This weeks episode of the True North Racing Podcast we are joined by the Wildman Cody Wilds. 2023 saw the 17 year old move from the smaller stock cars (i.e Legends, Mini Trucks & Jr. Late Models) to a full size stock car in the super stocks at Delaware Speedway. Though Wilds suffered a season ending injury in a violent wreck Cody is getting better each day and is on track to be back behind a super stock in 2024. We learned how Cody got into racing from the first time when he was going to the track when he was just 4 years old. Cody asked his dad the following day to get a race car and shortly there after the young Wildman was behind the wheel of a stock car. From there Cody was been addicted to this crazy sport and continues to learn each day. From watching footage to talking with other drivers to understand more about not only his car but how to be more competitive.

We have now passed fully into the triple digits of episodes for the podcast and we couldn't be happier. Hope you enjoyed listening to last weeks episode featuring Adam Ross. As we move forward with the show we now turn our attention to episode 101 of the True North Racing Podcast featuring this weeks guest Bryan Batty. Bryan races in the OSCAAR Modifieds a touring division in Ontario. We learned about Bryan getting started in motorsports by working with Whitlock Motorsports during the CASCAR/ NASCAR Canadian Tire Series before getting started behind the wheel. We talked to Bryan about his start behind the wheel racing dirt carts down in the states as well as back home. We learned about how Bryan got into the OSCAAR Modifieds and what he enjoyed about the division. We enjoyed talking to Bryan and we hope to see him back on track this weekend at Delaware Speedway. At the beginning of the episode Jon and Megan broke down their weekends talking about the nights events at Flamboro Speedway. How the Meet The Drivers night was cancelled due to the rain. Cam K & Ol' Smooth Graydon Bunn are back with a fresh new episode talking about Delaware Speedway, the people in the NASCAR Canada community, and send their thank yous out to their listeners, fans, and those who made it possible for the team to make it to the NASCAR events.

Jon and Megan returned to the their studios this week a day later than usual but to say it's a good episode is an understatement. We got the chance to sit down with the Crew Chief and head of the social media department at CowPro Motorsports we talked with Scott "Scooter" Pro. Before bringing in Scott. Megan and Jon talked about their almost off weekend. Jon talked about taking him and Jacklyn went Go-Karting for the first time. Jon talked about almost not getting to wear his new helmet, Passing Jacklyn. Megan and Jon discussed about setting up a Go-Kart event in the off season. Should we consider Chases win at the Go-Kart Track a feature win? Megan getting to competitive go-karting. With only a couple short weekends left in the race season left in the race year it's hard to believe it's almost over as Delaware Speedway crowned two champions on Friday night in their Pro Late Model division won by #03 Ray Morneau Jr. The Super Stocks also capped off their season with #43 Jae Doerr grabbing Championship. Velocity's Fall weekend feature event was rained out and the track is looking to make up a rain date to cap of their 2022 season. It's Championship night at Flamboro Speedway this coming weekend with the Canadian Vintage Modifieds, Pure Stocks and Mini Stocks crowning their champions for the season. During intermission all cars are invited to join the Canadian Vintage Modifieds as they will do some parade laps with Christmas lights and glow sticks in support of Scott Tonelli's Mental Health Initiative at Grand River Hospital. Now to the good stuff. This weeks guest being Scott Pro also known as "Scooter". Scooter is the crew chief for the #13 Pontiac in the OSCAAR Qwick Wick Hot Rod Series. We talked to Scooter about how he got started into racing and his recent background into short track racing and how they got involved into the Hot Rod Series. When you’re going 200 mph (320 kph) the choices you make can be the difference between life and death. Or at the very least, between finishing the race safely and having your car towed off the track. Kevin Bulmer knows a thing or two about car racing. Kevin was once the General Manager of a place called the Delaware Speedway, the first-ever Nascar sanctioned track in Canada. He also knows first hand that the choices we make in our life have consequences. In his case those choices led to problems with alcohol, a divorce, and poor health that resulted from his drive to climb the corporate ladder. NASCAR Fans will recognize Cole Pearn as the Crew Chief for the Furniture Row Racing Team and driver, Martin Truex Jr. Cole’s story is a terrific example of knowing yourself, trusting your gut and going with what feels right to you. I first got to know Cole when he was just a teenager racing not only at Delaware Speedway (in Ontario, Canada), but also in what used to be called the CASCAR Super Series (which later became the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, now known as the NASCAR Pinty’s Series). He was regarded as one of the true up-and-coming talents in Canadian stock car racing at the time. Cole continued to race through the balance of his high school days and into and through his time at University. Eventually, his heart told him to pack up and move to North Carolina to somehow find his way in the door of a NASCAR team. And that’s exactly what he did, finding an entry-level spot at Richard Childress Racing and working his way up from there. Fast forward to the time of this recording, where Martin Truex Jr. was named Nascar.com’s Driver of the Year after the 2016 season with Cole receiving an honourable mention for Crew Chief of the Year. In the two seasons since Cole took over atop the Furniture Row Racing pit box, the team has won five times (once in 2015 and four times in 2016) and took second place in the closest finish in the history of the Daytona 500 in February of 2016. Cole's is a fascinating story and a great example of how important it is to really know yourself, understand what it is that is important to you and what can happen when you take action to pursue it. Some of the key points that stood out to me from my time with Cole include: 1. Go with your gut. Trust your intuition. 2. Run your own race. To do this, you’ve got to really know yourself and what’s important to you. 3. Pursuit. Action. Once you know who you are and what you want, you’ve got to go after it. Jim Cressman is a professional baseball umpire and retired sportswriter. He still umpires and has been doing so for over 50 years. I know Jim best as a sportswriter. For decades, Jim covered sports for the London Free Press, the daily paper in the city where we live. He was responsible for all kinds of topics, including the old London Tigers baseball team we had here for a time (an Eastern League AA affiliate of the Detroit Tigers), the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, all kinds of major league sporting events, and even auto racing coverage out at the stock car track near here called Delaware Speedway, where I worked in various capacities for about a decade and where I got to know Jim best. Listening to Jim talk about how they used to get stories written and submitted is a whole lot of fun. If you have any interest at all in news media, journalism or reporting, you’ll love it. Umpiring, on the other hand, took Jim to the Olympics and other international events, as well as through baseball’s minor leagues. Had work visas been more readily available, Jim may never have been a sportswriter to begin with, as it’s likely he would have ended up as an umpire in the major leagues. We discuss that, too. Some of the key steps in the journey that I took away from my time with Jim included: 1. Perspective. Whether it’s with writing or umpiring or anything else, we’re all looking at life through a different lense. That fact alone can explain a lot of “taken out of context” complaints. 2. What you love most seems to stay with you. In Jim’s case, it’s umpiring, and an appreciation for sharing new experiences with other people. 3. The art of actually being there & the value of human connection. These two things put together answered some questions I’d had about Jim for years, like how come he’s not written a book or started a blog?
