Believe it or not, MGM wasn't sure how to sell Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey." One of the ideas suggested by PR executive Mike Kaplan was 'how about a pop single?' Encouraged by Kubrick, Kaplan took up his pen and wrote and produced a song. Kubrick ended up shelving the idea, and the record wasn't heard... until now."2001: A Garden of Personal Mirrors" is available wherever you get your digital music, or you can get a limited edition vinyl copy here.
The Storm Skiing Podcast is sponsored by Mountain Gazette - Listen to the podcast for discount codes on subscriptions and merch.WhoMike Kaplan, CEO of Aspen Skiing CompanyRecorded onSept. 24, 2021Why I interviewed himVail may rule the American skiing economy, but Aspen remains king of the nation’s popular skiing imagination. From Aspen Extreme to Dumb and Dumber, the town and its mountains serve as the stand-in for big-mountain Western skiing as a whole, one word that communicates to skiers and non-skiers the essence of the sport. And there is something spectacular about it. This city at the end of the road, hovering just past the gravitational pull of Denver and the I-70 disaster seeping beyond it. Those narrow expert mountains with their unrelenting fall lines and absence of greens. Buttermilk with its lazy empty groomers and lost-in-plain-site underdog patina. The wild labyrinthian variety of burly Snowmass. The city itself, bleeding as one into Aspen Mountain, some invigorating mashup of town and city, luxe and lowbrow, skibum and jetset. Aspen doesn’t have the wildest terrain. It doesn’t get the most snow. It doesn’t have the most vertical or the most skiable acres. But it may just be the best total ski experience America offers. What we talked aboutArriving in Aspen in 1993; how the city has changed over the past three decades; going from ski school instructor to CEO of one of America’s great ski companies; celebrating 75 years of skiing at Aspen; the significance of Aspen’s original Lift 1, the present-day Shadow Mountain lift, and what may replace it and when; the return of Ruthie’s restaurant; the scope and status of the proposed Pandora expansion off Aspen Mountain’s summit; what could be developed on that land if the county denies the expansion permit; what the expansion could mean for the Gent’s Ridge quad and the rest of Aspen’s lift fleet; Snowmass lifts: the new high-speed six-pack on Big Burn, a timeline to replace Coney Glade, the latest thinking on a possible Burnt Mountain lift; whether we could ever see a lift up Highland Bowl at Aspen Highlands; whether the Bowl Cat will return for the 2021-22 ski season; where we could see future expansion at Highlands; how the Deep Temerity expansion at Highlands could inform the Pandora expansion at Aspen; the status of the Golden Horn surface lift at Highlands; a different point of view on Buttermilk; the interplay of the four mountains to create a distinctive Aspen experience; why Aspen didn’t become part of Alterra; the Mountain Collective Pass and Ikon Pass origin stories; why Aspen pulled off the Ikon Base Pass and how the move to the “plus” tier has worked out; the future of the Mountain Collective; what happened with the $2 million that Liftopia owed Aspen for Mountain Collective Passes; Aspen’s plan to “stay in business forever” amid a changing climate; why Aspen is requiring all employees to get vaccinated against Covid-19 prior to the start of the 2021-22 ski season; and the tangle of problems Covid brought along with it last season. Why I thought that now was a good time for this interviewAspen, under Kaplan, has evolved. It is: a leader in the fight against climate change, a model for implementing creative employee housing solutions in the modern mountain town, a crown-jewel of two transcontinental ski pass products, a voice in skiing’s struggles to diversify, and an uncompromising partner in the battle against Covid. There was nothing inevitable about any of this. Fifteen years ago, Aspen was a fun town with a pack of fun ski hills. The Epic Pass didn’t exist and issues of diversity, equality, and environmental catastrophe were minimized or ignored. Aspen could have just kept being Aspen and that would have probably been good enough to keep on existing. But Kaplan had other ideas. Lots of ideas. And while a phalanx of market and social forces, innovators, and disruptors would likely have forced the company into some version of its 2021 self, Kaplan no doubt accelerated the change. Aspen Mountain, by skiable acres, is only the 20th largest ski area in Colorado – smaller than Monarch, Sunlight, Eldora, Wolf Creek, Powderhorn, A-Basin, Purgatory, and Loveland. Yet in its purpose and its presence it is bigger than all of them. Now seemed as good a time as ever to find out why that continues to be true.Questions I wish I’d askedI had wanted to discuss the origin and influence of the X-Games at Buttermilk, whether the locals backlash against the Ikon Pass has subsided as Aspen changed access levels and started giving out a Base Pass with an Aspen season pass, whether Aspen would continue rationing season passes, how the company’s various diversity initiatives are evolving, whether post-Covid employee benefit cuts had been restored, how short-term rentals and urban Covid refugees were impacting the local housing market, Aspen’s employee housing initiatives, how the Covid fallout compared to the aftermath of The Great Recession, whether the company expected last year’s skier visit declines to continue, and which Covid-era operating changes were most likely to hang around. We ran out of time. Next time. Why you should ski AspenBecause Aspen will give you the best total ski week in America. The skiing, yes: the mountains, teetering above the valley, four poles balancing one another like a perfectly assembled sports team. The steeps that are not too steep to manage and the greens that are not too flat to lean into. The lost-in-time-and-space feeling of the Hanging Valley Glades or Deep Temerity or Bingo Glades. But it’s everything else, too. The free and frequent shuttlebus connecting town and mountains. The incredible variety of lodging options that make the place more affordable than you’d think. And the city itself, a pedestrian-friendly human-scaled relic salvaged from Colorado’s Wild West ancestry and outfitted with T-shirt shops, celebrity-chef eateries, weed emporiums, surly bars, grocery stores, Prada shops, and antique stores, like the most bizarre Lego set ever invented. And you go because you have to. It’s just one of those places. If you’re a skier you must ski Aspen because it’s Aspen. I really don’t know how else to say it. Just go.More AspenLift Blog’s lift inventories for:Aspen MountainAspen HighlandsButtermilkSnowmassHistoric trailmaps for:Aspen MountainAspen HighlandsButtermilkSnowmassArchival footage of Lift 1, the single chair that stood from 1947 to 1971 and took 40 minutes to rise from town to the Aspen Mountain summit:Get stoked on Aspen Extreme: Get on the email list at www.stormskiing.com

EPISODE 45 : 2001 A Space Odyssey with Mike Kaplan Mike Kaplan is a film producer, documentary director, actor, award-winning poster designer, marketing strategist, and songwriter. He has been a close associate to many visionary filmmakers including Robert Altman, Hal Ashby, Lindsay Anderson, Mike Hodges, Alan Rudolph, and Paul Thomas Anderson. He directed the documentaries: Luck, Trust & Ketchup: Robert Altman in Carver Country, which showed Altman's filmmaking technique for the first time, and Never Apologize, Malcolm McDowell's tour de force performance documentary about Lindsay Anderson, an official Cannes Film Festival selection. As an independent distributor in the UK, he released Barbet Schroeder's The Valley (Obscured by Clouds), which had over 400 playdates in England, a record at that time for a subtitled film, and Jack Hazan's A Bigger Splash, featuring David Hockney, which played for a year in London setting house records and establishing a day and date release pattern for an art film. Wearing his strategist hat, he rescued Mike Hodges' Croupier from video oblivion as it became the most successful and acclaimed independent film in the United States. Mike is perhaps best known for conceiving 'The Ultimate Trip'/Star Child campaign for 2001: A Space Odyssey and his subsequent work on A Clockwork Orange working directly for Stanley Kubrick. Mike tells us about how he got started in A.P.E., the Advertising, Publicity and Exploitation department at MGM in the mid-sixties; His first epiphany experience seeing 2001 just before its initial release; His first encounter with Stanley Kubrick in the projection booth on opening night in New York; Rumours that The Beatles wanted to write a song for 2001; Kubrick asking Mike himself to write the promo song, which he did [and you’ll hear that later as only the second time ever to be officially broadcast, the only other time being at midnight of the new millenium]….. and other tales of Hollywood during it’s second Golden Age. In 1968, Mike Kaplan, a long time Canyon County resident, was working in New York City as part of the team for the groundbreaking film , 2001: A Space Odyssey . The science fiction film was visionary and it vaulted its producer and director Stanley Kubrick into the pantheon of great film directors. 2001 was about a manned space journey to Jupiter, extraterrestrial life and the artificial intelligence of computer named HAL. The film, at first, received a mixed reaction, then, Academy Award nominations, fame, and 52 years later, it’s a film classic. Kaplan was the marketing director for the film, but he joined Idaho Matters live to talk about the sound of 2001: A Space Odyssey , which was notable for having very little dialogue and no traditional musical score. He described his personal journey that began with Kubrick's sudden challenge to him in 1968: compose a song for this film.

Instead, here are some of his most recent projects you can check out: THE FAUCET (Myq’s solo podcast) "Comedian Myq Kaplan is The Faucet. Except instead of water like from a literal faucet, what comes out are words, thoughts, ideas, jokes, rhymes, philosophies, fun, and more, in a stream of consciousness. A stream. Like water. See? Like this." BROCCOLI AND ICE CREAM (Myq’s podcast with guest) "Comedian and human Myq Kaplan (pronounced Mike Kaplan) has conversations with friends about the work of their lives (as represented by broccoli) and the joys of their lives (as represented by ice cream). Everyone has the best time and learns a lot forever. Enjoy!" AKA (Myq’s latest and finest stand-up album) "The 17-track comedy album is about truth, love, and not murdering, guaranteed to appeal to all the not-murdering enthusiasts out there. A.K.A. was named by Myq Kaplan, AKA Mike Kaplan (named by himself and by someone else [namely his parents, another part of the universe that he is also a part of] respectively)." As Variety puts it, "The iconic Los Angeles station is on life support — and it has nothing to do with coronavirus." Then go on to write: "KROQ was changing and leading the charge was new brand manager Mike Kaplan — who not-so-coincidentally had been nicknamed “Mike the Show Killer” by jocks at his former station, the aforementioned Alt 98.7. According to sources, Kaplan ordered “Circles” be added to the playlist immediately and mandated that all talent no longer refer to the station as “K-Rock” but rather use its call letters — K-R-O-Q — almost exclusively. The very sound of the word “rock” purportedly offended Kaplan, who not only felt it antiquated, but borderline toxic. “Rock equals death,” says a station insider of management’s view." They strongly oppose the effort to rename Bowling Green State University's Gish Film Theater honoring two talented native Ohioans, Lillian and Dorothy Gish. Recently a similar petition was taken to the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood. The Gish sisters made distinguished, unmatched contributions to the performing arts, including motion pictures, stage, radio, and television. The removal of the name of the Gish Film Theater would be a sad, ignorant, misinformed waste and an insult to these great women's legacy. There are campus activists at BGSU who want the Gish Theater name removed because of Lillian Gish's role in the controversial D.W.Griffith film, "The Birth of a Nation." Miss Gish was not a producer, writer, or director and therefore had no role in its content. She was a twenty-one year old actress fulfilling her contractual obligations. Regarded as THE PREMIER SILENT FILM ACTRESS, Lillian's oeuvre encompasses roles that are anti-racist and pro-feminist including such classics as "Broken Blossoms" and "Way Down East," while Dorothy, who was one of the silent screen's most popular actresses and did not appear in The Birth of a Nation, had a significant part in the anti-Klan film, "The Cardinal." To remove these sisters' names from the theater would be a blow to artistic expression and would not further the cause of racial justice and women's contributions in film.To blacklist a performing artist simply for appearing in one film or play, as in the disrespectful phrase, "Ditch the Gish," is outrageous, narrow-minded and sexist. It is clearly an embarrassment to the establishment from which it came, and the decision-makers should be cognizant of that, as well as Lillian Gish's great legacy and trail-blazer as a successful woman in film who transitioned beautifully from the 'silents' to the 'talkies.' She was, and always will be, a fine example and credit to the film industry. Instead of renouncing the well-deserved honor bestowed on these two great actresses with the establishment of the Gish Film Theater in 1976 there should be a 're-awakening' celebration of the Gish sisters' achievements instead, which could be accompanied by lectures on these women by well-known film historians and the showing of such anti-racist and pro-feminist movie classics as "The Cardinal,""Broken Blossoms" and "Way Down East." This could have such a beneficial ripple affect on the entire campus, even beyond the Film, Drama, and Women Studies Departments, which it would directly benefit. Retaining the name of the Gish Theater would also increase Bowling Green University's respect and admiration as an institution, world-wide.I had the privilege of meeting Lillian Gish when I was a graduate student in painting at Bowling Green State University on October 14, 1979. It was her 80th birthday and she gave a warm, articulate lecture on "Way Down East" at the Gish Theater, a silent film in which she played the heroine. Afterwards I asked if I could take her picture for my sister, Jane Gaines, now a published film historian who teaches at Columbia University. She put her hand on my shoulder and said, "Let's have a picture taken of the two of us for your sister. I had a sister once, and I miss her very much!" These kind women's legacy in film needs to be REMEMBERED and HONORED at Bowling Green State University and in their state of Ohio and the rest of the world, NOT ERASED!

A key factor to business growth is making sales, which is why Clate and Scott say that small businesses must grow a culture of selling. That means you have to get over rejection and become a master closer—like Scott! The key is having a great product. If you do that, then selling really becomes serving, because you’ll know you’re selling something that will improve the quality of someone’s life. You don’t have to put on on your plaid used car salesman jacket, but you do have to get persuasive, so Clate and Scott give their recommendations for fostering that sales instinct. Mentioned in this episode: “The Master Closer” by Mike Kaplan Want to hire someone to sell for you instead? “We want skiers to literally help save the world,” said Porter Fox, editor at Powder Magazine. Climate change has already impacted the length and intensity of winters and reduced snowfall means many of the nation's ski centers will eventually be forced to close, especially those at lower temperatures. Jeremy Jones, professional snowboarder and founder of Protect Our Winters, reminisced about a spot he revisited in Chamonix: “I used to be able to snowboard here.” This two-panel conversation first explores the science and personal experiences behind shorter winters, then looks at how ski resort CEOs are dealing with the problem. “If you're going to allow carbon emissions to be free, in the end nobody's really going to do anything,” said Mike Kaplan, president and CEO of Aspen/Snowmass. With the popularity of winter sports, the ski industry may be able to help communicate the impacts of climate change. “This industry gets it,” Kaplan said.
