What is the TRUE COST of your TRADESPEOPLE?A lot of tradies and builders misunderstand how much their people actually cost their business, and, because of that misunderstanding, they undercharge for the labour they're selling.Labour is one of the biggest costs in a trades business, and if you don't charge enough, you won't be profitable. You have to put time and energy into understanding your business's numbers and making sure you run your business profitably. How do you do this? I've made a tool called the Tradie Labour Cost Calculator - it calculates the REAL cost of tradespeople. Get it and calculate the cost of your people for how you pay them, and how you charge your customers. And start charging enough to cover their costs to your business. That's your job now: to make sure your business IS profitable.--------------------------------------Get the Tradie Labour Cost Calculator for Trades and Builders here: https://www.smallfish.com.au/tradies/true-cost/If you want more money (profit), more time (off work), and more freedom (from work, stress, responsibility), Book a Money Call: smallfish.com.au/tradies/money-call/FOLLOW US AT:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/smallfishcoach/Twitter: https://twitter.com/smallfishcoachInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/smallfishbusinesscoach/YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/smallfishau

Heat oven to 180 C fan bake. Grease and line a large loaf tin. 2. Briefly pulse sugar with lemon zest in food processor. 3. Cream the butter lemon sugar until really light and fluffy. Add in your eggs one at a time, beating between each and not worrying that it curdles a little, just move along and stir in the flour, baking powder, ground almonds and lemon juice. Make sure it's all well combined but don't overmix it. Lastly, fold in all the blueberries (dusted in a little flour). 4. Gently scrape batter into the tin and bake 45-55 more minutes or until a skewer comes out with a few crumbs clinging to it. Cover with foil during cooking if it darkens too much. Cool in the tin before carefully turning out. 5. Mix icing sugar with lemon juice and water to make a thin drizzle. 6. When loaf is completely cool drizzle over icing and serve in slices. In this episode of People-First Builders, host Fletcher Wimbush welcomes Brian Keller, CEO of Quest Building Corporation, a Wisconsin-based commercial contracting firm that's redefining what it means to grow a people-first construction business. Starting with four partners framing homes in 1998, Brian has spent the past 25 years scaling Quest into a 300-plus-person company that provides labor and materials for framing, trim, flooring, and countertops across Southern Wisconsin. Brian shares the behind-the-scenes story of how he transitioned from being a hands-on carpenter to a visionary CEO focused on servant leadership, talent development, and culture-driven growth. He discusses how hitting a wall in the company's expansion led to a complete rethinking of his leadership style, eventually leading to the development of in-house coaching and leadership training programs that now shape the next generation of leaders at Quest. In this wide-ranging conversation, Brian dives into: How Quest integrates recruiting, training, and coaching into every level of the business What it means to practice servant leadership in a trade-dominated industry The power of writing an employee persona to define company culture and hire the right people His "Build Program," an educational initiative designed to help trade business owners grow scalable, sustainable companies Tactical changes in recruiting strategy, including high school outreach, referral-driven hiring, and even in-house headhunting How the team developed a simple framework for defining roles through the "one-question" model Why he believes there's someone out there who loves every task—your job is to find them Whether you're a contractor, tradesperson, or business owner struggling to scale or attract top talent, this episode offers a roadmap for transforming your organization by investing in your people. Brian's story is a masterclass in letting go, leading with purpose, and building a business that lasts through values, not just volume.

The trades have often been seen as a fallback rather than a first-choice career. But what if we challenged that narrative and recognized the skilled trades as a vital, dignified profession with immense opportunity? James Faulkner, President and Founder of Site Max Systems, brings decades of experience bridging technology and the trades to shed light on how we can elevate the workforce from within. His passion for creating environments where every worker feels respected and empowered makes him a leading voice in the industry's transformation. James understands the unique challenges faced by tradespeople—many enter the field as a Plan B or C, influenced by family history and societal perceptions. Yet, he believes that with the right leadership and support, these workers can find meaning, growth, and pride in their careers. His work at Site Max Systems focuses on empowering field crews with tools and programs that help them dream bigger and achieve more. In this episode of The People Strategy Podcast, Traci Austin and James dive into the realities and opportunities of today's trades workforce. They discuss how parental perceptions shape career choices, why rebranding the trades is critical, and how leaders can connect with what truly motivates their teams.
