Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair talk with Martin Robinson, a leading thinker and guide in missional practice and theology. Together they explore what the word “missional” meant for Lesslie Newbigin in contrast to what it is often taken to mean now - a strategy to save the church. Martin explores the impact of modernity and its current unravelling which has brought many, especially the young, to a place of despair and pessimism about the future, relationships, economics and the environment. Yet, through the many church planting stories he is witnessing, he is identifying signs of hope. Martin sees something stirring in those who can come with openness and responsiveness; those who bring a desire for personal encounter with God. Recognising that some institutionalised churches have had a tendency to fossilise the divine, Martin believes we need to recover a culture of expectation - that God is active and at work in our lives.Born of missionary parents in India, Martin returned home to the UK where he grew up in Scotland and then moved to England. After settling in Birmingham, he followed in his father's footsteps in church planting while completing a PhD in history with a focus on Pentecostal movements. He later joined the Bible Society where he was the Director of Mission and Theology. During this time, he worked with Lesslie Newbigin especially in the shaping of conferences (Swanwick, 1992) and the conversations that emerged from that event in terms of the Gospel and our Culture movements. Later, Martin, along with his wife, Lynda, developed and formed ForMission College to equip leaders in the transformation of their communities. Martin is Moderator Emeritus of the Fellowship of Churches of Christ denomination, co-founder of Rowheath Pavilion Church, and co-founder of the Journal of Missional Practice. Currently, Martin works particularly closely in the fields of church planting, and is part of the expert church planting team at Engage West Midlands, working especially among immigrant communities in the UK. He continues to resource the work of missional theology and challenge the churches in this era of vast social transformation. He is the author of many books.- Links -For Alan J Roxburgh:http://alanroxburgh.com/abouthttps://www.themissionalnetwork.com/author/alan-roxburgh/https://journalofmissionalpractice.com/alan-roxburghX.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/alanjroxburgh?lang=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alan.roxburgh.127/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thecommonsnetwork Selected books:Joining God in the Great Unraveling Leadership, God's Agency and Disruptions Joining God, Remaking Church, Changing the World: The New Shape of the Church in Our Time For Jenny Sinclair:Website: https://togetherforthecommongood.co.uk/from-jenny-sinclairLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenny-sinclair-0589783b/X.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/T4CGFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TogetherForTheCommonGoodUKInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/t4cg_insta/For Martin Robinson:https://www.engageuk.org.uk/https://the-fcc.org/about/https://www.pavilionchurch.org.uk/https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-robinson-78a55ab/?originalSubdomain=ukhttps://togetherforthecommongood.co.uk/stories/from-space-to-placehttps://togetherforthecommongood.co.uk/stories/pavilionSelected books:The Place of the ParishPractices for the Refounding of God's People: The Missional Challenge of the West (with Alan Roxburgh)Invading Secular Space: Strategies for Tomorrow's ChurchThe Faith of the Unbeliever: Grappling with the Beliefs and Unbeliefs That Shape Our SocietyPlanting Mission Shaped Churches TodayPlanting Tomorrow's Churches Today To Win the WestRediscovering the CeltsSacred Places, Pilgrim Paths  Get full access to Leaving Egypt at leavingegyptpodcast.substack.com/subscribe

Diversification is crucial in the mortgage industry to mitigate risks and avoid relying on a single client or industry. Building relationships with real estate companies can be an effective way to find prospects and convert them into clients. Temple's 2023 season has been a disappointment, but David Martin-Robinson's career has not. He's just the third tight end in the program's history to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in his time with the Owls, and the other two were Jeff Steeple and Randy Grossman, the latter of whom went on to win four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers.    We went 1-on-1 this week with Martin-Robinson to recap his time on North Broad Street and ask him about what's ahead as he prepares for what he hopes is his own NFL career, and you'll find out why he's very excited about Temple's future at his position with players like Peter Clarke, Reese Clark and Landon Morris.    And on the basketball court, we talked about how Temple's men's and women's teams can get back in the win column Wednesday as they host Ole Miss and St. Joe's in a Thanksgiving Eve doubleheader at the Liacouras Center.    In the mailbag, we answered questions about Stan Drayton's future, the best mascots in sports, and just about every Thanksgiving scenario you can think of.

Were you fortunate enough to make it down to EGX London this year? It was this past weekend, and, if you ask me, there was a nice vibe around the place. It was nice to be back playing games together relatively unimpeded by the pandemic, and the show is feeling much more like its old self again. But what caught our eye there?   That's what I'm talking to my two Weekly guests Martin Robinson and Liv Ngan about today. What did Liv think of Wo Long, did Martin like Street Fighter 6, and why was everyone talking about new card game Wildfrost?   Elsewhere in today's show, I catch us up on some of the reviews we've missed while we've been away - sorry for the gap in our programming, but I've had some time off - before getting onto what will probably be the hot topic of the week: the FIFA 23 review. It's the final FIFA-branded game, and there's a lot to both like, and loathe, about it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Another week ends, meaning it's time for another Weekly, the quick-talking podcast where we recap the week on Eurogamer for you. Remember, premium supporters of Eurogamer get episodes on Friday whereas everyone else listens from Monday. Find out more here: https://www.eurogamer.net/subscribe   Today on Weekly, Martin Robinson dives into Xenoblade Chronicles 3, a game he's just rated Essential and spent the last month playing. What's so good about it? And can I play it if I haven't played the others? We hear it from the horse's mouth. (Note: Martin is not actually a horse.)   Christian Donlan, meanwhile, takes us into the world of Rollderdrome, which looks to be another banger from London-based OlliOlli developer Roll7 - how does it do it? This game is a rollerskates shooter where you need to pull off tricks to power your combat. Donlan is very into it.    He's also quite into GTA Online, which he dipped into yesterday to try the new Paper Trail missions.   Also: I recall what it was like meeting Zzap!64 and GTA legend Gary Penn, who has some incredible stories to tell; and I give my thoughts on Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2, which was re-released with some improvements this week. We also talk Grand Theft Auto 6, following the Bloomberg/Schrier exposé earlier this week; and about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the remake of which has been postponed, seemingly, forever.   All that plus all of the other features, news and videos from around the site that caught my eye this week. This was Weekly and we'll see you next week.   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Friday, July 15. There will be a chance for rain early and a chance for rain at the end of the day Friday.  According to the National Weather Service there will be a 40 to 50 percent chance for rain in the Cedar Rapids area Friday morning, with the chance decreasing by 1 p.m. The chance for rain will spike up to around 30 percent Friday night. Otherwise it will be cloudy, with a high of 88 degrees and a low of 70 degrees. Emergency responders are continuing to search the Cedar River near Palisades-Kepler State Park for an 11-year-old girl, identified Thursday by the Linn County Sheriff's Office as Zyah Thomas of Cedar Rapids. Crews were called to the state park Wednesday afternoon when the girl reportedly went into the water and began to struggle, according to a new release. The search continued throughout the rest of Wednesday. In a tweet Thursday, the Sheriff's Office identified the girl by name and called the incident a drowning. Sheriff Brian Gardner said Thomas was visiting the beach area Wednesday with her family. Progress on a 640-acre solar farm near Coggon — approved by the Linn County Board of Supervisors after contentious public meetings — is on hold while a court resolves a case brought against the supervisors by a family who lives near the planned project. On Wednesday, the Iowa Utilities Board denied Coggon Solar LLC's request for a certificate of public convenience, use and necessity until the court acts. The certificate is the permit that authorizes Coggon Solar LLC to operate a public facility within the area and is typically for public utilities or similar entities. https://www.thegazette.com/local-government/linn-county-supervisors-vote-2-1-to-approve-coggon-solar-project/ (In January, the supervisors voted 2-1) to approve rezoning in the area to allow for the project. The approval meant that about 750 acres would be rezoned from agricultural to agricultural with a renewable energy overlay that expires after 35 years. In February, Martin Robinson, Paula Robinson, Tom Robinson and Laura Robinson filed an appeal and initiated a proceeding in Linn County District Court to challenge the zoning decision. The Robinsons had been present at several of the meetings about the solar project and had expressed concerns about the effect it might have on property values, among other criticisms. The Vinton Public Library, which has been closed this week afterhttps://www.thegazette.com/news/with-another-leader-leaving-vinton-public-library-closes-for-now/ ( losing its interim director )— and, before that, two directors in two years — will reopen for limited hours beginning Monday. The two directors left for other jobs amid https://www.thegazette.com/news/two-directors-quit-vinton-library-after-complaints-about-hirings-lgbtq-and-biden-books/ (city resident complaints about the library's display of LGBTQ books and books about Democratic President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris). The library will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Board members and the library's one part-time employee will take shifts to check out books and provide access to the library's computers, copier and fax machines. The board said they are also moving ahead on interviewing three candidates for the new director position.

The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1763 Birth of Jean-Paul Friedrich Richter, German Romantic writer. He's remembered for his humorous novels and stories. He once wrote, When one reads a poem in January, it is as lovely as when one goes for a walk in June.   1902 Birth of Harry Lutf Verne Fletcher, ("Luh-tf")(pen names John Garden and John Hereford), Engish writer. Harry wrote many books on gardening. In Purest Pleasure (1948), he wrote, Who has learned to garden who did not at the same time learn to be patient?   1917 Birth of Richard Henry Martin Robinson, gardener and professional horticultural photographer. He was regarded as one of the top gardeners of his generation. In 1955, Richard and his wife, Helen, began creating a spectacular garden at Hyde Hall set on 400 acres and nestled among the prairie wheat fields of Essex. Helen initially started gardening as a way to brighten up the place. Gardening at Hyde was hard. The landscape battles whipping winds and pitiful average yearly rainfalls. In summer, the clay soil is rock hard. In winter, whatever moisture there is, is locked in the suffocating clay. Early on, trees, pines, evergreens, and heathers were installed to provide structure and winter interest. Foxtail lilies and roses added color that the garden so desperately needed. Together, Richard and Helen transformed Hyde Hall into a garden masterpiece. In 1993, nearly forty years after the Robinsons bought Hyde Hall, the garden was gifted to the RHS.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Essentials of Garden Design by John Brookes This book came out in 2008, and it is a garden classic. John Brookes was a master garden designer who perfected his craft over five decades. And although John passed away in 2018, he is still regarded as one of the significant garden-makers of the late 20th century. John's books (like today's recommendation) continue to inspire and instruct gardeners with simple and timeless wisdom. John always began his design projects with his famous grid system. And in this book, The Essentials of Garden Design, he walks you through that process as well as everything you need - the tools, the techniques, the plants, the building materials - to create a garden that looks like it belongs in the landscape. So whether you're planning a large installation or just something small and functional, you can't go wrong with John as your guide. This book is 192 pages of garden design mastery from a man who firmly believed that gardens were about the people who lived in them. You can get a copy of The Essentials of Garden Design by John Brookes and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for $2.51.   Botanic Spark 1905 Birth of Phyllis McGinley, American poet, and writer of children's books. Her poems were often light-hearted and humorous, offering a clever examination of daily life in the suburbs. In 1961, Phyllis won the Pulitzer prize. She won a Pulitzer prize in 1961 for her book, Times Three, which featured seventy poems written over three decades in the mid-1900s. A gardener, Phyllis once wrote in The Province of the Heart (1959). The trouble with gardening is that it does not remain an avocation.  It becomes an obsession. And here's a little poem Phyllis wrote called Daylight Savings Time. In spring when maple buds are red, We turn the clock an hour ahead; Which means each April that arrives, We lose an hour out of our lives. Who cares? When autumn birds in flocks Fly southward, back we turn the clocks, And so regain a lovely thing That missing hour we lost in spring.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.
