In July 1970, 3 young men from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia -- Kenny Novak, David Burrows, Terry Burt -- left on a camping trip in the highlands of Cape Breton. Episode 307: On Friday, July 10th, 1970, around 7 a.m., near Ludlow, Maine, 45 kilometres from the border with Canada, the crew aboard a northbound Bangor & Aroostook Railway train noticed something lying on the tracks ahead. They thought at first it might be trash but reacted quickly regardless. Despite the immediate application of the brakes, the locomotive, towing 19 heavy boxcars, could not stop in time to avoid a collision. The objects on the tracks were sleeping bags containing three young males. All appeared to be in their teens or early twenties. The bodies were found without official identification, and among them, they carried just over 5 dollars in Canadian cash. After a very brief investigation, the Aroostook County Sheriff, Darrell Crandall, said he considered the deaths either accidental or a group suicide pact. The young men were soon identified as Kenny Novak (fifteen) and David Burrows (seventeen), both from Sydney River and Terry Burt (twenty) of Whitney Pier, in Sydney, Nova Scotia. It was discovered that they had hitchhiked to the location, but they were a long way from home. Their families initially had no idea why they would cross the border. There were no indications that any of the three were suicidal. Why were they there? If their deaths were accidental, how had they not heard the train approaching? And why would they have chosen to sleep on the train tracks? Information soon came to light that there may have been a darker reason for their journey, leading to speculation that the three might have been murdered and placed on the tracks to make their deaths appear accidental. Their families and friends are still looking for answers. Ever noticed how your “carbon neutral” coffee tickles the taste buds just that little bit more than your bog standard brew? From coffee producers to cafes, the industry is falling over itself to show us how much it cares about the future of our planet. But all is not always quite as it seems… So in this episode we're delving into the murky world of “greenwashing.” What is it? What's being done about it? And with so much else going on in the world, is it really that big of a deal?To help guide us through all the greenwashing grey areas, Jools and Scott are joined by environmental journalist David Burrows who goes in search of elephants and tigers in the cafes of Edinburgh. Miles Lockwood from the Advertising Standards Authority reveals how some alternative milk companies have been found to be greenwashing. And we learn when to be smug and when to be sceptical in the face of an environmental bombardment.Armed with these tips, we hope you will be able to spot greenwashing next time you buy your coffee! —--Join our Patreon to support the show and win a free premium hand grinder! https://bit.ly/3vrispx Check out David's writing on Foodservice Footprint (https://bit.ly/3qqBnQK) and follow him on LinkedIn (https://bit.ly/3u8yq8V)Follow Elliot Day (https://bit.ly/3NRMmvS) and Bean & Bud on (https://bit.ly/3LCl7DC) on Instagram. The Man Who Went to Heaven (2021)

Boys' Bible Study

Since the dawn of Christian mass media and pop culture, people have been fascinated by stories of those who gained supernatural insight into the realms of life after death, but came back to earth to tell the tale. Near death experiences are a common vehicle for this, and have provided fodder for many popular books, movies, and daytime talk show appearences over the years. Notably, a young boy named Colton Burpo provided the vision for HEAVEN IS FOR REAL, a 2010 New York Times best selling book that got adapted into a film of the same name that we've previously reviewed for our show. Last year, we received a powerful new addition to this canon -- the completely fictionalized story of David Burrows, the titular MAN WHO WENT TO HEAVEN. David is a grocery store employee who was shot in a robbery attempt and died on the operating table for 20 minutes, during which time he visited heaven and learned of the spiritual destinations of many of his loved ones on earth. Heaven is depicted in the most incredible way in this movie -- CGI renderings of humans and angels look like genuinely beautiful y2k rave visuals, or Second Life avatars. The film is full of funny and shocking moments, including shows within a show (Dean Cain cameos as a doubting pastor on a TV show titled “Heaven!”). The film offers some wild commentary on abortion and criticizes spiritual leaders who deny the experiences of the common man. It's one of the most compelling films we've watched for our podcast, and we hope you enjoy our review!
