In this episode, Stephen Anderson sits down with Emmanuelle Buecher Hall, a science teacher at Mansfield State High School in Brisbane. A former marine biologist who's researched jellyfish in South Africa and sailed the world with her family, Emmanuelle now brings real scientists into her school to spark curiosity in students. Stephen first heard her speak at the Future of Education Conference, then organized a trip for his Nanango students to attend one of her after-school science talks—a trip that left a lasting impression. We dive into her journey, her innovative incursions program, and how she's inspiring the next generation of scientists, one curious mind at a time.   Key Topics Discussed From Marine Biology to the Classroom Emmanuelle shares her winding path—from studying jellyfish in Cape Town to teaching science in Brisbane—proving it's never a straight line to inspiring students. Scientists in School: The Incursions Program Learn how Emmanuelle invites scientists—over 50 in five years!—to Mansfield for informal talks on topics from volcanoes to quantum physics, open to all curious students. Beyond the Curriculum: Fostering Curiosity Forget marks—this is about passion. Emmanuelle explains how real-world science exposure helps students discover what they love, no textbook required. Tips for Teachers: Starting Your Own Program Emmanuelle offers practical advice on reaching out to scientists and adapting her model for other schools or subjects—like tech or engineering.   A Regional Road Trip to Brisbane Stephen reflects on bringing Nanango students to Mansfield and how regional schools can tap into this big-city science buzz.    Links and Resources: • Mansfield State High School: www.mansfieldshs.eq.edu.au (Check for school programs and events) • Contact Emmanuelle Buecher Hall: Via School Website • Future of Education Conference: https://www.thefutureofeducationsummit.com/ • DATTA Queensland: www.dattaqld.org.au    Connect With Us: ● Host: Stephen Anderson – podcast@dattaqld.org.au (mailto:podcast@dattaqld.org.au)

Inbetweeners are the animators who draw the pages in between the lead animators' key frames. The in between doesn't get a lot of attention, but it is essential to move the animation forward. The same concept applies to the “in between era” that connects Walt Disney's passing to the Disney Renaissance. A tumultuous time period which often only gets a few chapters in history and is usually known only for mediocre box-office hits, now has its own book. Courtney and Emily welcome storyboard artist, screenwriter, director, and author, Stephen Anderson, to talk about that period that took us from the Walt Disney era to the Disney Renaissance in his book, “Disney In-Between: The Lost Years 1966-1986.” Anderson's book gives you an in depth history of lessons animators, writers, directors, and studio executives learned while navigating how to run the Disney studio and Disney brand without Walt.  Follow Our Reading Journey On Social Media! And to wrap up this batch of episodes on the most awkward time period in Disney history, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1976 to cover an example of Disney's most reliably lucrative (or at least, least reliably un-lucrative) genre at the time, the dumb-as-rocks slapstick-heavy live-action comedy! And what a comedy it was, assembling more exclamation-point-worthy TV stars than a primetime variety special - Ed Asner! Don Knotts! Tim Conway! Tom Bosley! Bob Crane! Dick Van Patten! Dick Butkus! The Guy Who Voiced The Cat From Outer Space! - and then casting them all in a motion picture where the REAL star is a dumb mule who somehow gets drafted as an NFL placekicker through the use of Air Bud logic twenty years before Air Bud. How could they possibly screw that up? Welp, dull dialogue, a meandering story, muddled character motivations, instantly forgettable songs, an inept fumbling of the anti-bigotry message, a side character who should've died inexplicably living, a pointless B-plot where two birds and a caterpillar do third-rate Tom & Jerry shtick, and what the hell, why not throw in some incompetent studio mismanagement that drove about a dozen animators to resign and form their own studio while we're at it, that's how. In this episode, Ralph and Luc spotlight an environmental success story: the Montreal Protocol's role in healing the ozone layer. We draw comparisons to the pitfalls of the IPCC's COP process and try to derive a diplomatic blueprint for climate policy. We look into the science of how ozone and chlorine works in the stratosphere, the history of the activist scientists (Sherwood Roland and Mario Molina) who first sounded the alarm about CFC's destruction of the ozone layer, and the work of technocrats in devising their replacement. And for our topic, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1977, the summer when Star Wars had the unmitigated audacity to dominate the box office 35 years before Disney owned it. The only competition Disney had that summer was a Herbie sequel and an animated talking mice movie, so the Disney execs thought "Hey, y'know what Walt would've done? He would've paired the animated talking mice movie with a 48 minutes of documentary-style footage of a bear and a raccoon in the woods just kinda wandering around, narrated by an obscure country singer who, for thoroughly unclear reasons, is named 'Mayf Nutter.'
