Larry Ostola talks to Tim Cook about his book, The Good Allies: How Canada and the United States Fought Together to Defeat Fascism during the Second World War. The Good Allies is a compelling narrative by Canada's leading war historian, exploring the evolving relationship between Canada and the United States during World War II. Initially marked by rivalry and mutual suspicion, the two nations eventually forged a strong alliance, working together to defeat the fascist threat. The book examines how Canada, though smaller and overshadowed by the US as a global power, flourished alongside its powerful neighbor. It highlights the cooperation, sacrifice, and shared struggles that defined their partnership during the war and shaped their enduring alliance. Tim Cook is Chief Historian and Director of Research at the Canadian War Museum. His bestselling books have won multiple awards, including four Ottawa Book Awards for Literary Non-Fiction and two C.P. Stacey Awards for the best book in Canadian military history. In 2008 he won the J.W. Dafoe Prize for At the Sharp End and again in 2018 for Vimy: The Battle and the Legend. Shock Troops won the 2009 Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction. Cook is a frequent commentator in the media, and a member of the Royal Society of Canada and the Order of Canada. And when it does, it can be a lonely experience. Even if someone's at home, who wants to listen to you groaning about a trade you missed, some heavy drawdown you can't face losing? My next guest is a veteran trader - Clive Arneil. Meet Dierdre Wolownick, a New York City native with a 44-year journey that is as diverse as her talents. She is not just a linguistic virtuoso but also a distinguished writer, publishing award-winning works through her independent company. As a lifelong musician, Dierdre's repertoire includes flute, clarinet, and keyboard. In her pursuit of adventure, she founded and directed the West Sacramento Community Orchestra for four years, leaving an indelible mark on the local arts community. At 55, she embraced running, conquering marathons and half-marathons. Venturing into rock climbing at 59, she aimed to connect with her son, Alex Honnold, a renowned climber, unknowingly setting the stage for history. At 66, Dierdre became the oldest woman to conquer Yosemite's El Capitan, alongside her son famous for "Free Solo." In 2019, she chronicled this daring adventure in "The Sharp End of Life." Celebrating her 70th birthday in 2021, Dierdre ascended El Capitan again, solidifying her trailblazer status. Her exploits, documented in "Climbing into Life," a 2023 release, have garnered global attention. Dierdre is not just a climber; she's Alex Honnold's mother, adding another layer to her story. Breaking records at 66, she climbed El Capitan twice. Her climbing journey, starting at 60, reflects a desire to understand and connect with her son's passion, making her a revered figure in Yosemite Valley. Join us on Papa Bear Hikes as we explore the extraordinary life of Dierdre Wolownick—a linguist, writer, musician, and history-making climber.

Originally aired April 26, 2019Long before her son was doing some of the most incredible climbing in the world and her daughter was solo bike touring around the west, Dierdre was living a life full of adventure. From moving to different countries and starting orchestras from scratch to raising two kids by herself and working much more than fulltime, Dierdre enjoyed taking on out-of-the-box challenges and seeing what she's made of. Never to be one to think of age as a limitation, Dierdre started running at the age of 55 and began climbing at 58.  Within a few years, she was running marathons and by 66 she became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan, the same rock that her son, Alex, would free solo. It's evident in both her children that they were raised by someone with lots of room to live outside the box. Have you ever thought that it was too late to achieve a goal? That being past 50 years old meant that certain things were out of your reach forever? This week on Pursue Your Spark, our guest, Dierdre Wolownick, tells us how we can truly achieve anything we put our mind to, even when we're older than 70.  4 Steps To Achieve Any Goal, No Matter Your Age Dierdre is an author, mother, professor, marathoner, and musician, speaks 8 languages, plays several instruments, and founded and conducted the West Sacramento Orchestra, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. She is also the oldest woman to climb Yosemite's El Capitan, the iconic 3,200-foot granite wall in Yosemite National Park. She broke her record after scaling the rock face when she was 66 and for a second time on her 70th birthday. What a legend! Despite what people think, life after 50 is still a life worth enjoying with fun and adventure. Dierdre shredded her fears and started climbing at 59! What is something you've been dreaming of doing but felt as if the time has passed? Whatever it is, take a page from Dierdre's book, and do it anyways by having the courage, journaling your dreams, getting rid of stifling beliefs, and doing the unexpected. Eliminate any thought or belief that keeps you in the box you have put yourself in. Three of these fears mentioned in the podcast relate to time, uncertainty, and age. What if I don't have enough time to pursue my spark after dealing with family duties? What if I am unsure about my dreams and desires or don't even know what goals I'd like to achieve? What if I truly am too old? Dierdre explains that you can always make time for what's important if you want it badly enough. She also encourages us to recall what made us happy as a child and go back to explore that passion. In doing so, we should embrace aging, as it is a natural part of life, and make the time to keep being exhilarated by the child-like activities we did when we were young. She has so much more advice to give us on this topic, but you should finish the podcast and then grab a copy of her book,  The Sharp End of Life: A Mother's Story. As you heard here, you will learn how to “…make friends with fear in all its forms” and catapult into your brave future, where all of your “crazy” goals are met, regardless of your age. In part 2 of our conversation, Dierdre talks about her big climb up El Capitan and the journey of overcoming her fear to accomplish that feat at 66 and then again at 70 years old. “Only you know what you're capable of”, she says, “and you'll never know if you don't try it.” Dierdre has created a life after 65 that reflects her belief that age is irrelevant, that anybody can do anything by little baby steps. One of the challenges is to know yourself and block out the media's representation of aging, to have the courage to think outside of the box. She is passionate about developing the mindset of digging deep and recognizing that the battle is you against you. This episode challenges the typical idea of what an older woman can do. Today on Feminine Roadmap we are talking to the amazing Dierdre Wolownick about the sharp end of life. Dierdre is the mother of famed free solo climber Alex Honnold. In part one of our two part conversation Dierdre lays the groundwork of her own story of finding out what she was capable of by testing the beliefs she has about herself. As a mother of two extreme athletes, she has encouraged and watched her children achieve extraordinary things. In her own life she's been a writer, author, symphony orchestra conductor, linguist, traveler, professor and much more. This story brings us to her latest accomplishments of becoming a runner and a climber after the age of 60. Dierdre challenged not only the media view of women of a certain age but her own beliefs about what she “could” do. After a brief but seemingly insignificant interaction with her son about a one mile run she had just completed, she was faced with the idea that she could do more. If you can run one mile, you can run one and a half was all he said. This one minute exchange became the turning point to her life and unbeknownst to her, her future of becoming a rock climber. Tune in to hear the first [art of Dierdre's inspiring story of what one woman found herself capable of a little beyond midlife when others are winding down. We take a look at São Tomé and Príncipe, a country on the sharp end of climate change - the BBC's Tamasin Ford, interviews its president, Carlos Vila Nova who wants the world to do more than just talk. We also hear how the island - the entirety of which is a massive volcano - is home to lush, tropical rainforest and some of the most important biodiversity in Africa; Príncipe is a UNESCO biosphere because of its unique environment. But despite being breathtakingly beautiful, it's poor with the smallest economy on the continent and around 90% of its budget comes from foreign donors, topped up by tourism - we hear how the pandemic has affected this vital part of the economy. Perhaps the biggest threat to the nation though is rising sea levels; in São Tomé and Principé, 4% of the land mass has already been lost to the Atlantic Ocean with entire houses being washed away; Tamasin visits one in Principé. The country is already doing what it can - more than two thirds of the islands are protected national parks and by the end of this year the government hopes to have written into law the country's first ever marine protected areas, but will it be enough?

Alex's Dad, she says, was a person with undiagnosed Asperger's Syndrome. “He was in a bubble and no one could get in.” I ask Dierdre about “stonewalling,” a term we use in marriage and relationship therapy to describe being emotionally shut off to others, and whether this applies to goals Alex sets for himself.
