The message was delivered on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION What does it mean to truly be part of the “family of things”? This message takes us on a journey to explore our profound connection to the cosmos, our role in sustaining the only planet we call home, and the sacred interplay between energy, matter, and consciousness. By weaving together ancient wisdom, science, and a call to action, it challenges us to live in ways that honor all existence—not out of fear, but out of love for the extraordinary world that sustains us. Humanity needs a group project. From the cave paintings at Lascaux, and the pyramids of Giza, to the national parks of today, there is something beautiful about human beings working on something they will never see fully realized. I am by no means the first person to make this point, two millennia ago Cicero wrote about it, by quoting the poet Statius: “He plants his trees to serve a race to come,” Nowhere is this more apparent than in the dozens of Cathedrals I have visited during my numerous trips criss-crossing Europe.Given their intimidating size, one would be forgiven for being tempted to dismiss a cathedral as merely a tool intended to project church power. As a friend of mine is so fond of remarking on cathedrals, and their pipe organs in particular, “We got the biggest pile of rocks, and the loudest thing.” But to view these structures as only a church-led enterprise, one that common folk participated in as a last resort in the hope of getting a scrap of food, is to miss the evidence right before your eyes at many a cathedral.More than once I have stared up at a menagerie of fantastical gargoyles on the side of a gothic pile and seen something far more familiar. Doubtless you can bring an image of a traditional waterspout creature to mind, a stone dragon or lion with a gaping maw which vomits water during heavy rain. Now picture, instead of the pipe emerging from the jaws of a beast, it comes spouting fourth from the spread buttocks of a human figure. This image is rendered all the more amusing in its posture; clinging to the side of the cathedral in pose more reminiscent of a horny teenager's depiction of spiderman than anything one would associate with sanctity. Elsewhere I have seen Adam and Eve rendered with larger than usual breasts, genitals, and buttocks, a nursing baby Jesus with an all-too-knowing grin, and of course countless improbably shredded Christs. This last group often looks more like something from a recent Marvel film, than anything you'd plan on encountering at church. Please understand, I am not drawing your attention to all of this bawdy stonemasonry for mere jocularity, but rather to make a point. Cathedrals were such large enterprises, and took so long to complete that many details were either beneath the notice or beyond the care of their supervisors. I like to joke about this by remarking: “Remove the butt gargoyle? What do you want me to do? Climb up there and take out the flying buttress support?” But it is more than that, I believe some of these things were permitted in order to allow everyone to feel invested. These things were giant community art projects.Cathedrals often brought prosperity and tourism to the towns where they were constructed, especially if you could throw a relic or two in there to encourage pilgrimage. The downside was that they were usually being built in whatever time could be spared from the important tasks of day to day life. It often took decades, if not centuries, to build a cathedral. You could work your entire life on one of these structures and not live to see it have a roof. They were truly investments in the lives of hypothetical future people you would never see.It is my personal hope that the colonization of space could be our modern cathedral. I owe this comparison to none other than Ray Bradbury who noted that both enterprises are a “vast, ambitious, multigenerational undertaking, a shared vision to work toward together as a culture.” This sentiment obviously fills the pre-2006 installments of the popular Star Trek franchise, but has been seen more in more recent works. Take for instance Neal Stephenson's 2015 doorstop of a tome SevenEves. This book depicts millions of people working to launch a precious few into space, before a disastrous event wipes out all life on earth. But these are pie-in-the-literal-sky science fiction musings! Perhaps we should be focusing on more earthly problems? Sure you could make that argument. But I find it interesting to look at what an intelligent young person could hope for if they studied hard in the fifties and sixties. They could work at NASA, they could be involved with sending people to the moon! In the middle of the last century intelligent people were drawn to the promise of space travel, and they congregated in the United States to help realize that dream. Out of the ashes of the Second World War, a new space age would dawn. For a moment it seemed that it would, but now? If you work hard in science and math you could one day go work for Amazon, Google, or Tesla; enriching a billionaire! Wow! What Fun! The only reason those giant technology companies exist is because previous generations were sold the promise of outer space, only to find themselves chained to desks solving earthly supply chain and video streaming problems. It's no wonder the world seems to be descending into chaos, we're making our finest minds do drudge work.We seem to have lost sight of the potential we possess, we have stopped looking up. We have once again become obsessed with our problems down here on our pale blue dot. I am sympathetic to those who insist that earthly poverty is a huge issue, that climate change threatens us all, that there is no “Planet B.” But I think if we only look down we risk falling into petty in-fighting and sectarian conflict. We need to strive for the stars for the exact same reason people living in tiny mud huts poured so much of themselves into their cathedrals. Because they make us look upward at something greater than we could ever hope to achieve alone. I find that when I'm looking up, it is easy to overlook my differences with the person next to me. To stand side-by-side and wonder. So, let's go build a cathedral.
This podcast features two experts in environmental/energy/land use law analyzing what became a legal Rubik's Cube with many different moving pieces to be realigned by attorneys and clients. New policy is changing electric power to move most of the U.S. economy rapidly to utilize electric power in lieu of conventional direct use of fossil fuels for heating, vehicles, and industry. This fundamental transformation occurs amid demands for much more electric power for artificial intelligence, data centers, and cryptocurrency mining, with the Supreme Court in West Virginia v. EPA declaring that “The electric power sector is among the largest in the U.S. economy, with links to every other sector.” This podcast identifies multiple resulting new challenges and provides legal “workarounds” regardless of who sits in the White House. French President Macron warned the U.S. Congress: “We're killing our planet. Let us face it. There is no Planet B.” As the United States now rapidly responds to move to clean energy to power our future, in mid-2024 the Supreme Court fundamentally altered legal options: creating a new major questions doctrine fundamentally reducing presidential power particularly related to energy, clean air, and climate; critically “overruling” the most cited Supreme Court decision in the last 50 years, which also involves the environment eliminating the ability of certain federal agencies enforcing laws to impose civil fines; and extending dramatically the statute of limitations to challenge federal regulations affecting environment/energy/land-use (renewable electricity is less dense and requires five to ten times as much land as conventional generation of electricity) This podcast provides a user-friendly road map through this fast-realigning legal maze, and for those interested this podcast is backed up by a new ABA book (Powering the Future: A Lawyer's Guide to Clean Energy) containing all precedent and providing state-by-state charts analyzing barriers, legal differences, and how lawyers may take advantage of achievable workarounds region-by-region.

The Other Side of the Story with Tom Harris and Todd Royal – One of the reasons the climate alarmist movement has been so successful is that their messages are very simple – “We must reduce ‘carbon pollution' to save the Earth from catastrophic global warming.” “There is no Planet B.” “I want you to panic!” Messages countering these unscientific and misleading assertions are usually too complex for the...

IMEG's Anchila Monks is featured in the third episode in a series about the firm's refreshed Sustainability Plan. A business developer with IMEG, Anchila is also the Sustainability Plan's champion in the firm's office in Portland, OR, where she collaborates with her co-workers to implement the plan's mandated and optional initiatives. Anchila recalls what her grandmother told her at a young age: “She said that heaven and earth and humanity are different manifestations of one life energy, and that we only have one planet—and there is no Planet B.” For Anchila, this was the beginning of her understanding of the importance of taking care of the environment. Living and working in Portland—one of the country's greenest communities—makes some of the Sustainability Plan's optional initiatives easier to accomplish, such as biking and carpooling to work, recycling, and composting. The office also has “adopted a block” and formed a “Team Portland” group to participate in a community clean-up day. Like other IMEG Sustainability Champions, Anchila is passionate about her role, and urges people everywhere to not procrastinate in helping to save the environment. “Do not waste time,” she says. “This is the right time to do it.”

Here are some summary notes from the podcast interview: Zion Salam is the author of the new sci-fi spiritual novel "With Love From Planet B", releasing November 11, 2023. The book is set in the year 2085, where climate change has ravaged Earth. Corporations rule and two heroines try to save the world by teleporting to an alternate dimension. Zion has a medical background and was always interested in science, quantum physics, and spirituality. She wrote the book over several years, going through extensive edits and rewrites. The book touches on her experiences growing up in Pakistan and immigrating to the U.S. The characters reflect parts of her own spiritual journey and desire to make a difference. Key topics in the book include humanity's possible extinction, climate refugees, controlling corporations, teleportation technology, quantum physics, dreams, and spiritual awakening. Zion calls it a "spiritual sci-fi novel" that goes beyond dystopian tropes to focus on love, connection, and humanity's potential. She hints at important spiritual insights layered throughout. She wrote it to fill a void for more meaningful, intelligent sci-fi, especially lesbian sci-fi, that takes readers deeper spiritually. The book is meant to be transformative. Zion is excited to finally publish her debut novel and hopes it inspires readers to see humanity's positive potential during difficult times.
What is scientific knowledge? How can it be relayed to the general public in our era of social media and fake information? What is the role of science in our society? To answer these questions, Pedro Pinto interviews Brian Cox in this episode of “It's Not That Simple”, a podcast by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation. A renowned experimental physicist, Brian Cox is the Professor of Particle Physics at Manchester University, The Royal Society Professor for Public Engagement in Science, and a key part of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. He is also the presenter of the blockbuster TV shows Wonders of the Universe, The Planets, Wonders of Life, and Forces of Nature, each looking at the fundamental science behind everything from stars and planets to atoms and microbiology. Cox has also presented Stargazing, Space Hoppers, The Big Bang, and numerous editions of Horizon. His books accompanying the Wonders of... series have become huge bestsellers, as did his co-authored titles Why Does E=mc2? and The Quantum Universe. Cox also co-hosts Radio 4's comedy and science show Infinite Monkey Cage, and tours with a solo lecture show, Universal: Adventures in Space and Time. In this episode, Cox explores the difference between reliable knowledge and opinion, as well as the challenges social media and its “noise” pose to scientists in communicating their findings to the general public. He discusses the issue of climate change and how astronomy shows us how both insignificant and special we are as a species. Cox also addresses the possibility of colonizing a “Planet B”, before explaining how remote the possibility of an Artificial Intelligence becoming sentient is. On the other, he warns of the very serious risks associated with letting AI making decisions for us. Cox also explains what black holes are and why he's so fascinated by them. Finally, he considers the likelihood of extraterrestrial life, in a conversation well worth listening to. More on this topic • Why Does E=mc²? David Wearing joins PTO to discuss his article 'The myth of the reforming monarch: Orientalism, racial capitalism, and UK support for the Arab Gulf monarchies' We talked about the nature of Britain's relationship with the Gulf states, and why it's a mistake to see Western support for brutal, absolutist authority in the region as simply self-consciously cynical realpolitik. And we also talked about the nature of the Sportswashing debate and what's missing from mainstream discussion of the purchase of football clubs such as Manchester City, Newcastle United and Paris St. Germain by the gulf states. Planet Earth is on Red Alert, and there is no Planet B. If there is one thing that will unify humanity and keeps us all awake at night, it is the climate emergency and its' existential threat to the human species. #DontChooseExtinction is not just a compelling and catchy name for a climate action advertising campaign. It is the message that Boaz Paldi is spreading worldwide as the UNDP's Chief Creative Officer. The UN Secretary General António de Guterres and the United Nations are deeply concerned about the climate crisis and the inaction or inadequate action by major stakeholders to help course correct. Boaz Paldi joins Anne Pratt on the show to share ‘the story behind the story' of #Don't Choose Extinction,” and ways we can become part of the solution to save humanity.Love the show? In Episode 26 of Cult and Culture, Justin and Luke catch up with two members of short-lived 90s hardcore band End of the Line, Cory Linstrum (John Henry West) and Matt Anderson (Gravity Records, Heroin). They talk about coming up DIY, seeing Born Against play in their own garage, working with Ebullition to release their only album (now being reissued by Three One G), and the second (third? fourth?) wave of hardcore that the 90s brought with it. They also talk about the violence happening in San Diego at that time, the magic of the legendary venue Che Cafe and the scene it fostered, and the way that music helps keep people connected over decades in ways that nothing else can. They also dive deeper into Gravity Records, and some of the memorable releases including Man is the Bastard, Earthless, and Antioch Arrow. The concept of Cult and Culture began as a short segment created by Justin Pearson, an internationally known musician, record label owner (Three One G Records), author, and actor. He is perhaps best known as bassist for bands such as Dead Cross, The Locust, and Some Girls as well as vocalist for Deaf Club, Swing Kids, and Planet B. Having traveled the world touring in hardcore and punk bands since age 15, Justin has come to know and work with a broad spectrum of captivating personalities and brilliant minds, many of which are key figures in the realm of popular culture and cult followings alike-- from being on the soundtrack to John Waters' Cecil B. Demented, to acting in an Asia Argento's Incompresa, to playing in Dead Cross with Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo. Cult and Culture arose as an opportunity to document bits and pieces of the DIY-driven, subversive world of art Pearson identifies with- one that many are not aware of or perhaps have misconceptions about. Eventually, Pearson joined up with producer and bandmate Luke Henshaw (Sonido De La Frontera, Planet B, Satanic Planet, First Power Crew) to build the idea into a proper podcast, now recorded at his own PengOne Studios in San Diego. Henshaw has collaborated with hip hop legends such as Invisible Skratch Piklz' D-Styles and Q-Bert, Kool Keith, in addition to being immersed in the world of Cumbia alongside Sonido De La Frontera bandmate Karlos Paez (B Side Players). He also recently scored the music for upcoming documentary Sk8face, which tells the history of skateboard graphics. In this way, both Justin and Luke are influenced by a diverse array of subcultures that all have connected roots. John Waters was one of the first people interviewed for the podcast- an icon of both cult and culture. Since then, guests have included a broad scope of musicians, producers, authors, and anyone passionate about what they do-- anyone from Grammy-winning musician Juan Alderete (Mars Volta, Racer X, creator of Pedals And Effects) to actor Michael Malarkey (Vampire Diaries, Project Bluebook), from San Diego Black Panther Party members to longtime partners Nicola and Adam in electro-punk band ADULT. or The Satanic Temple cofounder Lucien Greaves (who would go on to form Satanic Planet with Luke and Justin as a direct result of their podcast conversation). The focus is not intended to be solely on people in any one realm, and because guests are friends and family, the conversations are frank, informal yet well-informed, and genuine. Pearson and Henshaw seek to achieve a casual openness, blurring lines between traditional guest and host. Cult and Culture is available on iTunes and SoundCloud and new episodes will be premiering on Brooklyn Vegan. You can find the latest episode premiere here. Links to the previous podcasts are below.
