Two Refuseniks from Tel Aviv talk candidly about Israeli society's reaction to their movement and the supports they've created to make it easier for more youth to refuse enlistment in the IDF.Tal Mitnik and Einat Gerlitz share their story, while also acknowledging despite all they've been through during their stints in military prison, it can't compare to the situation of Palestinian youth their age.Comparisons are made to Canadian settlers; both our states' being predicated on ethnic cleansing and colonial violence, and the struggle to decolonize spaces from within while understanding our role in maintaining that same colonial state.Their assessment of Israeli society at the moment, and the possibilities for peace are instructive, but difficult to hear. These two Palestinian Solidarity Activists have been at the front lines for a ceasefire for 15 months, a Free Palestine even longer. How are they feeling about seeing people return to the north of Gaza, or about Trump's comments about what's next for the region? What makes a perfect victim? For Palestinians fighting to keep their stories alive in the media, it often feels that they must audition for the sympathies of their Western audiences. If they don't fit the mould - then their voices are ignored. In 2021, Mohammed al-Kurd was catapulted into the spotlight when his family's home in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah was being forcefully evicted by Israeli settlers.Since then, he's been one of the most outspoken and unapologetic Palestinian voices, using his social media presence, as well as his poetry and journalism, to push back against the media's skewed narratives of his people. He is the author of the celebrated poetry collection 'Rifqa', and the upcoming book 'Perfect Victims'.This week on The Big Picture Podcast, we sit down with Mohammed al-Kurd to talk about flipping the script on how Palestinians are expected to speak and behave in the public eye. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode, and any guests you'd like us to have on our show. John Allen Gay and A.J. Manuzzi interview Ari Tolany, Director of the Security Assistance, Technology and the Arms Trade program at the Center for International Policy.
It has now been over a year since Israel embarked on its genocidal campaign in Gaza. In that time, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been killed or injured. Furnishing Israel with more than just diplomatic cover, Western governments have kept up a steady supply of military aid and equipment, actively enabling the wholesale slaughter of Palestinians. Our governments' complicity cannot be ignored or overstated. At the heart of questions around how and why Britain and the US are continuing to arm Israel lies the international arms trade. Thinking more about how this corrupting, deadly industry operates, and how we might resist it, is vital - something that Palestinians understand only too well: one year ago, Palestinian trade unions reiterated their urgent global call to action, imploring workers across the world to halt the sale of weapons to Israel. We are joined on the show by Ahmed Alnaouq, Andrew Feinstein and Anna Stavrianakis, to discuss how weapons sales to Israel function as a direct expression of state policy; how the arms industry corrupts our own democratic political processes; and the socio-economic opportunity cost of our governments' commitment to militarism. We also talk about the direct impact these weapons have had on life in Gaza, long before October 7th 2023; and the work that We Are Not Numbers is doing to give young Palestinians agency through sharing their stories. --- Ahmed Alnaouq is a former Palestinian diplomat who served in the Palestinian Mission to the UK. He is the co-founder of We Are Not Numbers, which empowers Palestinian youth to share their stories globally. Ahmed holds a masters degree in International Journalism from Leeds University, and his work has been featured in media outlets including the Washington Post, the New Arab, and Gulf News. Andrew Feinstein is the executive director of Shadow World Investigations. Andrew resigned as an African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament in South Africa in 2001, in protest at the government's refusal to investigate corruption in a $10 billion arms deal. His first book, After the Party, reveals the impact of this deal. He also wrote the critically acclaimed book The Shadow World: Inside the Global Arms Trade, and worked on an award-winning feature documentary, Shadow World. Anna Stavrianakis is director of research and strategy at Shadow World Investigations, and Professor of International Relations at the University of Sussex. Ahmed, Andrew and Anna are all contributors to the new book, Monstrous Anger of the Guns: How the Global Arms Trade is Ruining the World and What We Can Do About It, which is available now from Pluto Press.
How porous are sanctions? The war in Ukraine has familiarised this show with the concept of dual-use products, like the washing machine whose computer chip can power a lethal drone. FRANCE 24's investigative news website The Observers got reports from citizen journalists in Iran during the 2022 "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests about shotgun cartridges made in France and used in the crackdown on peaceful protesters. We track their journey from the factory to the streets. Speaking of sanctions, we ask about an Iran that's been living under them for years, that's holding its breath ahead of Israel's forthcoming response to its missile salvos and to a US election with possible consequences on the scale of pressure and isolation.Watch our investigation in fullRepression in Iran, ammunition made in France
A two-year investigation by FRANCE 24 has revealed that hunting cartridges produced by the French-Italian ammunition manufacturer Cheddite were used in Iran during the violent crackdown on the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests in 2022. The investigation uncovers how these cartridges are widely available in Iran, despite European sanctions imposed in 2011. It appears the ammunition may have been routed through Turkey, where Cheddite at one point held shares in a weapons manufacturing company. This investigation, broadcast by FRANCE 24, sheds light on the dealings that allowed the ammunition to reach Iranian soil, despite international sanctions.

David Packouz's life started as a fairly normal one. When he was 23 he began working with his childhood friend Efraim in his new arms business. They began securing government contracts to supply arms to the US military during the second Gulf War. To increase their revenue and contracts they began sourcing ammunitions from China via Albania which was illegal to do. When the US Government caught on to what they were doing, it resulted in federal indictments, betrayal and prison time. David's story was told in the Hollywood blockbuster movie WAR DOGS. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Ukraine's Western allies committed to sending weapons, ammunition and military hardware to Kyiv. In France, this has meant a major increase in industrial production. French President Emmanuel Macron has said France has entered a "wartime economy", whereby the defence industry is producing more and faster than before. But what does a "wartime economy" actually mean in practice? And how is the "Made in France" arms industry trying to adapt to this increased demand? FRANCE 24's Claire Paccalin and Fadile Bhayat report.

Josh Paul created a big stir when he resigned from the US State Department in protest of the sale of weapons to Israel. In a highly publicised letter, he said the rush to arm Israel's war in Gaza was “shortsighted, destructive, unjust and contradictory” The former arms trade expert, who helped the US train the Iraqi police and the Palestinian Authority, and oversaw weapons deals to a number of controversial regimes, says he's now speaking out in the hopes he can pressure the US into changing its foreign policy. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode, and any guests you'd like us to have on our show. More than 30 Palestinian trade unions have issued a united call to stop arming Israel. This call comes in light of Israel's intensified assault on Palestinians over the past weeks, and particularly the unfolding genocide in Gaza. Activists in Canada have responded by blockading weapons facilities in Ontario and Quebec and informing Canadians about the flow of weapons from Canada to Israel. We talk with Rachel Small, an organizer with World Beyond War.
In this episode Ethan sits down with Chris Coyne at the Mercatus Markets and Society Conference to discuss his research on noxious markets. While the global arms industry may only account for about one percent of global trade, it's important to note what that one percent actually buys. Beyond the price tags on the weapons themselves, arms and arms sales have a tremendous impact on all other aspects of global trade, and on relations between trade partners and competitors. This week's episode is a collaboration between journalist Paul Cochrane and Latitude Adjustment Podcast. Our guest, Andrew Feinstein, is the author of the best-selling book, "The Shadow World: Inside the Global Arms Trade", published in 2011. In his review Noam Chomsky writes, "This shocking expose unveils a shadow world of corruption, greed, slaughter, and other horrors, tawdry and gruesome in its criminality. It must be brought to a quick and final end". Shadow World was turned into an award winning documentary film, premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2016. Andrew currently resides in the UK with his wife and children, and much of his current work is focused on Shadow World Investigations, an investigative news website focused on global corruption, often involving, but not limited to, the global arms trade. This week, I speak with a Jodie of Palestine Action – a UK-based network of activists using sustained direct action to shut down businesses profiting off of the violent oppression of Palestinians. They've already shut down two facilities owned and operated by Elbit Systems, and their tireless work has led to the cancellation of 280 million worth of British military contracts with Israel. Jodie paints a vivid picture of what it looks like to engage in direct action. We break down the meaning of direct action and how it differs from participating in protests. We discuss what this has looked like for Palestine Action, from lock-ons to large-scale property damage used to shut down facilities by making these blood-soaked capitalist enterprises untenable & unprofitable. Elbit Systems is Israel's largest weapons provider. They produce the drones that monitor and attack Palestinians as well as technology for the apartheid wall. This Israeli company advertises its products as “battle tested” because they've been used extensively against a captive Palestinian population. It uses Gaza as a “weapons testing lab” so that it can market and sell its products to oppressive regimes around the world. Their drones and weaponry have been used in Myanmar, Kashmir, and on the US-Mexico border wall. Although there is often opposition to individual wars, most people continue to believe that the arms industry is necessary in some form: to safeguard our security, provide jobs and stimulate the economy. Not only conservatives, but many progressives and liberals, support it for these reasons. Indefensible puts forward a devastating challenge to this conventional wisdom, which has normalized the existence of the most savage weapons of mass destruction ever known. Indefensible: Seven Myths that Sustain the Global Arms Trade (Zed Books, 2017) is the essential handbook for those who want to debunk the arguments of the industry and its supporters: deploying case studies, statistics and irrefutable evidence to demonstrate they are fundamentally flawed, both factually and logically. Far from protecting us, the book shows how the arms trade undermines our security by fanning the flames of war, terrorism and global instability. In countering these myths, the book points to ways in which we can combat the arms trade's malignant influence, reclaim our democracies and reshape our economies. The book can be read here for free.
