Was the Iraq War the exception or the rule? Throughout the twentieth century, Labour governments have been involved in some of Britain's most disastrous colonial acts: the partition of India, the counter-insurgency in Malaya, and the Nakba. So, what can we expect this time? Eleanor Penny asks David Wearing, author of AngloArabia: Why Gulf Wealth […]
Does the US decision to pause a bomb shipment to Israel because of concerns over its incursion into Rafah mark a U-turn in Washington's stance on the war in Gaza? A US spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Israel hasn't “fully addressed” its concerns over the needs of around 1 million civilians sheltering in Gaza's southernmost city. Many people have fled there because of Israel's assault on other parts of the country, which it launched in retaliation for the October 7 attacks, in which 1200 people died. Around 35,000 Palestinians are thought to have lost their lives in the conflict. Is Britain sliding to war in the Middle East? The RAF has once again taken part in US led attacks on military sites in Yemen from where Houthi fighters have been targeting cargo vessels in the Red Sea - one of the world's most important commercial shipping routes. This followed similar action on the 11 January.Prime Minister Rishi Sunak insists the UK's military action amounts to nothing more than self defence; and that its unconnected to the conflict between Israel and Gaza. But is that how it will be seen in Yemen itself and more widely in the Middle East? If the Houthi's step up their attacks is there a risk of further escalation, perhaps involving the Houthi's backers Iran, and their rivals Saudi Arabia.Adrian Goldberg hears from David Wearing, an expert on UK foreign relations in the Middle East and Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Sussex. After the Houthis staged attacks on shipping in the Red Sea - claiming a defence of Palestinians - Britain and the US have staged attacks on Yemen. But who are the Houthis, what is the war in Yemen all about - and why would more bombs on Yemen work given a Saudi-led coalition armed and backed by the US and Britain has bombed the country for years? What's the actual alternative to bombing - and what kind of catastrophe could beckon?I'm joined by the brilliant Dr. David Wearing, Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Sussex and author of AngloArabia.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. David Wearing joins PTO to discuss his article 'The myth of the reforming monarch: Orientalism, racial capitalism, and UK support for the Arab Gulf monarchies' We talked about the nature of Britain's relationship with the Gulf states, and why it's a mistake to see Western support for brutal, absolutist authority in the region as simply self-consciously cynical realpolitik. And we also talked about the nature of the Sportswashing debate and what's missing from mainstream discussion of the purchase of football clubs such as Manchester City, Newcastle United and Paris St. Germain by the gulf states. This week, the front page of the Daily Mail screamed “Outrage as Oxford students plan to axe queen”. In reality, a group of postgrads voted to take down a portrait of the queen in a single common room, in a single Oxford college, because of the portrait's association with the UK's colonial history. Whether it's the interior decor of student common rooms or athletes taking the knee in support of Black Lives Matter, by the time you listen to this podcast, new outrages are constantly emerging. How did we get here? In the middle of a pandemic, why do these debates take up so much media space? And how should progressives respond? On this episode of #TyksySour Michael Walker is joined by Huda Elmi and David Wearing to talk anti-imperialism, anti-colonialism, and Britain’s role in the world with a Corbyn-led government.
Fifty years ago Enoch Powell gave his racist 'Rivers of Blood' speech. In it he trailed themes that have given undead life to right-wing populism ever since: effete elites in the service of alien subversion, violent crime as an inevitable accompaniment to demographic change, a respectable and long-suffering civilization on the brink of cataclysmic collapse. It's all there and was given the full BBC radio treatment in April of this year on Archive on Four. We talked with academic and author David Wearing about the speech, its framing by the BBC, and how the monsters Powell summoned in 1968 still walk among us. Music by Makaih Beats. David’s article for the New Socialist that we mention in the show: https://newsocialist.org.uk/stephen-lawrence-and-hostile-environment/.
In the first episode of the CAAT Podcast series, we introduce the UK's arms trade. What arms does the UK produce? Who do UK companies sell arms to? And what is the role of the government in the arms trade? Joining us to introduce these issues are two leading academics: David Wearing, who is working on a book about UK-Saudi-Gulf relations, and Anna Stavrianakis, author of 'Taking aim at the arms trade, NGOs, global civil society and the world military order'. As with all our contributors, their opinions are their own and do not necessarily reflect those of Campaign Against Arms Trade. To find out more about the arms trade and to take action against it visit: www.caat.org.uk/issues/introduction.
In Episode 5 of Media Democracy we speak to David Wearing about British foreign policy and its underlying political economy, how it is discussed in the mainstream media and what the opportunities are for challenging a dangerous elite policy consensus.
