This episode of Veteran Made dives deep into the transformative power of purpose and the dangers of misdirected effort, featuring Roel Gonzalez, an Army veteran and crew chief for Team RWB's Old Glory Ultra Relay. Gonzalez shares his journey from military service to ultra running, revealing how even good things—like physical endurance or community service—can become harmful when pursued for the wrong reasons. He recounts his early experiences running marathons during deployment and how they shifted from a means of distraction to a source of purpose. The episode challenges listeners to reflect on their own actions and motivations, emphasizing that how we do things matters more than what we do. This is not just about physical feats but about aligning mindset and heartset to create meaningful impact. The conversation explores the unique dynamics of the Old Glory Ultra Relay, where runners carry the American flag across the country in a mission that transcends athleticism. Gonzalez highlights the importance of teamwork, adaptability, and shared purpose over individual achievement. He describes how his role as a crew chief involves balancing the physical and emotional needs of the runners while preparing for unforeseen challenges. The episode underscores that enduring hardship for a greater cause—what Gonzalez calls “elective suffering”—is a powerful way to grow and contribute meaningfully. It also critiques superficial approaches to failure, urging listeners to embrace setbacks as opportunities for deeper learning and growth. Listeners are left with a powerful takeaway: good intentions alone are not enough; actions must be rooted in genuine purpose and community connection. Gonzalez's raw honesty about his struggles with transitioning out of the military and rediscovering his sense of belonging through Team RWB is both inspiring and convicting. This episode pushes you to reevaluate your own motivations, challenging you to turn good deeds into great ones by aligning them with the right purpose. Whether you're a runner, a veteran, or someone seeking clarity in your life's mission, this episode will leave you motivated to rethink how you approach challenges and opportunities alike. The 2025 Season is almost here, and it's the perfect time in the off season to start looking at some NASCAR future markets. We start things off trying to get the new lay of the land. The first order of business is to go through all the new faces in new places. Then we move into a new segment this year called "Full Tank Ranks" where in this ep, we're ranking the Top 5 best Crew Chief changes for gamblers. Then it's time to talk turkey. We dig into the championship futures market and discuss different reasons and ways to play it. Then, there's some fun little markets within the season long futures that Caesars is offering this year. Some of this stand out. Finally, we wrap up with some win total over/unders. In some cases we throw out some TEAM totals that make a little more sense.

Air Cavalry was a new tactic employed during the Vietnam War. Jack List participated in those early days of air assault, including seeing action in the Ia Drang Valley, made famous in the movie “We Were Soldiers”. Jack served 30 years, 11 months and 25 days in the Army, retiring at the rank of Command Sergeant Major. Jack was born in Germany and his father served in the German Army during World War II. During his first tour in Vietnam he was notified by his grandmother that he had been drafted into the German Army! Jack was assigned to the 11th Air Assault “Test” Division that was evaluating the Air Assault concept. Jack would eventually serve as a Crew Chief with the newly minted 1st Air Cavalry. He became responsible for a UH-1 “Huey”. Jack flew as a door gunner on missions and then had to patch up the aircraft upon return to base. The 1st Air Cavalry was based at Camp Radcliff, An Khe'. At the time it was the largest helicopter base in the world with more than 400 helicopters. On his first mission they launched 110 helicopters to support a Special Forces camp. “The thing that scared me the most was not the enemy shooting at us, it was potential for midair collisions.” The scenes at LZ X-Ray depicted in “We Were Soldiers” were just a small part of the larger Pleiku campaign. At LZ-Albany, further north in the Ia Drang valley, our troops suffered a 50% casualty rate. Jack described one of his missions where 5 of the 10 persons on board were wounded upon approach to the landing zone. He says he has no idea how he completed two tours without being wounded himself. His pilot trained other crew members so they would know the basics in case they had to fly the helicopter. Jack says that Sergeant Major Basil Plumley was an excellent leader and always had his troops well squared away. Col. Hal Moore went back into both LZ X-Ray and LZ Albany to retrieve remains.

Beth King joined the military to provide for her son and became the first female in her company to fully progress to the role of crew chief. One fateful night in Afghanistan, her Chinook was hit by an RPG, throwing her from the helicopter. Her harness caught her, saving her life, but the incident left her with serious injuries that were not immediately apparent to others. She went 18 months without treatment, only to later discover that she had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). As her symptoms worsened, she was eventually medically discharged from the military. Her injury, compounded by PTSD, anxiety, and depression, led King to isolate herself. Eventually, the Wounded Warrior Project helped renew her sense of community, reigniting her love of sports and, ultimately, her zest for life. Now, it is King's turn to give back, helping other veterans find a sense of purpose as they return to civilian life.
