In Jim's words, dementia strips you of the most important things: your memory and recognition of your loved ones, as well as your ability to make choices for your own wellbeing. Dementia affects the lives of more than 421,000 individual Australians, and countless family members, loved ones and carers. There is no known cure for dementia, however there are treatments for many of the symptoms. This led him to take on freelance marketing projects, which eventually flourished into a full-fledged business. Like many entrepreneurs, Jim faced the challenge of pricing his services when the freelance work started pouring in. Initially, he quoted a modest $500, thinking it was a great price. However, as he sat down to do the work and calculated the amount of hours it took, he realized he could have made more working at Dunkin Donuts. That was his first lesson in raising agency prices. An Agency Owner's Journey from Salesman to Strategic Leader The realization that he needed to fire himself from sales was a pivotal moment in Jim's entrepreneurial journey. After getting a taste of what it was to work on the business instead of in the business, he recognized the need to step back from certain roles to focus on higher-level strategic tasks that would drive the growth of the business. Around this time, Jim's current partner interviewed for a junior role. Although he was overqualified for the position, he expressed his willingness to discuss other ways he could bring value to the agency, which eventually led to his appointment as COO. By hiring a COO specializing in conversion rate optimization, Jim saw the value of bringing in experts to take his agency to the next level. He quickly recognized the importance of not getting in the way and using that time to focus on other aspects of the business. The process of firing yourself from various roles within the business can be challenging and uncomfortable. It requires letting go of control, trusting others to handle important aspects of the business, and investing time and resources into training and development. In Jim's experience, once he started he quickly began looking for other roles where he could replace himself. He says the trick is to start small and work yourself up to what you feel will be most difficult to delegate, which in his case was sales. The key is to keep in mind you're working to build a business where you're not just another cog in the machine. Missteps and Lessons in Crafting a Successful Agency Sales Team A key aspect of success in firing himself from sales was Jim's focus on building a strong sales team. However, it was not a seamless process and he acknowledges there were a few mistakes along the way. One notable misstep was hiring a salesperson without ensuring there was enough lead volume to support them. In hindsight, Jim recognizes this as a glaring oversight on his part as the business owner. Additionally, he still didn't understand the differences between different roles in the sales team, like what a hunter does versus a closer. He also hired people and provided them with the agency's CRM, processes, and automation, instead of focusing on getting a solid sales script and making sure his new hires could close. One specific challenge Jim has found while training his sales team to replace him is customers who want to have an in-depth conversation about aspects of their services that not every salesperson would understand. In these cases, you don't necessarily have to have a specialist. Instead, build these types of scenarios into your training. Some valuable strategies agency owners can implement include creating a repository of success stories that your sales team can reference during sales calls and offering a foot-in-the-door. This way, they'll have valuable examples of past successes to demonstrate the agency's ability and get a little bit more into detail regarding how your agency would approach their particular challenge. The Power of the Foot-in-the-Door Offer Jim recently saw an encouraging success that has made him reconsider his entire pricing model to incorporate a foot-in-the-door strategy. His current sales funnel typically involves two calls, a conversion optimization assessment, and a monthly package priced at 10k. This process usually takes about 30 days to close. However, Jim recently had a conversation with a potential client and, sensing their specific needs, he spontaneously offered a foot-in-the-door and managed to sell a smaller package within just 72 hours, a huge jump. Thus far, it is a one-case-only success, but the results are encouraging and worth exploring. To create an effective a foot-in-the-door you should consider the following: What's the perceived value to the client? Is it easy to create for the agency? Does it lead to the logical next step? Is it being co-created with the prospect? Think about things you're already doing and that you can slice off your core service and go through each of these items to come up with a valuable offer. Finally, remember the prospect is going through their own struggles and by providing a foot-in-the-door you are offering prospects the opportunity to address these questions with a smaller commitment, making the final decision a no-brainer for them. Becoming Your Own Client and Crafting the Ultimate Success Story One innovative strategy Jim has been testing recently was leveraging profits from his agency to buy a B2C company that he could use as a model for approaching potential clients in the same industry. This unique approach allows agency owners to not only diversify their portfolio but also gain valuable insights and experience that can be applied to their core business. This can provide a new revenue stream, access to a different customer base, and opportunities for cross-promotion and collaboration. In Jim's case, he identified an opportunity to acquire 50% of a client's company, enabling his agency to handle the marketing side and become their own client. This strategic move has doubled their thought leadership content, as they now create content around the newly acquired B2C company in addition to their existing content. Acquiring a B2C company can be a great opportunity for agencies to gain valuable insights into customer behavior, marketing strategies, and product development, which can be applied to its offerings. Moreover, by showcasing the success and growth of the acquired company, agency owners can demonstrate their expertise and capabilities to potential clients, making it easier to secure new business. This strategy can also open up new opportunities for partnerships, collaborations, and joint ventures with other businesses in the industry. A little over a week ago, Hurricane Ian made landfall just a couple of miles from Jim's house and nobody heard from him for 48 hours or so. They were fighting through over 150mph winds and storm surges, and Jim was left with no power or water. Experiencing the hurricane first-hand, there are a few things he would have done differently had he known what he does now, and he's sharing his experience and takeaways from this event this week. In the face of adversity, there aren't any easy decisions or solutions. The first plausible step is to simply take action. It is OK to grieve. It is OK to be sad about what you have experienced. But regardless of the experience, what really matters is your attitude. It is always liberating to take ownership of your situation, and whatever that adversity is, it is possible to not let it win, to not let it beat you. Persistency is key, and you need to be bigger, step up – not down – and come out of the adversity on the other side. And that's what Jim and Nick are diving deeper into in this episode. In this episode, Jim and Nick talk about adversity, crisis, and what to do when you are faced with either of these in your own life. Jim Witherbee is a former naval aviator and test pilot turned astronaut and author. In the course of his extraordinary career, Jim flew on six space flight missions and commanded and landed the Space Shuttle five times. He was also involved in the recovery efforts for the Challenger and Columbia Space Shuttle explosions and the Deepwater Horizon disaster. In his book, Controlling Risk in a Dangerous World; 30 Techniques for Operating Excellence, Jim shares the knowledge he gained from his extensive experience of managing risk in exceptionally volatile situations and advises organizations on the best way to minimize risk and optimize performance.  In this episode, you'll hear from Jim Wetherbee on;(00:19:54) The three steps for reducing risk. For Jim, the essential components of risk management consist of identifying the hazard, assessing the risk, and implementing controls. In addition, he believes the ability to anticipate the prospect of the worst possible failure happening at the worst possible time makes it easier to get things right and prevent even unpredictable accidents from occurring.(00:38:11) The process of accountability. In Jim's opinion, accountability is a two-way process, which requires team leaders to ask employees about any problems they encounter at work. We saw Jim in Detroit recently where we hosted a social equity workshop and Jim and I chatted a lot about what's happening in the industry. NCIA has a DEI Committee as well as a DEI Scholarship Program for licensees. We start by talking about those state-by-state programs that are writing social equity licensing provisions into their state laws at the get-go rather than as an afterthought. Massachusetts was one of the first to do so. That's an encouraging step in the right direction at the state level. In Jim's home state in Washington, there are still some struggles there in getting full equity in their cannabis program. With that, we talk more about what Jim is seeing on the ground there. As far as what else is on the horizon for our industry, I get really excited when we see more sophisticated research and products with various cannabinoids, not just the old CBD and THC “salt and pepper” combo. Twee van hen zijn Rinske van de Goor en huisarts in opleiding Bernard Leenstra, zij kregen meerdere doodsverwensingen. Bij Op1 schuiven zij aan en vertellen ze hoe ze ondanks de dreiging hun werk uitvoeren en wat er wat hen betreft moet veranderen.  (38:00) Terwijl demonstraties door radicale corona-activisten steeds grimmiger worden, krijgt de politie vaker te maken met kritiek. And why do companies purchase tools that require tailoring for their specific needs? On today's episode of the Digital Enterprise Society podcast, Craig Brown and Thom Singer welcome Jim Brogoitti, a fellow failed retiree who understands the demands and limitations of customization.  He shares his experience with customization, his approach that works for meeting a variety of CM2 requirements and how to effectively create a career that you just may not want to retire from.    On today's podcast, you will learn: Are any tools truly ready to use out of the box?  In Jim's experience, tools had to be ready to use right out of the box.  Customization was allowed but configuration was not.  The expectation was set from the beginning that customization was not an option.    The pitfalls of customization versus configuration Customization is not free, and it requires continuing support costs.  Customization is not easily measured, making it difficult to know how to quantify it.  Everything should start with requirements and those requirements should be documented and balanced against company needs.    Meeting a variety of CM2 requirements  There are set requirements addressing what a PLM system has to be able to perform as well as a set of requirements on the tool side.  Everyone tends to look at tool requirements in a slightly different way.  Once everyone understands what the requirements are, those requirements are weighted based on importance, criticality and ease of implementation.  A great solution vendor takes the time to listen to the needs of a cross industry forum and then works to meet those needs.    Solving the problem of boredom in retirement Like Craig, Jim is effectively failing at retirement.  He currently works at the Institute of Process Excellence and is aiming to build an out-of-the-box tool that is IPX compliant targeted for small businesses.  Jim is leveraging the tools available to him to make this goal a reality.  Because of the pandemic, everyone has become more comfortable with working from home and collaborating online.    Advice for a mobile and flexible career Identify your replacement so that you can leave a job behind when the next opportunity presents itself. Keep your ears open for opportunities.  Don't be afraid to take risks.  Trust your team even when there is no training for your position available.  Listen more than you speak. 82. How to Use Passion Marketing and Value-Based Pricing to Monetize a Business

Jim Sterne is a digital marketing and analytics expert with 35 years of experience. He is the author of Social Media Metrics, and a dozen books on advertising, marketing, customer service, email marketing, and web analytics.  He is the founder of the Marketing Analytics Summit, the co-founder of the Digital Analytics Association, and the creator of the Analytics Cohort Mutual Mentorship Program.  In today's episode, we'll discuss passion marketing and learn Jim's number one monetization strategy: value-based pricing.  Jim Sterne's Story: Understanding Customers  Jim's first job out of college was in customer service. “My exposure to the world of business was being an advocate for the customer. It was my job to take the customer's calls and figure out what went wrong and make it right. That sort of defined how I view the world,” he said.   From the beginning, Jim understood the value of the customer. Building a business isn't about us. It's about the customer's wants and needs.  From working in customer service, Jim moved to sales where he sold software development tools into enterprise businesses and government organizations. After a while working with the company, he became frustrated with the company's marketing materials and took the initiative to create his own. He went to his boss and asked to take over marketing. This ended up providing him with enough success and resources to buy his first home in Santa Barbara.  Then, in 1993, he tripped over the internet. “I went into teaching mode, and I became a public speaker, an author, and a consultant on how the Internet was going to change the world,” he said. “That was my consultancy—how do we make our website better? Well, better at what? What are you trying to accomplish? Why do you have a website? And that question opens up a whole can of worms: who are we selling to, what are we selling, what is our business model, and what are the politics?” Once he discovered analytics, he was able to prove what worked and didn't work on a website with data. It led him to start a conference on web analytics, which became the Marketing Analytics Summit and the Digital Analytics Association with about 6,000 members and 100 companies.  “The foundation underneath all of that is the view of the customer first,” Jim said. “And all sales and all marketing are about what the customer needs. I don't care who you are or how long you've been in the business, you are not the target audience; your customer is, and that's my religion.”  3 Key Points While customers are central to monetization, there are two other supporting parts. Jim gave three key points for improving marketing and increasing sales and growth. People Process Technology  “There are three legs of the stool: people, process, and technology,” Jim said. “The technology is cool when it works, but without the people and process, it's just an expensive piece of software. I am passionate about aligning people to sales and marketing to work with data to improve what they're trying to accomplish.” Passion Marketing: People Understanding the importance of the customer can often fall into the tectonic shift of passion marketing—connecting with customers through their level-10 passions. Passion-driven marketing is where we focus on what our customers are passionate about and connect with our customers through those passions. It's all about what our customer needs and helping solve their problems so we become a priority. We are not the target audience, our customers are. In Jim's conferences, he focuses on building relationships. He implements passion marketing by really getting to know what his customers want. He shakes their hands, gets to know their names, and connects with them. When hosting conferences, Jim follows two strategies for putting on and effectively monetizing live events. He says to use sponsors and webinars.  Being a sponsor means money. “Whether it's an online event, or an in-person event doesn't matter. Be a sponsor and get your logo in front of the right audience,” he said.  The second strategy is to put on our own webinar. What do we do better than anyone else? We need to show our audience we have what they need and can help them get it.  “What is the biggest benefit you offer? What is your proposition?” he explained. “A webinar says, ‘This is what you need, and we can help you.' And only the people who need what you offer will show up . . . now [you] have increased your prospect list, and you have permission to talk to them and to email them and to follow up. If you do this on a regular basis, maybe every couple of months, you will create a pipeline.” Hosting a successful webinar and becoming a sponsor is one strategy to help increase our success rates. It helps us learn what type of people want the products and services we offer. It helps us get to our customer's level and determine their passions. Value-Based Pricing: Process  Passion marketing works hand-in-hand with value-based pricing. So, what is value-based pricing?  The value-based pricing strategy determines prices based on how much a customer believes our product or service is worth. Instead of factoring in the costs of production, value-based pricing focuses on the output—what the value is.  For example, a tax attorney can save individual thousands of dollars in taxes in a few hours. Instead of charging the client for our time (the price of what the service is worth), we can charge the client for the value we are providing (saving them thousands of dollars).  When I asked Jim what his best monetization strategy and process is, he told me it was value-based pricing.  Jim said it means not talking about features and only talking about the benefits. “It's explaining what you get out the other end, the things that you have that you cannot put a price tag on. And if you are selling business consulting, you're talking about not just increased revenue, but an increase in profit share, increase in employee satisfaction, increase in customer satisfaction, increase in the cultural perception of being able to work in such a company—all of these intangible things that will make a company grow like crazy.”  Instead of setting prices based on time or cost, he sets prices based on the value the customer receives. The value might be expanding a network, increasing employee satisfaction, learning new strategies, building reach and influence, increasing credibility, and more.  “You go to a conference to meet people and grow your professional network,” Jim said. “That's the value. It's the ability to, five years from now, reach out and say, ‘Hey, we met at that conference, and I have a question,' or ‘I'm recruiting for a role' or ‘I'm looking for a role,' and making that reconnection to somebody that you have met before. That's a career-maker.”  One way to help determine our customer's perceived value is by conducting surveys. It is essential to take the time to dive deep into what our consumers want. How often do we get follow-up emails after completing a service? Whether it's the dentist or our auto insurance, they frequently ask us to rate our experience.  This method of value-based pricing typically works better with companies that provide highly valuable and unique products than with companies that sell commoditized products (Source: Investopedia).  Machine Learning: Technology  The final key point to creating a successful business is technology.  Jim is the author of Artificial Intelligence for Marketing: Practical Applications. While people and processes are crucial in building a successful business, he also recognizes the large part technology and data play. Technology and data can help us process the information we get about our consumers.  He told a success story of a business working with AI. The company wanted to find patterns in behavior when people came to look at their website. They had a machine look at social media campaigns, email campaigns, subject lines, a variety of photographs, and more. After analyzing the data, it came up with 10 micro-segments, showing the company what types of people they should send their message to. This caused their sales to go through the roof.  While the starting entrepreneur won't have enough of their own data to fully take advantage of AI and machine learning, there is data out there that can be used. “For most entrepreneurs, an Excel spreadsheet is awesome,” he said. “But if you do have a lot of data, and a very complex question, machine learning is something that we just haven't had before, and it's very powerful.” Key Takeaways Thank you so much Jim for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Jim Cogan is a published author, a yoga instructor and the CEO/Owner of James Cogan Wellness. Jim’s new book, Dude Get a Clue was born out of his realizations and experiences as a white male in America and one of the structural problems in society: white male privilege. He believes men have lost their compass and this loss of direction has created what he calls a “decency deficit.” No preaching here. Dude is definitely not a self-help book, and Jim is not demonizing men, but rather offering insight on how to restore decency back into our national dialog. Decency between genders, races, parties,etc. In his experience, when faced with fear or anxiety, men resort to isolationism, man caves, pandemic notwithstanding. There is value to solitude, but when it becomes a cave where you are removing yourself from the dialog – from loved ones, society – no good can come from that. Men don’t know they need to offer help and ask for help. They tend to mistake empathy and kindness with weakness. At Mindfulness at Work and Cara Pollard Coaching, we have found the men we work with might present as tough and angry but they can be very kind and caring. They just have to be shown how to tap into that side and may need help in designing a plan to do so. Jim wants men to understand that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. He encourages men to be curious about the great world around us. Get out of the man cave! As he says in the book “if Tony Soprano can ask for help any guy can.“ Our discussion touches upon ego – moving from ego to essence. So many people (not just men) reside in their ego. We must work at understanding the concept of our own essence; we don’t just one day wake up in our essence. Jim opens up about his own experience with therapy and how it helped him realize his true self and how he learned self-forgiveness and self-acceptance. “For me, self-forgiveness was Step 1”, Jim explains. He encourages practicing self-forgiveness as opposed to chronically beating yourself up. Laugh at yourself as you would with a dear friend. Be a dear friend to yourself. As a yogi with a master’s in health, Jim also shares his thoughts on the physical and mental health benefits of yoga and meditation. Practicing yoga brings you more in touch with you – not just your body – your essence, your breath. When you practice just being you, you become more accepting of yourself. Studies of brain wave patterns have proven that meditation brings you away from lower brain (rage, lust, fear) and into higher brain functions such as compassion. When you practice yoga, you are more aware of energy, yours and that of others. In Jim’s journey he realized the human condition and how much of our energy is comprised of fear, noting how fearful many are of yoga. “It’s amazing to me: a culture that is so passive, not harmful, not aggressive in any way, can actually feel like an intimidating world to enter.” You can be a dude who doesn’t have a clue and live a life that may not be as joyous or thriving, but you can get a clue. In Jim's world, his client is the most important person and he has built this organization, The Jim Allen Group, on that premise. A degree in Engineering has been especially beneficial in his real estate success story. The first real estate position was with a firm very strong in new construction as well as resale homes. Working with the finest custom home builders in the Triangle, the knowledge he has acquired is unequaled. As you push for ever-greater heights within your career and leadership role, it is helpful to remember where you came from, what makes you unique, and to stay grounded through all the ups-and-downs/success and setbacks you will continue to face to make smart decisions. Introduction The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that there are over 150,000 unfilled construction jobs. The AGC of America found that 73% of firms had a hard time finding qualified workers. Building a strong team has never been more important and hard to come by. Today’s guest is Jim Pappas, VP and district manager of Hensel Phelps. Jim Pappas’ journey into construction Jim grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and loved architecture. He attended Purdue University and was fascinated by all of the tall buildings, feeling that he knew what it took to design them but had no idea how to actually build them. Jim transitioned from civil engineering to architectural engineering with an emphasis in construction management which brought him to Texas where he was hired by Hensel Phelps. Jim has since traveled the country and learned a lot about construction and how we do it across our great nation. Hensel Phelps has a vision of building iconic buildings across the country. Their employees are passionate about building great things and working with great people. Jim’s Most Challenging Construction Experience Jim doesn’t view any experience as his “worst” because he believes that it is necessary for someone dedicated to their career to go through adversity in order to grow and become better at what we do. Jim’s most challenging project was a beach-front resort in Florida. The project was 4-6 months from opening and one Saturday Jim got a call saying there was a flood on level 8 of a combination condo-hotel tower that had flooded down all 8 levels into the garage level and water was running onto the street. There much frustration and sorrow amongst the team and completing the project on time was going to be a difficult task. Jim and his team were working 7 days a week, double shifts. Fortunately, the project opened on time and everyone learned a lot in the process, but having that setback happen 4-6 months from opening was heartbreaking. Leading a Team through Adversity As a leader, it is important to take a step back before making decisions and take information in. You can wonder what you did wrong or what you could have done differently, but that doesn’t solve the problem. You must accept that you are where you are, and gather your team together to begin addressing the issue. In Jim’s case, they contacted the owner with the building’s risk insurance. He then assembled a team to do an assessment and figure out where they needed to go from there. Some people pointed fingers, trying to blame those whose fault it was, but they had to put that aside and come together to focus on the mission of opening on time. Customers had already booked rooms and conventions, and so the team gathered together and developed a path forward. It is important to empower your people and show them what they can do to make a difference. How does Hensel Phelps keep their people? It starts with doing the right thing. Hensel Phelps is founded upon employee ownership; we share the gains of the company at a level that other companies do not. We incentivize people in two different ways: financially and with the idea of employee ownership and the culture it creates. People realize that their success is often based upon the people they are training; not only what they do themselves, but who else they can train to replicate their job. It creates a culture of ownership and personal involvement. We have a great thing going and want to keep it going. Creating a Culture of Ownership Any great culture is created through a shared sense of responsibility. Hensel Phelps employees take ownership of their jobs, even it means staying after hours because their focus is on the project’s requirements and not themselves. We motivate people to be a part of the bigger picture; that their job is more than just a paycheck and that their project is more than just a building. For example, building a hospital is important for making people healthy, so opening on time makes it so that more people in the community can be healed and kept healthy. The impact of our employees’ work spans far greater than just a paycheck. Effective Recruiting and Onboarding Hensel Phelps’ recruiting process starts with an initial campus event (if recruiting a college) and interview. We then bring them to a job site and show them presentations about what Hensel Phelps is about. It’s a courting process where we don’t just choose our hires, they choose us as well. We typically have five senior-level staff interview the people we hire, ask different questions, and see if prospective employees are a good cultural fit. We then onboard them and go through different levels of training and teaching throughout their careers. We have a leadership development initiative program, an emerging leaders seminar, and a women’s leadership seminar. Our leader management system offers three types of training: one-on-one, self-directed, and classroom training. We’ve developed these systems to teach technical expertise along with our culture and company history. We transfer folks, even on a temporary basis, in order to share and display our culture throughout the country. We are a large company, but because of how tight-knit our employees are within the culture, it feels like a small company. Right now we have about 2400 salaried employees and 1200 craft people. We have 8 different districts, a service group, and a development group. Leadership Development Hensel Phelps develops leaders through their Leadership Development Initiative. This program is for people who have spent 5+ years with the company. We support specific trainings that are soft-skills based: accountability, managing change, communicating effectively, coaching and developing people, and having difficult conversations. We started a doing a survey of all of our employees every two years and use that data to analyze and see where people are at within their careers and what some of the lessons are. There is a lot of technical training within our industry, but there is very little training about relationships and people. We learned that in order to succeed, you have to know your people and develop them into effective leaders. We spend a lot of time working to increase the interpersonal skills of our staff necessary for project success but not necessarily related directly to engineering. What can you do to create a team and culture like Hensel Phelps? Do you know your people? Do you know what motivates them? Do you listen to what they say? People don’t quit their companies, they quit their manager. You should know where each of your staff is at personally and where they are at within the confines of the project because those two aspects intersect. If you don’t know what’s going on personally, it will affect the job site. Getting the best out of people is often doing what’s best for them overall. We review our employees twice per year and go over their needs and progress in detail. We want to challenge managers to turn B-level employees into A’s and challenge A’s to take the next step and opportunity. What is the Best Advice Jim Pappas has Ever Received? Jim says that the best advice he has ever received was to be himself, to continue to stay involved and be challenged. Always reach for more, but don’t let it change you. Take what you’ve learned from other people and channel it into how it works for you. Don’t try and be someone that you aren’t; be the best you that you can be. It is also important to stay present. Construction is a very busy industry and it is easy to get distracted, but wherever you are, you need to be there and be present to make a difference. Sat there and did nothing!   You're hired! Andy gets a job – the kind of job that requires a lot of responsibility. He'll be riding shotgun for Jim Buck, the stagecoach driver. He sits on top of the stagecoach beside the driver and carries a shotgun. If the stage gets held up by outlaws, the shotgun man is there to protect the stagecoach, the luggage, and the passengers. Matt's name is on the line Andy got this job on Matt's recommendation, so Matt's own reputation -- his good name -- is on the line. If Andy does a poor job, it will reflect on Matt. So, of course, Matt has a personal interest in Andy's success. You can imagine how relieved Matt is when he sees Andy get back to Dodge City with his boss. In Jim's Bad Books But Matt soon finds out that things did not go well between them. Jim is very angry and Andy is in his bad books. Andy knows he didn't live up to his new boss's expectations and he admits it to Matt, but Jim thinks Andy is downplaying it in the telling. He is making it seem less serious than it really is. According to Jim, Andy deserves to be punished. In fact, he deserves to be 'tarred and feathered'. That kind of punishment is meant to hurt not only the body but also the pride. For decades, Jim covered sports for the London Free Press, the daily paper in the city where we live. He was responsible for all kinds of topics, including the old London Tigers baseball team we had here for a time (an Eastern League AA affiliate of the Detroit Tigers), the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, all kinds of major league sporting events, and even auto racing coverage out at the stock car track near here called Delaware Speedway, where I worked in various capacities for about a decade and where I got to know Jim best. Listening to Jim talk about how they used to get stories written and submitted is a whole lot of fun. If you have any interest at all in news media, journalism or reporting, you’ll love it. Umpiring, on the other hand, took Jim to the Olympics and other international events, as well as through baseball’s minor leagues. Had work visas been more readily available, Jim may never have been a sportswriter to begin with, as it’s likely he would have ended up as an umpire in the major leagues. We discuss that, too. Some of the key steps in the journey that I took away from my time with Jim included: 1. Perspective. Whether it’s with writing or umpiring or anything else, we’re all looking at life through a different lense. That fact alone can explain a lot of “taken out of context” complaints. 2. What you love most seems to stay with you. In Jim’s case, it’s umpiring, and an appreciation for sharing new experiences with other people. 3. The art of actually being there & the value of human connection. These two things put together answered some questions I’d had about Jim for years, like how come he’s not written a book or started a blog? On today’s episode of Trend Following Radio Michael Covel interviews Jim Rickards. Jim was front and center during the 1998 LTCM blow-up. He was a partner and general counsel for Long Term Capital Management. Following their blowup, he was principal negotiator in the 1998 bailout of LTCM by the Federal Reserve. He has had a bird’s eye view of some of the most interesting events in the economy over the last 20 years. In Jim’s latest book, “The Road to Ruin: The Global Elites’ Secret Plan for the Next Financial Crisis,” he talks about 1998, 2008 and 2018. Jim gives these dates as examples of financial crises that happen (and will happen) every six to ten years. He relates financial panics to earthquakes. If you could stop an earthquake mid earthquake, this is similar to how we have been dealing with financial crises over the years. When bubbles are created, and then bailouts occur, government is only putting a stopper in the problem, however the problem is still there and building. The next bailout can’t come from the central banks. Jim and Michael finish the podcast discussing cyber hacking and WWIII. Jim believes WWIII has already begun between Russia and America on a cyber warfare front. Cyber warfare has been happening between Russia and the U.S. for years. It is the worse kind of attack because you can get into major operating systems. Jim uses the operating systems of the Hoover Dam or getting into the operating system of the New York Stock Exchange as examples. If a terrorist got into the operating system of the Hoover Dam and opened up the flood gates it would wipe out hundreds of thousands of people.

If you were sitting across the table from another business owner and they said to you that they feel they have great products and services but lack the consistently motivated human capital, what advice would you give that person to have a successful business? What is one thing that is going on in your life right now that you are really excited about – something that you are either working on to develop yourself or your people? Where can our listeners find you online? What is one quote or saying that you live by or that inspires you in times of adversity? Highlights Stephanie started by stating that she worked a little over a decade consulting for Fortune Fifty/ Fortune One Hundred clients and leading a team of 250 to 300 people. She stated that there was a lot of activity and stress involved with that world of work. When she started working there, she thought she was going to retire from where she started as she was a true blue employee that really believed in the work that she was doing and was going to continue that until her retirement. Into her experience with that career, the company went from a privately held LLC to a publicly traded company, and when they made that shift in corporate organization, there was a drastic shift in the corporate culture, there was a drastic shift in the treatment of their clients, there was a drastic shift in the treatment of their employees and that no longer matched who she was. The company moved from being people-focused to being bottom-line focused. A lot of the things they did in support of their clients as well as a lot of things that they had done culturally in support of their own associates were disappearing. She was being asked a lot of times to do different things on many occasions that was right on her ethical borders so much so that there were days late into that experience where she was getting physically ill at work because the people that Stephanie reported to were just asking her to do things that were not right for a myriad of reasons, they weren’t illegal but they were just not right. Fortunately, her husband who is very supportive had a conversation and they decided that it was time for her to walk away, it took her about 2 years to be brave enough to talk to her husband but she was nervous because that meant she was walking away from a high 6 figure income and they decided that it was the absolute right choice and she did that and decided to start Calahan Solutions rather than getting another job. When she went to decide what she was going to do within Calahan Solutions, she looked at the work that she did that she wanted to bring with her, the parts of that corporate experience she wanted to bring with her that were positive, the things that she enjoyed doing, the things that she was good at doing. She looked at her peer reviews and reviews from the leadership team that she reported to and looked at the things she did really well and just combined all of that into a business. Her business has morphed and changed quite a bit over the years because one of the things that she didn’t let go of was over working, she was a workaholic and almost worked herself to death. In 2009 she was told she would not see 2010 because she was so ill and so in the course of getting well, she had to rethink her business and that rethinking of her business and how she wanted to deliver services allowed her to become fully her and not hold back because there was this workaholic part of her and there was a part of her that thinks that people are not interested in that aspect of her and so she blocked a lot of who she was too. While that health experience was a scary one, she was actually really grateful because it brought her to where she is today. It has also allowed her to recognize that life is really short and if it’s going to be short, if we aren’t guaranteed tomorrow, then she needs to be the best she can be everyday and so it has given her motivation to really go for those things in her business that are important rather than letting fear hold her back. Stephanie shared that Customer Service/Client Service is one of the most integral parts of what she does. The work that she does, all the way from the conversations that she is having now, the blog post that she writes, the interactions that she has with her clients, the interactions that she has with her prospects are all about service. The work that she does is transformational and if people don’t feel well cared for, they can’t take part in that transformation in a really significant way and then the work that they do is the same thing. The more you can think about the experiences that you are providing whether it is through the conversations that you are having, whether it is through the on-boarding processes that you have when you have new clients but even if you have products that you sell in a store, products that you sell online, think all the way through that experience to make sure that it’s something that’s going to be really positive and enjoyable for the people that are doing business with you. Stephanie shared that one solution she thinks can apply to a lot of people listening is to think through the experience your customers are having when they are interacting with you online and that can be a lot of different things. Stephanie shared an experience that she had (a bad customer experience), that she also wrote a blog post about it. She stated that there was someone she was following online that she really respected and she decided to purchase a product online from this person, she made the purchase on a Friday night and all of a sudden she got 7 different receipts for that same purchase and the purchase was not a low price purchase. Her credit card got impacted by over US $4,000.00 from that one purchase because it wasn’t a US $4,000.00 purchase; it was 7 different purchases of the exact same product. She then franticly started making phone calls to the company trying to get a hold of anybody because that wasn’t her intent to spend that amount of money and she didn’t want to buy 7 versions of the digital product. After 4 hours of calling different numbers, she eventually got someone who had absolutely nothing to do with her purchase, she told the person that she needed their help to escalate the problem, she needed the money to be put back on her card immediately. With all said and done, everything got resolved but it was 4 hours of her time in panic, stress and also unnecessary because if when they had put the product up on their shopping cart they had ensured someone to test it and actually pretend to make a purchase, they would have seen what happens from the customers’ perspective. Stephanie Calahan further stated just because you have stuff set up correctly in the first place for product A doesn’t mean that product B is going to be set up correctly. Test every single one of them, look at the landing pages you’re going to have, look at the thank you pages you’re going to have, look at the emails going out, look at the impact it has on a credit card and what the credit card receipts have because the more smooth you can make that process, the happier a customer you are going to have. Stephanie advised in her own business - she has a few family members that are not that technically inclined that she would ask to run through the process for her and she will refund it right away. Just for them to go through it and let her know if there is anything confusing or if the process was clunky in any way and give her that feedback. She stated that there are a lot of big corporations; the amazons of the world who have teams of people that they call usability testing but smaller businesses don’t have teams of people to do usability testing but you can do something really simple like that which doesn’t take a lot of time that can really save your reputation and relationships by investing in time to do that. In reference to the question of recommendations that Stephanie has for a company that has a physical storefront with items for sale (brick and mortar). The solution she suggests is to be present. In our world of ever changing attention spans where we could have an iPad going, the cash register going, our phone ringing and someone at the counter, just pay attention. Whoever you are interacting with whether it’s on the phone or at the counter, give them your full attention for the time frame that you’re having an interaction with them and let them know they are important to you because they are, they are your customers. Give them the respect that they deserve as they are doing an exchange with you, whether it’s asking a question or making a purchase. Some people look at customer service only from the perspective as people that are giving you money and that they become the customer when they have made a purchase from you. However, the truth is they are your customer the minute they’re in your sphere of influence because the conversations and relationships that you build with people even before they have made a purchase influence how they feel about you. After asking Stephanie Calahan how she stays motivated everyday - she believes in having a big Why? Simon Sinek has a TED talk video on YouTube Start With Why. It’s about getting that piece that’s deep inside of you that you tap into that allows you to do all the things that you absolutely adore about your business and to also do the things that you are less excited about. She stated that her “Why” ties back to her personal experiences. She mentioned that in 2009 she was really ill almost lost her life and the reason she is here today is because a really good friend introduced her to a holistic health coach that helped her figure out the complex mess that she was in and helped her so that she could be here today. She realized that after she got well and learned more about his business, that there is no way she would have found him if she hadn’t been personally introduced to him by a friend and there are so many different world changers that are out there and he would not consider himself a world changer but he changed her world because she’s here today because of the work she did with him. She stated that there are so many world changers like him that are so amazing like him but people don’t know they exist. So her “Why” is to help change the world in a very positive way by helping those world changers get found and be aligned with clients and do what they do best. Stephanie stated one of the most important things that entrepreneurs and businesses should take in account is to build a business that is in alignment with who you really are. There are a lot of people that build businesses based off of what one guru or another says and it’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole and it doesn’t work and then they’re always pushing rather than letting the beauty of life and the beauty of their ideal clients find them and just flow. She shared that the first thing she would suggest a business owner do is look at what they have going on in their life right now and identify those spots that are really feeling off and get honest about it and adjust. The more you can build a business aligned around who you are then the more comfortable you are and not comfortable in a bad way as she is a believer in stepping out of your comfort zone, “comfortable” meaning it matches who you are from an energy level, from a spiritual level, from a business strategy level and from a learning and personality values level. The more your business is in alignment with who you are and the less you’re pushing, the more energy you have to be focused on somebody else namely your customers or your clients. When you have a business model that is always making you stressed, you don’t have the mental capacity to be thinking of other people in the same way as you do when you are truly joyous about the work you do. Stephanie also stated that one of her programs is called “Money, Mindset and Magnetism”, the clients that align and sign up to be a part of that program are typically having challenges with their sales in one way or another and what she finds is the case with every single private client that comes into that program is that initially they are more focused on themselves, they are not selfish people but they are more focused on themselves than on the people that they are meant to serve, so their sales conversations just implode. They don’t work as well as they could and there’s so many things when we are solid within who we are and our mindset is clean and confident then we are in a different mental space to be able to truly think about the person on the other side of the counter, on the other side of the phone, over Skype, over Google Hangout, whichever way you connect with your ideal customer or client that it allows you to think from their perspective and get much more creative with how you can make their experience a positive one. When customers | clients | patients have a more positive experience, they’re more likely to continue to want to work with you. When asked what is the one app, website, resource or tool that she absolutely cannot live without in her business - Stephanie shared that she adores Infusionsoft (https://www.infusionsoft.com) which is an all in one marketing tool that allows you to make your customer experience very personalized and build relationships with the people you are interacting with rather than it being transaction based. There are different components and there is one component called “Customer Relationship Management Section” and that’s where you can gather all kinds of information about your clients and customers and give yourself good information in order to interact with them. If you do online sales or brick and mortar sales then this tool will allow you to identify who signed up for what giveaway you have, who purchases a product and it allows you to have a more intelligent conversation with them. If you are in a business where it is more one on one interaction, it allows you to note the important things you learned about those people that you are working with. She calls it her memory in a box, she can go back to that person’s record anytime and know what they talked about, what they are interested in and it helps her refresh her memory so that she can treat the people that she is working with, with great respect and honor. She further stated it is more than a CRM as there is also an Auto Responder portion where you can do newsletters, you can do automated communication based off of the types of interactions the customers and clients are having with you or your site. There’s a Shopping Cart portion, there’s a number of different elements that can be used to allow you to know what your customer is interested in and then be able to serve them with that. Stephanie mentioned that the tool – Infusionsoft (https://www.infusionsoft.com) was built specifically for small businesses and they have customers that are in service coaching industries but they have people that run all kinds of different brick and mortar stores whether it’s retail stores and they have customers all over the globe doing all different types of businesses but it specifically for the small business. Stephanie mentioned that she has been doing business with them (Infusionsoft) for a number of years and like a lot of businesses, they have some growing pains, at one point they were getting customers so fast that their customer service wasn’t so good for a while but they addressed that. They recognized where their growing pains were starting to cause them problems and they made adjustments. So Stephanie suggests as another tip - as your business grows, the way that you interact with your customers will need to change and so be open for that and look at those spots where maybe things are falling through the cracks that didn’t use to fall through the cracks and those are customer improvement opportunities too. Stephanie shared that when she thinks about Customer Service, one book that is really fantastic is “Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap…And Others Don’t” by Jim Collins. You can be a good company and make a lot of money or you can be a great company that makes a lot of money and makes an impact too. In Jim’s book, he did a study of a number of different organizations just understanding why were some companies merely really good and others great and what did the great ones have in common? And one of those things that all the great ones have in common was really good customer service. Stephanie mentioned that when she framed her business, she had to decide if she wanted to be mass numbers or did she want to be high touch and by high touch, she means how well did she know the people she was working with and how involved did she get with them in relation to the work they are doing together. Stephanie Calahan decided that high touch was really where she wanted to sit in that coaching space and so she has a unique rule that she wants to be able to love her customers unconditionally in order to work with them because when you can accept your customers and clients unconditionally in the coaching space, then you have the ability to really help empower them to make fantastic changes in the direction they want to go in their business so customer service is one of the ways that she is able to do that. She also stated that another great book is “Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions” by Guy Kawasaki which is about relationships and talking about how you engage with your community, with your tribe, and with your audience. She also mentioned “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion” by Robert Cialdini which is a different form of engagement but understanding how the words that you use impact the people you are working with so to make sure that you’re conscious about that and how you interact with people. Yanique asked Stephanie…..we have a lot of listeners who are business owners and managers who feel they have great products and services but they lack the constantly motivated Human Capital.  If you were sitting across the table from that person, what’s the one piece of advice that you would give them to have a successful business? Stephanie Calahan shared that one advice that she would give is if you are lacking the human capital, systemize. There are so many different technologies out there that allow you to be fantastic at what you do. She then gave an example, when she first started her business; she was going back and forth in email with people anytime she wanted to schedule anything and she could have a lot of people going back and forth with at any given point trying to schedule a conversation on the phone or face to face and sometimes she dropped the ball because she would miss an email or her phone wouldn’t sync to her computer. That is a relationship gap when you don’t reply when you should and so one way that she automated that piece of it was to set up an online availability calendar that syncs with her calendar that is outlining when she’s available for different types of conversations. Let’s say she meets someone on a Facebook group and goes back and forth on messenger. Now, if she wants to schedule a conversation, she can say go to this URL and pick any time that works for you, you can trust that any time that’s on that calendar that shows available that she is also available and it eliminates that back and forth, it eliminates that unproductive time and allows her to have more time for the important things of the conversation and there is a lot of different things you can do within your business to automate different administrative functions and different operational functions so that you are freeing up more time to do the things that you really love to do. When you talk about those businesses that don’t have a lot of human capital, there are some things where people interaction is critical and there are some things like scheduling a meeting that is really administrative and the technology is there that makes it so easy and so streamlined that it is a happier customer experience than the aggravation of all the back and forth. So it ultimately ends up being a better customer experience by automating that piece and frees you up to have more time to be able to do those pieces that are more important face to face or voice to voice. One thing that is going on in Stephanie’s life right now that she is working on to develop herself and her people – she stated that the thing she has been working on for the last couple of months that she is the most excited about is something that came from a love of wanting to combine the concerns of people who are Podcast hosts, Radio Show hosts and the concerns of people that are guest on these shows. She is writing a book right now that is called “Guest Appearance Gold: Sky Rocket Your Reach, Grow Your Influence and Attract Great Clients by Leveraging Your Guest Appearances and Expert Interviews” and she was hearing from hosts that they have all of these guests on their shows and they don’t do anything to help promote the show, they just come on and do their thing and then they get off and that’s a frustration from the hosts perspective. She was also hearing from the guest expert side of going on these shows that it isn’t really doing a whole lot for their business and that’s largely because there’s this whole piece in the middle that’s missing that wasn’t being leveraged by the guest experts and so she has written that book and it started out as a simple check list and after 60 pages, she said it’s not really a simple check list anymore because she was giving a lot of why’s behind different things that people could do and so her intention when the book is done is to give it away because she would like more people to be able to really get the biggest return on investment and in this case it is a time investment that will benefit hosts of shows as well as benefit the people that are experts on those shows. Stephanie stated that what is interesting about when you go on shows; it’s a two way customer service experience because the host is the customer of the guest but the guest is also the customer of the host, when you’re really working together then you can get amazing exposure for the conversation you had together which benefits everybody. Jim Rogers is an American investor & the author of "Street Smarts: Adventures On The Road And In The Markets." Jim was such a savvy investor he was able to retire at the age of 37. Jim believes that because of commodity shortages around the world we will see a rise in social unrest, globally. In Jim's latest book he talks about how Asia will become the economic leader in there 21st century, much like the United States was in the 20th century. Jim is such a strong believer in this, that he has moved his family to Singapore. All of Jim's children speak Mandarin fluently, as this will be the leading language of the future.
