding member of Quicksand, Rival Schools, and Walking Concert. To say the Walter is and massive influence on Zach in an understatement. The two explore Walter's approach to songwriting and his desire to constantly innovate and surprise listeners. Walter shares his thoughts on live performances, the importance of not signaling mistakes on stage, and the challenges of being in a band. Zach and Walter discuss their past collaboration in the band The Vanishing Life, they touch on the evolution of Quicksand's sound, and we get a current run down of Walters rig and pedals. Ray Cappo is the singer of Youth Of Today and Shelter, two hardcore bands we grew up listening to. He's now a yoga teacher to the teachers and our new personal guru. His new book, From Punk To Monk, is out now. We chat about Marc Antony, which emails to respond to, moving upstate in 08, never having a real job, celibacy, pulling over on the side of the road to cook rice and lentils, the power of ghee, this missing ingredient in health food, removing low frequencies, how he felt on a raw diet, why is jiu-jitsu a sober man's sport? If he came up with his book's title himself, and we compare colored vinyl to non gold standard currency. instagram.com/raghunathyogi twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans howlonggone.com Learn more about your ad choices. KOPPOD's latest installment in their "Legacy of..." series delves into the influential sounds of 80s straight edge titans, Youth of Today. A band known for their raw energy and impactful lyrics, this edition promises to explore the impact and legacy of a group that helped shape the hardcore music genre and subculture. The Kings of Punk trace the band's journey from Danbury, CT to a central role in New York's punk underground alongside greats like Agnostic Front, with the group developing their sound and making a greater and greater impact on the American hardcore scene as they developed the straight edge ethos pioneered by hardcore musicians like Ian Mackaye and Kevin Seconds. The band's relationship with Krishna Consciousness and role in the early development of "Krishnacore" also receives some attention. Stay tuned for an in-depth journey through the roots of both the "Youth Crew" subculture and the subgenre associated with it. Website: kingsofpunk.com IG: @koppodofficial

as we're in the run up to that trade fair to end all trade fairs, South By Southwest, I've been made aware that some artists are boycotting the event due to SXSW's ties to Ray Of Today. While fully respecting the right of any performers, established or not, to make their own decisions, it's hard for me to understand the depth of animus toward Mr. Cappo. I mean, last time i checked yoga seemed universally popular. Sure, raw foodism isn't for everyone but it's not as though healthy eating is a prerequisite for enjoying the music of Youth Of Today or Shelter (contrary to popular belief, no one ever had a kebab knocked out of their hands at a Youth Of Today show, though that might have more to do with no one serving or selling kebabs at the venue). Everyone has to do what they believe is right but this seems a little hysterical, and you won't find a bigger critic of SXSW than me (save for Victor Wembanyama whose Austin showcase is scheduled for the day EVERYONE GOES HOME, WTF) (UPDATE : OK, it seems this has nothing to do with Ray Of Today and it's all about RAYTHEON's presence at SXSW. Which is a different matter entirely. Please ignore the post above, though I do think there's a lot to be said for exploring raw foodism)

We had a blast talking to touring drummer/musician Drew Thomas. Playing since the age of 13 Drew has been apart of the early NYC Hardcore scene in such bands as Youth Of Today, Bold, Into Another as well as and more recently the band Dead Heavens. Go check all of that out. Listen in and hear about the dreaded tour butt and all it comes with being on the road. This week I challenged Dylan to select a debut album from the year 1989. 1989 is already a tough year to choose an album from, and even harder when you add parameters around what you can select. He chose Gorilla Biscuit's Start Today, a seminal hardcore album and not a bad pick.Join our Patreon to get bonus audio, videos, blog posts, and access to our Discord for only $1 at patreon.com/punklottopodPodcast platforms and social media links at linktr.ee/punklottopodCall our voicemail line: 202-688-PUNKLeave us a review and rating on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Song clips featured on this episode:Gorilla Biscuits - New DirectionGorilla Biscuits - Things We SayGorilla Biscuits - Start Today

We finally got Walter! Our ol' buddy Walter Schreifels has been in more bands than you've had hot lunches and on this episode we tried (TRIED!) to get to all of them. We failed, of course — but here's some of what we DID get to: Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools, Youth Of Today, Gabe's “Good & Plenty” zine, recording “Slip”, CIV, Don Fury, The Ramones, Walter sings the hits, Gabe's Gorilla Biscuits jacket, Walter plays “La Grange”, and Ben whiffs hard on Van Halen. And oh yeah—before we forget. Thank you, Walter! https://deathwishinc.com/collections/iodine-recordings/products/quicksand-slip-deluxe-book

Charlie's guest for this epsiode of TRJ is Arne Rubinstein. Arne Rubinstein started his professional life at the coal face of youth trauma and misadventure in several Emergency Rooms in regional NSW. Through his own research, observations and investigations, Arne identified a critical stage in the development of our youths was missing - a traditional and public Rite of Passage. Charlie explores Arne's own regenerative journey into the world of this lost cultural ritual and development of a modern version. Head over here to see show notes and links.
On this week's podcast...Instead of discussing another depressing result, we decided to answer chat questions. We also discussed the UYCL title won by the U19 team, and what the future holds for this group of players. Lastly we look ahead to the Maritimo game.
One of the founding members of two of my all-time favorite Straight Edge Hardcore bands... "Youth Of Today" and "Judge" as well as "Project X" and "Shelter". He's done stints in "Bold", and "Gorilla Biscuits". He ran "Schizm" Records and currently owns a Straight Edge clothing line, "True Till Death". My guest on Episode 252 of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace Podcast is none other than John "Porcell" Porcelly (Paramananda Dasa), also known as The Hardcore Yogi. This conversation felt like it was 15 minutes long. We start off with his Yoga practice and where you can find him online to participate, then quickly go into how he grew up, his early influences, his first bands, the formation, break-up and reformation of "Youth Of Today", the same with "Judge", new music he's working on with a new band, new "Shelter" music and the indescribable feeling of when you hear that particular song at a specific time in your life that literally changes your entire path. This was an awesome opportunity. Chiara and Bianca D'Ambrosio are my delightful, sparkly guests. They are 16 year old identical twins who have been in the entertainment industry since they were 2 and a half. They are wise beyond their years, charming, grounded, kind and inspiring. They are YouTube sensations, have been featured in so many TV shows, music videos and movies and they are setting the world on fire with their unique blend of positivity and talent. Chiara and Bianca made their first music video at the age of 8 when they sang a song called "Let Your Light Shine", a song written by their uncle to take an anti bullying stance. We talk about how they were bullied when younger and how that has helped them grow into the people they are today. They also use their platform to encourage animal welfare, and they donate time, money and resources to other organizations including Alzheimer's research. These young women are the real deal, they truly care about making a difference through their art and through their actions. Both are headed off to college in the fall - still TBD as of this airing.Inspiring people can be found at any age, and if they are indicative of the future of our world, then we will be in good hands.SHINE ON!xxTo learn more about the Twins head to their website:https://dambrosiotwins.com/Instagram: @dambrosiotwinsME:www.kimduffselby.comInstagram: @kimduffselby
I have a love/hate relationship with New York Hardcore. The stuff I love – I love A LOT. The stuff I loathe… Well, let’s just focus on the stuff I love. On this mini-episode I ramble on about arguably the most widely known and influential “scene” spawned by hardcore-punk. This certainly isn’t a historical review […]
